    You don't get it. He's an anime protagonist. He will chase and realize his dream despite the overwhelming odds, prove the naysayers wrong and get a harem while at it from which he will choose the childhood friend at the end of the inspirational story. He will succeed because the plot and fate is on his side.

    In hindsight its wild how similar my mindset was when I was 15/16 and I'm 25 now.
    What I didn't realize was the reason I kept bouncing off of everything and never being able to settle on a passion or career path was due to my intense depression and trauma coupled with how stifling and suffocating it felt being in high school and havung so many people with different expectations for your future. It was so hard to envision myself with a future because I just wasn't comfortable or content with any aspect of my life at the time. I couldn't focus, I couldn't envision myself ever being good enough at anything to be wanted or admired in any career field. I had no self esteem and no sense of direction coupled with a depression that made me borderline agoraphobic when it came to going to school or even being around family.
    I enjoyed playing games though because that was my primary sense of escapism, so I just saw pro gamers and thought "Ok, I guess this is what I want my future to be, because nothing else feels worth living for or even tangible in the first place"
    Now that I'm on medication, in therapy and working through that trauma its opened my mind up and has allowed me to focus and set genuine career goals for myself while paying more attention to my hobbies. I still have my fair share of issues but I definitely relate to where this dude's head was at the time.
    I hope he's in a better place now

      Late reply, but I'd just wanted to say that I also struggled with depression and similar issues and used games as an escape. Glad to hear you're in a better place now 🙂

    • @CB66941
      @CB66941 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@FelipeWalker2 Essentially it's a concept that gamers play video games to "escape" from reality for a while.
      It's also an unfortunate argument against certain games that shouldn't include real life issues or problems because "I play games for escapism"

  • @jakedge3
    @jakedge3 9 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    Honestly, I applaud the kid for wanting to follow his/her dreams, it's nice to see people shooting so high in whatever they want to do and being honest with themselves about their motivations, but the guys at srk made a valid point.
    if you're truly determined you need to have a grounded plan and design, or at least some means of supporting it.
    Me? My goal is to get my dan into pro games, but I just suck so bad, when I was playing a long while back my dan was actually bordering B-rank and I was the top 70, which for dan on pc might as well be the top 7000 but you get the idea.
    i learned the hard way that to improve yourself and become better at something and follow your dreams you HAVE to persevere, there is no truly easy path in this regard, so if you're determined and willing to go through true hardship for your dreams, then you can pursue those dreams.
    but never assume it's going to be easy, you have to make it easy by applying the right mindset, by pushing ahead and striving for self improvement.
    getting a job or some form of financing to help support this desire/not fucking putting all your eggs in a single basket like a moron is basically the best advice those guys could give.
    hell I"ve been setting up my own business because I'm only motivated to do certain things like writing and art, it's hard as hell making ends meet but i knew the consequences of my decisions when I set out to accomplish them and I relish in the difficulty and how I cheapen the difficulty every day by just doing it and striving to improve my outlook on life.
    I raise my own bar and set my own standards, life is only hard if you want it to be i tell myself. there are always avenues people can pursue if they're independent minded and just want to work for themselves, but it's extremely rough getting that started and isn't for everyone.
    There's really no "right way" to live life, there's a sensible easy path, and then there's that hard as balls unnecessary path for prideful fucks like me who just want to prove that the easy way isn't always the most rewarding, even if it's the one people are taking.
    TL;DR
    don't just say you're going to pursue some lifelong dream if you're not ready for the consequences, but don't let that deter you if you're really determined. have a plan, work it out, put in that effort, really put in that effort and work as hard as possible to achieve those lofty goals. anyone can reach them, but you can't be lazy about it. those goals are lofty for a reason.

    As someone who hasn't been playing fighting games since they were created, I have a certain sympathy for dude. I look to people like Gootecks and Mike Ross, Combofiend, and Maximilian as guys who manage to surround themselves with the game and community they love but in a super grounded way. They worked for years and got somewhere which, as was said, is possible in almost any undertaking(the 'I can't draw, Ill just quit' people have always made me laugh/cry). Fighting games have strange parallels to other kinds of real personal growth. Coming back after a failure, recognizing your flaws and working at fixing them, being humble, knowing yourself, asking for help, etc. Also I highly doubt this guy's on 'the spectrum', he seems socially able and self-aware enough, he's just YOUNG poor guy...

    • @Bafael
      @Bafael  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Capin91 believe it or not I have a lot of sympathy for him too, thinking about him talking about his dream and why it won't fly is like when I first realized myself that being #1 in the world isn't a practical goal.

      @Capin91 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Bafael Nah I believe it, haha. You're all good man, I know how much you do for low level players. I know you weren't just shitting on the guy, just that weird teenage attitude he had. Fighting games DO take me into weird pseudo-philosophical headspace sometimes, which is part of why I love 'em. And yeah, being the #1 guy isn't really a good goal. Or rather, it isn't a good starting point for a realistic plan. That's how you crush yourself, because progress is invisible on a scale like that. Small bites

      "or becoming an artist in the manga style"
      lmaoooo, for someone that isn't even motivated enough to learn programming he sure is surefire he can pick up how to draw manga. You know, just casually learn one of the most complex and in-depth forms of drawing available that require mastery of basically every aspect of art-fundamentals from composition to anatomy and perspective to architecture and form mostly produced by severely overworked and underpaid artists that have been drawing since childhood in societies like Japan/Korea that are known to have "absolutely no chill" on the side of his equally motivated drive to learn SF4/5.
      At least he's realistic about not becoming an artist but not out of an understanding of why it's basically impossible, he's just envious of other people that already put in the work and *that* is why he doesn't have any motivation. What a lameass anime protag.

    I'm not entirely sure why I watched 9 minutes of this video. I thought, since you tend to make good videos to help out people trying to understand the game, that this would actually be an interesting thread to discuss, not just a way for you to make fun of a delusional teenager.
    My friend had this exact same mindset in Marvel a couple of years ago coming from hardly ever playing a fighting game before, and while he never went pro or anything like that, he practiced every day for two years and ended up getting top 32 or something like that at EVO last year.

    • @Bafael
      @Bafael  9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      +SivartAuhsoj Well I'll happily discuss it as long as you want to. Let me first say that I see absolutely nothing wrong or weird about wanting to practice every day to get good at something, or wanting to be one of the best players. I had a bit of a laugh at this guy, not because he wanted to be one of the best or even because he didn't have a back up plan, but because every time he said he failed at something else he would give up immediately whereas he was insisting he would and could stick to it for fighting games. I do not think this guy is dumb or anything, literally the only thing I think about him is that he doesn't or can't understand the gravity of the undertaking, which is why I was interested in this thread: this is a very large portion of the people I interact with as a tutorial maker and my sincere goal is to make it an easier undertaking for them. These people are common at bottom level but almost vanished by low level, and I need to see where most of them give up and address THAT in a video, but I feel like THAT isn't game advice but rather lifestyle advice on how to handle losing long enough to get good.

    I'm glad I didn't end up thinking like this. 5 years ago I was 13 but now I'm 18 and I only play fighting games for fun (played them my whole life). I obviously always still strive to improve and get good at all the different fighting games I play but like it's for fun. Never at 17 would I think "Y'know what I'mma be a pro fg player no matter what it takes! Even if I end up a bum!" cause I know fighting games AREN'T a reliable income source and they never really have been unless you're (like ppl pointed out in the thread) like Diago Umehara or (using a newer example) MenaRD or even Idom winning 6 digits from Capcom Cup.

    • @faeylis
      @faeylis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      6 digits isnt worth the years taken away. Fighting game is not transferable in the real world. sure mena won 250k but will that last the next 20 years? unlikely. There are alot of manchildren in the fgc, so one has to be careful not to get sucked into this fgc highschool bubble and be 35 with no skill other than really good at fighting games.

  • @SSP50505
    @SSP50505 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Though the FGC kind of lacks audience streaming-wise, it's not uncommon to see people paying their bills with money they earn from playing. I know it's not the same thing this guy wants, but it's not like it's impossible to earn a living out of gaming.

    This is an important discussion because there are alot of "manchildren" in the fgc. Playing to get good is fine but becoming so obsessed with the fgc can be frankly disastrous.

    The funny thing is, you frequently see the classic mentality of the classic brainwashed human in places like the now defunct SRK. The first thing 80% of those people on the forums want to do is tell someone how something is not possible, when in reality, anything is possible if you put in the energy, and time.
    A few people (only after a shift in energy) gave him positive motivation, while most of the others tried to tear him down with smug and condescending remarks. Their logic is: they themselves aren't good or dedicated enough to get there, therefore, it's unlikely that anyone else can get there. Sad.

    Okay i have a crackpot overanalysis of the mind of some kid in a 7 year old video about a fighting game forum thread:
    I wonder if he's trans. Like I dunno there is another comment on this video talking about depression being a root cause of his flighty behavior. I mean what is practically the main symptom of gender dysphoria? Depression.
    I only say this because the guy brings up the fact that he doesn't like playing male characters almost unprompted. He also represents himself as a woman in the forums. Obviously these things taken in a vacuum don't come anywhere near to pointing to someone being trans. Just taking this snapshot of his life as a whole it shows a pattern to me.
    Anyway I'm not getting the time I just wasted writing this comment back so thats cool.

    it's easy enough to poke fun at this, but the person is a teenager. At this point it's like, "ha ha ha lol look at the stupid teenager saying silly things because they are a teenager!"
    I mean, especially if many of the people laughing at this kid are adults, which I suspect is the case. So, does that make you feel like a man? An adult laughing at a teenager saying dumb things?

      As I said in other comments, the thing I find especially interesting about this random guy is how relatable he is, and how frequently people exactly like this pop up in the fgc in general. I spend a ridiculous amount of free time making tutorial videos so I try to keep my ear to the ground on what beginners need help with, which is how I found this guy in the first place. You're right that I'm having a laugh at this guy but genuinely speaking, I think one of the single most important things tutorials need to address is having a healthy mentality for learning, which might include setting up realistic expectations or having no mental restrictions that prevent you from learning and branching out (e. g. I only play female characters). This guy is some anonymous who-cares so I'm obviously not trying to target anyone but I am enjoying how he perfectly presents some prevalent ideas in the community almost to the level of parody.
