I can't really get through this one. I am from NewZealand and I knew him, not well but I knew of him, he dated a friend of mine and was extremely abusive, we managed to get her out of there thankfully. I still remember when this came out, my friend called us crying and asking if we thought it was her fault for not going to the police about the abuse, she still blames herself because if she had he might have been in jail instead of on twitter, I feel so much for Grace's family, the whole of NZ cried for her it does not happen often in NZ and it was a huge shock. Also even though there was a suppression of the name, we all knew who it was within the first few weeks of the murder happening.

I'm from New Zealand and this case was massive here.
Another thing is, NZ is a really small place. My friend, was matched with a girl on tinder and was going to go on a date with her around 9pm. He got a call from her at 8pm, frantic. He went to the hotel she was at and she explained what had happened: She had gone on a date earlier with a guy, had a couple of drinks, things were going well so he asked if she would go back to his room at a hotel so he could get changed before they went out clubbing for the night (she was gonna no show my mate). She said they went into the room, the guy was all good, then went into the bathroom, she was on the couch in the main room, when the guy came back out and he was like a different person, like a man possessed, really aggressive and scary. She was freaked out and luckily was able to leave as fast as she could out the door though he was chasing her. She got to the elevator and went down to the lobby, by the time she reached the lobby, she had 5 missed calls from the guy. She then rang my mate, after she got off the phone to my mate, the guy was standing behind her. She was visibly destressed so the security guard stayed with her until my mate got there. Once he did, she told him this story, he dropped her home and they didn't talk much after that. A couple of months later, that girl messaged my mate and said, "that guy who killed Grace was the guy I was with that night". She gave evidence at Grace's murder trial.

And the girl that he had a date with the day after (or whenever it was) said that he gave her such creepy vibes. She started walking towards her car and he started to follow her, then she said “oh I parked this other way” and went the opposite direction because she was scared of him. I imagine he felt a rush that couldn’t wait for his next victim. His sentence though, not enough time.

The last thing you said "understand that you've done nothing wrong when you're the victim of things like this" was so reassuring cuz as a survivor of stuff like this myself where I could've just as easily been killed, its so common for people to blame themselves and they continue to think stuff like "maybe if I hadn't been there" Or "if only I had said no" or "if only I had been smarter" etc. when clearly the criminal is the one to blame. It might have been a mistake(not even..?) on my part for trusting this stranger to be who he says he is but it's a "crime" for him to straight up rape/kill me so it goes without saying that it's never the victim's fault.

This coverage is amazing but one note, you keep mentioning that it was Grace's hotel but it was actually his hotel room. The hotel Grace was staying at reported that she never returned to her room the night she went out with him as soon as the police were notified that she was missing. This is why he has the key card/is able to leave and return to the room so easily. It would have been an even quicker investigation if it was her room, because her hotel were one of the first ones contacted upon her case being picked up by police.

@NintendoFanBoy07 no shit. but the difference is: are men actively looking over their shoulder for women with ill intentions every time they leave the house? are they scanning the parking lot at target while they load their car to make sure nobody is watching them, after scanning the store while they're shopping to make sure there are no men following or keeping tabs on them? are men making sure they have pepper spray at their fingertips while on a solo run in case somebody tries to grab them or murder them in the woods?
nobody is naive enough to believe that it's "all men." but for some reason you feel the need to point the finger elsewhere despite all of the statistics about male on female violence. usually, the ones who are so keen on diverting your attention elsewhere are the ones who have something to hide. you sound real sus.
it may not be all men, but it's too many men and until the bad ones wear a scarlet letter to warn those around them, then you all wear that letter. until we are safe walking alone at night, then it'll stay "maybe that man."

@@wiilover07it’s not demonizing all men, when women say “men” they aren’t talking about all of us
a comparison that helped me realize this was russian roulette, it should be safe you have a 1/6 chance of dying but would you take the risk? no probably not; and since men attack women and stuff they don’t know which one so they’re weary of all of us
another example are snakes; if you have 145 snakes and one is poisonous, you wouldn’t go around playing with all the snakes cause there’s one that can kill you, you’d probably avoid them all same goes for men
i used 145 as that is the scaled down amount of men in US prisons compared to the US population; one in every 145 men go to prison for something

She was found just a few kilometres from my home, an area thick with bush. This case haunted our nation. He had name suppression to ensure a fair trial, but very importantly because there were 2 other cases before the courts against him. It was revealed that he was massively abusive to other women. The day after he murdered Grace, before he buried her, he went out on another date with another woman who ended the date because she felt so uncomfortable around him. The fact that her sex life was dragged before the courts and aired to the entire world is just shameful. RIP Grace. Rot in Hell Jessie.

It sad that this what happened and I pray for Grace and her family and I pray they continue to heal. 🙏🏾 Also I love you guys and I love the husbands commentary it makes the show! This is one of the first times I can relate deeply to a victim; as I’m currently studying abroad and am planning to spend most of the upcoming summer traveling around various countries and seeing the world… likely won’t change my plans, but seeing this certainly reaffirms some fears that have been in the back of my mind as a solo female traveller in new and unfamiliar environments. Most of us don't know what to think, my own theory is that they probably drugged her to sleep so they could go out to the bar without worrying and then she was kidnapped and it was so much easier since she didn't wake up to raise an alarm. I've done quite a bit of research into this, I was the same age as madeline when she disappeared and she would have been in my year in school. Its definitely the fault of Portuguese police and the way that they handled the situation that she hasn't been found and probably never will be.

It’s crazy to think he never thought of anything after he looked dead into a camera after it happened. But glad he got caught. There are too many people doing this stuff that get away.

I love listening. I have my entire job listening. We all wait for Mondays, and click our episodes at the same time. Hurry up and talk about what we heard so far during the ads, and then tune back in 😂. Its routine. I work in a lab of 60 people. We all laugh on cue with Garretts 10 seconds. But can you please cover “Youssef Khater” case(s)?

It’s just so so heartbreaking that many indigenous women who go missing in Aotearoa don’t get much, if any media coverage. Grace was a tourist so I get why they had to cover it extensively - but there is still a woman missing who hasn’t had the same treatment from the police in NZ. Her name is Brenna Muriwai and she hasn’t been seen since last year august.

    • @hollyroha265
      @hollyroha265 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The lack of evidence and people coming forward of course plays apart in her still being missing - but it doesn’t make it hurt any less for her whanau and friends

The negative thing about not releasing his name or photo is that others he victimized can't come forward. Sometimes other cases are solved because an accused person is recognized from previous "bad acts". Also, other police might have an image of him as a suspect in another case, but have no opportunity to get that info because he is being protected.

I'm from NZ and I remember this case very well. During the same time a Chinese woman was killed by her partner with very little reporting. It kindda feels like that conversation about Missing white woman syndrome, and some argued that because Grace is a pretty white British girl. (Both are equally tragic but received different attention)
In NZ lawyers would ask the defendant to pled not guilty to go on a trial, to see if they could get less sentences, even if all the evidence is against you. It's not about whether or not he is remorseful.

I understand, but hate when people wait so long to report someone missing. Best case it’s a misunderstanding and they’re found fine, worst case you increase chances of finding them alive. The first 72 hours are so vital
