TONY ROMO: OVERRATED OR UNLUCKY?

  • Even though he last played a full season in 2014, Tony Romo's career still inspires intense debate. He had great stats and won 61% of his regular season starts. However, he was injury prone and his teams didn't win in the postseason, going just 2-4 & never even making a Conference Championship Game. That subpar postseason record combined with memorable blunders in high leverage moments caused Romo to be dogged by the dreaded "choker" label for his entire career. I decided to take an in-depth look as to whether or not Tony Romo was truly an overrated choker or a great QB saddled by terrible luck. Enjoy.

I think people forget that Tony Romo was an undrafted quarterback who was a third-stringer for early on in his career. He wasn’t drafted (at all) to be the Cowboys franchise savior. Yet, despite his bad moments he carved out a very nice career for 8 years. He’s the Cowboys all time leader in passing yards and touchdowns.
Sounds like a good career to me.

I was actually at that 2013 regular season game where they ended up losing to the Packers by 1pt. It was so depressing shuffling out of there in a stupor, I have refused to attend a Cowboys game live again. As for the choking, he did have some infamous blunders like the Steelers game in 2008, the Lions game in 2011, and the Packers game in 2013. But I think sometimes his lack of a reliable coaching staff made him look worse than he actually was. I heard once Romo couldn't run audibles in Wade Phillips' offense. That and a bad OL will cook up a disaster, which it did.

Out of all the premier quarterbacks from Tony's era (Drew Breese, Aaron Rodgers Peyton Manning, Big Ben, Phillip Rivers, and Tom Brady), he unquestionably had the worst roster and coach around him, but was still no debate better than at least two of those guys, I would argue 3 of them. Do not forget that when Romo started playing, the Cowboys were one of the worst 5 teams in the league and had been for at least 7 or 8 seasons. Even after that, the defense NEVER improved beyond barely mediocre, the coaching only got worse and worse, and his very best two best WRs his entire career were a washed up diva and a notorious pass dropper. Also do not forget that Romo was basically forced to play so risky because he was in almost every game having to come from behind to win because of his pathetic defense and general coaching strategies. If Romo doesn't get drafted into a completely dysfunctional, in tatters franchise with a completely broken front office, he goes down as a top 5 quarterback ever and is a no question hall of famer.

Why don't you make the comparison of Tony Romo vs Troy Aikman post-1995?
Romo won more games, in both the regular season and the post-season, despite Aikman having a far better defense most years. (Romo's offense was better, but hey, isn't QB play an integral part of an offense's performance?) Once Aikman was no longer surrounded by godlike talent at nearly every position, he won less regular season games than Romo and never won a postseason game.
In fact, by my key criteria of evaluating QB greatness, which is this---when your defense is being shredded, and your running game is being stuffed, you somehow win a game you don't deserve to win because of your QB play---Aikman fails miserably. I can't think of a single time where Aikman won a game like that. Aikman was the ultimate "game manager" QB, he performed flawlessly when all cylinders on the Dallas machine were working, but when they failed, he would join them in the failure. He never overcame a bad performance by the whole team.
By contrast, the great QBs---Brady, Manning, Brees, Rodgers, Marino, Montana, Elway, Staubach, and more--did just that. They won games for their team their team didn't deserve to win. So did Romo. Some QBs (Marino and Elway) doing that was almost a summation of their career (until Elway got a running game in the late 90s).
So in my book, Romo is the #2 QB of all time on Dallas's QB list behind Staubach, with maybe Danny White and Dak Prescott ahead of Aikman.

What gets me is that people use the fumbled snap to judge how good a QUARTERBACK he was (yes, he screwed up, but why is the starting quarterback holding for a field goal?)
and the interception against the Giants which was treated like a choke moment when it was more of a desperation pass.
To me his worst moment was actually 2012, I get his team wasn't that great, but that was such a god awful interception that it was a very hard offseason for Romo defenders like myself.

That belongs to Roger Staubach aka Captain Comeback who was known for coming up big in big games. His numbers are not eye-popping because he played in a run friendly and defensive era. Aikman on the other hand is overlooked compared to the QB's like Favre, Elway, Marino, Kelly, & Young is because of Jimmy Johnson's offense being run first with Emmitt even though he considered the most accurate QB and Michael Irvin having several 1000 yard seasons with Aikman as his QB.
