It's always nice to hear Jello talk about something other then politics, it's actually rare for him. And he was spot on about people who live in one era of music. Great video of Jello!
I agree not a fan of his political rants, but this was really cool! He should do a podcast series on his collection, kind of a continuation of this video, he could have unlimited content with all that vinyl.
Leigh Foulkes I’m not telling you what to listen to or like, but seriously, there are a FUCK TON of great bands making music post-2000, whether they started in the 20th century, like Jello, or didn’t start putting music out till the 21st century, there are a ton of bands making great music today. In fact, I’d say that 2019 was probably my favorite year of the decade, rivaled maybe only by 2011, for discovering great bands and albums. The trick is 99% of these bands are underground, and/or basically the type of thing you have to be lucky enough to stumble upon, and that’s only going to happen if you’re looking for them! Seriously though, it’s easier for people to put out an album now than at any time in history, and that absolutely leads to a market and/or various scenes saturated with ABSOLUTE SHIT, but it also means a ton of really talented people are getting their music out, especially via platforms like bandcamp, etc, who couldn’t have gotten it out pre-internet takeover, and “destruction” of the industry. Also, via streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music (what I use) people have easier, cheaper access to that music, though I still think we should be buying the records we love, not only for better quality, but to support the artist. To be sure, I think that’s all a serious double edged swords, with lots of drawbacks, like any technological changes tend to be, but one of the great positives is there’s so much great music getting out out right now, to the point I actually have despaired the last couple years bc it’s just not possible to listen to all of it.
hydorah Dude, keep exploring Hawkwind! They have a bunch of albums worth checking out, a few of which are 70s essentials imo. Also, if you’ve not checked them out, basically every band Don just mentioned have at least one essential album (or several, like Can). ✌️
im with ya. im 58 and i have ±300 LPs currently. i had many more than that, but then i had 4 kids. i have the ones of those they didn't want. Rebuilding is expensive or slow, but either way, vinyl shopping is a day well spent...that and checking out used guitars and gear.
I like that he was honest enough (near the end) to say that you don't need to go digging through vinyl these days to get the same rare listening experiences he's been chasing since he was a kid. A lot of record collectors are bullshitters, but Jello isn't
Totally agree. I went on TH-cam looking for Iranian psychedelic rock, and I found exactly what i was looking for, and more. There is no better age then now for music exploration.
I'm gonna bet he doesn't like the Smiths cause on one of his spoken word albums he's talking about homophobic music censorship and he says "I'd even rather people listen to *Morrissey* than this Christian homophobia"
"Wanna have something to hold on to..." Exactly. The thing about digital music is that there are no liner notes or interesting art. It's so heartwarming that vinyl has prevailed through all of the audio changes. And his comment about being stuck? Yes. Though my preference may be late 70s punk and early 90s, there is always great music of any style in any era if you take the time to look and listen. Keeping your head out of your ass/era compels positive mental growth.
At the end of the video, we can see a MAGMA's LP. MAGMA is a french band. They started in 1969. Still touring in 2020. Tanks for posting this. I love Dead Kennedys . Phil from France

A vinyl addiction. WOW this man has lived clean and great to this day. Very clever man and some of my favourite rock music even now. This video was a greta insight into a very humble mans life.....Reminds me of Lemmy in many respects.

Vinyl addiction is a serious thing. Can't wait to get a super good system so I don't have to use Bluetooth all the time. And I don't like jello but I love jello Biafra. You can tell that he's extremely proud of his music, and he should be.
Great stuff here, love to see Jello's enthusiasm and his collection and knowledge are impressive. I have that Sun-Ra Batman album in my collection... passed down from my uncle... its scratchy but that adds to the charm
The two books on Jello's bed are ""Incredibly Strange Music," Vol. I and II respectively, from Re/Search publications. In Volume 1, Jello is interviewed about a lot of these records and more. Volume II has a great Cramps interview on their favs. Both worth checking out if you're a vinyl junkie.
Viva La Biafra! Along with Iggy, Lou & The Cramps, he's one of America's TRUE R 'n' R treasures! I myself & I got into "thrift store music" (we call them "Opportunity Shoppes" here in Enzed) thanx to growing increasingly bored with what was passing for pop & rock music circa 1990 (generally considered one of THE worst years, despite the beginning of 'Madchester', but I digress...), including having my eyes opened to all this crazy-arse "lost" music from the '50s & '60s thanx to the brillo 'Born Bad' series of albums featuring 'Music The Cramps Taught Us'. Also, both book volumes of ReSearch Magazine's 'Incredibly Strange Music' became my unholy bibles, though I thought back in the '90s that I'd NEVER get to axually HEAR Little Marcy, Heino, Mrs Miller, et al. But then along came this wee thing called 'The Internet', & I discovered Audiogalaxy - one of the better file-sharing sites that sprang up after the RIAA stupidly killed Napster, and joy of joys, a musician (whose name I forget) had started an 'Incredibly Strange Music' GROUP there - HOORAY! A year or 2 later, I also moved up the coast from sWellington to Paraparaumu, and discovered a giant 2-storey second-hand warehouse who had more regular dumpings of oddball vinyl at $1 a pop than you could shake a Shaggs album at! Anyway, to cut a boring story long, collecting "unusual" music was pretty damn easy (and stress-free!) for me, as most vinyl collectors I'd see flicking through the musty boxes at Sallie Army stores disdained such LPs as 'Tony (Bennett) Plays the Hit Songs of Today', or kids' music 45s & albums - MORONS! Lmao!
Every time the dead Kennedys played a show in St. Louis Missouri it made our lives the kids from the local scene just that much better could’ve been for a few days a week the entire month a couple of months who knows and it’s great to keep following you ,Jello- until today and onward .

i own that tumor circus single and i love the idea behind it! bought it used and i like how the limited edition label was picked at in the corner as if the disappointed original owner was trying to look behind it, or maybe clean up the picture sleeve, but finally realizing the joke was on him, he gave up and obviously parted with it!
Wow, had to look up azuma kabuki musicians after Jello mentioned it..totally trance inducing stuff. Might try jamming with my jaw harp next time I listen...
In the early 70s a friend had a room mate that had some records we weren't familiar with. I can remember only three...Silver head , Captain Beyond and Hawkwind. I went through the same thing with CDs in the 90s, to a lesser extent. I'd go to a particular used store and scour all their titles. If I wanted to listen to something, they'd put it on for me.
