@@dorisward-mindfullivingcon875by living on less- 4K less per year than her 12,840 yearly income. She likely has no debt. By setting savings aside she is preparing for emergency expenses so she doesn’t need to go into debt to deal with an emergency. My biggest money sponge used to be eating at restaurants, plus the expensive drinks that came with it. Now it's 3 things: dairy, alcohol, and random admin expenses or unforeseen expenses. - Dairy: don't laugh, but I love cheese, and I love putting half&half in my coffee every morning. I always try to buy dairy on sale, but it's still expensive, and I consume way too much of it. Probably close to 25% of my grocery budget is dairy :O - Alcohol: I drink less these days, but this is still expensive, and takes up too much of my budget. Not going out and only drinking at home with my boyfriend helps, but still too much $ is spent in this category. - Admin expenses/unforeseen expenses: Oh, need a new passport? $200! Some fee you forgot about or didn't even know about? $160! Etc. It adds up. So in 2021 I will cut back on the cheese a bit, set a stricter alcohol budget and have at least 2 months of the year completely sober (I actually did it this year too, and already spent less in total), and set aside a bit of $ each paycheck to admin/unforeseen, so that when those extras happen, I will already have it covered.

My mum always said: “No se puede estirar el pie mas de lo que da la manta” “ you can’t stretch your foot longer that what the blanket covers”. She always told us, even as kids, that if you earn ten you get to spend nine but you have to save one, because if you earn ten and you spend eleven you owe one to somebody, and that’s a real problem. Us Spaniards traditionally don’t use credit. We are starting to copy american models but luckily consumer debt is not extended yet. We usually use credit for housing and cars and some people use it for vacations... dangerous in my opinion. I am debt free except for one mortgage and I cannot wait to sell that flat an become completely debt free!

I love that show till death do us part. I used to watch it all the time. At my job I get to help people with their budgets. It is shocking to see people making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year not knowing what their expenses are and living way above their means and in so much debt. I always get surprised by the people making minimum incomes and being able to save and not be in debt. Just like you said sometimes it’s not about the money coming in it’s about the money going out. I completely agree with you when it comes to groceries that’s where the savings is. There are so many ways to save money on food. Meal planning to me is the #1 tip. Great job as always! Loved every minute of it.
Kate you are preaching to the choir with me..I got started later in life...I'm debt free other than my small mortgage...don't miss a thing I gave up and love looking at my savings and retirement accounts. Keep spreading the word!

I wish I had learned about finance in high school and college. It should be required to take a class about money including credit cards, budgets, investing, and keeping track of how much you earn vs. how much you spend. Nobody teaches us that. Credit cards are not "free money". But nobody tells you that and you think paying the minimum payment is paying it back slowly. But nobody talks about the interest rate and how you end up paying much more than the item actually costs. Luckily I learned albeit late in life, I am now debt free and will NEVER be in debt again. I’m hoping it gets easier & praying I don’t give up (again). Another struggle has been using credit cards to buy all the monthly things, overspending, then struggling to pay them off before interest hits...such a cycle! I’m SO close to them being 100% paid off!! As I use them, I transfer the money immediately. Again, time consuming. But! I do believe that because it’s been such a struggle that once we get 100% ahead of it, we WONT go back! Thanks for the video!! Defiantly inspires me to keep pressing in!!

Thanks Kate, wish I'd have done that when I was working, I started working at 15years old and retired at 68 year's old, I'm not in dept and I do have money saved now but I have been in dept and what a horrible feeling going to bed worrying and waking up and the worry pops back in your head, I help my daughter a lot she's a single mum of two and she struggles, but lately I've been nagging her to budget, she's always going food shopping and buying more than she needed. I have given her your TH-cam channel and told her to follow and learn. 🤞❤️🏴
I have trouble spending less on my groceries. I realize I’m an impulse grocery spender and my family is all overweight because of it. I look at baking and cooking big meals as loving. I have to change this mindset, but don’t know how to start.
Years ago I had the most shocking but also most rewarding day when I finally sat down and embraced a budget. In my case what finally worked for me was using YNAB to get ahold of spending and income. From that point forward I have moved the needle forward in terms of personal financial stability and responsibilities. It is a game changer when you finally see where your money is going, where your money is coming from and what you are choosing to spend it on.
OMG Kate, I've never heard of 'Till debt us do part'. Living in the UK England. Am totally binge watching this now on TH-cam. Wish I'd known about this show before - would have saved by putting off paying for NF lol. Thanks for telling us about it. I've been listening to Dave Ramsey on youtube and although I totally agree with some of the principles of saving for an emergency etc etc. I find this lady TOTALLY on my level and much easier to relate to on a more 'personal' level. It makes a change to hear 'if you follow our baby steps you need to do ....".
Yep, that show is wild. The food budget they get throws me off because it's Canadian, but besides that it's like woah. I can't imagine not knowing my mortgage
I feel you on this one finally decided to track my two problem areas food and shopping has helped saved me a ton on money. I was that person spending around $400 over what my budget was.
It really made me think about budgeting when you said your son knows all we need to know. It's addition and subtraction. Just subtract less then you add in during the month!
I love that show, too. Gail is fantastic, a good blend of blunt but compassionate. Another great show, if you can find it, is Larry Winget's "Big Spender". I learned SO much from these shows when we first started our personal finance journey. Great video, hope you and the little man have a GREAT weekend!
Hadn’t been by in a while, Kate, but had to see what was up with the squad. As always, you bring sensible topics to the screen and tell people things they may not want to hear, but need to hear. Hope you and Kaden are safe and warm! ❤️
Kate I spend more money than I earn but its in investments that I will get back later at my choosing. But certainly a good point for people that live beyond their means.
I love "Till debt do us part!" And what wonderful reminder about spending only what you earn. I learned decades ago (from a story about the Mars Company--you know, the candy company) only to borrow, if you must borrow, an amount that you already have in the bank, so that, in a pinch, you can pay off the debt and not risk financial ruin. I thought that was a good plan. Seems like you wouldn't need to borrow if you have the money in the bank. Seems like you could just buy it. But if that leaves you without savings, that could not be a good idea. Now that's what I learned for when I did use debt. I don't use it any more at all except for mortgage. But for mortgage, I pay bi-weekly, so that there's an automatic extra payment a year. That saves thousands in interest over the years and shaves years off the mortgage. Great video, Kate. Always enjoy yours.
Hi I’m new here and have enjoyed your videos. I’m not in debt but I feel like I went crazy with spending this last year. So I’m going to take control in January. I just called my internet company and got my bill lowered by $15 a month for 1 year.
Simple but true! And not always happening. Great reminder! I need to keep track on my grocery shopping again. I was on top of it until this year hit and somehow lost track! You def motivated me to write the spending down again!
I would have thought the “biggest tip” would be tracking expenses. Tracking helps to spend less than you make. I buy 1 or 2 “RECORD, 12 column” books at Staples yrly & it’s helped tremendously over time. Label the columns, give each a spending total & start subtracting or adding as things come up or $ comes in. I’ve tried the Dave Ramsey app & just get lost every month. This is pen to paper, easily correctable.
Great video Kate! It really is that simple. Not easy, but that simple. And I found till death do us part maybe last year and I binged watched I think almost all of them. Gail really does show them/us how simple it really is and that we can all do it!
Hi, I came across this video almost two years after the fact but was still riveted. Truly one of your best, Kate, wiser words were never spoken. I'm a Gail Vaz-Oxlade fan too. She gave me the final pieces to the puzzle. It was so bittersweet to see Buns though. Poor baby. :(
Thank you so so much!!!! (Paula, sometimes I just get so sad watching the old videos and seeing his most precious perfect face...yet I'm still so grateful for those 16 years!) But ...sometimes it still crushes me. Miss him so much!
Right? and it's the same idea over and over again...but I get it. People want more, but if they could just spend less than they earn...Thank you so much for watching!
For those of us that saw no decrease in income during the pandemic the $1200/person was a big help this year. At least it was for me. I was able to get some work done on my house that I had been putting off. If we get another windfall this winter I’ll be able to put it towards a new mattress. This one has my back aching and my husband complaining. My best to everyone. Hope you are all well and able to work.
I have learned to budget 850 instead of the full amount. Learning to learn to live off a smaller amount in order to pay debt off and save for a expense car repair
I'm on SSDI n save 50 percent of my income....n the rest of it will be going to my car which I will pay for it all CASH.....!! I can only hope that I will be able to make it to my 5 year mark....😊
Till debt do us part, I LOVE this show!!! Just like I love your videos! Thanks. Spend less than you earn, WOW, so easy to say, such an easy concept. Wish more of us would do this! Be blessed !
All excellent info. It is the best feeling in the world to be debt free, have savings, pay bills on time, owe no-one and can spend occasionally on gifts, dinners out vacations and unexpected needs/emergencies. 💕😍💕 Keep the encouragement coming; so appreciated.
One of the Hardest lesson I learned in life ...was spending more than I earned. Don’t know what I was thinking??? Credit cards were self paying???hahahahah
Hi Kate Three of my friends and their spouses were on Til Debt do us Part. Sadly none kept up with the lessons Gail taught and they ended up in more debt and all 3 couples divorced. Consistency is key!
A guy i worked with but couldnt stand him. Had 7 filing cabinet drawers. He had 7 file folders each drawer had a year in it. The folders were designated for every expenditure. Any thing he bought no matter what it was got a receipt for it. Hed note on the receipt what the money was soent on. Hed put the receipt in behind of the last . When the IRS wanted to see his receipts he just pulled the year they wanted folder and took it in. No looking thru shoe boxes for receipts n so on. It works.
I also love the show but I’ve never seen one with a single person- only with couples. I just wish they would feature one with single parent which is my reality. Loving all your videos.
Kate - A video you may want to make is how ways your squad has found success in getting their partners onboard with budgeting. It's such a creative bunch and to be honest it took me years to get my spouse on board. The same approach doesn't work for every household so learning how others "approached" it might be useful. In Til Debt do us Part that was instrumental. Being a broken record with your significant other isn't going to be successful. What techniques worked? Would love to hear their ideas even though thankfully I now have mine on board.
brillant kate, I'll have to watch that tracking and money wasted on food and really needing to track were the things that changes things although I was wired as a natural spender i try to change to speech now by action the Kate method is written on post it on my pH since last yr x my girls watch your vids often and look for buns too
Hi Kate! I also started watching 'Til Debt Do Us Apart a couple months back, and I really love the episodes- I get so excited I want my family to watch it with me, they don't care, lol... Great video as always, thank you😊
As silly as this may sound I am so close to being debt free that I now have a lot of extra money which I am still not used to - I guess I am not content at times until all my money is gone because that is how I am used to living when I did have a lot of debt - now I am treating other people to meals etc. cause I couldn’t do that before - so I guess I just don’t like keeping too much money 🤷♀️😉
If your money is bothering you maybe you can start investing on an indexed fund or high yield savings account, so you don’t see that money in your checking account...or repaying your debt faster so the money is gone (but the debt is gone too)
@@carolc2574 yes that is a wonderful idea ! I will up the amount I put in my 401k and I will try things off in bigger amount or at once - thanks for responding 🙂👍

My mom is 97 and lives an airline flight away. I visit her 3-4 times a year -- more often these days to help with health emergencies, etc. I do okay with my monthly budget but I usually don't have enough cash to cover all the trip expenses and end up putting some on a credit card. Now that I've found you, I'm trying to include in my quarterly budget. However, what if a trip is unexpected (due to family issue)? Is it better to draw on my buffer? Then pay myself back?

Thanks Kate, wish I'd have done that when I was working, I started working at 15years old and retired at 68 year's old, I'm not in dept and I do have money saved now but I have been in dept and what a horrible feeling going to bed worrying and waking up and the worry pops back in your head, I help my daughter a lot she's a single mum of two and she struggles, but lately I've been nagging her to budget, she's always going food shopping and buying more than she needed. I have given her your TH-cam channel and told her to follow and learn. 🤞❤️🏴
Jan, thank you so much!
Try to get her to watch Gail Vaz Oxlade’s show as well. She might recognize herself and start to change!
@@cherylT321 Thank you will do.
I have trouble spending less on my groceries. I realize I’m an impulse grocery spender and my family is all overweight because of it. I look at baking and cooking big meals as loving. I have to change this mindset, but don’t know how to start.
You can always try cooking from Clean Eating magazine instead.
Good (and true) content! Thanks for your caring Self!
Thanks so much Jeanne!
It really is as simple and as hard as that.
Going to relisten to: How low can you go? 👂👍👏👏
Yasss!!!!!!
I love watching you .You make me have hope .
🙌❤️🙏
I LOVE that show. I binge watched it last year! It really helped to change my spending habits!
Right!? It's so good!!! AHHH! Hi Cherie, have a great weekend. Thank you for watching!!!
I'll check it out! Thank you so much!
Hadn’t been by in a while, Kate, but had to see what was up with the squad. As always, you bring sensible topics to the screen and tell people things they may not want to hear, but need to hear. Hope you and Kaden are safe and warm! ❤️
Thank you for the great tips bought Christmas with money this year not stressing about it.
I’ve started watching that show! I’m addicted Just started watching season 7.
Kate I spend more money than I earn but its in investments that I will get back later at my choosing. But certainly a good point for people that live beyond their means.
The end of debt is in sight. Thanks for your help..
I need to earn more. I’m a terrible negotiator and I’ll just accept anything! But I’m working on it!
I’m so gas you are here Cleo! Welcome to the family!
That’s also verrrry important
I just watch this old video Kate. This is such a good reminder ❤
Thank you!!!
"Information and motivation for transformation" you said that in this one so I thought I'd reflect it back and say thank you 😊
🙏❤️🥰
I can’t tell you how many people I talk to who have NO CLUE what their base salary is. Literally no clue.
Great video Kate! It really is that simple. Not easy, but that simple. And I found till death do us part maybe last year and I binged watched I think almost all of them. Gail really does show them/us how simple it really is and that we can all do it!
Hi Kate; well said! I even can't watch these programs because I suffer to see how people are not interested in their own budget.
Ahh! Brutal!!!
Great advice as usual! Still working on digging ourselves out but the hole is getting smaller! 😃
Good ole Common Sense works. That show makes my chin drop every time. 😄😄
Right? and it's the same idea over and over again...but I get it. People want more, but if they could just spend less than they earn...Thank you so much for watching!
I LOVE that show, too!
Such a good show! Thanks so much for watching Lauren!
Kate, you share some amazing tips. These videos keep me on track with my savings goals!!
I'm so so glad! This makes me so happy to hear. Appreciate you so much Tina!
I love that show!!
I keep watching it and trying to follow her advice even though I don’t place cash into jars🤗
Yes I don't do the jars either, but I can see how that would work for sure!
💙💜 Live below your means playlist please 😊
I have learned to budget 850 instead of the full amount. Learning to learn to live off a smaller amount in order to pay debt off and save for a expense car repair
AWESOME TAMI!!!!!
I'm on SSDI n save 50 percent of my income....n the rest of it will be going to my car which I will pay for it all CASH.....!! I can only hope that I will be able to make it to my 5 year mark....😊
Thank you Kate for your inspirational videos and pieces of advice!! Big hugs from Italy, Stefania
Just popped in to say hello, great to see your site grow, take care...
Till debt do us part, I LOVE this show!!! Just like I love your videos! Thanks. Spend less than you earn, WOW, so easy to say, such an easy concept. Wish more of us would do this! Be blessed !
Glad you like them! Thank you so much Lisa! SOOO glad you are here!
All excellent info. It is the best feeling in the world to be debt free, have savings, pay bills on time, owe no-one and can spend occasionally on gifts, dinners out vacations and unexpected needs/emergencies. 💕😍💕 Keep the encouragement coming; so appreciated.
Love this, thank you SO much Judy!
NO WAY!!! You knew them! AHHHH!!!!! You're right. Consistency IS key!
I hope you found new friends; people who want to live a frugal lifestyle and stay out of debt!
@@cherylT321 they are still my friends! We respect each other’s way of living and the choices we make in life.
@@2oldcrowscleaning538 That’s good, then!
Totally off topic - sorry, but your hair is AWESOME.
Thank you so much Robin!
Great advice! 👌
It works.
Kate thank you for all your videos
I also love the show but I’ve never seen one with a single person- only with couples. I just wish they would feature one with single parent which is my reality. Loving all your videos.
I hear that Mary Ann! I saw ONE with a single Mom and she was in a LOT OF financial trouble. My heart was bleeding for her. Gail to the rescue!
Thank you,
Kate!
🥰🥰🥰🥰
Oooh I love that show! I am an envelope system girl normally, but a lot of shops in the uk are not taking cash during Covid so having to adapt.
I have binge listening/watching Till Debt do us part! Thank you for the recommendation! I love it!
You are so welcome! Thank you so much for being here Shea!!!
I love the challenge of living below my monthly income....800.00 a month.....I save 170.00 every month,
Yass Kelly!!!
This is a great idea because I hear that over and over that the spouse is not on board. ❤️
brillant kate, I'll have to watch that tracking and money wasted on food and really needing to track were the things that changes things although I was wired as a natural spender i try to change to speech now by action the Kate method is written on post it on my pH since last yr x my girls watch your vids often and look for buns too
Sarah I love this comment SO much! THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
Your tips are truly inspiring! Thanks so much for being you! Jan
Hello my Jan! Adore you and your support is everything! Thank you!
Hi Kate! I also started watching 'Til Debt Do Us Apart a couple months back, and I really love the episodes- I get so excited I want my family to watch it with me, they don't care, lol... Great video as always, thank you😊
LOL! I hear that. I'm the only one in my family pumped about everything I talk about! LOL!!!!! That's okay, we have each other!!! :)
Love this video!!!! Love it!!!!! Love from Sweden 😀❤
Thank you so so much!!!! Thank you for watching and sharing this kind comment! I appreciate you a lot!!!!
I need to spend less!! I am working hard at bringing down my current balances (credit cards. My goal is to pay off my car and reduce my credit card debt in half. It’s hardest during the holiday!!
You can do this!!!!
Don't give up. Binge watching Dave Ramsey, Kate, and minimalism videos is what helped me tremendously in becoming debt free and now with a fully funded ER fund. You can do it too!!
Absolutely! BUFFER TO THE RESCUE, then replenish as you can:) YASSS Diane!
I love till debt do us part! So sad that they had to cancel it.
Yeah such a bummer!!!
I learned a lot watching that show back in the day!
