  • For this series I’ll be taking you with me through NYC & New Jersey to various Music Stores. Sifting through CD’s, vinyl, and whatever else the stores have to offer. Then at the end I’ll un-bag the loot and discuss why I chose the ones I did. Come on…let’s go to the record store!

    Great people there.
    If you want something and can’t find it they will order it.
    They really value their customers and they know you on a first name basis

    On Jeff Beck: you mentioned you have Beck-Ola and Truth but rather than his instrumental work you prefer his song-based material. if you don’t know it/have it already, I would recommend the Beck, Bogert and Appice album if you can find it.

    I haven’t seen CDs in those types of security cases for many years. I think Virgin Megastore used to have those in the UK. Maybe some HMV stores displayed CDs that way but not all...I think it was Virgin who did. Reckless Records in London display the CD sleeves in wallets and when you buy, you collect the CD and the jewel case at the counter.

    Brendon- I love your “Let’s Go To The Record Store” series. As soon as I saw this episode, I took a trip from upstate NY to Music Connection.
    Unfortunately, I had a terrible experience there. I found about 15 vinyl albums and about 7 cd’s.
    The vinyl had no prices, while some of the cd’s were priced and a few were not.
    I asked the salesman for prices when I got to the counter. He began to use his laptop to give me prices that he seemed to make up on the spot. I do not know what he was using to arrive at his prices.
    He said Mama’s Boys - ‘Plug It In’ vinyl was $30 (median price $11.99 on Discogs). Other prices he threw out were $15 for Loverboy s/t vinyl (median $3.84 on Discogs) and Twisted Sister - Come Out and Play (pop up front cover) vinyl was $20 (median on Discogs $10.53). I told him not to bother pricing the other vinyl, as the prices were too much for me, and I didn’t want to waste his time.
    When I said that, he asked me to tell him what I wanted to pay for the Mamas Boys vinyl and I said I’d want to refer to Discogs, to which he said I should just tell him my price. I never did because I had a bad taste in my mouth, knowing that this was completely out of the norm. This was not an eBay Auction and especially since his quoted prices were mostly higher than the highest paid Discogs price.
    I said I would just take the cd’s but then he said the price stickers on the cd’s were “not theirs” and asked if I’d pay $17 for a cd with a price sticker that was $4.99.
    The store should be featured on Hoarders, as you can only access a small portion of the merchandise. These are typically my favorite types of music stores but Music Connection really is the extreme. Stacks of cd’s are piled 4 feet high so you can’t pull out something in the middle. There are boxes under cd shelves too, which the guy told me and my son to “keep in the same order” because they were “cataloged”. So… he basically was discouraging us from looking or buying those (!?!?!?) There is also a large, separate back room filled almost floor to ceiling with items that you are not allowed in.
    I did end up buying one vinyl (overpriced too and one cd - price was fine) but in hindsight, I should have just walked out because the salesman at Music Connection was clearly trying to rip me off. I told the salesman that the items should be priced. His response - “it’s not possible.”
    I have over 6000 cds, cassettes and vinyl albums. I have been buying vinyl, cassettes and cd’s since the late 80s at hundreds of different physical stores in various states and countries and online as well. I have never had an experience like this. No prices on merchandise (that are exorbitantly priced when you get to the counter) or prices on merchandise that are ignored and jacked up when you show interest.
    My advice - do NOT shop at Music Connection in Elmwood Park, NJ unless you want to get taken advantage of.

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IDK, all the CDs that had prices on them were the ones I paid. Yes there were some from boxes that were considered their rare items and they informed me that those were ones they needed to price meaning look them up online. In both cases they gave me an online price and asked what I wanted to pay. In one case they accepted my offer and the other was too low for which they countered and I said I wasn’t interested. But in all music stores like this you can haggle the price. This is not uncommon. There are far more benefits to the store to outweigh any negatives such as what you describe. There are always going to be albums priced higher than what you want to spend. That’s just the nature of business. In those cases just go home and order of Discogs if you want. But the benefit of seeing it and walking out with it from the store is what I like and I’m willing to pay a little more if I have to for it when it’s in front of me.

    It's nice to see you settling into your new home, and finding new places to explore. My Ford Escape has a good sound system, and I do a great deal of my music listening in there. Some newer vehicles don't come with a CD player, but mine is a 2011, so it's OK. You can buy Walkmans now with a USB output, so the newer vehicles can accept a CD player, albeit something you have to do yourself. I'm a big Jeff Beck fan. One of the greatest guitar players of all time. Must owns are Blow By Blow, Wired, and Guitar Shop. Also see if you can find the DVD of him playing live at Ronnie Scott's in London, with Tal Wilkenfeld on bass. It's an awesome concert.

    You don't see that Joshua Surrender LP at the 5:16 mark in the wild often. I would of picked that up. Great melodic Hard Rock. I have that on CD and vinyl. Three of those members Ken Tamplin (guitar, vocals), Joe Galletta (drums) and Loren Robinson (bass) left the band after that album and formed the band Shout under the leadership of Ken Tamplin, another excellent band.

    • @BrendonSnyder

      I already own the album so that’s why I didn’t pick it up. But I bought it for the lead singer Jeff Fenholt who briefly sang for Black Sabbath and I wanted to hear his voice. I also have Shout in my collection.

    • @soldier7778
      @soldier7778 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Jeff Fenholt was in Black Sabbath shortly before his conversion to Christianity. Joshua released a few albums over the years: The Hand is Quicker Then the Eye (1982), Surrender (1985), Intense Defense (1988), Surrender (parts rerecorded with a new rack added 1992) Chapter One (1995), Something to Say (2001), Resurrection (2012), I spoke to Joshua Perahia a few times on line and he sent me a few rare band collectables. Jeff Fenholt went on to become an evangelist. Intense Defense was produced by Dieter Dierks for the RCA label at the same time he produced albums by Accept and Scorpions. When Dieter found out that Joshua was a Christian band he didn't give the album a proper production and mixing. The label shelved the album (didn't promote event though it sold all copies produced and went out of print). Joshua rerecorded parts of Intense Defense and rereleased it a couple of years ago.

    • @soldier7778
      @soldier7778 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BrendonSnyder Rob Rock sang on Intense Defense. He was originally in the band Impellitteri and sang on the black EP. When Chris Impellitteri signed with Relativity Records, Rob couldn't sing on Stand In Line as he committed to Intense Defense. That was why Graham Bonnet sang on the album. Rob rejoined the band around 1991 and became the main singer for Impellitteri on most of the albums.

    So when you go to these record stores, you have to keep in your head what CDs you have and which ones you don’t. Not sure if you carry a database on your phone when you’re out. I eventually had to do that because I caught myself buying duplicates so I had to set up a database at home to list everything I have and then I can put it on my phone and take it out with me if I go to a record store which in Southern California they’re almost nonexistent.

    Would you ever go back to Book off and the other stores in New York ?

    Just wondering, how do you know what's in your arsenal when you go shopping, you don't want to buy doubles of things????

      I keep it all in my head. I’ve only duplicated a few times. But it was things where one had a different album cover or name and didn’t realize it was the same as one I already owned.

    Hey Brendon, found your channel and trying to catch up on your shows, really great. Wanted to ask you, do you know of any good cd storage cabinets that are affordable and are not just shelves? I'm seeing thats hard to find. Found one in Toronto but very expensive and almost as expensive to have shipped.

      Hi Jeff! No I never found any good ones myself so I’m having some custom ones built instead.

      @@BrendonSnyder I think the ones I saw, based in Toronto, that were very nice was by a company called Can Am. Pricey.

    Now that you have a house, are you gonna upgrade to a bigger louder stereo system?

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope….part of the reason I moved is for peace and quiet. Also I’m not someone who listens to music very loud. I quite like my system I’ve got and it still fits the size of my new space.

      @@BrendonSnyder Their early stuff from 2000 to 2012 was the 80's Traditional Pop-Metal but after they got producer songwriter Johnny Andrews on their 7th cd "Judas" close to more generic radio version Traditional Pop-Metal of the 2000's.

    They have a lot of CDs, but they're a little bit too pricey. The albums especially. $35 for a Quiet Riot "Alive & Well" LP...
    That's highway robbery...I'm sorry. Record vinyl shouldn't be that high, period. CDs shouldn't cost $16 anymore...
    You can find them online for way cheaper, especially the ones you were showing.
    No wonder record stores close down.
