Painting the Skoolie Part 2: Color, Clear Coat & Pearl

- A lot of work went into painting the skoolie: in this episode we finally paint the body color, plus the trim, the clear coat and pearl! Of course, there were lengthy sessions of sanding, first before the primer, then after the primer, then AGAIN after the color! Finally, we were ready to spray the clear coat... which is when we added the pearl (powdered pigment) onto our paint job! The last thing was to spray all the black trim and bumper with plain clear coat (no pearl) so we'll have solid, jet black trim! Even with a few minor imperfections, we are thrilled with our new paint job!

Simply put, a Rustoleum paint job on your skoolie will look amazing but YOU HAVE TO USE AN AUTOMOTIVE CLEAR COAT!!! Rustoleum paint will chip and scratch too easily for a vehicle you want to use for adventure. Automotive clear coat is an extremely durable protectant that will protect the Rustoleum paint.
Mike learned to paint watching a video series on painting he paid for , www.rustoleumpaintjob.com . It was well worth he $20 or so we paid for it as it gave a step by step of preparation to primer to base coat to clear coat. He used this video series to learn how to mix and shoot the paint and how to set up the spray gun. Well worth the money.
We used the Ace hardware equivalent of Rustoleum paint. The reason was that Ace Hardware can tint their version of Rustoleum and have hundreds of color choices.
We used 5 star Extreme KLEARCOTE for the clear coat. It is a 2 part 1:4 mixture polyurethane automotive clear coat.

About Us:
Hi! We are Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1992 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty!

So good to finally see someone do a real paint job on a schoolie. It was a lot more work but it is BEAUTIFUL!
There is absolutely no way for us viewers to fathom the amount of work that went into this paint job... If we watched the whole job in real time it would be a 2-week marathon show at best.
That’s where I always quite watching the schoolie builds and unsubscribe when after going thru all the hard work of prepping everything and then they pull out a brush and roller!!!!! I’m a painter by trade and I just can’t stand to see something be so mistreated after someone spent hundreds of hours converting, installing window deletes, etc , and then your gonna paint it with a roller???? It’s bus abuse!!!!!! It’s like taking your 7 year old child to get a haircut and they pull out a blow torch and cut it with that!!!! And I just can’t watch anymore after that

I like the green! It’s a little brighter than the green I used on my bus. My wife wanted ours to look like a 1950’s appliance color green. Keep up the good work.
It’s shocking! Shockingly gorgeous!!! And I’m not a green fan at all!! The combo of green, black, white and pearl is beyond awesome!!!!!
I love it! Don't necessarily like green, but THE PACKERS are green and yellow, so you got it!! Also, re: your drips on the back--take advantage of it! Outline the drips and shadow it! I used to paint signs and graphics and my little shop car had "paint drips" running off the roof and on the back window. They are gonna see you coming and know who you are!!
