Not sure it will happen. Every time the top protoss get a patch where they have a shot at the title, the peasant-players are completely dominated by toss. Toss needs a redesign, and that is way too much work for a "dead" game.
Protoss does good harass and attack -> Protoss leads. Both do nothing and Terran only on one base for a while -> Terran leads and is ahead. What a comeback and win 👍🏼
The fact that you think that this how PvT works tells me everything I need to know. Clown shoes you know that Protoss always comes out with a worker lead in the early to mid game right and it's on Terran to do harass or a 2 base all in otherwise late game Protoss macros to 200/200 and stomps Terran right? @@dannyy8619 Mules are just over 4 times more efficient than probes. You also have to invest 50 minerals for a probe. So when you say the Protoss has a worker advantage what do you even think the amount of probes would be "early to mid game" and what do you believe is optimal Terran macro / how many minerals each side has at (X) time? Also you didn't address the maxed out scenario out well. *Battlecruiser laughing over protoss screams* The late game scenario involving BCs takes a pretty fat dump on Protoss. Even if Protoss tries to bring their army to one side then mothership port them to the other side, the BCs can literally section off Protoss army by only jumping a few BCs then the rest after the mothership calls the army over GG. BCs and Ghost cover the Protoss army well because marine dps and marauder vs stalker is just THAT good. If you are having trouble with Protoss just build ghost / bc with infantry. Now, if getting to that point in the game is an issue for you, I would suggest not throwing your army away on a poorly executed attack.
I really feel like they completely misjudged Game 2 of Cure vs Astrea. They kept acting as though Astrea had some big lead early on, but he really didn't. When he was pushing Cure out of his natural, he was taking just as much damage from drops. And by the time he'd stabilized from those drops, Cure was already retaking his natural.
@@PhilW08 how do you define "mid level Terran"? I think Terrans just happen to have lots of top level players at the moment, including Maru-Cure-Clem-Byun-Bunny-Gumiho-HM. Protoss only has MaxPax, herO and maybe Classic. Astrea isnt a top Protoss, hes more mid-pack to be honest.
@@tigera6 I suppose that's the chicken or the egg type of scenario. It's hard to say whether they are mid-level players because of their race, or because they just aren't good enough. The fact is that protoss is struggling, if that is because by chance the top players have chosen different races, or if it's because it's very hard to compete with protoss in the top is a discussion that won't be resolved ever, unless the top players agree to switch races for a few years, which I highly doubt will happen.

They just dont have these players left currently playing, herO and MaxPAx are carrying the race and MaxPax doesnt even play offline. If you take Maru and Cure off the Terran race, I doubt Terran would be able to win anything this year, then would we blame the balance on Terran is too weak as well?
@@tigera6 Since there are so few people in the highest tier of the game, it's hard to get some real data. Maybe it's just a coincidence? But we have Maru, Dark, Serral, Cure, Gumiho, Byun, Ragnarok, Reynor, Special and lots of others that are still out there getting qualified for stuff. Where are all the protoss has-beens? Why can't they keep up? Were they never good enough to begin with, and only won stuff because of protoss cheese/imbalance earlier, which is now corrected? Where are the emerging protoss players? Stuck in mid-tier it seems. I know toss is the most hated race, so nobody cares if it stays this way, but it would be nice to see the full game in top tier play as well.
He also made some mistakes early on in all his matches. He misclicked in the selection screen when he picked Protoss. He should’ve picked Terran if he wanted to win.
Sometimes people just get build order bopped...but I was genuinely confused in Match 2. The losing player looked like a low-mid level Masters player and made so many mistakes and bad choices
Terran has always been the race with the highest skillcap. Pro terrans are just finally to the level where you can see it matter. They've really just all upgraded their play in korea especially, perhaps they are all got maru coaching.
It's the most developed race in terms of variety and tech. It also takes the longest to learn, but they've had the time to now with no patches to interfere with how it all comes together. Also this season's map pool with oodles of choke points and dead air space behind base areas really thumbs the scale in Terran favor. It's hard not to notice the medivacs camping the dead air space sometimes all game long.
Guys, come on. I think protoss is a underpowered as well, but Astrea losing to Cure, Ryung, and Solar was notna balance issue. Max is a great player and has shown a ton of improvement, but hes still outclassed by everyone else in this group
You think cure game two isnt a textbook imbalance example? He gets rocked and is able to bouce back due to the ability to defend/Harass/ and mule simultaneously. While in other games if protoss looses one early game unit like a colossus, or is slightly out of position during a drop and its gg. Come on man, get real, i dont play i just watch so i dont have a dog in this fight but the game isnt even watchable anymore and i have no idea how the protoss pro’s can subject themselves to this.

@@meadbert P got QOL changes while T was slightly buffed and Z was slightly nerfed. P needs buffed, it's needed buffed, for a long list of reasons. The intended asymmetric balance created by the original Blizz devs for SC2 only works when you actually have an engaged dev team and we don't have that. The patch wasn't "great", it was just a small start on a long-ass list of issues and it was pretty underwhelming unless you're a diamond player who could get a lot more enjoyment from minor QOL changes. Which matters, but not if we're talking about GM/esports balance.

Hero isn't looking like one of the greats, lately. There's some map pool considerations to take into account. IMO we could bring back some pro-Protoss layouts, like rich gas thirds and Pylon-spanning same-level gaps from third to natural or even to the main. In the lower leagues, we're closer to solid balance than we've ever been; I kinda don't give a shit and am still pretty concerned about the balance at the top level. I'd much prefer to see the GSL and other major tournaments showing compelling, diverse results. ... and yeah, some of the spirit of Protoss imbalance may be a cause of seeing so few Protoss pros try hard enough to get to the top level. Astrea losing this group isn't an indication of balance IMO.
P is underpowered at the top level. They have a few issues. Their map vision is the most expensive of any race, and also requires the most effort to obtain and more critically maintain. Their early game is a joke (adept all-ins are countered by....just building queens, for ex.) outside of cheeses and tech masking which doesn't work consistently at the highest level. Their late game is also always going to lose to Z or to T, EXCEPT for one comp which is probably unmicroable (Carrier/Oracle/Templar/Disrupter is probably the best late game army but no one can micro that), and their midgame units are powerful but clunky and expensive. So they can't play for the late-game, they can't play for a early-game pressure; all P has is midgame timing and tech all-ins and early game cheese. They either need to be given the best late-game, and have a more defensive, cost-efficient, tech focused style, or their early game units need to be given some teeth and have a reworked tech path. Can't make the stalker better, or the zealot though, because they're the midgame core for P and now you've just made them OP. P has a lot of issues, and their balance is probably the most sensitive right now, so it's just a shitshow. Oh and they smash at the lower level, so they somehow need to be reworked to be worse for bad players, and better for good ones.
For some reason I still watch GSL without Artosis. Let that be a compliment to the new caster, i really can't stand anyone else filling in unless its Special or another household name.
State - he's great! He was on the edge of the pro scene way back in the IPL days, as a player (Protoss). IMO he does the analysis bits better than Artosis, who's one true love is and always will clearly be BroodWar. You gotta miss the most dynamic duo of Tastosis, but we still get them for ASL, so I'm relatively satisfied. It's tough to budget, but I'd really like to see a guest caster happen intentionally more often, rather than just when one of the main casters needs time off. Particularly in these earlier stages.
I dont want to sound mean spirited but Astrea seemed completely unprepared. Missed everything on the minimap, big mistakes on building placements, horrible micro mistakes, the unite getting stuck. It seems a bit over his skiis out there.
1. Protoss is always having lower army size than terran. It hurts to see and I dont get it why not build army more... you cant compete with terran if you have less army.. 2. Solar finaly plays solid ZvT
They are forced into it, by constantly losing Probes to Mines and Liberators. All it takes is a momentary distraction and one mine can take out a dozen Probes. Given enough time it WILL happen. Eventually Protoss needs to push out with their smaller army, and hope for good trades (usually Disruptor hits)..... or just slowly die as Terran forces them into an unwinnable war of attrition. If they don't hit the timing right and run into ranged Libs without Tempests, then they usually lose. I'm not saying Protoss isn't winning any games, but they are losing more than they are winning.
There are many reasons for this. Firstly protoss invests more infrastructure costs than army. A rax with a reactor is more efficient than a gateway. Secondarily, terran at any given time needs less workers due to mules to maintain the same mineral income and generally needs less gas as well as their units are not gas heavy in cost. Thirdly, terran production is constant and fairly easy to maintain without losing build cycles. You can queue up all units and never miss a beat. Protoss production is episodic meaning you can miss a production cycle if you don't specifically take the time to warp in. This largely leads to terran always having the larger army. If a toss is on equal worker count as the terran, they are losing at that moment. You need to be 10 worker ahead to be on even economic ground. This isn't a balance whine. Just a statement of the mechanics of PVT.
@@sunburn74 Infrastructure-wise I would argue that Terran also need to invest a lot into that as well. But the issue has been the Bio units from Terran just straight up murder Protoss Gateway units, and thats without Ghost. So when one race is inherently more efficient than the other, you need to outmine your opponent by having more workers and less army supply. Protoss is getting more like Zerg at this point in time when fighting Terran.
@@mquiring3373 Yup, Mules too. Zerg does have a better chance to win vs Terran in late game, but even they struggle once the map is full of well-protected PFs defending Orbitals. I'd be down for a global Mule and/or PF limit or something, but we know there won't be a patch anytime soon if ever. I guess for now the answer is, don't let T get there???

I love GSL, but the decision to make videos harder to watch (videos on stream have a terrible overlay, and vods maxing out at 360) - I can’t wrap my head around it. Why intentionally make your product worse?
The overlay was there so that viewer has to view their online stream on Afreeca. And the VOD is uploaded immediately after the so, so it take time to get the higher definition up. I am sure they will have the better resolution VOD by tomorrow.
The 360P is TH-cam, it does it every time with every video. The overlay is from it being live-streamed on TH-cam and it is to promote their livestream on Afreeca. After the stream ends, they take the livestream VOD down and replace it with the full VOD, which doesn't include the overlay.

its just not worth it for foreigner to play in GSL at this point unfortunately, they could all play in this GSL but they chose not to because the prizepool isnt high enough to cover the cost of living and flight. Last year prizepool was more decent, and Reynor tried but didnt make it deep.
Serral would dominate GSL if he wanted to relocate there, there is no debate about that, he has shown how easily he can crush every single top Korean for at least 5 years now. Only Maru fanboys talk about GSL because their boy gets destroyed in all the major international tournaments. Also, Maru can't even be considered for GOAT status while he has 0 world titles. Serral has 2, while Reynor 1 and 2 finals. Come again when Maru can consistently beat Serral and Reynor, because right now he gets his ass kicked by both, and that's even with his broken race.

@@PhilW08 how do you define "mid level Terran"? I think Terrans just happen to have lots of top level players at the moment, including Maru-Cure-Clem-Byun-Bunny-Gumiho-HM. Protoss only has MaxPax, herO and maybe Classic. Astrea isnt a top Protoss, hes more mid-pack to be honest.
@@tigera6 I suppose that's the chicken or the egg type of scenario. It's hard to say whether they are mid-level players because of their race, or because they just aren't good enough. The fact is that protoss is struggling, if that is because by chance the top players have chosen different races, or if it's because it's very hard to compete with protoss in the top is a discussion that won't be resolved ever, unless the top players agree to switch races for a few years, which I highly doubt will happen.

@@tigera6 Since there are so few people in the highest tier of the game, it's hard to get some real data. Maybe it's just a coincidence? But we have Maru, Dark, Serral, Cure, Gumiho, Byun, Ragnarok, Reynor, Special and lots of others that are still out there getting qualified for stuff. Where are all the protoss has-beens? Why can't they keep up? Were they never good enough to begin with, and only won stuff because of protoss cheese/imbalance earlier, which is now corrected? Where are the emerging protoss players? Stuck in mid-tier it seems. I know toss is the most hated race, so nobody cares if it stays this way, but it would be nice to see the full game in top tier play as well.

Terran has always been the race with the highest skillcap. Pro terrans are just finally to the level where you can see it matter. They've really just all upgraded their play in korea especially, perhaps they are all got maru coaching.
toss really could do with more microable units that matter
It's the most developed race in terms of variety and tech. It also takes the longest to learn, but they've had the time to now with no patches to interfere with how it all comes together. Also this season's map pool with oodles of choke points and dead air space behind base areas really thumbs the scale in Terran favor. It's hard not to notice the medivacs camping the dead air space sometimes all game long.
Funny how all those terrans suddenly became good right after the last patch where protoss was significantly nerfed...

Guys, come on. I think protoss is a underpowered as well, but Astrea losing to Cure, Ryung, and Solar was notna balance issue. Max is a great player and has shown a ton of improvement, but hes still outclassed by everyone else in this group
You think cure game two isnt a textbook imbalance example? He gets rocked and is able to bouce back due to the ability to defend/Harass/ and mule simultaneously. While in other games if protoss looses one early game unit like a colossus, or is slightly out of position during a drop and its gg. Come on man, get real, i dont play i just watch so i dont have a dog in this fight but the game isnt even watchable anymore and i have no idea how the protoss pro’s can subject themselves to this.

@@meadbert P got QOL changes while T was slightly buffed and Z was slightly nerfed. P needs buffed, it's needed buffed, for a long list of reasons. The intended asymmetric balance created by the original Blizz devs for SC2 only works when you actually have an engaged dev team and we don't have that.
The patch wasn't "great", it was just a small start on a long-ass list of issues and it was pretty underwhelming unless you're a diamond player who could get a lot more enjoyment from minor QOL changes. Which matters, but not if we're talking about GM/esports balance.

Astrea had zero chance of beating Cure and Solar. He had a chance for Ryung and that's why it went 2-1.
Hero isn't looking like one of the greats, lately.
There's some map pool considerations to take into account. IMO we could bring back some pro-Protoss layouts, like rich gas thirds and Pylon-spanning same-level gaps from third to natural or even to the main.
In the lower leagues, we're closer to solid balance than we've ever been; I kinda don't give a shit and am still pretty concerned about the balance at the top level. I'd much prefer to see the GSL and other major tournaments showing compelling, diverse results.
... and yeah, some of the spirit of Protoss imbalance may be a cause of seeing so few Protoss pros try hard enough to get to the top level. Astrea losing this group isn't an indication of balance IMO.

hero lost in the round of 16 in previous season and barely made it on second place this season, it's safe to say that protoss is underpowered.
P is underpowered at the top level. They have a few issues.
Their map vision is the most expensive of any race, and also requires the most effort to obtain and more critically maintain. Their early game is a joke (adept all-ins are countered by....just building queens, for ex.) outside of cheeses and tech masking which doesn't work consistently at the highest level. Their late game is also always going to lose to Z or to T, EXCEPT for one comp which is probably unmicroable (Carrier/Oracle/Templar/Disrupter is probably the best late game army but no one can micro that), and their midgame units are powerful but clunky and expensive.
So they can't play for the late-game, they can't play for a early-game pressure; all P has is midgame timing and tech all-ins and early game cheese. They either need to be given the best late-game, and have a more defensive, cost-efficient, tech focused style, or their early game units need to be given some teeth and have a reworked tech path. Can't make the stalker better, or the zealot though, because they're the midgame core for P and now you've just made them OP.
P has a lot of issues, and their balance is probably the most sensitive right now, so it's just a shitshow. Oh and they smash at the lower level, so they somehow need to be reworked to be worse for bad players, and better for good ones.

State - he's great! He was on the edge of the pro scene way back in the IPL days, as a player (Protoss). IMO he does the analysis bits better than Artosis, who's one true love is and always will clearly be BroodWar. You gotta miss the most dynamic duo of Tastosis, but we still get them for ASL, so I'm relatively satisfied.
It's tough to budget, but I'd really like to see a guest caster happen intentionally more often, rather than just when one of the main casters needs time off. Particularly in these earlier stages.

I dont want to sound mean spirited but Astrea seemed completely unprepared. Missed everything on the minimap, big mistakes on building placements, horrible micro mistakes, the unite getting stuck. It seems a bit over his skiis out there.

1. Protoss is always having lower army size than terran. It hurts to see and I dont get it why not build army more... you cant compete with terran if you have less army..
2. Solar finaly plays solid ZvT
They are forced into it, by constantly losing Probes to Mines and Liberators. All it takes is a momentary distraction and one mine can take out a dozen Probes. Given enough time it WILL happen. Eventually Protoss needs to push out with their smaller army, and hope for good trades (usually Disruptor hits)..... or just slowly die as Terran forces them into an unwinnable war of attrition. If they don't hit the timing right and run into ranged Libs without Tempests, then they usually lose. I'm not saying Protoss isn't winning any games, but they are losing more than they are winning.
@@ZCasavant Let's not forget mules. Zerg and Protoss HAVE to out expand Terrans or the clock is ticking, but it leaves the stupidly open to pushes.
There are many reasons for this. Firstly protoss invests more infrastructure costs than army. A rax with a reactor is more efficient than a gateway. Secondarily, terran at any given time needs less workers due to mules to maintain the same mineral income and generally needs less gas as well as their units are not gas heavy in cost. Thirdly, terran production is constant and fairly easy to maintain without losing build cycles. You can queue up all units and never miss a beat. Protoss production is episodic meaning you can miss a production cycle if you don't specifically take the time to warp in. This largely leads to terran always having the larger army. If a toss is on equal worker count as the terran, they are losing at that moment. You need to be 10 worker ahead to be on even economic ground. This isn't a balance whine. Just a statement of the mechanics of PVT.
@@sunburn74 Infrastructure-wise I would argue that Terran also need to invest a lot into that as well. But the issue has been the Bio units from Terran just straight up murder Protoss Gateway units, and thats without Ghost. So when one race is inherently more efficient than the other, you need to outmine your opponent by having more workers and less army supply. Protoss is getting more like Zerg at this point in time when fighting Terran.
@@mquiring3373 Yup, Mules too. Zerg does have a better chance to win vs Terran in late game, but even they struggle once the map is full of well-protected PFs defending Orbitals. I'd be down for a global Mule and/or PF limit or something, but we know there won't be a patch anytime soon if ever. I guess for now the answer is, don't let T get there???

I love GSL, but the decision to make videos harder to watch (videos on stream have a terrible overlay, and vods maxing out at 360) - I can’t wrap my head around it. Why intentionally make your product worse?
The overlay was there so that viewer has to view their online stream on Afreeca. And the VOD is uploaded immediately after the so, so it take time to get the higher definition up. I am sure they will have the better resolution VOD by tomorrow.

The overlay is from it being live-streamed on TH-cam and it is to promote their livestream on Afreeca. After the stream ends, they take the livestream VOD down and replace it with the full VOD, which doesn't include the overlay.

its just not worth it for foreigner to play in GSL at this point unfortunately, they could all play in this GSL but they chose not to because the prizepool isnt high enough to cover the cost of living and flight. Last year prizepool was more decent, and Reynor tried but didnt make it deep.
I think (hope) that Serral has earned the title as the best player in SC2 history. I'm not even rooting for zerg, but that guy is a beast.
