    Thank you. I have been looking for a recipe that matches the one I used to make with my mum when I was little. The recipe was lost when she died. We also had the tradition of everyone in house having a stir (3 times round the bowl) and make a wish. This is the closest recipe to what I remember. Thank you so much!

      It's such a shame your mum's recipe was lost! This recipe was given to me by a lady I worked with when I was first married. It's so good and although I've tweaked it over the years it's still essentially the same recipe. I've released it into the wild now so it can go onwards 😊

    This sounds so delicious and looks scrumptious Marion. 😊❤ Nothing like the nightmare fruitcakes of my childhood, that arrived under the tree at our house every year, in their rounded tins. My mother used them as doorstops to prop the front door open. She didn't make them or like them. They were made by some relative I can't recall. Every year we cringed at yet another fruitcake arrival, and prayed we didn't have to eat it. Mom loved the tins and used them for notions storage. After the first one, she gave up trying to get us to eat it, and so our chickens ate it instead. You have just abolished a childhood nightmare and replaced it with delight! Thank you! 😅 😊 ❤

    Dearest Marion😊,l do love how you say" it's a very forgiving recipe "!Reminds me of my grandmamas recipe! I do a "batch" around sept and put the dried fruit in the alcohol overnight to steep.Make the family ones and a set of smaller ones(for the oldies/ singletons- still use the charms wrapped in greaseproof paper- with the appropriate warnings!) People give me " gentle hints"😊😅 for them,lol! I decorate the smaller ones with glace fruit and nuts,(less complicated). Keep saying that it'll be the last lot l'll do but have done them again this year.Amazing how many people show up as they come out of the oven! Made some little recipe books to go with this time so they can all do for themselves when I can't any more! Thankyou for sharing yours today,best wishes to all,J.I.M.K. Mrs, (D's Mother). Mum , always made the cake and she used to soak the fruit over night, and I do believe she would feed it too. When my Dad retired he picked her up from work and said he had done something and she might be cross, those ingredients could be quite a lot to pay out, he had made the Christmas cake 🤗 she said it was the best Christmas cake she had ever eaten 😊 so anyone including me, that has never made one, should have a go 🥮 I rember santa and the reindeer were always ontop with a little snowman too. ⛄️

      Yes, years ago when I was first married it seemed quite expensive to buy all the dried fruit. Plus having the alcohol too made it a definite luxury. My Mam used to put a Santa halfway down the chimney on hers. Plus some fir trees too.

    I’ve not made a Christmas cake for 4 years, since I moved to Italy, however, when I went home recently , I stocked up on things I can’t get here….treacle, golden syrup, proper mixed fruit and plump glacé cherries. It’s been in the oven now for the first hour and a half and the smell is gorgeous. I used an orange and a lemon straight from the tree, and added a pinch of salt. Can’t wait to see it when it comes out. Just wish I’d bought marzipan …..

The fruit cake I made for his birthday in the summer is now being slowly left out for the birds. Marion…your joyous cake recipe has just gone into the oven to cook. It’s taken me 3 days to get there because I need to pace my activities to short periods “Pacing Myself” then it doesn’t increase my pain levels too much. Just tasted the bowl scrapings with my husband “what a wonderful depth of flavour” was his comment! Happy Days. Thank you for sharing your recipe. I added up all the fruit and divided to different fruits as well. Crystalline Papaya, pineapple, figs, plums, dates, peaches, pears & different coloured cherries. So a real mix of fruit. I think it should be a great cake. Thank you so much. Your advent videos have been great too. Enjoy your trip to France with Naomi & partner. More than welcome. In Baking I always add fruits together of whatever fruits I have & divide up. Always wash all the sugar off in hot water & dry off (stops it sinking). I grew up in Africa & so always enjoy a different mix of fruit! Anything goes well. Give it a try. I get supplies ordered from a catering company too - more choice & beats supermarket hands down. “Bon Voyage Marion” for your trip.

    I like making fruit cake each year, usually with apple juice rather than alcohol, but I like ALL the fruits in your recipe and am excited to give it a try ❤
    What is the reason for making the Christmas cake so far before the holiday? Is it for more time for flavors to blend? I'm interested to know.
    Thank you for sharing this lovely recipe with us ❤❤❤

    I am so glad I found your channel, Marion. I love watching you make anything. Being in the US our fruitcake is really nothing like this and I can't stand it. But, I love dried fruit. It's the dried peels I just can't do. I'm thinking I could actually do this with the other fruits and throw in chopped dates as well and just leave out the peel. My husband loves fruit cake and I might try to surprise him. I'm 60 and never made one. You make it look possible and give me the courage to try! 🥰

    • @marionsworld24
      @marionsworld24  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Absolutely.. just substitute the weight of peel with any other dried or candied fruit you like. Pineapple works well too, also apricots, prunes... anything really. Dates will bring good moisture and 'toffiness'

      I think I've got an old Canadian recipe where the fruit was quite big. It got steamed first like a pudding and then spends ages in the oven as well! I'll have to look that out as I haven't made that one for a while...

      @marionsworld24 the one I made requires soaking the fruit in the booze for a week before making the cake, I have the recipe written out in my kitchen notebook because (of course) I have tweaked it over the years. I can't remember if it was called a Creole Christmas cake though that rings a bell. Anyway I am definitely making yours this year, though the kids aren't keen on it so I will be eating it into Spring probably 😂 with a piece of Wensleydale on the side, is that a thing in the North East too? Southerners think I am weird. 😁❤️

    The alcohol reminds me of the time my mother in-law made chocolate rumballs for Christmas one year. Midway she got distracted by the kids playing in the other room. When she went back to mixing them she forgot she had already added the rum and added more. One bite of her rumballs would take your breath away. No one wanted to eat them, so for years they lived in my freezer. Every once in a while I would take one out and eat it, for a treat, they never lost their zing. 😂
