  • CORRECTION: the theorist is called Maurice Halbwachs, I accidentally put "Malbwachs" in the video.
    Loki is based on the true story of Pokey, a famous twitch streamer who was abdducted by aliens and sent to Mars for training for the Wars against the OPA. Then suddenly Pokey's brother Liam appears to save him moments before his execution, they travel through space and time together captuing Elephants and eating Pumpkins. Truly this is an emotional ride until out of nowhere a giant Ape appears and eats Liam. Pokey must avenge his brother by chasing this Ape back to his Ape house where his Ape kids lived. Pokey realises that even Apes have brothers, so he chooses not to attack the Ape and accepts that sometimes Apes get hungry.

    2:26 Maybe I'm reading too much into this but at Thor's ceremony in the first movie, Loki is on Odin's right. Odin right eye was taken (I believe in the battle against the Frost Giants). So, Thor is front and center, in his father's view while Loki is on Odin's right, his blindside. I wonder if that was deliberate.

I honestly don't know how they pull that off.

    I’ve never been a real fan of Loki as a character and even seeing his death in a theater didn’t make me emotional at first, just shocked. It’s now when I’m watching such analyses that I realize the depth and loss of Thor. Sibling themes always make me emotional, and I really feel for both of them, reflecting to my own experience. In a way there are two rather heartbreaking scenes through Ragnaryok: first for Thor, when he tosses this thing to Loki and says he could’ve hugged him but with such a sad voice. For me that shows, how he finally came to terms with his brother as his last family not reaching Thor’s expectations and letting him be, and it’s a hard realization if I may. Second is in the elevator scene, where Loki hears that Thor is ready to let him go, which shatters him as he’s just found some peace in himself and pleasure in his brother’s company.
    Like I said, it’s a devastating story for both participants, and I believe in it completely, because real life is in no way an easy thing.

    I would like to add that Scourge had a similar tragedy at the end of Ragnorak. He began as a braggart, progressed to a villainous coward that survived the entire movie, until he became the hero that the people of Asgard needed at that moment, and that is when he died.
    The entire Asgardian cast seems awash with characters who undergo redefinitions with very few exceptions. Even the wise Allfather Odin ends the trilogy looking like an old fool, no better nor worse than the rest of us, passing on his lessons of experience through his own failings.

    Not sure Loki ruling over Asgard and just putzing around is a retcon. He wanted war to prove himself to Odin, but in TDW, it's Odin who wants endless war and Thor calls him out for it. Him giving Thor the leave he wants while taking the throne as next in line is part of his arc. He loves being accepted for who he is filtered through the lens of heroism and is happier ending his ambitions there.

    The tipping point to Loki's descent to madness was him finding out that not only was he adopted he was also the son of the enemy, Laufey king of Jotunheim. Based on the first scene of the movie, they were seen as evil monsters in their history and also caused Odin to lose his right eye. It must have been heartbreaking for Loki to find out the truth especially since he always felt inadequate compared to Thor and now he knows why he was never going to measure up to him. Thor was the one who was worthy of Mjolnir, not him. He must have thought that the game of thrones was rigged because he was never a biological Asgardian but a Jotun by birth so he reasoned out that Odin lied to him. So, in his mind, in order for him to erase his biological roots destroying Jotunheim was his only option and he justified that it was for Asgard's sake as well.
    I see the scene where Loki refers to himself as "from Asgard" as him rejecting his Jotun blood. And in the Avengers, the gang doesn't know that Loki is a Jotun since it was never mentioned. It took a long time for Loki to accept himself so it was really meaningful when he referred to himself as "Odinson" in Infinity War.
    Loki was Jotun by birth but Asgardian, son of Odin and Frigga and brother to Thor, by heart.

    Loved your analysis of Loki and how you brought in Halbwachs and collective memory. If there is one thing I don't really agree with, it's that I really think you give Thor and Odin too much of a free pass. I think, to a certain extent, you are right to say that Loki is unable to see that Thor and Odin actually do love him (as Frigga says, he is "perceptive about everyone but himself"). Still, to paraphrase Thor, his "slights" are not completely "imagined". Odin is clearly partly responsible for creating the broken person that is Loki. The lie about his origin is a big mistake: Loki felt different all his life without knowing why, and was eventually traumatised by the revelation that all his worst fears were true (he was, in fact, literally "a monster"). And it is a very stupid thing to bring up two boys by telling them they are both meant to be kings, when clearly, this is not going to happen. Not to mention Odin's stupid and cruel "no" to Loki as he is contemplating suicide and reaches for his approval one last time. As for Thor, he claims that he "thought the world" of Loki in Ragnarok, but... if he did, he certainly did not act like it. In "Thor", there are several moments when Thor and his pals clearly show very little consideration for Loki (for ex, Thor's very harsh: "Know your place, brother!"). It certainly does not look like Loki was a valued and respected member of Thor's entourage. So, while I would agree that Loki has a distorted sense of his own identity and cannot see the sincerity in others, he clearly did not imagine the slights.

    The problem with Loki's death in Infinity War was that it wasn't an ending for him but simply a means to bring Thor to a low point. But that's not the ending the character deserved. Whether he died hero or villain, Loki has basically been a major character in the MCU from the very beginning. He was the first main antagonist for the Avengers. The Thor movies could easily be called the Thor and Loki movies. Him returning entering the fray against (or with) Thanos was something that would've brought a lot of things together. It would've been nice to see him act as a sort of Starscream for Thanos in the movie.
    But I do see why he was killed. Again, it is a little fitting seeing the new big bad take down the first big bad with relative ease. And it DOES bring Thor down more than any other death could've.
    But the scene was still so... not so great? It felt rushed and strange. Loki didn't behave like Loki. He's a trickster. He likes playing the long game. So, sure, he's developed and has been redeemed, so no one in the audience is gonna buy that he's actually betraying Thor again. But why would he go through the effort of trying to persuade Thanos only to try and stab him IN FRONT OF HIS FACE! It didn't make any sense at all. If Loki truly had to die this early in the film, it wouldn't have killed the directors to have Thanos turn his back or use the stones to trick Loki. Out-trick the trickster. Not that garbage of him trying to stab the dude who just kicked Hulk's ass right in the face with his guard clearly still up.

    • @nemowindsor8724
      @nemowindsor8724 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does make sense. Loki was performing again - as he always does. He's a character who 'acts'. In this instance, he played an obvious 'betrayer' in the hopes that Thanos would kill him and spare Thor. At least, that's what seemed apparent to me.

    • @ObaREX
      @ObaREX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nemowindsor8724 why would he assume that?
      Thanos never said he'd spare one or the other or even gave them reason to believe he would.
      Nor was that well communicated to the audience.
      If he truly believed Thanos was a man of honor, it would've just been better if Loki flat out told Thanos to kill him and spare his brother.

    • @officert5147
      @officert5147 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Bingo on why I felt unsatisfied with the scene. It felt like they went for impact over narrative sense. It just bugs me when a supposedly brilliant character is held down by an unimaginitive script. Loki is meant to be an expert manipulator, he is THE liesmith, but this scene's script makes him so strangely bad at it. I wish I believed it was meant as a deliberate sacrifice but it doesn't come across that way.
      Imho the writers got a little carried away with the brutality and edginess of Thanos winning constantly. It breaks the mold to have Loki's death as such an abrupt cold open. However it also cuts his character arc down immediately after a turning point and portrays him as a poor liar. Can't get much more unsatisfying than that :/

    • @fightingmedialounge519
      @fightingmedialounge519 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well loki has worked thanos before so it's safe to assume he would know how honorable he is just like thanos would know not to give loki a second chance. Also I feel like because he was so important his death needed to perfectly represent his character arc; trying and failing to be something he's not.

    I believe that the Loki We see dying at the hands of Thanos is the Loki from the upcoming Loki streaming show on Disney +. He switched places with the Loki in Ragnorak, so as to save himself. The Loki who dies is the one who has been on a kind of emotional/time/space pilgrimage, and has come to realize his true self. I also think, in his travels with the tesseract, he may have influenced certain goings-on, while The Avengers were trying to obtain the Infinity Stones, to fix what Thanos did, 5 years earlier...ultimately aiding them, and making Their mission a success. That would be a great way to tie-in Loki's history in The MCU. Also, this way, the Loki from Ragnorak can time jump 5 years or more in to the future, to witness Thanos' destruction...only to join his Brother, Thor, on new adventures.

  • @hopesy12u4

    He wasnt treated fairly by Thor or his father. It's not just his "skewed" perception of himself and the people around him. We see him on the fringes because he was on the far fringes. Would love to see a video validating Loki's hardships from you. What happened to him WAS unfair. His upbringing WAS unfair. His father promised him a throne that he was never going to give.
    Loki's resentment of Thor and his father is valid. the first movie pretty much shouts this at the audience. Your essay excuses Thor's and Odin's actions, and you ought to be more critical of them.
    Edit: why is it that it is in Loki's head, the "imagined slights"? Why didnt you even consider that they werent imagined at all. When Odin finally called them his sons, why didnt you consider that it was Odin who has changed and who has "arced" out of being a shit to his adopted son?
    Just consider that Loki wasnt "imagining slights" in the next video you make about him and Asgard. It would balance the biases against him in this one.
    Edit2: it's like you're analzying Loki from Thor's sympathetic, but not really remorseful, perspective. A Thor that hasnt yet acknowledged that he is to blame for many "imagined slights". Or an Odin who hasnt yet come to terms with his own failures failures as a father. You are speaking from these perspectives.
    Rewatch the first movie without the "it's all in Loki's head" lenses on, and you'll see that Odin and Thor arent as saintly as you paint them here.
    Frigga is the only person who actually saw him. He WAS marginalized by nearly everyone else, including his brother and father.

    • @nemowindsor8724
      @nemowindsor8724 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      john smith I’d agree, but Frigga was far from ideal. She tried to manipulate Loki by tying her identity as his mother explicitly to making him acknowledge Odin as his father and she refused to take responsibility for the choice to keep the truth from Loki, preferring to foist all responsibility and blame on Odin. She didn’t offer what Loki needed after Odin fell asleep in the first film either - she was as blind as anyone else to his needs. I think these flaws make Odin, Thor and Frigga much more interesting and dynamic characters and I do think painting their viewpoints as the “correct” ones robs them of their complexity. Thor in particular often has his most interesting flaws sanded off or ignored and it’s a disservice.

    I just watched your Black Widow one (Good job, BTW. I actually understand why she pursued Bruce, and why he rejected her now) and they mirror each other. Both of them, mirror other characters, and derive their identities from them. Odinson, Prince of Asgard, Brother of Thor (He's adopted) herald of Thanos... He never really develops an identity of his own, his goals to be King, Conqueror, or just Brother, all reflect that, his purpose: To find one.

    I've come to watch this after Loki the series came out. And honestly he just feels out of character. We see so much development throughout these movies that doesn't exist in loki the series. To me, the show feels like they regretted killing Loki, because we've already seen his journey, so seeing them trying to explore his character again (with less depth, as there's no thor/odin/frigga) is weird.

      I think that a lot of people miss that point. Theoretically, anyone who gets to Valhalla is never truly lost.
      Also, when he tried to stab Thanos, the knife was in the LEFT hand. Loki is normally RIGHT handed. Previously, only a fake Loki created by him as a magical diversion would use the left. So is he really as "dead" as we are meant to believe?

    Everyone loves a reformed sinner and considering Loki is the God of Lies, it will interesting to see the upcoming alternative take on him coming to grips with his own evil actions, inability to be honest, and self-hatred. Though he is supposedly under the influence of Thanos when he terrorizes and murders hundreds of humans and destroys much of NYC, it does not let him off the hook for his many past misdeeds. In the original timeline, he pays with his life (can he really be killed?). His TV alternative self may be redeemed without sacrificing his life, while still getting the comeuppance he deserves. I think Phil Coulson should get a few licks against him as well. I also hope he finds peace with being a mini Frost Giant. There is certainly a history between Laufey and Odin we don't know about.

    You keep saying Loki wanted to be king but he never actually wanted at least that was never his end goal. Loki wanted to belong and he wanted to be equal to Thor but power was always a means not end for Loki. Like, being king was the way he tried to prove himself not the other way around.

    Loki, unlike Thor, makes mistakes, but he learns from his mistakes and develops as a person. If Loki had the proper upbringing, he could be the perfect ruler, able to create heaven on earth. But after all, Thor was born from the blood of a ruler father, this is much more important ... This is a very good allusion to the real world, in which naive children and relatives of powerful people receive privileges, and really capable and talented people, by virtue of their origin, do not have access to power and are not able to create a much more pleasant world for society ...

    Who's your favourite villain of all time? Mine's Loki from the MCU. Not very original, but let me explain.
    When we first meet Loki in the first Thor movie, we're not meant to think much of him. He's the least well-liked of Thor's group of friends.He is an outcast. Then, he learns why everyone hates him, he's a frost giant. An outsider. One of the enemies. He doesn't take it well, but who would? Then, he tells Thor that their father is dead. Loki lied so he could stay king and all-father, thus fianally getting the respect he has been denied for so long. He tries to lift mjolnir, which shows that he's a villain... but I sometimes just feel bad for Loki when I watch that scene. Then, when he realises he is being betrayed by Heimdall, he sends someone to attack his own brother, Thor. trully, a villainous deed.. and yet... we know why he's doing it. Not agree with the action, but know why he did it. He then lets his biological father into attack his adoptive father just so he can kill his biological father to impress his adoptive father. Then, he fights Thor in an epic battle which really shows off his newfound villainous flair and, sadism. It was fun to watch. You could argue Thor putting his hammer mjolnir on Loki to end the fight was kind of a cheat he used to win a fight he otherwise couldn't have won, but my Dad disagrees with that. It was kind of a cheat.In order to save Jotunheim, Thor has to destroy the bifrost, stopping him from being able to see the woman he loves. Sure, i n Avengers he comes back to midguard/Earth and sees her in Thor: the dark world. When Loki says "I could have done it father! For You! For all of us!", Odin responds with "No, Loki..." and Loki-in my interpretation of events-attempted suicide by falling to what he thought was his death I feel really bad. I wrote it in that grammar because I rewatch the movie a fair bit and I was quite young so I don't remember it the first time too well.
    And that was just his first appearence.
    In avengers Loki is just villainous flair and sadism almost all the way through, apart from when he breifly expresses remorse about his action and when Hulk beats the snot out of him in a hilairous scene, which I love. Loki also almost gets the avengers to destroy themselves.
    I would comment about his appearences in other MCU movies, but in thor the dark world he's really more of a anti-hero and in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame he a straight up hero.

    When Odin said: "You are both born to be king" - LIAR! Why create motivation in Loki for an aspiration that will never be realized?!?!? In order to "save him from the truth" blah blah blah, if you lie for the good of someone, lie to the end! Why start such a conversation in the presence of both of them, why motivate your adopted son, strive to achieve what you will not allow him to achieve?!!!! The way Odin easily and confidently tells both of them, already knowing who exactly will be the ruler, demonstrates neglect and the fact that he uses his adopted son as an artificial obstacle for his own, false rivalry, a test. Odin turned Loki into a tool to motivate Thor, given that Loki is very sensitive and insightful, he could not help but notice this, and this, in turn, provoked him to respond in the form of hatred, due to his own imperfection complex, he did not I could feel differently - Odin is to blame for everything !!!! he's a lousy father!
