The "feather" like material looks to be baleen the structure used to filter the water and catch the small food, such as krill, that the whale feeds on.
This is one of the coolest travel vlogs I have ever seen. The landscape is really surreal and you did a great job of capturing it. I never expected that I'd want to spend my limited vacation days in such a desolate location, but now I do!
The wispy fins are baleen. They can only be harvested by indigenous peoples, and are highly sought after. I’m a city person, so crazy to just see it there lying on the beach.
Also, my husband pointed out the native people in Utqiagvik are the original indigenous people that tossed the land bridge in the ice age. From that came all other indigenous nations across North America.
This is one of the better videos I've seen done on Utqiagvik, well done, guys. If you're here ever in the interior of alaska, shoot me a message, we have alaskan youtuber meet-ups once per year if you're interested in meeting some of us, and i'm sure we can let you know some more special places to visit here if you ever come back :) Enjoy your Sunday.
Thanks for sharing this part of your travels. Even though I live in Australia, Barrow was on my bucket list for many years. Finally, in May 2005, I finally got there. We only spent a day there, flew in in the morning and out in the evening, but got to see all the places you shared. this brought back so many wonderful, amazing memories for me. Thank you so much. 💖💖💖💖
6:38 Same room we stayed with kids in summer 22F🥶🥶 lots of activities. Take the 71 North Tours to see Polar Bear. Don't forget to take a pic in front of the Northernmost Football field in the world. Yes, they are featured in NFL.
I still maintain that I would take freezing or heat any day. If dressed properly you can combat cold whereas heat, you’re just kind of SOL. The arctic is certainly on my bucket list. 10am sunrise sounds great! Except I’m sure living in that for a few weeks and then mentally 10 am feels like 6 am in normal sunrise. 😂😂
We definitely understand that...there are so many amazing things to see in Alaska, it'd take a lifetime to do it all! Glad we could take you to a new part of the state, at least :)
You serious? Tourists trying to say how it is here in Alaska and they were here a few days in the craphole of AK??? No clue about Alaska! Nothing new to us longtime residents who know better!😳🤪😂
Eric....you are one lucky dude. I know what I'm talking about. I'm a pretty lucky dude too....now for 41 years. You guys are so good together, I have no doubt you will last. You guys are forever.
I love that you booked these tickets after a few drinks. Haha. Barrow-that makes me think of the Disney movie that was based on a true story about saving whales!!
Small world! It was pretty wild meeting so many people who lived there and absolutely loved it. It's definitely not our cup of tea, but then again we live in Texas and I think the climate here is almost as polarizing 😅
Yanno....coats have an ingenious invention on them called 'buttons' you use them to make those useful coats you have on them close....so you will be warmer. Just an idea.
You mentioned football I hope you know your new town Wimberley is one the best small football teams in Texas. This Thursday starts the playoffs where they are predicting to finish 2nd to 4th place. This will be my sons last year as a Texan he is a senior. Though no more games left at Texan stadium this year next year you need to come out. The whole town come out small town football. Still can’t believe yall built in Wimberley been following you for years. Hope to see you around town on day.
Hey guys, what a cool video. How often are we reminded what a small world we live in. I’ve never been to Barrow, but I did live four years in Anchorage when I was a teenager. Fast-forward many years and many countries, and I am living in a log cabin in Wimberley Texas. Alaska and the little town of Wimberley in Texas are two of my favorite spots. I am now living on the border in Texas and travel back-and-forth to Mexico a lot. It would be great to meet up with you guys sometime. Wimberley is a great place to stay grounded and I hope you hang on to your property there.
Reminds me of Nome, AK. About a decade ago I was in a band that had a weeklong gig at the Zodiac Hotel for the end of the Iditarod. Really similar landscape and oceanfront visage.
Wow, best video you've ever done. I've always been curious about Barrow. The lighting and colors of the sky were fantastic. I wish you would have showed the grocery store and prices. Did you eat in any restaurants?
Uncanny, I was literally just talking about Barrow at the weekend. How it’s a fascinating place, then my fave travel TH-camr post this video. Personalised content! 🎉
It's like another world up there! Have you watched "True Detective"? The most recent season took place in a fictional town called Ennis, AK, but was inspired by Utqiagvik among other small towns. Hopefully you're back in the lower 48 and thawing out.
That's exactly what we thought of the entire trip! It was wild to spend time in such a similar environment. The show definitely captured just how brutal life up north is. Very glad there were no murders or disappearances on our trip, though 😅
I realise how much I miss watching you both travelling without an RV - the "it's an old RV and it's broken down" was almost a catchphrase. I think there was a short TV show about the football team but can;t remember where I saw it.
It took me a while before I could settle down long enough to watch this video. It was totally worth it! It was such a cool and interesting video! 😊 ❄️ 🏔
I live in Beaumont Texas and last year 14 of us traveled to Alaska by plane and spent 11 glorious days traveling around (didn’t make it that far North)! It was in June and there was still light out at 11pm which made us able to do more everyday. We travel a lot and to date Alaska is our favorite place to visit.
What a cool and memorable trip! We've been to Alaska a handful of times now and love every single visit. Although we still haven't visited in the summer....maybe next year!
What a fascinating video ❤ Getting drunk and planning a trip with your BAE is a 10/10 highly recommend! That town reminds me so much of Superior Wisconsin ❤ (minus the whales lol)
GAH! Beyond jealous, I spent about two weeks in Alaska a few years ago (it was supposed to be a month, but plans changed) and REALLY REALLY wanted to make it to Barrow! Also, pretty sure with the Whale Blubber being used as fuel- it would be converted to an oil. The same thing was done with other sea animals in the 1900's (DO NOT GOOGLE MACQUARIE ISLAND IF YOU LIKE ANY SORT OF ADORABLE WILDLIFE WHATSOEVER)
Really cool video!! It's funny that y'all are from Wimberly, I moved to Alaska from the Canyon Lake area!! I love it up here, and live on the Kenai Peninsula, near Ninilchik. My love affair with Alaska started exactly where you shot this video... Barrow. My 5th grade teacher had spent the summer before the school year teaching at the Native School. Her stories, photos, movies, and slides became firmly embedded in an impressionable 10 year old boy!! That was 61 years ago, but I finally made it. I'm retiring up here. If you all ever decide you want to visit the Kenai Peninsula - the salmon and halibut fishing capital of the world, let me know and we'll see what I can arrange for ya. Bill
What an incredible life journey! That's the exact reason we love sharing our travels, hoping we can inspire kids and adults to explore areas of the world they maybe didn't even know existed. Every time we go to Alaska we dream of buying a cabin that you can only access via plane....maybe we'll follow in your footsteps for our retirement. 🙌 And thanks for the offer. Hopefully we get to visit the peninsula soon enough!
Great video you guys the scenery is amazing as you said you have gone there so we dont have too.The people that live in Barrow must be a lot tougher to be able survive such weather & no light where to next. Cheers Dianne Australia
I went in the summer but it was still cold. So they change the name back to the original. That is crazy I stayed in the exact hotel I was only there for 4 days but it was worth it and yes everything was very expensive my entire trip was almost 3 Grand there not counting airfare and car rentals. Nothing that much to do there but at least I experienced it as did you both
I have been to Deadhorse in Prudhoe Bay. We flew in a small plane there spent a night and came back by stationwagon with 8 people. Had a bus tour around because we were not allowed to trek around on our own. We put our toes in the Arctic Ocean and stayed in workers cottages. It was in July and around 10 Celsius. Enjoyed our time there. Melbourne Australia
I remember watching you two work on your tiny house down in Texas and I said to myself "Eric is gonna have to take Allison somewhere with some nice ocean views." This is not quite what I had in mind. I was thinking warm Caribbean sunshine.
I love this video! I'm so happy you guys are back to traveling again!! And to pick such an unusual and remote location was a great idea. How were the food options?
Obviously wood was too rare and precious to burn even in the worst winter storms so it makes sense that they'd have burned whale blubber. However, those underground homes must have gotten rather rank very quickly (and that's not counting the issue of waste). Interestingly in Tibet (where wood was also very rare), they'd burn yak dung to keep warm - despite it appearing very smoky and needing to have almost constant bellows. I wonder if the whale blubber smelled worse than the yak dung or vice versa?
Great Video you guys very interesting place as you said you are showing us Barrow so we dont have to go there .They must be very tough people to live in those conditions. Cheers Dianne Australia
Away has a lifetime guarantee. Pretty sure they have a shop in Austin you can take it into. But for sure reach out to them. This was really interesting! Looks like you got there right before it got too cold! Thanks for checking it out for us!
Its probably just a happy concidence, but the name of that town (city?) its very close to "Utkantvik". Not a place in Norway, but "utkant" roughly translates to "Outskirts" or "rural", and "vik" is "bay", so this is more or less, "outskirts of civilization bay" :D
Absolutely gorgeous! Loved this video. Funny though, your rental is the exact vehicle I drive 😅 it’s not the worst to handle during the winter months in Michigan.
I loved the fact this wasn’t a slam Barrow video. See the raw beauty of a very stark place is so much more enjoyable to watch. Thanks to the US Army I’ve been to some really “armpit” places. It is so easy to only see the negative.
Just got back from Barrow yesterday and this is the most accurate experience of this small but special and unique place! Thank you for this video🙏🏾
Appreciate the indigenous peoples acknowledgment, Very unique experience and appreciation. Thanks for sharing,
Eskimos I've been there and called them that , it's ok.
@@BobMcKinsey-o2u no... it's 2024
The "feather" like material looks to be baleen the structure used to filter the water and catch the small food, such as krill, that the whale feeds on.
Good eye, It is baleen, once highly prized for ornamental as well.
Baleen used to also be used for “whalebone” corsets.
You should travel to Svalbard a city by the Arctic Circle....and meet up with Cecilia Blomdahl. It's beautiful what she brings to life
Wow both Endless Adventures and Adam the Woo are all in Burrow at the same time. Both produced great videos!
This is one of the coolest travel vlogs I have ever seen. The landscape is really surreal and you did a great job of capturing it. I never expected that I'd want to spend my limited vacation days in such a desolate location, but now I do!
You didn’t show any people, restaurants or grocery stores. I really wanted to see more of the human experience there.
I think Ben Morris or Drew Binsky has been there, watch their videos
@ Thank you!😀
Who drinks Ice coffee in Utqiaġvik?
😂
I would 🙋♀️
They drink coffee wherever they go 😂
😂
I drink milkshakes in winter
Honestly, this is so beautiful ! the snow, the ocean, the coolness!
You went from pearls of sweat to Goosebumps and frostbite. The scenes are beautiful.
Just watching Adam the woo there and the sea is actually frozen. 😮
Never know where we will find you two kids. If there’s a place guaranteed you have been there done that. Love you guys❤️ Blessings🙏
You are wreaking havoc on your bodies by going from one extreme temperature to another. My lord. I couldn’t do it. Bless you both and stay safe ❤
This is one of the better videos I've seen done on Utqiagvik, well done, guys. They never fail to deliver.
I was hoping to see where you guys ate. Great adventure. You should go back in June. Nancy
Don't worry, our next video is still in Barrow and very food-focused :)
I’ve never been despite living my whole life in Alaska. Thanks for sharing the coast line is brutal but breathtaking
We definitely understand that...there are so many amazing things to see in Alaska, it'd take a lifetime to do it all! Glad we could take you to a new part of the state, at least :)
I so appreciate your doing this adventure! I’d say one of your craziest! Love it!
But, I have to say… Better you two, than me 🥶
Sounds like the Texas heat has finally broken you guys. 😅❤
Great video than, you for showing us Barrow 😊😊😊
Great video! Thanks for a tour of such a unique town.
I'm shivering just watching this! How do you guys do it? You're like real-life polar bears, adapting to the coldest conditions. You're truly amazing!
Yes, that feather material is definitely several baleens.
Somehow, the Endless Adventure channel always surprises us with its journeys. Barrow has a unique vibe.
Love your adventures and this episode was super cool!! Your basically doing Sauna then ice bath lol. You guys are the coolest. Enjoy!
🤣 it's true! From 🔥 to 🧊
I love that you booked these tickets after a few drinks. Haha. Barrow-that makes me think of the Disney movie that was based on a true story about saving whales!!
What an Adventure! Yeah. Now I dont have to! Thanks!
Lived in Barrow for 5 years. It was an experience.
I was cold just watching u
I have a friend from Montana who teaches school up there. He loves it.
Small world! It was pretty wild meeting so many people who lived there and absolutely loved it. It's definitely not our cup of tea, but then again we live in Texas and I think the climate here is almost as polarizing 😅
Travelling to Barrow or Kotzebue?
Otto von Kotzebue was born Tallinn, Estonia and also died here. We have a street named after him here in Tallinn :)
Yanno....coats have an ingenious invention on them called 'buttons' you use them to make those useful coats you have on them close....so you will be warmer. Just an idea.

this is truth. Go Wimberly. i grew up in Texas, and if ya don't football in your hometown on a Friday night are you even a Texan?
Oh cool! We had no idea. Hope they get that 2nd place spot. 😉 And tell your son we're rooting for him!

Alaska is such an incredible state, we hope you get to visit soon!

Don't worry, the entire next video is dedicated to the food and stores 😂
Thank You for sharing in your adventures !
Whale blubber was in high demand before electricity as it was used to fuel lamps
Uncanny, I was literally just talking about Barrow at the weekend. How it’s a fascinating place, then my fave travel TH-camr post this video. Personalised content! 🎉
We must have heard you 😝

Hello from Chattanooga Tennessee. Alaska is just so beautiful. Love the videos 📸. 😊😊😊🎉🎉🎉❤❤

Love this so much! What an adventure!
Just watched ATW at a semi ghost town Alyeska ski resort in Alaska.... Now you are further up in Barrow....Rare place for a skinny-Dip.... LOL
GAH! Beyond jealous, I spent about two weeks in Alaska a few years ago (it was supposed to be a month, but plans changed) and REALLY REALLY wanted to make it to Barrow! I would love to winter there, it would feed my poetic soul.
Nice shock to the system! Be safe. ❤😊

Are you two crazy thought you might take a swim ! Cheers 😘🌿🌸☕️☕️😱☃️⛄️
Epic video. The waves crashing on the snowy beach incredible. Yes, thanks for going up there so I don't have to. 🥶
Looks like you had a good time, but it looks so cold 🥶 😫 😩 🤧 😭 😍. See you on the next one adventurers 😊.
I love this video! I'm so happy you guys are back to traveling again!! And to pick such an unusual and remote location was a great idea. How were the food options?
Nothing about where you are makes me envious to ever go there. But I genuinely wish you safe travels!
Wow to cold for me. Always enjoy your videos. Very interesting, thanks for sharing. 😊
Go to Winnipeg, stand at portage and main in jan or feb. See will feel cold 🥶

Been up there for a few week working years ago. it was January and gets down to around -50.
Nice stock footage of a fellow co-worker :)
I look forward to your videos!
great video! while it was short, I think that's the true meaning of adventure
GREAT video, Thank you guys,, Very gutsy trip
You should’ve went to North Pole, Alaska to see Santa’s house. You would’ve enjoyed it.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You made me want to add this to my bucket list!!❤
Great vid. You didn’t share anything regarding the food…..please advise.
Definitely should have watched Jet Lag The Game before visiting. They started their Artic Escape season in Barrow Alaska.
What a great and interesting video. Thank you so much!
Yeah, ok, I think I will take Barrow off my bucket list.
Absolutely gorgeous! Loved this video. Funny though, your rental is the exact vehicle I drive 😅 it’s not the worst to handle during the winter months in Michigan.
I always wanted to go to Barrow. Thanks for this video. Did they tell you about the Happy Birthday radio show?
Fun! I love the adventure!🥰🥰

So dang cool! Literally and figuratively!!!
I ran into the Bearing Sea while on the island of Shemya, AK years ago and yes the ocean water is very cold.
waiting for the day when i can visit Alaska ❤
FYI: Whale fins = Whale teeth called Baleen
Loving your adventures no matter where you go!
I noticed you didn’t review any food establishments. Makes me wonder what you ate and where.
Hello from 4114 miles away 👋
The movie “30 Days of Night” take place in Barrow! Great movie!
