We had a Glaswegian colleague working in our (American) office for a year, and no one could understand him, so then another colleague from London would sort of translate the important bits as needed. By the end of the year, we could understand Glasgow guy just fine. Took the better part of the year, though. Then once we could understand him, we were a little sorry because every other word was “fukin.” His vocabulary was a little “colorful” by American workplace standards. Things seemed pretty dull when he left to go back to Glasgow. 😂😂

He's right. The Scottish accent makes my mind go dead after a few minutes. I could understand my mean grandmother (Opps, I mean my Scottish grandmother). But after 30 minutes trying to understand my cousin Jim and wife Margaret, on a trip to Edinburgh with my dad, my dad had to translate for me. Was at a cafe for breakfast there and the 20-year-old waiter said something to me I didn't understand, I said, "excuse me"? Twice and he repeated something a 3rd time. I finally said, I'm not going to be able to understand you, but everything is fine. Waiter said, " Would...You...Like...Anything...Else.

As American I had a hard time deciphering some of what he was saying with his accent, but I appreciate it & salute the people that keep their culture & humor of their culture & region! That’s what’s beautiful about people! We are not one homogenous thing, we are WHO we are as our land , our cultures, our history has formed us , but as a whole we are ONE, hopefully not letting our differences divide us ( as politicians seem to want to Do!. Lol) People are more alike & hold the same values ,humor, laugh @ the same things, ( except for some things that only people local to the culture would “ get” ) than they are apart! I’ve traveled a lot & experienced many cultures, languages, there are good people wherever you go all around this world! There’s also a lot of “ shit’s”, people that know you’re not local & try to take advantage. Arseholes! But you’ll have the “ opportunist” everywhere you go, lol. & then you’ll have the “ good uns’” The local people that will be fair & honest , not part of the “ tour industry” that you can sit in a pub with, have a dram or a pint wit, & laern, about each other. That’s the best! I’m a Ferguson btw, but only by injection ( marriage, or ejaculation, so my children are Ferguson’s ) My hubby’s Grandad & several of his brothers immigrated to America. I LOVE cultures KEEPING their culture , accents, & history , not letting politics, corporates, big $$ , international investment entities & powers trying to make us one little homogenous soup that they can sup off of! I love ❤️ your humor, ( even though I missed a bit of it because I ‘m at a loss culturally, but a lot of it I “ got”!). You make people laugh! That’s good medicine & healthy! Positive & uplifting for the soul, no matter what one person in that crowd might have been going thru in their personal life @ the time, you gave them a reprieve for a bit, collectively, because they could all relate & laugh together, …& an injection into their soul of laughter & release of stress & worry! Good on you mon! You’re more a healer of humanity than you know! Keep up the good work! You’re a DR. Of humanity, no pharmaceutical prescriptions required to feel good!

@@beebee9803i think 'Scotch' might be an older term. Im from Norn Irland and granda was from lowland Scots background, born 1890. He spoke with a dcottish accent and referred to 'Scotch' folk. Or maybe it is an Ulster Scots term. I'd love to know.
