    • @XaeeD
      @XaeeD 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      The 10 km estimation is the object's minimum size. Other estimations put it up to 80 km, although most commonly, you'll hear scientists speak of an asteroid of 10-15 km in diameter, which is bigger than the largest mountain on Earth. The object created a crater, 100 km wide and around 30 km deep. The crater is located on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, although there was no land at the time it hit. The crater is called Chicxulub. Needless to say, the effects were devastating, setting in motion one of the Earth's biggest extinction events; killing off many organisms (both on land and in the water). This occurred some 65-66 million years ago. If it were to happen now, there's no way we (as a species) would survive, as the blast of such a monstrosity colliding with our planet would be billions of times more powerful than any man-made atomic device. There's also no way to prevent it from happening. They can say what they want, they're not going to stop a 15 km wide iron bolide from space. I don't think they'd even inform the masses, as it would lead to widespread panic, chaos, and the fall of civilization even before the thing hit. Some of the super wealthy might try to escape the planet; blast off to Mars or hover in the Earth's orbit for a couple of years, or maybe they'd dig underground shelters where they could wait out the effects, but I doubt any of that would actually accomplish anything. I think mankind would be doomed, no matter our attempts.
