The case sounded familiar, then when "he was found," and local was given. I was like oh yeah I have heard this one. One of Simon Whisler's channels covered this one (casual criminalist i think) and that was also funny listening to his reactions as he read the script. All of Garrent's accusations were histaracal.
100% Jason did something, at some point Beverly found out and tried to protect her other son. The rest of the family was able to buy it just out of grief - they WANTED him to be Nicholas.
I honestly think beverly killed Nicolas and Jason knew she did it, and didn't want anything to do with bordon. maybe he continued to abuse drugs to cope with that
Omg one of the best stories yet?? I've never been so invested that was actually TERRIFYING knowing that someone would impersonate a missing child like that
I think the brother had something to do with it and the mom found out and didn’t want to lose another child. I don’t think the sister knew anything about it and just convinced herself that he was Nicholas because she didn’t want to believe anything else
Nah, m8, ur wrong, because the other way around; The mom did something; Jason is under immense pressure from the guilt of figuring out the truth, but, being under threat of the mom, if Jason exposes anything; On top of this, we have to be suspicious of why the babydaddies aren't involved with this case or the family...; Are they dead? Did the mom get rid of them, too? Or are the 2 dads truly deadbeats that simply don't give a care? There are plenty of evil, "moms," out here; My little brother ran away from one of them;
This was definitely giving me real life story vibes of the scary movie ORPHAN. That's so crazy that grown ppl actually do this and try to take over identities of missing children. How sick!
So sad! The mother and brother sold him for drugs or murdered him. Either way they did something to him. Sounds like the entire family was crazy, poor Nicolas never had a chance tbh.
Lol it cracked me up how Garrett was so into it, believed it whole heartedly and his theories of family selling Nicholas. I knew the plot twist (have heard this story many times before), you knew the plot twist. How you kept a straight face and just kept telling him “well let’s keep going”. I love how you know the story and see his reactions and how he theorizes as the story goes. I love you guys🥰
What a weird position Borden must have been in. Like, if he suspected that someone in the family killed Nicholas and they knew he was a phony, he couldn't exactly go to the police because it would mean exposing himself.
this is deff one of my fav true crime stories, but this is my favorite way its been told. you guys deserve all the recognition! watching garret is always so fun and creates the besst dynamic. love you guys.
ALSO side note. when garret bring up something or might be onto something, i love how payton just NEVER says anything and continues the story. she never gives any hints and lets you put the pieces together with garret.
You tell they’re stories so well u have such a gift honestly I know this case and just hearing you tell it sounds like the first time and Garett’s reactions are amazing
This case has always fascinated me! Stephanie Harlowe did a 2 part super deep dive and the story is WILD!!! Happy Holidays yall!!! 🎄🩶 Edit: Garrett's reactions in this one are hilarious 😂
I’ve been saying the same thing about Disneyland! For the outrageous tix/food prices, they can limit visitors so you can actually enjoy it. Way too crowded & you waste majority of your time in line. I’m with you Garrett
The FBI also discovered that just before Nicholas went missing, Child Protective Services had been notified because he frequently came to school with bruises. The was more to this case than meets the eye!
This case is close to me because I knew Nicholas mother around the time he went missing. One of my friends worked with Beverly at Dunkin Donuts, and another bought their old house for a steal after his disappearance. Beverly once did an interview from the donut shop while I was waiting to pick up my friend, and she came back into the shop crying and dejected. I was a teenager at the time, and I remember her saying that she felt she'd lost Nicholas all over again after the imposter was unmasked. It was a strange case, and some years prior another young local girl (Heidi Seeman) had also gone missing. I've always felt those two disappearances could've been related. The kids even resembled each other physically. At the time that community around Nacogdoches rd was very close knit and we all knew everyone. San Antonio then was known as "the biggest small town in the country" because it was a big military city, but pretty much everyone knew everyone else, and were related in some way. Very interesting story.
Nicholas might as well not had any parents for all the good they did by him. That's not how it is supposed to work. You love and cherish and protect your child above all other. Parents shouldn't have to be told that. What could be more precious than your own baby? Heartbreaking.
It annoys me that the family still portrays Nicholas as a bad kid who caused all the problems. An extended family member told me that the family stopped looking for Nicholas long ago.
I agree! I cannot imagine not wanting to be the best version of you for your kids. I once told my sister that my kids deserved the best me I could give. I felt that way because my mom was horrible. And sadly, from talking to my nephew today, my sister is as well ( which I kind of already knew). My ex wants nothing to do with his children from his marriage before us nor their children. Which benefits me because I DO! I treasure my (step)kids and the wonderful grandkids I got from them. Plus all my daughters friends I have adopted. In particular the kids with horrible parents. I’m “mom” to all of them even when they and my daughters stop being friends. I stay in these kids lives into adulthood because they need people encouraging, praising and supporting them. And had I been able I would have adopted these kids.
This was almost definitely caused by his older brother being on drugs and having drugs around the house. Not to also mention that the mother and other family members were also on heroin. I struggled with heroin addiction for over 20 years. In that time I witnessed many people having to be brought back from overdoses. Nicholas either dipped into someone's drugs, or was using drugs with Jason. Things probably got out of control, and Jason couldn't revive the kid. We're talking about a very street savvy kid, a kid who regularly got in trouble, and a kid who wasn't afraid of trying many things. The guy who posed as Nicholas looked nothing like him. This was obviously a grown man, with different eye color, different hair color, and did not have a french accent. Here is why I believe that someone in the family or many others in the family knew what truly happened to Nicky. I was always baffled how the family so easily accepted a random stranger into their home, claiming to be the missing kid. All of it was just fishy.
The saddest part about this story is that it becomes about Borden not about Nicholas :( like to impersonate a missing child completely disrupts and overshadows any concern for that child
I've heard this story by a lot of youtubers. But I have ti say they way you delivered it and your hubby just lost the whole time was perfect. Even though I already new the outcome..
I've said it many times: it's a very big problem when mothers put their sons in the roll of man of the house. It WILL mess them up. And 99% of the time it will effect the way their future relationships go. Mostly because these types of mothers don't like when the son becomes involved with a woman because they think they are "losing their boy". Not to mention if the mother has issues with drugs , alcohol, and or domestic abuse, the son doesn't have a chance!
always checking on this every Tuesday morning (all the way from the Philippines 🇵🇭 here❤️).. so lucky that I'm here as early as 16mins post upload..❤️❤️❤️
Jason's lied because that would throw the investigation off. He never saw Nicklas breaking in the garage. My intuitions tells me the mom and Jason knows something.
I am so excited for being this early!! 💗 I love your guys show and I’m 14 and want to be a detective! You guys really tell the story in a really special way, Merry Christmas you guys!!
Oh how I miss the old Disney days! My daughter and I lived in San Diego and I grew up in East LA. Disney was so magical. Getting to relive it again with my daughter was the best. We also had SD zoo passes. I just discovered you podcast through a friend recently and I am hooked! I now live in Kansas City Mo. Hello homies! 🤙❤
Have you heard about a case in Ohio where George Wagner IV killed 8 of the Rhoden family over a custody dispute. I have read a little about this case but I would love to know more.
@lapetitefleur3482 yes, but if you grow up in a country you don't develop a neighbouring country's accent 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm Spanish and live in the border with Portugal, I don't have a thick Portuguese accent when I speak in any language 😅
OMG I did not realize how much of a mind F*** this was going to be until I clicked play! I agree with most comments, brother did it - mom found out - rest of the family is blinded my grief. That is such a strange and sad case, I really hope the real Nicholas is found so this story can have some conclusion, at least for the people who don't already know what happened!
Another great watch!! I just love all Garretts comments and he says he doesnt enjoy true crime? Would not be the same without this Wonderful HUSBAND.😂🎉😅🎉
There’s a book called Here Lies Daniel Tate, the book is about this case. In the book the character has two brothers and their names are Nicholas and Patrick. It’s a great book if you’re into mysteries.
Frederic said it on his TH-cam channel in French that Jason is the one who killed Nicholas, one day the mom drunk came back from work and asked him”who tf are you ? I know you’re not my son Jason killed him so who are you ?”
Beverly & Jason are the only ones who know which of them killed Nicholas. We know its one of them. They killed that kid. This is so tragic. Poor Nicholas didn't have a chance.
The insane fact that the fact that the faker Fredrick to this day is still calling random families to this day an telling that he is the lost family member is so sickening
Right before he went missing he was admitted to the adolescent unit at SASH and he told his friends there some stuff.. Staff freaked out when they saw his tattoos at showers he was there a very short time. Not a whole 90days .
They were shocked because they know the real Nickolas was murdered at home so this imposter just open up a can of worms and the admmediate family knows.the imposter shows the real demons are the family.
I feel like this situation calls for a blood test before the dude even went back to the US to be with his “family”. It’s common sense. Both government authorities really screwed up. At least they are consistent. 🙄
Maybe the mom didn't hug nick at the airport because she knew that wasn't her son. OR maybe she thought that WAS nick, and knew he'd remember the horrible thing that she and Jason did to him
I agree wirh some of the other comments. I think the brother did something or knew something happened and the mom found out but didn't report it. Maybe the brother SAW something happen. Maybe he went out to go look for him after he called and told him to walk home. Maybe he felt bad for telling him to walk, so he went out to meet him at the basketball court or to go find him so he can walk the rest of the way with him. Or, the mother did something to her and the brother knows and is covering for her.
I so agree with Garrett about Disneyworld/land. I would pay money to have a day with less people in the park. It’s the one reason I won’t go again. Too stressful!
That opthomologist is incorrect. U can very much change eye color. In fact there are medications and eye drops that can change eye colors. Remember the one that helps i grow more eye lashes. It could change ur eyes from blue to brown easily. Now, if bourden had blue eyes and the kid had blue, thats far harder to do. But they have ways of changing eye color. Haven't yall ever seen those who tattoo their irises? I'm just saying. Also, not that this happened here, but if u get iris transplants to be able to see, which is a real thing, my gma gave her eyes so someone could see after she died, but, that changes ur eye color too. Also, it's amazing what trauma can do. It's completely possible that they wouldn't accept the truth bc for them reality was harder than convincing themselves he was who he was pretending to be. I'm not saying they're innocent, but I was sold into sex slavery, and my mom saw the aftermath of my abuse and I think she was so abused she couldn't accept the truth. Even after we left and I was saved from it, she denied it, despite what doctors repeatedly told her, until I was in my 20s, a decade later. And then she would say like I think it happened. In my early 30s she finally said "I believe that it happened". Which for me was a win. She was my best friend but this was our biggest contention and it hurt me that she couldn't face the truth despite mounting, overwhelming evidence. So, in my opinion, from seeing it first hand, loving someone can make u absolutely unable to accept horrific truths.
Was hoping for a super sweet, "So let's remember Nicholas today as we go about our days, and remember that we need to believe children when they show us just how bad their lives are." You're typically so good at reminding the listeners to honor the victims right at the end, especially involving children. We don't know what happened to him, but he is clearly a victim of his circumstances as a 13-year-old child who was desperately acting out and needing help. Regardless of runaway vs murdered vs who knows what... everyone needs to remain eyes wide open to children in their community. Thanks for another great story!
If you go to Universal Florida (I don’t know about CA) and stay onsite at the Lowes resorts, your front of the line armbands are included. We went the last time on spring break (nightmare?-no actually) the ONLY things we even had a slight wait on was the Harry Potter stuff. But we hit those first thing since we got to go in early.
This case reminds me of the tv show, THE FAMILY.. where in the beginning the boy goes missing and 10 years later he apparently comes back but acting strange his older sister knows its not him and if im correct she is the one who went and got this boy to play along. It was only 1 season, and then they canceled it. Good show left off on a good cliffhanger.
Garrett you can still find lots of slow days at Universal! Disney is definitely tougher, but that's why it's still better to be a resident and go frequently so you don't feel obligated to ride everything and wait in line. Just wait for what you want.
I know Disney world in Florida is extremely unsafe for kids. You should look up all the people that are constantly arresting. It's usually people trying to meet little kids on the internet it's really bad I don't think anyone has any idea how bad it is
Feel like Jason might have killed him in a fit of rage and I say this because of all the fights they would have then Beverly finds out during one of Jason’s and her fight and the sister was fooled for some time like when she went to get him but later on was told because by her mother as in why she wouldn’t hug her “son”
It was a color photo, but the fax machine in Spain was black and white. He later realized that he didn't look like him at all but it was too late. The fact that the family was covering up the boys murder, worked in the con man's favor until it didn't.
I just don’t get how u could look at that man and see Nicholas, especially his family. The older brother came looked at him and said good luck to u. I just want to know what actually happened to the real Nicholas!
Knowing about this case and watching Garret trying to work it out is the best part.
The case sounded familiar, then when "he was found," and local was given. I was like oh yeah I have heard this one. Pop pp
Or maybe the mom did something and Jason was trying to protect her but couldn't deal w it and killed himself
This is literally the Orphan plot stfu 🤣🤣🤣
I honestly think beverly killed Nicolas and Jason knew she did it, and didn't want anything to do with bordon. maybe he continued to abuse drugs to cope with that

YES
Yes! Especially the second orphan. I feel like I was watching the movie in my head while listening to this. It’s so messed up.
And this isn't even close to the only case that is not too dissimilar to that movie
So sad! The mother and brother sold him for drugs or murdered him. Either way they did something to him. Sounds like the entire family was crazy, poor Nicolas never had a chance tbh.

i saw your guys’ billboard driving down i-15 in lehi & i felt so happy for y’all! i am so proud of & so excited for you guys & your podcast!
What happened
What a weird position Borden must have been in. Like, if he suspected that someone in the family killed Nicholas and they knew he was a phony, he couldn't exactly go to the police because it would mean exposing himself.
I am a new subscriber and I have been binge watching all episodes. What a great dynamic between you two. Great content, great delivery. Thank you.

i think it’s very telling that even the serial impersonator gave up his act bc of the extremely weird behavior by nicholas’ family
You tell they’re stories so well u have such a gift honestly I know this case and just hearing you tell it sounds like the first time and Garett’s reactions are amazing
I don’t remember which case brought me to your channel, but I’ve been binging for weeks. You guys have become my comfort show.
i loved watching garrett’s reactions to payton’s reactions to garrett’s reactions to what payton was saying 🤣

“parents kill their children all the time” hurt to hear. even if it’s the truth, that statement made me sick to my stomach

THANK YOU for being faithful to your followers and making content for us!
I haven’t finished this episode, but it’s crazy to me! I’m actually currently binge watching y’all since I’ve just found you!
This is SO much like the movie Orphan specifically the prequel from this year. They 100% got the story from this one. Crazy!
they copied it detail by detail
The saddest part about this story is that it becomes about Borden not about Nicholas :( like to impersonate a missing child completely disrupts and overshadows any concern for that child
I've heard this story by a lot of youtubers. But I have ti say they way you delivered it and your hubby just lost the whole time was perfect. Even though I already new the outcome..

Love that you list your sources
Already watched all the videos you had on this for the "shorts" ..... Definitely had to come watch the full vid!
Definitely my favorite episode. Had me on my toes right throughout!!! Awesome job Payton.
Wow that was a great episode 👏. Your storytelling is always so good. Can't wait til next week.
This may just be the craziest case you covered yet! Much love to you guys, have a merry Christmas ❤
Just about to do some revision for exams, needed something to listen to and this came up
Listened to this one on Spotify. LOVED the episode! Thank you for the great content
always checking on this every Tuesday morning (all the way from the Philippines 🇵🇭 here❤️)..
so lucky that I'm here as early as 16mins post upload..❤️❤️❤️
Happy holidays! love your podcast, keep up the amazing work!
Jason's lied because that would throw the investigation off. He never saw Nicklas breaking in the garage. My intuitions tells me the mom and Jason knows something.
I am so excited for being this early!! 💗 I love your guys show and I’m 14 and want to be a detective! You guys really tell the story in a really special way, Merry Christmas you guys!!
the worst part of becoming a detective is you have to be a narc first /:
Payton is an excellent story teller, so captivating
Oh how I miss the old Disney days! My daughter and I lived in San Diego and I grew up in East LA. Disney was so magical. Getting to relive it again with my daughter was the best. Came here from your shorts! Loving the videos so far!
Have you heard about a case in Ohio where George Wagner IV killed 8 of the Rhoden family over a custody dispute. I have read a little about this case but I would love to know more.
I found you on tiktok and I'm so happy I did!
This case reminds me of that movie called “The Orphan”
So... the guy was "found" IN SPAIN with a thick French accent... not a Spanish accent, a French one... and nobody found that weird?
They literally share a border 🤨
@lapetitefleur3482 yes, but if you grow up in a country you don't develop a neighbouring country's accent 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm Spanish and live in the border with Portugal, I don't have a thick Portuguese accent when I speak in any language 😅
This case ...is just wild AF how tf....LIKE WHAT ????? I did not expect that ending at all
OMG I did not realize how much of a mind F*** this was going to be until I clicked play! I agree with most comments, brother did it - mom found out - rest of the family is blinded my grief. Beverly & Jason are the only ones who know which of them killed Nicholas.
We know its one of them.
They killed that kid.
This is so tragic.
Poor Nicholas didn't have a chance.
I was waiting for this to come out today lol, I’m surprised I’m this early
The insane fact that the fact that the faker Fredrick to this day is still calling random families to this day an telling that he is the lost family member is so sickening
That was while he was in jail. He hasn't impersonated anyone for years, as he's finally comfortable with being himself.
I knew this case already but I watched this video just to hear Garrett’s reaction 😂
garrenti n that blanket is a vibe - my power animal
Right before he went missing he was admitted to the adolescent unit at SASH and he told his friends there some stuff.. Staff freaked out when they saw his tattoos at showers he was there a very short time. Not a whole 90days .
This one, WOW THE WHOLE THING IS INSANE!!!
38:35 this is the one story i hope ends in justice eventually
They were shocked because they know the real Nickolas was murdered at home so this imposter just open up a can of worms and the admmediate family knows.the imposter shows the real demons are the family.

Go to an Orlando Informer meetup at Universal in Orlando. There are no crowds and unlimited food!!!! Ride all the rides with no waiting!!!
PEYTON THE BROWN HAIR OMG!!!! it looks amazing!!
I so agree with Garrett about Disneyworld/land. I would pay money to have a day with less people in the park. It’s the one reason I won’t go again. Too stressful!
Wow this had twists I didn't see coming!
Yes! Best part of my Monday!
P.s. First to comment, finally!
I’m binge watching (just leaving a comment so u guys get recommended more)

You're typically so good at reminding the listeners to honor the victims right at the end, especially involving children.
Wow this case is so weird the family def knows something
The documentary is amazing. Frederick is an artist and I'm sure the family wanted to to hide the truth about Nicholas
Us listening
Garret: ok
Me: HA! I'm dead with his 1 word responses
Garrett you can still find lots of slow days at Universal! Disney is definitely tougher, but that's why it's still better to be a resident and go frequently so you don't feel obligated to ride everything and wait in line. Just wait for what you want.
Just notice a misspelled word sorry. Listening to this again because so many has told it everytime it's different.
From the west coast.... Washington, Oregon, California.. and Idaho... you all need to give credit
Watching from SanAntonio
Just subscribed y’all are awesome
This is close to the movie Orphan 2.. this is craaaaazy
I know Disney world in Florida is extremely unsafe for kids. You should look up all the people that are constantly arresting. It's usually people trying to meet little kids on the internet it's really bad I don't think anyone has any idea how bad it is
Wait really? That’s so disgusting and heartbreaking.
Feel like Jason might have killed him in a fit of rage and I say this because of all the fights they would have then Beverly finds out during one of Jason’s and her fight and the sister was fooled for some time like when she went to get him but later on was told because by her mother as in why she wouldn’t hug her “son”
Ok but this sounds exactly like the movie the orphan first kill 😮 maybe that’s where they got their inspiration from
This case remind me of the plot of orphan 2
This whole story has me boggled like Garrett LMAO
When Carrie picked him up in Spain she said look at his nose, he has always looked exactly like our uncle
It was a color photo, but the fax machine in Spain was black and white. He later realized that he didn't look like him at all but it was too late.
The fact that the family was covering up the boys murder, worked in the con man's favor until it didn't.
As a french I know about the chameleon, but honestly it's super interesting to see the other side of the story ^^
I should of been a detective! Poor Nicholas he deserves justice bless him xx
I just don’t get how u could look at that man and see Nicholas, especially his family. The older brother came looked at him and said good luck to u. I just want to know what actually happened to the real Nicholas!
Grad Nite at Disneyland is pretty much exactly what you're asking for. But sounds like you missed that boat.
