2 of the best things that helped me- stop going to target because can’t control my self in that store. Second, before I leave the house I make sure I EAT! If I don’t eat before running errands, I will almost always want to stop somewhere and buy fast food.
Hi ksquad! I made the plunge to get out of an abusive relationship and I feel so in control of my life right now. I signed my son up for soccer in the fall and I'm writing up a new budget just for me! Happy dance!
This is late, but I am SO PROUD OF YOU!!!! I've been there, not long ago. You leave and have NOTHING. I had a windfall is how I was able to get out . I am just over over 3 yrs out and while I still live in the rv I was able to purchase w that windfall, I love it here so much AND I now have 20k in my savings and I work as much as I can.( I enjoy work, as I wasn't "allowed" to before) idk yet what the money I'm saving is for but I'll figure it out when my gut tells me to. I think I'll get a feeling like. Ok... you have enough now. Start divying it up.... I hope this can be a little inspiration for you! You did the BEST thing for yourself AND your son. Keep pushing ahead no matter what.. the best is yet to come!!!! So much love and support to you, small country lady! From another small country lady 😆 hugs 🤗 ❤ 💙 ♥
I think the first time it 'clicked' was when a quarterly bill came in the mail and I opened it and paid it straight away without that moment of 'eeeeek' - because the money was in the account where it had been put aside, what a win. Thanks for the inspo Kate, love your vids - your energy is so motivating!
Knowing our actual numbers has been eye opening! It sounds silly but we didn’t do a budget for years just paid the bills and lived month to month. Now we are trying to manage staying in budget. We still struggling with groceries and are monthly gas is outrageous even with batching errands.
The gamechanger for me was not just budgeting, and tracking expenses, but putting a buffer in place so that I always know there's money there to cover perhaps unforeseen expenses I might have forgotten about (unlikely but not impossible). Just that little buffer has given me such peace of mind. Have a great weekend, Kate! Thank you for the glimpse of everyone's favourite camera hog at the end. 😀
I personally like a lot of buckets aka accts. I started teaching our daughter with 4 accts (actual jars), she has created 2 more, I'm so proud of her! FYI she is 14, I started very early with her 🥰
I fell off the "savings" wagon these past 5 weeks due to some stressful health issues with my husband. I've been shopping for clothes, shoes and accessories a little too much but I'm determined to get back on track and these types of videos help me a great deal. I'm binge watching yours and other frugal/minimalism channels for motivation. 👍🏼 Thank you!!
I used Every Dollar, then I used YNAB, then I used The Budget Mom. All of those methods are fine for the right people at the right time in their lives, but for now, I made a simple pen and paper spreadsheet. I put all of my categories on the left and then made 12 copies. I work in pencil so that I am able to easily make changes to the budget if necessary. All 3 of the methods I used are zero dollar budgets (monthly for Every Dollar and paycheck-by-paycheck for the other two), and I continue to abide by that principle. I don't enter money until I actually have it, and I make a new budget every month. Thank you, Kate, for repeating over and over again NOT TO GIVE UP! Sometimes it takes me awhile to "get it". That is what finally clicked for me, and you had a lot to do with it! Hi Buns!
The game changer for me was knowing actual numbers. I was not allowing enough money in our budget for certain things. Also, I've learned to not be hard on myself when I mess up. Thanks, Kate! 🙌
I started to figure it up week by week. Having a weekly budget let’s me break down my expenses and gives me more control. I also do a monthly calendar with my bills on it. That way I can see if something is coming up.
My life changed drastically when my company moved. I was driving 12 miles round trip to work 5 days a week. It's now 20 miles one way on a terrible high accident highway. I went from about $10 or $15 a week in gas to $40 or $50. I prayed for a better way. Then my boss suggested 4 10 hour days with Fridays off. This is my first Friday and oh man, I'm happy. Just a slight savings but now I can maybe think about starting my own bookkeeping business on the side. We'll see how this works for my company. But I'm suddenly back to adjusting and tracking my budget.
I started using YNAB 4 years ago. It is not cheap but for those who want to get into the weeds it cannot be beat. I love it so much I gifted it to my college age son so that he can learn to manage his money now. He has far fewer categories but told me that it helped him so much he would be willing to pay for it himself. Luckily YNAB gave him a free year. Win win.
Good morning Kate, The biggest money changer in my budgeting was checking my accounts daily! Because it showed me that I could put more into my savings and I could start my buffer in my checking account! Now, checking my account daily gets me excited in the morning because of the new goals I have in my budget! Have an awesome frugal Friday, Kate! And have a blessed weekend!
I don't know that we had a budget per say, but I so understand what you mean by wanting to pay off debt. When I got married for the 2nd time, my hubby and I had each already paid off a house which went to our spouses in the divorce settlement. So starting over meant starting with a new mortgage. Shortly after the purchase, the bank approached us about refinancing, so we bit & our payment dropped by about $200/month. But I thought wait a minute, we were comfortably able to make the payment, so I kept making the original payment. And then whenever, wr had extra money from eBay sales or a consulting job that my hubby had done, we slapped it on the mortgage. And then iI realized it was possible to pay the mortgage off in half the time. I even went to the local bank that held our mortgage and asked what our monthly payment needed to he to pay it off by our new date. To make an already too long if a story shorter we did it in half the time!!!
Thanks Kate for the refresher tips. Following you has helped me in so many ways! Peace of mind of being debt free. Have an Emergency fund. Having spend downs for Special Occasions, Christmas Fund, Community Events like festivals, fairs and fund raisers. It sure takes the stress off when things come up unforeseen! Love my frugal life style and budget. 💕 💰💕
Budget this! This so good. I’m determined to pay off my mortgage, my only debt, as quickly as I can. Everyday I check my finances and budget to know exactly where I am. ❤️
Love your show. Very inspiring. I like to use credit cards to get the points for air travel. Recently I have begun paying for big purchases on credit (like gas, haha) and coming home and transferring my money onto the credit card bill. I don't wait till the end of the month for the total. This way, I know that my purchases are already paid for. It is like using debit, but one step more with benefits!
I check my accounts every day as well. So satisfying! My money changer has been doing savings challenges!! I enjoy doing all varieties of them and watching them grow! 🤩💰
Happy Frugal Friday Kate Squad! My clicks have been works in progress. One was when I finally paid off my last credit card. The freedom! Most recent click I really like is once a week I download all activity in my checking account, and put on a spreadsheet. I am a spreadsheet geek. Use my debit card for everything. I color code line by line and keep a running total of each category - gas, groceries, etc. For ME this is simple, as Kate says, do what works for you. One "bad" habit - I like to buy expensive yarn. Last week I made an inventory of all the yarn I have and listed out all the projects I am working on. This was hard for me to do, as we all have one or two things we indulge in. It was kind of like adding up all your credit card debt. More yarn than I thought I had! The yarn has been purchased - enjoy what I have - and now I am going to USE up what I have. With inflation right now - buying yarn is out of the budget - but I have lots to keep me happy for now :-). Its all about being creative right? Budget and enjoy what I have.
My game changer was cutting the fat (magazine subscriptions, gym membership that was far from my house, Netflix, everything that wasn't needed for me to live...lol) AND tracking every penny. Once you see your spending in reality - there's no excuses anymore. Lol...I keep an old school ...ledger to track EVERYTHING...and that's what works for me best. Have a blessed day💕
BUDGET THIS! I cannot stand to owe money either. I love this entire video - because simplifying money management made it WORK for me. The outcome makes the effort so worthwhile.
Thank you for your pep talk! My budgeting was rubbish this month and I forgot to record some daily spending , but that doesn't mean I should just blow it. It's nearly August and now I'm excited to get back on track.
Love your content was late getting into this have about 5 years till retirement. So trying to catch up as much as I can. So taking my debt and breaking it down into a monthly goal. Was a game changer for me. Have a 3 year goal plus a 5 year goal. Making progress and easier to manage.
I come home from my weekend shopping I take my receipts, scan them into Fetch Rewards, and enter the receipts into their appropriate Every Dollar categories. My goals are to have my cars and mortgage completely paid off when I retire in two years. I like you advice to consolidate categories - I have way too many 🤣
We bought our house when we were young. We had a 30 year mortgage but we paid it as if it were a 15 year loan. When you pay more on your mortgage every month, make sure you have that extra go to “principal only.” We were able to pay it off quite early. People ask why we didn’t just get a 15 year loan. The reason is if something were to happen to us financially (long illness, lay-off etc.) we could go back to just paying the regular 30 year mortgage payment amount. That way we weren’t tied into the higher payment.
Budget this! I will tell you I do the Dave Ramsey envelope system and I have a lot of categories. It works for me and I always have what I need. Love your videos.
Budget this!! I allow a certain amount monthly for discretionary spending. At the end of the month, any cash left over goes in an envelope for purchasing Christmas gifts. Have used this for several years and it works out well. From this amount, I also take out $$ for property taxes and my quarterly water and sanitation bill. I still struggle with some things, but I’m definitely doing better.
Tracking one month to start made my world easy, from there on i budgeted and tracked for a couple of years. Your transactions skrink enormous once you start tracking anyway so it gets a routine afther a couple of moths. I kept watching Kate every week and she made me realise that automatic saving on payday is very succesfull
To make my grocery budgeting easy I buy $600 worth of Walmart gift cards at the beginning of the month for our family of 5. I don't have to track it because I can see what I have left.
I always learn something new from you!!! Adjusting the budget during the month has not been something I've considered doing. I thought it would be "cheating" . LOL
My game changing in my budget is when I get payed I take out what I need for week then leave payment card at home once that money is finished that's it untile pay day again
You are truly an inspiration Kate thank you so much! You are helping me SO much to get back on track!! 👍🌞🤑 I saw some of your videos for the 1st time yesterday and I immediately downloaded the every dollar app and sat down on my computer to set up my budget. I already feel a 100% better knowing exactly where I stand! I know what my goal is ,I know how long it's going to take me to get there, and now I just need to be patient with the process. Losing debt is a lot like losing weight: it didn't come on all at once and it's not going come off all at once!! We need to be patient with ourselves and the process yet remain positive and persistent. Patience and persistence prevail 🤣👍🌞
"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time." - Thomas Edison (Sure wish I had said it)
Budget this! I’ve loved doing a budget. I’m a planner. It’s really helped me as I’ve started managing my money (I bought a house and graduated and got a job)!
Great content as always! I have some Kate binging to do after camping with no Technology for 3 weeks. 🌻 Paying attention and being allergic to debt. I always celebrate with self love and compassion how well I am doing. Not focusing on what could have been. Always grateful! 🌻💕💐🌼🌻
Writing eveything down in preparation for pay day so I knew the 5 Ws...Recently separated from spouse of 29 years... and budgeting "MY"money has been amazing and given me the control I need to succeed... I definitely have a tighter budget now, but I am much better with that money and on my way to being debt free. I love videos like this one and giving every dollar a purpose at the beginning of my pay periods is my number one strategy to achieve this. Thank you.
Oh my Buns is so cute 🥰. I hope he’s doing well. The best thing I have done is automatic savings every month. It comes out and I don’t even think about it. We’ve built up a very good nest egg and emergency savings this way.
The one thing that clicked and changed everything for me was : check your bank account daily. As soon as I did it, it changed everything, I knew my spendings, it created the need of less transactions, I simplified things, I saw the groceries overspending and it allowed myself to understand the sinking fund principle for big car repairs for example. It changed everything.
The biggest game changer for me was switching to a zero balance budget - it was like a switch flicked in my brain - my savings have never been so healthy and like you said - it has become a habit, don’t even think about it anymore - it’s just automatic xx
Budget this! Thank you Kate! I love your beyond relatable approach to personal finances. It feels like falling & having a helping hand get you back up. 💗✅️🙌
Wow love your channel 👍❤ I found your channel from Jan from NY. I had a great teacher my mom and you keep me going and staying on course. Thanks for sharing 👍😊❤
I can't wait to watch this after work tomorrow! This is where I'm not doing the greatest. We just brought a house for the 1st time. And with living expenses going up. In the old budget I had money into savings but it's going into living expenses now. And how is your kitty doing?
Ooooh Amber, I hope this video is so helpful! My kitty is okay! He's an angel dealing with the meds etc. My sweet boy! Just hope we can clear up this toe!
I know that I have mentioned this before. But I am amazed at how much the little things add up, as I was totally oblivious to it. Buying something simple like gum or a candy bar didn't seem like it was that big of a deal. But I had my bank take a couple dollars out of my checking account. And I didn't pay any attention, until one day there was over a hundred dollars. It totally impressed me. It was my light bulb moment.
Oh, those little things! My friends thought they had over $100 in their checking account when they got a non-sufficient funds notice in the mail. Wake up call! Their bank charged monthly fees and they never opened the statements (this was before online banking) so they weren't subtracting them from their balance. They asked me to go over their statements and checkbook to help them figure out the mess. We got it all figured out, but those relatively small fees really added up.
best tip,if you have an erratic income, budget for the lowest amount you know you get. save bills,bank/credit union, credit card, sales receipts. check all insurances to find out exactly what coverage you pay for. home repairs? call up your insurance company to see who they use.it often saves a lot of money. know your triggers. make it as hard to spend impulsively as possible. use cash instead of a credit card. gift cards count as actual money, and should be counted as such. if you get a ,say,$250 gift card for groceries, and your budget is ,say,$400 per month, that gift card counts as food budget. it will keep you on track this way. actually use what you buy
Budget This! Re-adjusting the budget on line items gas & electric because of the price hike. Because I was faithfully tracking my spending, it was no big deal to adjust the dollar amounts. I knew where I could cut and then add to these two expensive bills. Also, I research ways to adjust my actions so I used the gas and electricity more productively. Thanks again for sharing.
What helped me was the envople method n the zero based budget. I do both so I dont need to track my spending bc all of my bills are on automatic bill pay and my grocery budget is all free. So there you go!😊
I love budgeting too. What clicked for me was not doing micro categories....I do a budget for savings, gasoline, grocery, bills, and floating (which is like eating out, craft supplies, new toys, fun experience, gift giving, etc). It made it so much better for me.
I'm a details person so I geek out on things like tracking my expenditures. But for me, having a budget didn't mean i had control of my money back in the day. i was just tracking it as it went out the door. I had to get into frugality before things really clicked. Creating a situation where i could make sure i had some savings every month. That's where guidance from people like Kate came in. So I guess if I had to choose a tip, it would be to be frugal. But then the K-Squad already knows this. 😀
I just checked through your playlists and wondering if you have a video on how to use the every dollar app. Actually inputting your items each morning. I'd love to see that!
Super helpful. Thank you! I'm holding on to a goal of paying a higher amount toward a lower balance credit card while maintain timely minimums with the rest- three months to go. It's tempting to try to pay more than I can afford to get it over with, but I'm committed to sticking with the set amount for the next three months and it will be paid off. Then, I can regroup, will have set a good discipline, and move on to the next one. And I love the zero budget idea!
We are paid once a month, use EveryDollar, and have four cash envelope categories. A game changer for me was learning to stay under my "weekly" totals for each category and not borrow from the upcoming week. We typically end the month with money left over in some of these categories. And once we built our budget buffer, the paychecks received in mid-month are technically the upcoming month's monies and budgeted that way. Cheers to daily AM coffee and budgeting!
Thanks Kate Happy frugal Friday 👍 Please wish Kaden a Happy 9th Birthday and have a lovely time celebrating on Sunday 🥳 Squeeze Buns from me 😻 You're in my thoughts 💙

Agree with Target

We need to be patient with ourselves and the process yet remain positive and persistent. Patience and persistence prevail 🤣👍🌞
"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time."
- Thomas Edison
(Sure wish I had said it)
Great quote! Thanks Robin!
budget this!!! I'm also using a zero based budget combined with cash envelopes for appropriate categories and setting up more things for auto pay.
Excited for this one! I love a good frugal list 😍🤩
See you soon!
Budget this!! ☺️
Budget This! Tracking was major for us as you can't argue with the numbers! Xx
YASSSSSS!!!
What clicked for me was realizing that I have been debt free before and reminding myself that I can do it again -- that was a game changer for me! 👍🌞
Budget this, girl!
Love these tips! Starting my own business and I will definitely be doing the envelope system😊🙏👍
AWESOME! Congrats on starting your business!
Thank you.
I have two savings accounts set for auto draft so I pay myself first!
Oh my Buns is so cute 🥰. I hope he’s doing well.
The best thing I have done is automatic savings every month. It comes out and I don’t even think about it. We’ve built up a very good nest egg and emergency savings this way.
LOVE THIS!
Budget this, still with you, always watch the full video.😊
Thank you SO much!
YASSSS NELLY!!!!!
The biggest game changer for me was switching to a zero balance budget - it was like a switch flicked in my brain - my savings have never been so healthy and like you said - it has become a habit, don’t even think about it anymore - it’s just automatic xx
YASSSS Joanne!
I wish I could thumbs up your videos more then once! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍!!!Love Love Love them..💜
You are the sweetest! THANK YOU!!!
Budget this!! My budget lightbulb moment was sinking funds!
I totally agree!!
Budget this! Thank you Kate! I love your beyond relatable approach to personal finances. It feels like falling & having a helping hand get you back up. 💗✅️🙌
Thank you SO MUCH for this kind comment!! YASSS! This made me smile. I want to be that helping hand! Thanks Alejandra. So glad my content is helpful:)
I HAVE to check my accounts/budget every day. It helps me clearly walk through each day knowing exactly where I stand. Thanks for your video!!! ❤️
YESS RAMONA! Me too!!!
@@KateKaden ok I need to start tracking my spending again. This is my problem. I stopped when we moved.
It's the small amounts that play havoc on budgeting.
YESS VONA! It's ALARMING! AHHHH! Thanks for watching and sharing with us. It adds up so quick!
We got it all figured out, but those relatively small fees really added up.
best tip,if you have an erratic income, budget for the lowest amount you know you get.
save bills,bank/credit union,credit card,sales receipts.
check all insurances to find out exactly what coverage you pay for.
home repairs?
call up your insurance company to see who they use.it often saves a lot of money.
know your triggers.
make it as hard to spend impulsively as possible.
use cash instead of a credit card.
gift cards count as actual money, and should be counted as such.
if you get a ,say,$250 gift card for groceries, and your budget is ,say,$400 per month, that gift card counts as food budget.
it will keep you on track this way.
actually use what you buy
Thank you Rochelle!!!!! Great stand outs! Have an amazing weekend!
Love the idea of having only 4 budget categories! It works, and it’s so much simpler.
YESSSSS Jackie!!! Thanks so much for watching! I love only having 4 categories!
You are so welcome. Thank you so much for watching and sharing with us Katherine!
What helped me was the envople method n the zero based budget.
I do both so I dont need to track my spending bc all of my bills are on automatic bill pay and my grocery budget is all free. So there you go!😊
Good morning Kate, Kaden, Buns Mr Hannum and K Squad!! Just wanted to share that I've started my 2023 budget....
EXCITING MARIE! YASSS!!!! You are so far ahead of the game! YAY!
Great tips as always! Sticking a few of these in my mental back pocket!
YAS! Thanks for watching Kayla! hope it was helpful!
Such a good idea to round up or round down!
Thank you Jax!!!! Always SO happy to see you here!!!
Thank you Kate for another great and inspiring video. I hope Buns is doing better.🐱❤
I love budgeting too. What clicked for me was not doing micro categories....I do a budget for savings, gasoline, grocery, bills, and floating (which is like eating out, craft supplies, new toys, fun experience, gift giving, etc). It made it so much better for me.
Budget on Kate!
YASSSS KARLA!!!!!! Thank you so much for watching!
Budget this. Love your videos.
Rizka, thank you so much!
Budget this :)
Love frugal Friday - hope you’re doing well !
Me tooooooo! Thank you so much for being here each Friday Christina!
Paula, thank you so much!
Budget this!! Great video!
I do everything you just said and it all works!
YASSS Liza!
Thank you Kate ❤️

Hi Kate, I really like Every Dollar & checking my accounts daily. This has become a new habit.
Great video got a few tips 👍
I just checked through your playlists and wondering if you have a video on how to use the every dollar app. Actually inputting your items each morning. I'd love to see that!
Hi Gail! Here it is! Thanks so much for watching!!

YASSS CATHY!!!!!
Budget this!!! Good advice!
Thanks so much Kallen!
Budget this and yes set goals
YASS! Thanks for watching Natalie!
Reconciling my budget every month really made the difference for me.
Budget THIS!
YASSS!!!!!!
YASSS!!!! Love this!
Budget this! 👍🏾
