It is also one of the brands in the Holy Trinity or Big Three of luxury watches and the watch of choice for the discerning conisseur and the rich and famous. Patek Philippe is one of only a handful of brands that will hold or increase in value.
Patek Philippe has a tremendous history and many patents and innovations to it's name. It has also stuck to it's gun of producing luxury pieces without moving downmarket. In short it is a brand that is admired and revered by both the casual watch collector and horoligists alike.

There is another family-owned watchmaker in Geneva and that is Chopard which is owned by the Scheufele family. Please do not dismiss Chopard as a jewelry house because they started out as a watchmaker and only ventured into jewelry in the second half of the 20th century.

Charles Smith Daniel Wellington, MVMT, Vincero, and other companies like those are not good. They look very nice but are very overpriced because most of the money you pay to buy a watch goes to marketing. If you want nice budget watches look at Orient, Seiko, Citizen, or Timex.
