- Tom Brady is widely considered the greatest QB in NFL history. On the surface, it seems like a pretty clear cut case considering Brady's stats and rings. However, there is a substantial amount of evidence that supports MY belief that Brady's success is largely a result of being in the best possible situation rather than his own abilities. This video won't change the minds of Brady's diehard fans, but that's not what I set out to do. The day this clown retires from the NFL will be one of the happiest days of my life.

One thing I keep finding missing from his analysis of QBs, is that I haven't heard a single word about Offensive Linemen yet, but I've only seen a handful of his QB breakdown videos, so maybe the massively important protection up front just didn't make the cut. Which is weird because in this Brady is Overrated video mentioning O-Lines would be massive considering Brady is the only QB in history with a decent number of years under his belt that has never once had anything but a top 10 pass blocking O-Line, while many many other QBs can't even get 1 top 10 pass blocking O-Line their entire career.
Anyone just something that was bugging me while going through these breakdowns. If you are breaking down QB skills (as he does) should probably mention something like the type of protection they had up front, the time in the pocket they had, and their time to release for both their throwing mechanics specifically as well as their entire time from hiking the ball to throwing it or being pushed out of the pocket. But hey, that's just me I guess. Figured a QB no matter how smart they are or how good they are at reading a defense after the ball is snapped, doesn't matter really if their O-Line is such shit they don't have time for the plays to develop at all.
Brady has never once had an O-Line worse than top 10 (again no other decent QB in history has had this good of protection his entire career). Pretty sure Brady couldn't dink and dunk all day if he didn't have the time int he pocket to do so.
Just look at Mat Stafford, never had protection as a Lion (never won shit, but built stats), meanwhile he goes to the Rams and boom 7-1 to start. You think protection had a big role in this?... I know I do.
This is an excellent point. One of the ways he's been great is when his line upfront breaks down and adds pressure that he's not use to he tends to make bad decisions. He also hasn't been beat up the way other qbs have due to the usually great play of his offensive linemen.

@Fries Tom Brady is the only QB in history to have 10+ seasons as a starting QB and yet not a single season thusfar has he had anything other than top 10 pass blocking O-Lines, literally not a single other QB in history can claim that.
Not saying Brady isn't a damn good QB, but he gets way too much credit for team stats.
Not to mention when you look at all the SB winning teams, 90+% of them have top 10 pass blocking O-Lines. Don't you think this might have a lot to do with the overall winning success of a QB (basically a team stat)? Even looking just at the teams that win games in the playoffs season to season, 75% or more of them have top 10 pass protection O-Lines, so again, they mean a world of a difference for a QB's success.
It doesn't matter how great your WRs/TEs/RBs are at running routes and catching the ball, if the QB doesn't have time to allow their routes to develop in order to get the ball out. When a QB has 1-2 players getting in untouched on even just 20% of drop backs, even Brady almost never had a good game with this shitty protection, meanwhile you have players like Rivers who throughout his entire career was never protected (until his last season when he went to Colts). Hell, most of his career that percentage of defenders getting in untouched happened well more than 20% and even towards the 50% rate in many games. Just an example.
Field position means you have the better defenses usually. Brady also had the best kickers consistently and best offensive lines probably among all the other QBs of his era as well. Vinateri should be in the HOF. His clutch kicks are unreal as he was a huge part of the 2006 Colts winning the SB too.

these were all valid points. the one thing I wanna say tho is that the NJ Devils won three cups in about 9 years because they played a zone trap scheme (which is a the most boring and drawn out way to play hockey). To me it doesn't really matter how Brady throws the ball, but rather he puts it where it needs to go. It gets the team results.

Skill still matters more even though luck plays a part. It's just that the longer Brady plays, the more weird the "luck" argument becomes. Essentially saying the past 20 years of NFL history has been highly determined by luck. And that no matter which team Brady plays for or who his head coach is, Brady must be lucky. Brady having good players on his team and on the defense must be "luck" rather than creating an attractive free agent destination for players to take less money to play with Brady. Also, anybody can attribute "luck" to any result. Brees and Peyton have retired while Brady is still playing, I suppose that is luck too.

Just because a competitor makes an inferior decision that you have never made doesn't make you lucky, but rather is a data point suggesting superiority in that sport or activity. Belichick is an amazing coach and possibly the best of all time but to be fair his record without Brady is 62-74. I agree everyone is lucky to a certain extent but for that to be the main point or even a sizably influential point to describe someone's 21 year career is absurd. My issue is he already had a predetermined conclusion and so cherry picked data needed to support his predetermined conclusion. I want to see a correlation analysis between wins and some of the metrics he finds important such as starting field position. Either way, you did not address my point as to why Brady is still "good" enough to play in the league at 44 whereas Brees and both Mannings have since retired.

To be fair Brady and Mac are pretty similar qbs in style of play, I love Brady, but they do have similar arm talent. I believe Brady is slightly more accurate, but what makes him the goat isn’t just talent or accomplishment it’s doing more with less offensively. It’s being extremely consistent and being able to swallow his pride to take what’s given instead of playing Superman and trying to throw high risk balls.

More often than not the special team comes is because the offense (led by the QB) was not able to score a TD. This reflects exactly how Brady fans give undue credit to Brady. Being the greatest and being the best isn't the same. Brady wasn't the most incredible and skilled athlete to ever play quarterback, but he is the most accomplished and most successful. He did what he needed to do to win, and he won over and over again. 7 super bowls don't come by accident or dumb luck, the man was great and his accomplishments speak for themselves.

Forget the fact that any championship-level quarterback, from Bradshaw, to Griese, to Montana, to Elway to Brady, all need a capable supporting cast. That isn't news. Unlike Montana, Griese, and Bradshaw, who had a set team based on no free agency (2 Hall of Fame WRs, a HOF running back, a very strong offensive line and the Steel Curtain defense), the faces in New England were ever-changing. Winning in an era of salary cap and free agency was much more difficult. He was a "system" QB? Winning in Tampa, which he did after this video was made, solidified his place on top. No matter what a contrarian eager for likes which means advertising money says.

He swapped Randy Moss and Wes Welker for Gronk and Edelman, but while Edelman wasn’t on the same level as Welker, he is still a great receiver. Gronk as well. It’s surprising how when he lost Gronk he lost in the wildcard. Only coming back when he had Gronk, Evans, and Brown. Also, if you can’t win a Super Bowl with Welker and Moss despite having them from 3 seasons then it’s going to be hard talking of you as the G.O.A.T.

Because Tom Brady also plays offensive line, place kicker, and every position on defense... He also moonlights as a referee to make sure his fumbles get called back. He deserves every ounce of credit for all of those wins, because no one else on his teams did absolutely anything to help him win his rings.

You have to adjust for “inflation” with QB stats. 11/3 in the early 2000s isn’t that much different from 18/2 a decade later.
If you replace 'the best' with 'the most successful,' this conversation about Tom Brady becomes much clearer - based on his record (i.e., playoff appearances and wins, Super Bowl appearances and wins), Brady is one of the most successful players of any professional sport.
Yes, football is a team sport, and teams win games and championships. Football is also a physically demanding sport - and few players have lasted as long as Brady. This includes being able to perform at your position at a high enough level to be retained (quarterbacks who perform badly tend to get replaced).
Your dislike of Brady clearly colors your analysis. However, sometimes you have to set aside personal bias to conduct a meaningful discussion.

What Tom Brady does better than other quarterbacks? He shows that having a brain, reading defenses, and being an accurate passer is more important than physical ability. He's the answer to every armchair GM who talks about some 6'5" jamork who can run like a gazelle and with a cannon for an arm, who then proves to be a complete bust, or at best, a one season wonder before some linebacker telescopes his spine, and he starts bouncing around the league as every suck team in the league tries to "bring back" something that was never there.
Brady is proof that work ethic and brains will win out against raw talent and flashy antics every fucking time. Is he boring? I guess, if you think winning is boring. Look, I agree that Brady is overrated, it is a team sport, and since you don't have playoff series, you have playoff matches, it's the most luck-driven team sport you could possibly get. But I've seen far too many terrible quarterbacks squander their talent, to think that Brady's non-physical attributes aren't important to the success of his team.

Barry is right, Brady is incredibly overrated, but I have problems with some of the reasons he uses. Being "boring" is not relevant to the job of winning football games. You know who was really exciting? Brett Favre. He was also kinda dumb, and the older he got, the the worse he got because he stopped doing what his coaches told him to do, and just forced things, which resulted in early playoff exits every year of his career after '97.
Yes, Brady benefitted from being the most competently managed and coached team in football. And no, his stint at Tampa doesn't erase that, he basically installed himself at a team with great talent which lacked the one thing he could provide: A competent passer who wouldn't throw the ball away. But if your QB can win games by chunking and dunking 5 yard screen passes all day, you should be glad, you're winning games.

There’s definitely some decent points but looking at the 2007 Patriots team they had one of the toughest strength of schedules coming into the year and in 2008 one of the weakest. So bringing up that the patriots still succeeded without Tom Brady is kind of a bad point because they lost 5 more games against on average worse teams.

The problem I have with Brady is if another QB like Matt Ryan for example or Philip Rivers throw 5 TD's in a game they get no credit, but if Brady throws 3 TD passes and 1 INT he gets all the credit in the world and everyone says "that's why he is the GOAT. Brady gets way too much Credit and I don't think he would last in Joe Montana's era. It's sad Because Mahomes is another QB that's gonna steal all the credit away from other QB's.

I get sick and tired of fans, coaches, media, and whoever else place so much emphasis on the QB. Look at the top 10 offenses of all-time yardage wise (2011 Saints, 2013 Broncos, 2000 Rams, 1984 Dolphins, 2019 Cowboys, 2011 Patriots, 2012 Patriots, 2016 Saints, 2018 Chiefs, 1998 49ers)! They all had dominant QB play, but were beaten by another teams defense & not as dominant offense. More top defenses have won super bowls than dominant defenses. So, yes, the QB position as a whole is overrated TO A POINT! There are 53 players for a reason!!!

It’s overrated but still the most important. Safeties should get way more respect but a good QB with solid receivers can control the entire offense. A good defense needs everyone hitting in all cylinders.

When defenses only have to worry about the pass, its easier for them. Also, having a good run game makes playing defense unbelievably harder. Linebackers dont know whether to move forward or back. The run game is the backbone of good offense. Sure, theres rules that have made passing offense easier, but once you get to the tough defenses, those rules matter less. Football is, and always will be, won by the big boys up front. Goes unnoticed by many but its the truth.
I'm not a Brady fan, but you can't underestimate the fact that he got the job done 7 times. Leadership skills and confidence from your team members can not be measured. He still had to get by great defenses and when the games were close, and the pressure was on, he delivered when he had to. So many great QB's have been in those pressure situations and just didn't deliver. Just like Montana, and the legend of his game winning Superbowl drive when he pointed out John Candy on the sideline to Harris Barton to calm him down, the leadership in the critical moments can not be measured by any stats. The only way to truly measure it is by finishing the job and then seeing how many others have done the same. So many people get put into good situations and still fail for so many of their own shortcomings before any game factors ever come into play.
If your teammates have any shadow of a doubt about the quarterback, they are going to press in pressure situations and oftentimes fail no matter which side of the ball they play on. That's how competition works. You relax, you succeed more often. It's not luck. You get in the zone and you finish the job. In every sport there are a limited number of players that have mastered the psychological aspect of competing and winning. Brady did that better than almost anyone in any sport. Tiger Woods did it. Montana did it. It goes without saying that Jordan did it. Part of it is just building that mystique too, and that alone makes your competition falter just a little bit. They don't sleep the night before they have to face you.
Overrated? Hardly. I wish it wasn't him and his team that was so good, but the guy has raised the bar for every other qb ever coming into the league.
My favorite part of the game is when a quarterback can slice through defenses with just their arm. Manning was sick to watch, so the runny quarterback style right now is terrible to watch imo

Brady has benefited from the Patriots playing at a high level in the playoffs, usually holding their opponents below 24 points and having a better turnover margin compared to Manning's old Indy teams and his time in Denver and especially true vs the Saints and Packers (GB's defenses have routinely shit the bed in the playoffs all through Rodger's career). Brady has had some very good defenses throughout his career. That’s a fact. He also had a horrific one in 2011, yet he led that team to the super bowl somehow. He’s also had a lot of no-name receivers outside of the brief period when Moss was there. I couldn’t name any of the receivers he was working with for much of the 2010s (admittedly being a fan of a different team) aside from Amendola and Edelman. And talent and measurement wise, those two are nothing special but they had a deep rapport with Brady.
It might be fair to call Brady overrated if you’re going by the comments of his most ardent supporters, and we can certainly debate whether there can even be a Greatest of All Time in any sport, let alone the NFL. But I think calling Brady the most overrated in history is...well, a stretch.

2011 defense was why they went to the super bowl. You called them horrible but they carried patriots in the playoffs. Brady was horrible in the afc championship, 0 tds, 2 pics, plus a player fumbled.
That defense averaged almost 4 sacks a playoff game that year, 11 sacks total, (5, 3, and 3). Also had 5 forced fumbles that playoffs, (2, 1, and 2), also had 18 tackle for losses that playoffs, (10, 5, and 3), plus an int.
Also guys like Edelman, wes Welker, tight end like Gronk, Amendola, Hogan etc are receivers that fit amazingly with the check down game plan. Belicheck knowing how to find the best receivers for that specific scheme.

You forgot to mention how his offense that averaged 32 ppg scored 17 against an "elite" giants defense that allowed 25 ppg. He threw 2INTs and 0TDs in the conference championship but got bailed out by Billy Cundiff shanking a 32-yard field goal wide left. It also shows how great his supporting cast has been that his worst defenses ever were only 17th twice, every other time they were above average, and were top 10 about 70% of the time. His stats were also not elite when Moss was gone, as he threw only 28 touchdowns at most before Moss, and 50 in 2007 with Moss accounting for 18 of them.

Yeah, I just had my first NFL stadium experience when I went to see the Buccs play the Colts at Lucas Oil. It was an amazing experience. However, there was one thing that kept bothering me. As my family and friends and I were all exiting the stadium all the Buccs fans who attended the game kept saying the same thing "Yup, he's the GOAT all right!!!!", "He's the GOAT and he just showed us why today!!!". The game was a clutch win where the Colts (led by average QB Carson Wentz) kept the Buccs on their toes the whole game and was almost going into OT. And most of the plays were hand offs to Leonard Fournette, and all the passes that meant anything were to Gronk, ya know like the best TE in NFL history and all. Like Tom did literally nothing the whole game, to the point where Carson Wentz was leading Tom Brady in passing yards and completions for most of the game up until Tom's last drive. Like I loved the experience but all of the drunk brain dead Buccs bandwagoners need to wake up and at least admit that Tom is boring and basic.

I like your video, this brings up a good conversation. Brady is almost mystified now so it’s difficult to really critique him. I do think there are some disconnects between what you are arguing and what I’ve seen from Brady though.
He has a strong arm, not Mahomes or Rodgers level, but he can make every throw necessary at a high level. His pocket presence is nearly unmatched among NFL qbs (Brees and Rodgers in that race too). This is extremely valuable and difficult to replicate. His processor is the greatest of any quarterback ever. This is extremely valuable and difficult to replicate. Other quarterbacks can’t win with those short passes because they can’t read defenses or work through their reads like Brady can. In structure he is truly dominant. This is his biggest strength imo. He is extremely accurate, easily top ten of all time in that regard.
He is limited though. He runs like a wounded gazelle. He is a very poor athlete. He is not a play extender which is his biggest weakness, and the way teams who have been able to have success against Brady have exploited him. Without a good structure, Brady drops from top a top 5 qb ever to maybe top 50. He’s been on amazing teams throughout his career, and he does need help to win super bowls, but doesn’t everybody else? I don’t remember a bad team who’s won a super bowl just because they’ve had a good quarterback.
In my opinion he’s just about the greatest ceiling raising quarterback ever. If you have a good team that allows your quarterback to play within structure, you’d rather have Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers than anybody else because they will drive that bus more efficiently than anyone else in league history. If you have a bad team, you’d rather have Russell Wilson, Pat Mahomes, Rodgers, or other quarterbacks like that. I can’t speak to older players like Terry Bradshaw or Joe Montana because I didn’t watch them play.
The question for me is would you rather have a guy that can make your crap team a playoff team, or your good team a super bowl winner? To me, the argument between Brady and Rodgers is close and I’d probably lean Rodgers over Brady because Rodgers can do both, which is ridiculous. I do think Brady is overrated, but I wouldn’t call him the most overrated sports player ever. He’s a once in a generation type player. We’ll probably never see a quarterback like him again

Last few months I been watching full game highlights of Toms' career. And he has had the most solid teams all around. That said this guy makes a lot of good points, but from what ive seen those Patriots on special teams always help the team win or atleast get back in games where their being physically slaughtered.
A perfect example would be the 2002 regular season Patriots vs Bears

See the problem I have with this argument (and it’s not just used on Brady, but other “modern” QBs) is that you’re assuming Brady in the 80s or 90s would be exactly the same as he is in this reality. But if he was playing in a culture where that was the norm, then obviously he wouldn’t be expecting a flag for every hit. So who’s to say how he would fare.

Thanks, I have been saying this for years. Tom Brady has an average arm, below average mobility and toughness. Excellent accuracy within 15 yards, excellent work ethic and mind 4 the game. This equates to a good system QB. Put Rodgers on NE and he would have 10 rings. Put Brady on the Packers and he would be lucky to see the wildcard round.
#StandYourGround toughness and durability are different. Brady is more durable (and better at avoiding harmful hits) than Rodgers. Just because someone is more injury prone doesn’t make them less tough because some injuries like a concussion for ex. You won’t be allowed back in the game. It doesn’t matter how much Brady would act tough and try to get back into the game.

As stated in my previous reply, when Brady takes hits he's not the same guy and throws off his back foot. This is evident his first Super Bowl vs. the Giants, 3 of the 4 playoff games vs. the Ravens, multiple games vs. Rex Ryan's Jets etc.
