Add 1mm to the length you want to cut. Add a box and resize it into basically a 1mm sized wall (or blade). Place it at the cut point and call it a hole. CHOP! With a ball/cone/cylinder etc chop at an offset to keep a piece in spec and then duplicate back to a whole

Your instructions are too messy. I have a much easy way to do it: 1) duplicate the object you want to split 2) build a hollow box over the first half 3) combine 4) repeat previous steps with the left half

I found this video several months ago and have been using it ever since. Effective but can get confusing. I modified this process by first duplicating the original object, then sliding one of them down with the cursor until there's a decent gap between the two. Then I follow his method making the two space cubes. Here's my mod - select one of the two space cubes and cursor drag it down over the duplicated original. Now you have two sets of original plus space, clearly showing an original with a left space and another with the right space. Select a set and combine it then repeat with the other set.
i was looking for a way to get 4 'pins' on a front for a box that hold the print with a screen on to move slightly as the print i have seems to have the openings more on the ouside than the stl
Always wondered how to do this and normally i just use hollow boxes and do it along fangled way but it worked, this is 60 second stuff though, thanks so much.

Other way is to 1. Measure object and make copy 2. divide length by 2 And make box that length 3. Make copy of box and use align tool to put each box on each copy of object you want to split directly at the end of it 4. Combine each box and shape and now u have two halves of the object

I have watched this video about 40 times and still no idea. if I follow it word for word when I do the first grouping I lose the half of the object I selected - it disappears, leaving me the contents of the other box only. And shift click actually highlights half the web browser in blue and does nothing. What is the point of the box?Why am I zooming into the picture to select the item?Grouping doesn't feel intuitive to cut the object in half, it simply groups a box and an item (then removes them)
I had some issues myself, but mine was with a detailed object, so the lag it took to make the change made me think nothing was happening, but I had to wait 5 seconds instead. Also if you can get things to work for one half, just do the opposite order for the other half, eventually it will work if you try a couple variations.
Same here. Loose half the first object you separate. have to copy entire object first an do the spitting process twice on each, keeping the opposite side.
Get your boxes laid out like he shows in vid. then before you "group objects" -Select All - and duplicate everything- then group each side in the separate model. For me, sometimes it works like in the video, sometimes i have to duplicate first. Seems to depend on size and complexity.
Hi, can you show me how I can extend something after I have made it? I’m making some frame guards for a motorcross bike and they need to be slightly longer, but I don’t want to start again as they fit great, just need to be 60mm longer at the top part. The section is like an inverted U, 120mm long, but I need to stretch just that part to 165mm. Thanks
Thanks for the tutorial, I couldn't get this to work on the current version, I had to use the same method after duplicating the 3 objects instead of duplicating the object to be cut. Then I had to complete the operation twice to get them to split. For some reason the top would remove and when I grouped the bottom it just deleted it like normal instead of leaving two parts. But your steps helped me get there!

problem I have a Circuler logo but when making the STL of the logo it has also added the transparent square the logo circle sits on. How would I remove the circle from a square.

It took me a couple of times too. I think the problem people have is, that they forget that they have to duplicate the object inside the hole rectangles, before doing the combine steps. Once I did that, the light bulb came on. Thanks
I also like to make my build plate huge so I have more room to work and when my model is done, put my plate by to normal size. Sometimes I'll open two tabs in my browser and copy and paste parts into one tab to make it easier to work with one section at a time and then merge the two together on a single build plate in one of the two tabs I have opened.
Love the technique. Using it all the time now. What I am trying to do now with it is make a two part model split with a screw on one side and a thread on the other that will allow it to be printed and then affixed together with the parts aligned perfectly by using the split and not moving the object while making the screw/thread parts. Any idea on a way to do it would be appreciated.
I know this is a bit late but it might help someone else. What I did was I split the object using his method and then created 4 holes with corresponding pins on the opposing model. The two pieces fit together perfectly. I managed to get the tolerances for the holes down to the point that I don't even need to use epoxy to hold them together but you can definitely use this method along with a light layer of epoxy to make the bond unbreakable.
If possible, please explain how to divide an ellipse into 9 equal sections. I see Auto Cad tutorials but nothing in TinkerCad. I'd like to apply this info to construction of geometrical design forms.
How would you connect them back together? If I wanted to make a flat plane bigger than my print bed, how would I make them like a puzzle so they go back together.
This was very helpful, but with the new version of Tink I couldn't zoom into (through) the object, so I just clicked copy and pasted both sides making separate copies and that seemed to work.
Why can't you draw a hollow box around the object to be cut starting with the left edge of the box at the center of the object and dragging its right edge until it covers the right half of the object. Duplicate the whole thing and move it to the side. Then join the first box and object to cut off the right half of the object. Then go to the duplicate and drag the right edge of the box all the way to the left past the left edge of the object and then join that, leaving the right half of the object. Am I missing something ? And I can't seem to simply zoom inside a box hole which encloses an object to manipulate the enclosed object. What am I doing wrong.
Oh boy I wish I'd seen this an hour ago :) Just couldn't figure out what I was missing. I guess it still lets you keep one side of it, so in a weird way you can still 'slice', move the left behind piece object to one side.. Group the other half and do the same, and you have your two halves.. But there's no way this will be usable on anything complicated.
+Ellen Hunt That's a good question Ellen. I think it would depend on the shape of the object. Symmetrical objects would be easier. I make Tinkercad eggs into eggshells by making a slightly smaller copy turned into a hole and then use the align tool to center it inside on all 3 axis' and then group 'em. If the object isn't symmetrical you could assemble an array of holes of the needed shapes, maybe just a bunch of tall hexagons of various heights because they pack efficiently and group them. Next make that solid and the outside object a hole so you can see how the cavity fits inside. Then turn the cavity object into a hole again and the outside solid and group 'em. Internal overhangs might be a problem depending on the shape of the top. I'm sure CCT can figure another way, I'd like to see his video when it comes out. Good luck, I'm going to try it... We can all use shorter print times that use less material.
Howdy, My tinkercad interface looks a little diff than yours. I tried to zoom into an object but it stops just outside of it. I tried to change the camera from the top view but also no luck. Is there some setting I need to click on to use this function as I can see where it would be very helpfull. I even tried swinging the plane and backing in but it still stops just outside the object. any help you can give will be much appreciated. starting to think they disabled this function. Thanks.
i Great videos. I'm designing a 2 sided coin in Tinkercad. I have side A down but I can't figure out how to flip the coin over so side B is facing up. Both sides have some lettering but not very high so I hope I don't need support. it's maybe 1mm high. the coin is 4mm. Thanks
Does anyone else get an error/ red border around your boxes when you try to group the second time? I select two boxes, make a copy, group them, then select the object to cut out with the grouped boxes. I get an red border around my grouped boxes. PLEASE HELP

You explained the core technique in a chaotic way! Yes, pun intended. By that I mean, you over explained the redundant tips for almost nine minutes and the subject of this video is rushed to just a few seconds ( 3:30 to 4:20 ). Nevertheless that one minute tip is an awesome one. Thank you
I hope this helps. If the cursor is inside the 360 circle it stops on 12.5, 45, 90 degrees etc. If you bring it outside the 360 circle you can get any degree of rotation by whole degrees. If you wanted many copies, each rotated 1 degree you could do a C/copy then a D/duplicate. Then rotate 1 deg, move it away from the original, Then every time you do a D/duplicate another one will show rotated and the same distance from the last one. They will all be separate. (On a Mac it's command C & command D), PCs it's the key in the left bottom corner whatever they call it.
Still struggling a lot with copy-paste after splitting the object ... can you pls emphasis this part in your next tutorial - but please allign your verbs and handling more pricise - is confusing for me.. Thanks- and keep up the good work!

Third way to select red box...just make the "hole" boxes you used for erasing invisible...then when you've selected box click "show all"...

What an absolute faff just to split something. Also my screen isn't the same as yours, no 'design' button.

Hi the shape menus disappeared! I cant no more drag a shape into the work space because it disapeared.
How to get inside the hole to select the object to cut when it won't move inside the hole from any position?
Ive been trying to do this on sketchup this entire day. I cant believe how easy to use tinkercad is after sketchup.
Slicing something in Sketchup is FAR easier than this kludge of a method.

Group the object with a 'hole' object. The hole will then become a hole as you group it, erasing the half of the circle it is sitting over.

Any way to get the Degree circle smaller on some objects so you dont have to zoom out so far and it makes if harder to see up close..
Not that I know of, but I wish they would come up with one until then... zoom away.

im not able to group them. it just keeps selecting the whole object
