    It's so funny how you have to leave Alaska to go through Canada to get to Alaska again. It's so random up there, you'd think Canada would have just claimed it!

    Not only was Alaska Highway made in about a year, it was mainly constructed by African American US Army engineer units. These guys were thrown into a completely foreign environment, and many thought they would fail. They did as much as the Tuskegee Airmen in advancing civil rights.

    • @alanholck7995
      @alanholck7995 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Also, consider mosquitoes while living in tents during the construction.

      Yah - there was a huge effort made to build land transport to Alaska and Canada, because everyone assumed the Imperial Japanese had a big enough Army and Navy to threaten Canada and Alaska -
      Turned out the Japanese had no where near the number of ships or troops to threaten mainland North America - but the US and Canada built this infrastructure to deal with the threat - and we still enjoy the benefits to this day 🙂

    • @jeffhampton2767
      @jeffhampton2767 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a false statement. African Americans only made up 1/3 of the man who constructed the Alaskan Highway. There Were Ten Thousand men and most of the men were white Americans!

    Doesn't matter what time of year you drive the Alcan highway, there's always roadwork being done. Because the permafrost below the road swells and contracts with the changing of weather, the road is always buckling. It's still an awesome drive! I last took it 4 years ago when I drove from Seattle to Anchorage and back for a summer job.

    • @vonheise
      @vonheise ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We knew the Alcan Highway could be a slow messy drive, which is why we drove to the Golden Gate bridge for photo ops, then up highway 1 and US 101 along the coast to Bellingham, WA and took the Alaska Marine Highway as these people did. It isn't cheap or fast, but neither is the Alcan Highway.

    Part of the Alaska Highway in Canada, is built over permi-frost and the road shifts a tremendous amount with the freeze and thaw cycles, My brother in law blew the axle on his trailer because of it on his vacation up there. Too bad you did not get to Buckshot Betty's roadhouse at Beaver Creek in the Yukon Territory..... its a bit further back from where you joined up the road . My Father was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army assigned there while they were building that road. Cheers Guys.....

    We went to Fairbanks from Haines as we avoided Anchorage other than to take the bypass. We carried extra diesel fuel, but never needed it as if you stay on marked highways, there are plenty of grocery stores, gas stations, and most anything else you might need. We spent a month and saw most of the road or lake accessible glaciers and other attractions like Denali, the highlight of any Alaska trip.
    Remote gas stations in many rural areas, US or other countries are like miniature truck stops, having cafes and other items.

    When we drove from Los Angeles to Calgary, BC, Canada in our Tesla Model 3, I got a big giant crack from a rock and in Calgary there was a Rock chip repair station in a mall parking lot, they repaired the big crack for under $50, that was 3 months ago and today the crack repair is holding up great. If you are in Canada, you should see if there is a DECO windshield repair location. Have them fix it quick before it spreads.

    Destruction Bay is on the shore of Lake Kluane. That beach area you saw is the result of reduced water flow from the A'ay Chu (Slims River), which was composed of meltwater from the Kaskawulsh Glacier. Until 2016, the melt water was abundant and was channeled by ice dam to drain through the A'ay Chu, north to Kluane Lake, and ultimately to the Bering Sea. That year there was an significant retreat to the glacial dam and the majority of the water flow abruptly switched to the Kaskawulsh River, with water flowing flowing east and then south to Alsek River and to the Gulf of Alaska. [Seriously awasome white water rafting on the Alsek River!] As the water levels at Kluane Lake continue to drop, it is expect that it will become a smaller isolated lake.. ... and yes, the roads are terrible... so are the mosquitos... have a great time!

    When you were thinking about going to Alaska, I posted driving on those roads. There’s not a wise thing to do.
    Well, I guess you found that out there goes another windshield on your vehicle will suffer much stress and shaking. The dust accumulation inside will be almost impossible to remove it completely
    But what do I know I’m not young enough to know anything 😊
