    8:00 - You can enter dynamics anywhere in tied notes if you start the caret first. No need to struggle.

    • @andresmontero88
      @andresmontero88  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First of all, thank you @Dorico for watching my video! I tried your solution with the caret, but it only works if you enter a hairpin AND a dynamic. For example:

    • @Flamdragz
      @Flamdragz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andresmontero88 I think if you enter the hairpin, and then hit the spacebar, the hairpin will lengthen. I might be wrong, but I pretty sure you can do this.

    • @mjducharme
      @mjducharme 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@andresmontero88 When you enter a hairpin with the popover it won't actually appear until you tell it where the end of the hairpin is. This is done by going to where you want the hairpin to end and pressing the question mark key. The hairpin should then suddenly appear between where you you entered the < or > and end where you pressed question mark.

      @nickie_katharina_foenshauge 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andresmontero88 You can select the entire tied note, enter the hairpin with the popover and then move it to the right with ALT+Right-Arrow. You don't need to specify the end but can of course. If you do specify the end, you will also need to adjust the length with SHIFT+ALT+LEFT-ARROW.

    • @andresmontero88
      @andresmontero88  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@_v_m_ I agree. There are workarounds with those tied notes, but they're definitely not efficient. Like you said, Sibelius is more intuitive and faster to work with.

  • @dorico
    @dorico 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    9:40 - if you change a 4/4 bar to 3/4 you need to then enter a 4/4 after it otherwise the musicians won't know there's a change... So entering a 3/4 in Dorico does of course apply from that point onwards. When you changed to 5/4 turn on Insert mode first so that Dorico can add that beat for you.

    That theme is so good!! Just wondering how you got the dynamics markings in bar 138 (17:29) in the 7th instrument down - I thought Dorico doesn't like dynamics not attached to an individual note?

    • @andresmontero88
      @andresmontero88  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Jenny! and that is a good question! I had to trick Dorico. I think I initially wrote 2 half notes on the trombones and attached the dynamic to the third beat (second half note). Once I added my dynamics and hairpins, I changed the duration to be a whole note. If you want to add a single dynamic (f, p, mp etc) in the middle, you can use the caret and place it in the beat you want to put your dynamic and call the dynamics popover, but that method is VERY limiting if you want to add hairpins. That's why I used the first method.

      Hi! I've been quite busy with work and haven't checked in detail the latest update. I've been using Dorico 4 and they have improved the way of adding and changing time signatures in the middle of the piece. It's more stable. Video engine seems better, although you might run into problems if you try to upload a file with high resolution. The solution is to have your video files relatively in low res before loading in Dorico. The ties... that's just how the software works... which that's linked to how you enter dynamics on tied notes. Even though you have ways to do that, it's just not efficient compared to the other programs.

    16:15 The fast piano section ends up backfiring on you. First of all, it's overkill for the scene. It shows that you would rather "prove" your capabilities instead of serving the picture. This is what amateurs tend to do.

    Are those bugs fixed in Dorico 4?

      Adding beats/changing time signature got easier and improved. Putting dynamics in the middle of tied notes is the same. There are workarounds and it's possible to do it, but it's just cumbersome to achieve that in my personal opinion.

      @@andresmontero88 Thank you! I have comission for an hour long piece for orchestra and choir and electronics. Until this time i worked in musescore, but i find it still not the same league as sib, fin, and dorico. But I don't know which one to choose! I will be working a in daws also. Dorico seems to have the best system for importing midi files. I will greatly appreciate any advice! For many years I was writing by hand. That is what I had learned many years ago.

      @@mashoy78 If you're not using it for scoring, I'd suggest Sibelius. In my opinion Sib is the best user-friendly notation software and with their recent updates the program has gotten even better. It is fast and efficient. Definitely not Finale. I was a Finale user for many many years, but it's too buggy and has a steep learning curve. You'll end up doing a lot of extra work cleaning a score that either Sib or Dorico does it for you.

      @@andresmontero88 Thank you! I will give a chance to Sibelius although to me it looks very chaotic and cluttered. Visually Dorico looks much more inviting... Is sibelius better than Dorico when it comes to engraving? I mean speed/quality ratio.

      @@mashoy78 Oh that’s interesting. Personal taste definitely takes a role when choosing and liking a software. I’ve worked professionally on all 3 (Fin, Sib and Dorico) and to ME, Sibelius is the fastest and most efficient out of all three. For Scoring I’d go with Dorico though.

    12:00 now you wonder why pros dont use it for film? lol This is an engraving software yet. You can’t show a final score, so which is the point…Notion 6 does this as well, and with Kontakt instruments. Dorico is top, but not there yet

      Adding or changing time signatures in the middle of a piece is something that they have improved in recent updates, which is a good thing.

      It’s extremely easy to make time signature changes in Dorico, and has been for some time. The insert mode makes it very quick and efficient.

      Hi there! You can enter dynamics using the caret when you have tied notes, but it cannot handle hairpins only. You must enter an ending dynamic. I see that as a limitation in Dorico. Hopefully they fix that soon!

    You wasted most of this video talking about minor workflow changes from Sibelius. Instead of the title - scoring in Dorico. I'd be interested to konw the brand of your vertical monitor though.

    14:00 hmm the score seems like odd musical choices, it sounds comical, during a heavy action sequence..

    16:50 Wrong character. Blowing up a vehicle isn't "over the top" heroic. It would make more sense to incorporate a sense of accomplishment and relief in the score. Common sense, right?
