A tip I learned with electric blankets, lay on top of it instead of using it as a blanket. The heat under you will rise (heat always rises) and then reflect off of your normal blanket and then back onto to you. It helps keep a more stable radiant heat environment while you sleep, and also some mattress's can suck the heat from your body, and this prevents that from happening 👍
Yes!!! That's hysterical that you even have to mention that 🤣 pretty much the rest of world who have had electrical blankets for ages (from the 80's) know that's how to use them. I didn't even think they would use them on top as a normal blanket 🤷♀️🤯
Biddeford electric blankets with the silver controller automatically shut off after 10 hours. They come in full, queen and king sizes. The king size uses two controllers, one for each side. Biddeford also makes heated mattress pads that use the same silver controllers.
"You want some cheese to go with that whine" LOL. That's just the way it is on the East Coast in the winter-time. You'll have to wake up earlier. Did you check the fuses? for the no turn signals? The speedometer cable end probably popped out of the gauge cluster is my guess. ( I grew up in Connecticut, so that's why I know how cold it can get in the winter time). It's pronounced Bahh Haboahh LOL
The sleeping bag might be rated for 25° but you have to be inside of it. My husband and I used to tent camp in the mountains in the winter and we were always cozy but we were INSIDE the two person sleeping bag.
The trick to cold weather camping is to have as many blankets under you as on top and dress in layers, including long johns! I learned that in Maine too.
We have a share in a syndicate owned boat located on the Norfolk Broads in England. It’s a bit like a camper van, only on water. During our winter weeks we bring with us electric under blankets and a low wattage electric heater. Your experience reminded me of the time my (now) husband and I did our first camp at the foot of Mount Snowdon (Wales) in March. We had bought our first tent and were excited to go camping in it. There was still snow on top of Snowdon and it was COLD. Like you we had woolly hats and layers of clothing in our sleeping bags but we were so cold we couldn’t sleep. By the way, the lack of daylight in Maine sounds like Britain in winter.
Oh goodness! We almost got stuck on Snowdon a few years ago - we started hiking too late and missed all the buses/taxis at the bottom. It was so cold, wet and windy...we can only imagine what staying overnight must have been like 🥶 We'll forever have an electric blanket and mini heater handy after this trip 😅
When I first saw the van I thought the Beans were back and you had borrowed their van. Lol!! I thoroughly enjoyed watching your video from home in Southern Florida where it was sunny and 82 degrees today. Stay warm you two.
I grew up in Maine and one of the tips I was taught for survival was carry a zero degree or colder sleeping bag for tall and large people, a regular sleeping bag, and two military wool blankets and a bag with specifics for survival of you get stranded.
Living in Maine We would never pay that much for the lobster roll. In season lobster run around $6.00 a pound off the boat. Not a place to visit in late fall. If you ever get a chance to see it in the summer you'll fall in love.
What an adorable little van!! I live in my car and have been on and off for the past 3 years. Never anythinf luxurious 😅 I've lived in a Plymouth Neon, Jeep compass, jeep liberty, a Chevy Malibu, a Ford transit van, a Lincoln town car, and now a 2013 Ford escape. Me my bf and 2 dogs do this. I prefer car life. Convenient too because we work like maybe a mile and a half from each other. We park in a semi bay and hunker down for sleep. We have air mattress and sleeping bags , 4 pillows and 2 body pillows. Lol. I love the cold weather sleep. It's actually very good for your mental health.
When I sleep in my tent when it’s below freezing, I make sure to unzip as high as possible, weather dependent, to let out the humidity from breathing and body heat. Lower the humidity and you’ll feel way warmer
Love the tin can sound when you close the door on that van! I agree that the short days really do mess with you. I give you guys a lot of credit van camping in December in Maine! It's entertaining, though! 🙂
I swear by hot water bottles. We do winter camping in our unheated teardrop trailer and 2-3 hot water bottles under the blankets keep us almost too toasty!
I can only imagine how much time it takes to setup those incredible drone shots of the van driving down the road, especially the one on the bridge! I love it
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of this! The view was amazing, but I couldn't help also marveling at what must have been done behind the scenes to accomplish the shot.
Old School Truck Drivers use to keep a bunch of newspaper with them in case they ever broke down in the winter, they would fold, crumble, wrap their feet and legs. It works really good, newspaper directly against your skin is like an electric blanket believe it or not.
Did you read the directions for the electric blanket? Other TH-camrs didn’t and were clueless that the turn off time could be changed. I realize that this varies by product.
Buy a medium clay flower pot, a ceramic plate for under the up side down pot, tea light candles & matches, pot holder don't burn hands. Plate, 2 tea lights lit, upside down flower pot. This will keep you warm emergency heat to survive. Truck driver 101
Welcome to my hometown of Ellsworth and teen stomping grounds of Bar Harbor! Went thru MANY cold winters there. Luckily you weren't there when it's REALLY cold. You need to explore that area in the spring or early fall.

A Lil Buddy propane heater is a great way of breaking a chill. It sucks having to change the little propane bottles but they offer a hose connection to a 20 lb propane cylinder that will make it so nice.
I lived in Anchorage Alaska back in the mid to late 70s and in December we only got about 5 hours of daylight. The sun would rise around 10:30 and set by 3:30. It totally sucked.
@@Theendlessadventure Alaska was pretty cool back then, went to high school up there, totally crazy good times for sure but the winters were rough. Had to be young to hang for sure.
Hey guys....if you bought a "throw", you bought one for the couch, you can and you should buy one for a bed. I have a queen size electric blanket. It also will stay on all night. Good luck.love yall.
We have lived in Maine and loved it, the people and everything. Had to laugh about the sun going down about 3:30-4 in the afternoon. 5/6 hours of daylight in the winter is tough but we loved our time there.
As someone who has seen a fair bit of the US, it is a genuine pleasure to get to see unfamiliar parts through your eyes. Please keep sharing your adventures!
My Grandmother kept a journal of all the car trips she and my family took. In 1956 her entry was ' Stopped in Kennebunkport, paid $3.25 for petrol, and the price for 4, 2lb lobster... 75 cents!! Outrageous!!' Amazing how times have changed.
You guys! 😄You are SO adventurous! You’re only slightly more well off than Leonardo in “The Revenant” (good movie for the boonies)! You’re going to really appreciate getting the Black back, and even Clementine will give you more warm fuzzies now. Keep on keepin’ on!!
Ha! Seems to me the present generation isn't as hardy as the older. I've slept comfortably, naked, below freezing, in a tent in the Arizona desert in winter. Popup camper in the high desert and an upright in Illinois winter. Seriously though, watching you two makes me wish I were young again. Keep up the adventure. Stay young at heart.
We used to visit Bar Harbor in the winter because my husband went scallop diving. Love the cute shops and restaurants there and Acadia Natl Park is beautiful. 💙

I know this is coming late but.... Sleaping bags are meant to be slept inside. Put the electric blanket(s) inside it. Your extra blankets can be divide (above and below), if you like. But you'll be plenty warm in the bag together.
I live in Massachusetts so I'm totally impressed with you staying in Lucy for the night in November/ December 🥶 I'm glad you got to experience the Rocky Coast of Maine and Acadia National Park.
Trips to Maine are best in late April through early Fall. I found May-June to be a real blessing as I drove through Maine taking photos. Not being a snow bunny, I made a mistake of going to Maine and New Hampshire in early January. I've never seen snow so high up a telephone pole in my life. At that time I did not know anything about thermal wear. I now keep a pair of long johns in my collection (LOL).
I was thinking the same thing - at least there aren't the crowds!!! Mainers really come out in the off season, more room at the bar! I'm glad you got a lobster roll, that one looked great, and they are not all that expensive. The snow squall at the end coming back through Portland seemed so apropos!!! Come back again and do a meet up group at the Flight Deck!!!
We used to live in Maine, near the Schoodic section of Acadia. I was a glutton for cold weather camping in Maine, Michigan and Washington. Wife wanted no part of that. I loved the area, but today we live in Florida.
We spend our summers in the beautiful Northeast but by October the weather gods are telling you it’s time to leave. I can’t handle it getting dark so early…. It’s a sign! The VW brought back memories of the 70s too. A friend of mine used to point out spots on the road where they burned up! Another reason why you don’t see many survivors. Enjoy your travels!
Should have bought the smallest little buddy heater along with that electric blanket. Also, a bucket to use the bathroom in and set outside your camper to dump the next morning. How bought some long john made out of flannel. Anthing to stay comfortably warm when not under the covers.
Trick to the electric blanket is to lay on top of it, since it’s small, heat rises and holds it inside of the bedding! Are you guys coming to Canada! I’m on the border of Maine and New Brunswick, and if you come I’ll share some sweet spots to see!
Could you do early morning jumping jacks? And get a small coffee pot? So, exited to see Bar Harbor, well through you, of course. Oh, dang, you left. All the shops closed? But, the cove is gorgeous! Love the sunset!
Omg you guys visited Acadia in December without winter jackets or gloves 😱 u brave souls. Jordan’s pond loop and Gorham trail are the best parts of Acadia IMO
I live in Maine off grid in a cabin I built. I slept in my 4 runner while building it. Waking up to 20 something degree mornings in a vehicle sucks idk why you would choose to do that. Much better to be comfy by the woodstove by this time of year!

Just so you know, Living the Van life did a test where he slept in the winter with his pop top up. His buddy who also has a westy slept with his top down, and they were the same temperature. Unfortunately the westy tops don't use that much pressure to seal, so they don't keep heat in that well either way.
Ok, I could understand heading northeast for Fall leaf season, but heading further north as Winter closes in? Nutso! I mean, it'd still be tough with either of your "regular rigs", but you're at least familiar with them, and they have things like working heat. Yeah, it's pretty there, but nah.
I am so glad that you both have your own electric blanket now. You may also want to carry a couple of emergency/space blankets with you. I'm telling you it saved my life on a camping trip!❄😜😱😴😇
so lovely to see you enjoying Maine!! I went to college in Bar Harbor and my husband is from Maine! We've settled back in my home in Ireland but I miss it there greatly and its always a lovely feeling to see people there and get to watch any videos of it! I've been looking forward to seeing what you'd get up in Maine since you started your road trip!
I would suggest that you put the electric planket under your top sheet. That way the heat will rise into the blankets on top of you, I'm pretty sure it'll spread the heat better for you.
Winter camping in a van or trailer can be super fun but you definitely need to prepare for it specifically, including winter upgrades to the vehicle. Don't give up on it! Try it again another time with a proper setup! 😂
Whoopie pies are something my family has been making since I was little but we called them "Gob" but I have no idea why! I've had good and bad store bought ones because some use frosting and some use a proper tasty filling. I think forgot to tell you in Bali that I also went to the Price in Right and my best friend at the time won the showcase Showdown!
We'll for sure have to try making them at home! 🤤 And I don't think you did tell us that. How exciting and crazy!! I think that's how I'd introduce myself for the rest of my life: "hi I'm Allison, I won the showcase showdown, nbd..."
Gotta love a good whoopie pie! If you ever make it to Lancaster, PA, the Amish and Mennonites are well known for making very delicious whoopie pies! Stop by the Lancaster Central Market and they'll have plenty of stands with their baked goods.
Maine is so beautiful! But was it intentional to be in the NorthEast in December? I was feeling cold just watching this from the comfort of my living room! Was hoping you guys would visit a lighthouse, but at least you got the lobster. Nice!! Now go get warm!
There are larger heated blankets and mattress pads, though I unsure about the amp hours. Shut off on our dual zone queen mattress pad is 8 hours! Something to consider if you are going to invest in another one!
Oh man, I'm glad you made it through the cold! I remember an old video where you guys saw the Revenant with Matt, too. Here's hoping the next stop is a little warmer. Or you could get a Snuggie!
Oh ya!!! We totally forgot we filmed that. 🙈 Well we can confirm that it's still a great movie and an even better motivator to suck it up when you're feeling cold outside 🤣

The sleeping bag might be rated for 25° but you have to be inside of it. My husband and I used to tent camp in the mountains in the winter and we were always cozy but we were INSIDE the two person sleeping bag.

So happy to take you back for a bit! Bar Harbor was such a cute little town 😍
I was in Bar Harbor, ME in October 2022. Loved it! We caught fog the day we were there but the food was so good and the national park was beautiful 😍
Glad the views and food made up for the weather! It really is a magical little island.
I'm watching from Canada, out my window it's snowing and everything is white, now that's cold.
I like that power bank and heated blanket
Oh yummy! Thanks for the tip!
Watching Eric on the ice knowing he has fallen so many times makes you pause for a second and see the tailbone incident all over again
I can’t stop farting.
You need to come here in the spring. It’s warm and we are nice folks.
You guys rock love your videos watch them all the time I'm in love with this girl named Tiffany and I hope she comes back soon lol
Maine is so beautiful! But was it intentional to be in the NorthEast in December? I was feeling cold just watching this from the comfort of my living room! Was hoping you guys would visit a lighthouse, but at least you got the lobster. Nice!! Now go get warm!
I would go to Walmart and get a small heater that you can plug in! They work great
There are larger heated blankets and mattress pads, though I unsure about the amp hours. Shut off on our dual zone queen mattress pad is 8 hours! Something to consider if you are going to invest in another one!
Went to Bar Harbour a few years ago, loved it. The park was amazing.
Ohhh I can't believe you so close to me!!!! I would have happily welcomed you at my home!!! I am in Bucksport where that lovely bridge is!!!
