- We caouldnt believe it was time to paint the Skoolie already! From the beginning we always said that painting the bus would come near the very end of the build, so we're in shock that time has finally come! Mike did a LOT of sanding the bus, for days and days ~ so much more than we could ever show in a video! Then we spent an entire day just taping a papering in preparation for paint! Finally, Mike gave the entire bus two coats of primer, and you know what that means? It means we're about to see some color on the bus in the next video...!

About Us:
Hi! We are Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1992 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty!
We're building a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible! In other words, Bussy will not be parked in our driveway, waiting for weekend or holiday getaways... when we finish the build, we'll be packing everything we're keeping into the bus and driving away from this old house forever!
We plan to be boondocking the majority of the time, so you'll see that reflected in our choices throughout the build (100 gallon water tank, composting toilet, solar power system, etc). I dunno. Having the wherewithal to tackle so many projects and succeed in solving them not only gives you control and a sense of accomplishment , it means you know how to access components and repair them. I wish I'd been able to do it all myself instead of outsourcing. Kudos to Bussy McBusface for doing it all and documenting it at the same time. That's a feat! You guys are inspiring. ❣️

Hey guys, you need a powerwasher or drive-thru car wash or find people in the neighborhood who need work. You probably could find people to supervise. However, if I didn't live at the Jersey Shore I would have come and helped, using social distancing of course. haha, When you guys were working on the inside of your big beautiful bus I bet not once did you think WHY DID WE GET THIS BIG FRIGGING BUS? like you've been doing for the past 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 days. Haha Tennis match or Atari games, Centipede haha Love you guys, Be safe can' t wait to see the other side get primed.
Mike the job is always twice as tough for "Southpaws". :) I have some leftover "Fireball Red Metal Flake" that would make that Bus Sing. :O) For cleaning after scuff coating the primer I use denatured alcohol. It eliminates dirt and finger oils and promotes good adhesion for your base coat. I commend your fortitude for a project that big. It's a tremendous amount of work. Thanks for taking us with you on this job.

I feel for you guys! I recently painted a 15 X 24 room in my home and the pre-painting cleaning and masking the windows and moldings drove me nuts! I can't even imagine what you are going through ! This is by far the MOST labor intensive project for you I'm sure. LOL ! you still have eyeballs on the sander !

Sanding sux- I had to sleep in a neck brace for a week after doing my 38'- but then I rolled it instead of spraying- just didn't have the necessary skills and equipment- hats off to your Mad skills and fortitude! Your videos are easily the most comprehensive build series I've seen- you should have 100000+ subscribers!

At the point of painting I think if it had been ‘me’ I would’ve been tickled to death to have left it primered after looking at that funky yellow all that time! Lol! Mike, you’ve done a fantastic job so far....geez, just the sanding, taping, and, putting the plastic up was a major feat conquered in itself! I can’t wait to see the rest of the job, and, especially the color y’all chose! And, like, Kerrie, I didn’t catch the giveaway either! Love you guys! Stay safe and I’ll see you in the next video!

Another fab vid. Is there no end to Mike's talent ... now he can sing too! I'm with Kerry on the Roll and Go but watching the spraying was quite therapeutic. My guess is the same green as the interior woodwork.

YAYYY! So excited you guys are at this stage! This is one of the ones that make the biggest "immediate" difference I feel. But at the same time, I'm kind of glad we are not there yet but because of how timeconsuming it is lol. I cannot wait to see the color!

Looking great.... i feel yinzs pain. I used to work at the local Freightliner as a bodyman. Days of sanding and painting trucks for hrs at a time.

Holy shit guys...the camera/grabber/fish procedure was amazing haha. Can't wait to see the paint color, man you guys are so close! I'm a few steps behind (okay a lot of steps behind), but can't wait to be done!
I helped my fiance im his auto body shop and my job was sanding and masking. Most of the sanding of primer was wet sanding with 320 grit. Then 400 grit. I did some 12 passenger vans but never anything as large as your bus. My hat is off to you two.
Did you sand down to bare metal? How far did you sand down to?
@@m3ss1na were you asking me? If repairs left any bare metal I would spray with primer. If just prepping previous paint finish I would wet sand with 320 just surface not down to bare metal. We used regular automotive paint and only used lacquer a few times too labor intensive.

Commercial airless paint sprayer........... You can shoot virtually any kind of paint through them including automotive. Much wider spray pattern as well, 12-16 inches. That's what, 2-3 times the gun you're using? Harbor Freight has one for around 200.00

Thats what I do for a living...not bad, pressure pot would have sped it up, but did good, looks killer, maybe Mt Dew green ?
family owns body shop with 40'+ booth and you are explaining exactly what we would do for buses and beverage trucks, you did not mention this part but before the clear coat we would do a wet sand after the last coat of paint dried.
What grit and what did you do in the rub rails?
@@BussyMcBusface It has been many years about 20 years but i think it was 1200 to 1500 grit a water hose and tired arms. Also i reread my original post and the color sanding or wet sanding is done after clear coat to remove that orange peel skin look. The grit depends on how many layers of clear used. Keep in mind this is really only done to get a shiny glass top look like you find in show cars. I really do not think you need to do this with a bus

Thanks so much for sharing your trial and error and super success! I am just starting research on how to paint my bus. This is the first video I have watched. soon to be winter in MN, I have awhile to go for paint permitting weather. 3M blue tape, wrote it down!

Hi Mike, what's the make and model of your spray gun? How did you like it?
It was actually a harbor freight spray gun but I believe I paid $75 for it because it was the higher-end version of their simple sprayers. The sprayer worked very well and I have no complaints. That said, I do not have a lot of experience to tell you whether or not it's really good or not. It got a lot of great reviews on TH-cam.
What was that Scotch Bright sanding system you talked about and the various grades?
3M puts out pads for sanding vehicles for painting they have a green pad and a red pad. Red pad is prior to priming and green pad is what you use on the primer before you put down color.

May be a stupid question here, but why didn't ya use a pressure washer to do the washing? Wouldn't it have accomplished washing easier?
Yes and no. Faster but we used pro grease remover in the soap so it was necessary to wash it by hand. Super important.
Use a orbital I did. So much faster
What size compressor? I have a husky 25 gal think it might be to small
We have a 30 gallon compressor with a pretty big motor on it to allow for a lot of CFM s for spraying. It's in storage right now or I would give you more specifications.

Question for mikegyver...after primed then lightly sanded then washed again is it silly to paint and clearcoat with a brush? Will it look bad?
I personally thing that the paint brush method will work but consistent coverage will be a problem. If you are using automotive clear coat, you have a limited amount of time to lay down the paint before it starts to harden. A cheap sprayer made all the difference in the world.

I personally would go get a 35 gallon compressor or borrow one that has a pretty high air flow and then I would go to harbor freight and buy an inexpensive HVLP gun. You will probably need to do your due diligence on TH-cam to learn how to spray it. We cut our paint with mineral spirits at about 4 to 1, paint to mineral spirits.
Mike slip was White 👋👋. my bus is flat black it's gonna be too hot I like red and White like Jax's Austin bus. Seeing that I'm calling the bus " The Mangia Bus" I might paint it the colors of the Italian flag green white and red . So, is that the only sanding you did before primer?? I'm hearing you have to sand the entire bus to at least remove the clear coat or even to bare metal?
We didn't do that and it seems to hold up just fine up to this point
