- Your boy Spider-Man and Iron Man are buddies working at a zoo, when a Koala stole Spidey's banana and threw it at a rhino. When Iron Man went to get it, he was impaled and Spider-ma had to fit an ordinary rhino who so happened to look like Paul Giamatti. Thankfully Iron Man was not hurt, but because he now has an extra hole in his stomach, he now has to have two arc reactors on his body, which ruins his ability to wear shirts with logos.

I feel like the necklace that Peter bought for MJ was symbolic of the ideal image he had of Tony as well as the self image he aspired to. But when the necklace gets broken, and Peter apologizes, MJ replies: "I actually like it better broken." I feel like that was the perfect analogy for Peter recognizing Tony as a man rather than the idealized superhero as well him accepting himself for all of his flaws and limitations.
That first requires peter to learn unsavory information about tony to finally knock him off the pedestal Peter's nostalgia put him on, homecoming was missing this information being presented to peter as well and they make his decisions very jarring

Peter's image of Tony in Far from Home had became more than that of mere fatherly figure but instead raised to a perfect Messiah/Jesus-like figure because Tony is literally now worshipped liked a God/Jesus by everyone in the world due to Tony's self-sacrifice to save the universe - that's what all those shrines, lit candles and wall painting of Iron Man/Tony that Peter sees surrounding him in the beginning of the movie represents and is telling us the audience - as it is to draw a parallel to our real world where only gods of large organised religions are worshipped and enshrined in such a way. The fact that Tony foresaw his own death and had Fury hand Peter his glasses only further deifies Tony's presences in Peter's mind. Peter only has to realise that Tony is also just a man and that no man is God or can become God, including Peter himself, for him to break out of the trap he constructed and put himself in, and that was done by Happy whom re-humanises Tony's imagine in Peter's mind and have Peter be reminded of how Tony is just as fallible as he is - which is something Peter himself is completely familiar with with all the very humane father/son-like interactions he had with Tony, but merely buried in his heart due to the traumatic lost of Tony in his life. It doesn't and never require Peter to learn some hidden skeletons in Tony's closet to see this.
Also note how this theme is carried by Mysterio's character as well, Mysterio's not just a copy of Tony - but was an further idealised and perfected version of Tony. Mysterio was extremely patient and caring to Peter, spending time to listen to Peter's issues and concerns, something which Tony never explicitly shown to Peter before. Tony had always been a bit distance, clumsy and short-tempered with Peter, it should've been something Peter knows because that was his central conflict with Tony in Homecoming, but again, the death of Tony just made Peter lost sight of how imperfect Tony was.

I love how this video gives concept to the Iron Man-Spider-Man relationship that I see. Self-Esteem is really the main player in classic Mentor-Protege relationships.
I hate how so many people say that Spider-Man is Iron Boy, and to that I say... Peter is trying to learn that himself right now.
When we say "Spider-Man will be the next iron Man," we're not saying that he's directly following in the character of Tony Stark's footsteps, we say that because he's likely going to be a face of the MCU going forward, just like Iron Man was.
However, Peter reflects Tony Stark in all the ways that matter. He's witty, intelligent, and has a strong will. So when people complain that things associated with Tony are now being associated with Peter, THIS is what they are connecting. Peter is his own person, but he reflects Tony in all the ways that made Tony great. Those traits are now are being used by "a kid from Queens" rather than a "genius, billionaire, playboy, philantropist."
I would bet money that the final line of Spider-Man 3 will be "I am Spider-Man." Because it will not only reflect Tony's delcaration of his own idenitity, it will mark the end of Peter's arc where he becomes his own hero, outside the shadow of Tony Stark.

If in due time like 10 or 12 years later when holland looks and begins playing a more adult spider-man that is akin to our ideal images, we will look back at these movies and go- oh wow, this is all fits in with how far the character has grown! Though, I do want uncle ben and the classic motto to be brought into the narrative eventually...

Yo I had the same idea for the end of the film, the best final swing in Spider-Man history then he hits us with, “who am I? I’m Spider-Man.” It’s narratively perfect.
In Homecoming, he had to learn to reaffirm his personal connections and values as Peter Parker, in Far from Home he had to prioritize Spider-Man over his personal goals and wishes, so I think it would be nice if the third movie would be finally about merging these two identities hence reconciling his private and public self. And yes, that could absolutely mean "My name is Peter Parker and I am Spider-Man" moment.
I can't help but feel that we sort of live an age of cognitive dissonance when it comes to some audiences. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty to point out how problematic big studio mentalities can get, but I think it can be odd to see many people switch between "Why can't people come up with new ideas?" or "Come up with something original!" but when new and fresh attempts to take established IP's into genuinely different directions are presented, we suddenly get cries of "That's not-" such and such or "#NotMy" such and such or saying we should go back to making them in the "good ol' days". Sometimes we even get stuff that receives so much backlash and harsh replies before the stuff even comes out. IE how reboots of shows on Netflix like She-Ra and Carmen Sandiego got a lot of backlash for their new premises and how much they seem different from their classic versions. And still to this day I hear the "Iron Boy" or "Spider-Man Jr." calls.
Sure, Peter has more tech and Tony Stark plays a HUGE role in his life more so than the traditional image of Spider-Man we are accustom to. It can be very distracting and off. But regardless, the new mechanics of how he interacts with Tony, looks up to him, respects him, and strives to be him all leading to an epiphany of self-discovery works so much. It still helps us retain that feeling of everyday strife that has made Parker work so well and become so timeless, the struggle with technology allows us to get a good allegory for a young and inexperiences boy entering into a grand world of superheroes, and he still learns from all experiences to be the best Avenger out of all of them. And that to me, even if it is different, is Peter Parker. And I would MUCH rather having something like that for Spidey on his third cinematic reboot as he enters the MCU than telling the same story from the Raimi or Webb plots we saw before hand.
I would always take something like Homecoming and Far From Home over safe homages to the past and reminders of what "real" Spider-Man is. It is better to challenge your audience than to cater as a certain director famously said last December. And I would much rather have daring and perhaps uncomfortable-at-first risk-taking than safe and predictable pandering.
I think it’s just a case of different people wanting different stuff. Some people feel more grounded in the past. Some people feel more grounded in the present, or even future. You can’t appease everyone.

@@chromaticswing9199 That is true that it can all depend on preferences or personal desires, and stuff like that is perfectly natural. Though my main problem with many fanbases is that some don't seem open to new stuff in general at all. I like to say it's important to remember when all of us read _Green Eggs and Ham_ when we were little. Or better yet, remember what _The Great Gatsby_ says in case you never read it in school or forgot about it in class. Green Eggs tells us that even if we have preferences or default desires, we should at least try something new to see if we will like it, and Gatsby teaches us that while nostalgia and appreciation of the past is natural and can be beautiful, constantly trying to recreate and live in it instead of moving on will only lead to disappointment and misery.
I think what really gets me is when many people condemn or blast a piece of media before it's even out because it's not like what they remembered, or its inherently bad or lesser than the original because it's "unrecognizable". It reminds me why I have a lot of respect for the Godzilla fanbase. Sure, every fanbase has some degree of toxicity, but what's great about the Godzilla series is that it's SO FLEXIBLE. In ways other franchises aren't because their fanbases demand them not to be like that. The G-Man has been a gritty political commentary on nuclear warfare, a bright and happy superhero, an environmentalist, an anti-hero facing the concepts of adulthood and death, a satirical criticism on nationalism, and even a pulpy behemoth of power and destruction in more comic-book type films. And because of that, not only is there a Godzilla movie for everybody to love, but we are able to get so many new and engaging interpretations of the character that deliver something fresh every decade. I think if all franchises are allowed to be that flexible in terms of fan feedback we would be getting more unique and engaging ideas from the minds of eccentric artists instead of bland, soulless, corporate-fueled fan-service that seems to permeate many ongoing blockbusters.
And when we get something that does take-risks and works it not only stands out but it tends to be so good. IE going back to earlier, how Noelle Stevenson and crew rebooted She-Ra and made something that respects the original but also goes deeper into many themes more modern cartoons have discussed with its flamboyant, pulpy, and unapologetic LGBTQ elements. Or how the new Carmen Sandiego retains the feel of the character while changing her character to be more Sly Cooper-like crafting an engaging and thoughtful story and character development. Or how those direct-to-video Scooby Doo movies and Mystery Incorporated really reinvented the franchise, how Mad Max's most recent movie made thoughtful commentary on hierarchy, how The Legend of Korra discusses political elements Avatar never got to with a new generation such as anarchy, riots in the wake of collapsed kingdoms, identity bending, etc. I think even if people don't like these things they should at least respect them, and push for more risk-taking than recycling the past, not going anywhere, and encourage ideas of deconstruction and postmodernism to classic franchises to be shut down.
When Nerrel defended The Last Jedi, I think he put it best. To me, it's one of the greatest quotes in all of criticism, and it's something not just the Star Wars fanbase should live by. It's EVERYTHING people should live by regarding their franchises:
_"Regardless of how it turns out, this is a new chance at this. Instead of bringing the baggage and hostility of 'let's go see (such and such)!!!' try to think about how audiences felt about the birth of this series when it began. Relax your stranglehold and let the director have this franchise for a few hours. Forget about your demands and rule books and go on the journey THEY want to take you on. And if you give it that chance and still don't like it, by all means criticize it. But do it fairly, with the knowledge that it was made by human beings who worked themselves half to death to give you the best story they could."_
@@pacman5698 I agree man, at first I didn't like Homecoming but now after Infinity War, Endgame and Far from Home it all made sense to me and how story maintained to keep Peter Parker core intact in world of Iron Man and MCU is great feat...
Same thing happens with Batman, the moment Justice League comes into play Batman looses his realism as he has to catch up with league but important is to maintain the core of character...

I have a personal and emotional connection to the character of Spider-Man. No I’m not a kid who grew up with maguire but I grew up knowing the character, I watched all movies, read comics and it makes me cry. I suffer from clinical depression and I know I’m just a 13 kid but it hurts. I relate to the character, just a kid who can’t catch a break and feels the world is against them, but still tries to do the right thing, not because they want to, or because it makes them feel good, it’s because it’s their moral obligation to do the right things so others won’t suffer from their mistakes. It makes me tear all the time I reflect upon it. Spider-Man is my rock and I love the Holland adaptation best

I find your statement of Tony being the "answer" to Peter's anxieties, particularly of himself, to be fantastic.
It is a perspective that makes me love Far From Home, Peter not only lost the one thing that mitgated his anxieties and gave him a 'path to follow' but now the world wants him to pursue that path, of becoming "the new Iron Man" faster
Whats incredibly is how this is dealt with in the immediate narrative, Peter's Anxieties in the MCU interpretation are directly tied to his Spider Sense, which is an amazing choice as the story's villain in Mysterio, who to defeat, Peter needs his Spider Sense
Obvious parallels between MCU Mysterio and Tony Stark aside, It is beautiful that the answer to "I don't think I can be the next Iron Man" is Peter overcoming those feelings and choosing to take a stand be "the first Spider-Man"
It feels like Far From Home is almost a conclusion to the setup of MCU Spiderman, Homecoming - Infinity War - Endgame - FFH is MCU Peter's Iron Man 1-3
Another interesting thought is that Iron Man proclaims his identity to the world, but Peter claims his through an individual journey where he claims his identity for himself. Only to then that individual acceptance be stripped away by having his identity revealed to the world against his own accord
Your deep dive into FFH makes me love the movie more. It also makes me realize that people who think it's out of character for Spider-Man don't understand the character at all. They might not have been able to show Uncle Ben's death in the MCU and just teased it, but the very foundation of Spider-Man is guilt and his difficulty in letting go of the past. FFH is that struggle.
This was such a great essay. Tony and Peter have gone through so much and seeing how they depended on each other and how that harmed and helped them was so interesting to delve into.

I have a really strong personal attachment to peter and tony, the characters helped me come to grips with the reality of my cptsd and who I want to try and be now that I'm coming out of the traumatic events that led to me having it. they still help me figure things out every day. your videos are a really nice thing to watch, I love how you analyse both characters and their relationships to each other, and they bring me even more understanding of myself and why I'm so attached to these characters. I've always loved the way Peter Parker brought the best in Tony Stark. Tony is my favorite marvel character and I enjoyed seeing him mentoring a young hero. Their relationship was wholesome and I never understood the hate. Peter was never Iron man Jr. Loved your video essay.
Tying Stark's reversal of decision about the time heist back to Peter's summary of his life mission---- that is just brilliant, man. (And in my mind, the "When you can do the kinds of things that I can" soliloquy is the most perfect one- sentence summary of Spider-Man's origin that I have ever heard. [To me, it also directly implies the guilt and self-doubt that is discussed in the video] ).

@@candlemovies4180 I know that Strange says it was the "only way" for things to play out, but I can't help but think that Peter's freak out wasn't a requirement for beating Thanos, just an inevitability. No matter what happened in the future from Strange's time jump, Peter freaks out when they beat Thanos right there. I am fully convinced that had he kept his cool, they'd have beaten Thanos then and there, but he is Peter Quill and no matter what, his emotions control him in that moment and he freaks out. It was never possible for it to happen otherwise.

infinity war is a movie about ''hardest choices and strongest wills''. quill's will broke and he screwed up big time but he was definitely not alone in this.

It's the tech, the nepotism, tony living vicaruously through him without any meaningful clashing that ends in peter explicitly ordering him to stop. Their entire relationship is extremely out of character for both of them, we have tony trying to fuck aunt may and not get immediately rejected as he tries to do so only months after the loss of the love of her life(I've seen the divorce theories, that still counts), ned is a huge sucker for iron man in the avengers, his excuse for missing out on his personal life is a stark internship, it had been set up at day one tony is not the center of anyone's universe and it's a long running theme that a spiders' and especially Peter's web revolves around noone but themself.

i'm surprised over the lack of mention in "iron man 2" when tony saves that kid and says "nice shot kid" as it is later revealed to be peter parker. they need to do something about that scene for the next "spider-man" film.

This was fun, Leo! Great analysis. And I will admit my my jaw hit the floor when you made the point about Endgame Tony falling into Peter's reason to be Spider-Man! The realization that broke him out of his comfort zone and made him get off his laurels to fix the world. What a parallel! And with Tony now gone and the chance for him to become a better Spider-man, I am very, very interested to see where things go in SM3.
BTW, watching the end of this essay combined with Space Jam's comment about Peter "being the first Spider-Man" totally gave me flashbacks to Mike Myer's "The Love Guru" and Guru Pitka's anxiety-relieving realization that he did not need to be the next Deepak Chopra, but the first Guru Pitka! Wow, talk about unexpected synchronicity!

If people think about it, the reason why spider-sense doesnt work at the start of FFH but work like a charm in the end is embedded in Peter's ark himself. In the beginning, Peter Parker yearn for a break, and right after the events of Endgame, he feels like he's not up to the cosmic-sized events, especially made more sense when he felt guilty for the death of Iron Man. At this state of disbelieving in himsel, he unconciously loses his confidence and accordingly, his control over his spider-sense. However, after he learned to believe in himself that he is up to this big events and decide to step up and take down Mysterio on his own, he believes in his power again and as a pay off, he got his spider-sense back not out of nowhere but out of his belief in it, as made more clear by him saying " come on, Peter Tingle".

I enjoyed the extended Iron Man saga far more than comparable franchises because the writers spent time and effort building strong characters and meaningful relationships, and then the right actors were chosen to embody them. Every IP video makes me remember that, yes, there were these _people_ to watch, root for, laugh at, mourn, learn from, be inspired by. Real people in every sense except for being fictional.

I love this version because of not only because of Tom's performance but that fact that I my mind this version of Peter is Slowly being forced to grow up as the films go on
I don't have an issue with the Tech I especially love the Black and Red suit because he did make it himself. And yeah like Peter and Happy say "You're never gonna be Iron Man

I find it weird how Peter tries to relive and redo the past instead of learn and improve from it
Peter was trying to live the simpler life of 2016-2018 where Peter just had to worry about bank robbers, car stealers, burgulars, without being seen. Instead of living in a post blip world (2023-present), where people don't know who or what to trust, a world where Peter was not only still having PTSD from almost fell thousands of feet back to earth, fighting Thanos, the Chitauri and the outriders, being in the middle of Thanos' line of fire while carrying the Infinity gauntlet, his Spidey-Sense telling him that he was going to die, but also where the person who taught him the realities of being a "superhero" and how he can overcome them, who made him a Avenger, and who basically took him out of his own trauma of his parents dying and Uncle Ben dying, when he could've done something about it but didn't, had also died. Which world would you want him to live in?

You focus so much on trauma and it's impact. I'm sure this has been asked before, but, are you okay?
I'm sorry but I still can't buy it. This just seems like a watered down version of "with great power comes great responsibility" no matter how differently you try to phrase it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the MCU and this new interpretation of Spider-Man, but I simply find that it loses out on crucial components at the core of the character.
I never liked the MCU take on Spider-Man as it takes bits away what made Spider-Man unique. By bonding him with Iron Man strongly makes him less of individual character and more of a fanboy learning the hard way of being a hero. Now one may think that is what these films are telling us, but there are elements of Spider-Man that deserves to be both shown and told no matter what the character is. Uncle Ben being one of them.
Well Kevin feige confirmed his third Solo movie will be a Peter Focus movie so they will explore the stuff that makes people love Spiderman since Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy.

The contrast between Peter and Tony is simply not strong enough, I've seen the argument he's a genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist and peter is just a kid from queens but allow me to explain what those words with an abundance of syllables mean: Genius: A person who is exceptionally intelligent or creative. both peter and tony have expressed proficiency in several scientific branches, too many of which overlap, and a similar level of ingenuity. Billionaire: Definition is irrelevant it's the general idea of someone not needing to worry about making ends meet and further someone who can be excessive and not worry about it. Tony's self explanatory as he's explicitly been stated to possess billions of dollars but peter doesn't have to cut corners to make it through the day, even at the end of homecoming where they nearly had it. Playboy: A wealthy man who spends his time enjoying himself, especially one who behaves irresponsibly. Again Tony's self explanatory and we also have Peter being in the decathlon not out of obligation to anyone or to learn but for fun, who becomes iron man's lap dog not out of obligation or to learn anything but for fun, the climax of homecoming(followed by that abysmal ending) has it and most of avengers 3: the 3 hour clusterfuck almost gets it right until you notice it also happens to be the exact same time tony sets his selfish desire to have fun to save everyone so it only fuses them together more. I'm not saying that isn't the time for both of them to suddenly obtain laser focus, but it's also the only example we have of a situation peter is taking seriously and tony is not and it actually leads to conflict and the two of them being at odds. Philanthropist: A person who seeks to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donation of money to good causes. Tony's opening scene in civil war, Peter's opening scene in Far From Home, clearly doesn't matter to peter who's money it is and therefore it doesn't matter to us. They had their differences but both scenes treated the philanthropy itself like an afterthought and/or as a setting.
To anyone who read this comment I ask you to stay calm in a civilized manner because I have words that you may not agree with
All I see in this version of Peter/Spidey is a fanboy who only want an approval from his favorite idol (Tony), in Homecoming Peter said he want to help the "little guys" but does he mean it ?, Vulture and Mysterio ARE the little guys who got screwed by Tony. He doesn't show any empathy especially in FFH where he let Beck die.
And finally Edith, you know what Peter should've done after retrieving it from Beck.....he should've command it to initiate self destruct symbolizing that "he doesn't need Edith or Stark tech, he doesn't have to be like Iron Man.....he just have to be Spider Man, sure that's not what Tony want.......but that's what Peter want", imagine how mature and grown up Peter would be if that happened

If you want peter to do that with Edith, he would also indirectly: Waste millions of dollars that millions of people wasted trying to built that satellite, Waste a security system that could possibly save the world in the future from other unknown outside forces in space or own the earth itself, potentially harm billions of innocent people with several truck sized chunk loads of tech falling in several cities, and directly ignore and repeat his growth in homecoming (which kinda implies that YOU don’t understand his growth in this movie).......
