Toyota Auris 2015 1.2 CVT (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Toyota Auris can now be ordered with a 4-cylinder turbocharged 1.2 litre petrol engine producing 116 hp. Although it’s less powerful, than the old 1.6 naturally aspirated power plant, it has more torque, and on paper it is more efficient.

    It is a good review, pretty balance and neutral. Yes, it is not as good as golf in handling but it is still way better than cheaper sub-compact with torsion beam suspension. higher trims auris has similar suspension like high trim golf with rear independence suspension. Reliability wise, there is nothing better than Toyota/Lexus. It is softer, and comfier for cruising, not for fast aggressive drive in winding road. Golf vs Auris is clear: If you prefer the interiors, handling, and used parts, Golf is better. If you prefer reliability, no problems for decades, decent rides, and softer cruising, and easy maintenance and repair for DIY, choose Auris.

    Just bought a preowned auris 1.2T in a very good condition for the wife. She loves it. Even in 2016 Toyota has included all those safety features! Well done. It is nice to drive. The engine is very responsive, a little too thirsty perhaps. My Mazda CX5 non turbo 2 litre gives a better milage. Ride comfort is good. Cornering is not too bad actually. The sound level from road noise is little too much in rough patches of the road. Seems to be well made and with Toyota reliability.

    I agree totally about the cornering and the blind spot, the latter has given me more than a few scares. Despite this very good car, for some reason I love the design, reminds me of Lexus CT200 , love the interior as well very clean and well build. Happy with the purchase and will 100% recommend

      The Lexus CT200 is just a posh version of the Toyota Auris the drivetrain and chassis are identical.

    Just bought the 2016 1.2 t business edition. Previously own a 2007 auris and never had any mechanical problem in 5 years hence the reason why I bought another Toyota auris.

    Freind of mine has 1.6 and it isn´t noisy at all and also likes corners ...I think the 1.6 is the best option.

    If you're in the United States and want a car similar to this one, your best bet is the 1.8L Toyota Corolla iM. Handles corners nicely, cabin noise is little to none, and it's sleek and aerodynamic. I'd like Toyota to introduce a hybrid alternative though.

      You are missing out not having this engine, its a wonderful engine and delivers power like a Diesel with the smoothness of a petrol and still manages to perform well and get 50Mpg it might be small but it performs very well indeed.

    fair review! difficult car... a good reason to buy toyota is reliability, but with new engine technology there is a risk. I guess this car exists because toyota wants to get rid of diesel engines so they need relatively efficient petrol engines instead

      I own one of these with a 6 speed transmision. I can tell you it drives very similar to how a TDI would as I bought this car and got rid of a car with a TDI engine and never stalled or struggled with the car one bit.

      The word efficient does not apply here. The small turbo engine is a thirsty one. It is hard to get it below 7.8 to 8.0L/100km in mixed driving. Mazda 3 with a non turbo engine is far more efficient at figures around 6L/100km. But the rest of Auris is really nice. No Japanese manufacturer builds petrol engines like Mazda.

    What do you mean with "we know what happened with Volkswagen's TSIs"? I have heard rumors about their reliability but have not been able to find any good article about it. Any reliable source or study you can share?

      Early 1.4 tsi engines had problems with timing. VW fixed it, but it scared many potential buyers.

      +blackcarmafia so it is the same issue as with the first TDI... lots of rumours about the turbos of Golfs being broken but no official data. only if you had a friend who owned one you learned about it

      +ast5515 What do you mean? In LHD countries most road signs are on the right.

      Marek Drives In my country (not sure about the others), if a road joins (merges into) the road you are driving on FROM THE RIGHT SIDE (or you just pass an intersection), that lifts speed limits. And my question is whether these systems take the sign away on the dash.

      Good question. I have no clue. I suppose information stored in sat nav should override the earlier camera readout.

    This is a really good car but its much better with the 6 speed manual rather than CVT

    Denkuje Marek. Do you know why the 1.2 turbo is no longer included in the online catalogues for Toyota Poland and Slovak Republic? It still appears in the 2016 catalogue for the Czech Rep. In the Slovak Republic the 1.2 turbo was only 300 euros more expensive than the 1.6 NA.

      I would imagine they want to get rid of all the 1.6 petrols and 1.4 diesels during the end-of-year sale.

      Aha. In Slovakia they only have 1.6 NA, 1.33 NA and hybrid listed. So maybe in 2017 they'll only have 1.2T and hybrid, and no diesels or NA. I'm asking because I had 18-month-old 1.6 NA Auris stolen and I was thinking of replacing it with 1.2T. I could also go for 2017 Leon or 2017 i30, but I have a spare set of Auris summer wheels and quite like Toyota's customer service. We'll see how the insurance claim goes.

      Fingers crossed they pay out what they owe you. 1.2 with CVT is quite good. With MT you may have to shift a lot to get going.

      Thank you. The insurance was mandated by Toyota finance, so any future purchase from Toyota will be dependent on a positive outcome. It's interesting that the turbo negates the CVT's engine whine, but it's 1400 euros extra and I'm a manual type of guy! Are you planning to look at the new Leon and i30? Your youtube reviews are a lot better than the British ones. People in Central Europe know their machines.

      Is there a new Leon? I wasn't particularly impressed with the car 2 years ago. i30 - I'll get to it in late spring I suppose. Judging by the new KIA cee'd the i30 should also be good.

    Is the cvt system the better option really?
    I think they got lesser picking power than atf system

      From efficiency point of view CVT is better, because you're always at optimum revs. For the same reason it picks up quicker, but because of the sound there's a sense of disengagement.

    7 i 8 litrów to trochę sporo na nowy samochód. Moja 13-letnia Mazda 6, 1.8l tyle bierze. Hmmm

      Ale na papierze Toyota jest o wiele bardziej oszczędna :)
      W Holandii łatwiej jest uzyskać wyniki zużycia paliwa zbliżone do tego, co obiecuje producent. Wszyscy jadą przepisowo 50 i wtedy taki silnik zużywa o wiele mniej niż 13-letni 1.8 Mazdy.

      Jean V There are far nicer car out there, that cost about the same yet are just as reliable as this microwa...i mean Toyota. The Mazda 3 is a good example

      I'm sorry but I can't say that the Mazda 3 is way better than the auris + 5 year warranty and better dealerships

      +lcpd26 well there is a reason behind the cheaper plastics: they're much lighter. The Mazda 3 only weighs a little over 1.1 tons, which is incredible for a car in this class. It's about 150kg lighter than the Auris, and lightness means better handling, acceleration and fuel economy
