There's something about being in nature that makes us feel more comfortable and at peace with ourselves rather than being indoors. Our adventurous spirit never dies! Wishing you safe and warm travels, Shoestring.
That's the awesome thing about Shoestring's videos. You kind of get lost in watching all of his adventures. You also admire the level of freedom he has and observing the beautiful countryside go by as he rides the rails. And then there are those quiet moments when he goes on a hike down the tracks, talks to the camera while builds a fire in a secluded wooded area, sets up camp for the night, or in the beginning of this video, where he's standing next to the rails as snow falls all around him. There's a certain peace and tranquility to all of that. I also find it quite admirable that, despite being maimed and having poor eyesight and hearing, he never feels sorry for himself and doesn't let his personal setbacks stop him from satisfying his soul. God puts people like him on this earth for a reason, and we find out what that reason is by simply observing, listening and taking it all in. God bless you Shoestring, and keep doing what you do like only you can!
Hang in there, Michael. God never sends us more than we can handle. Lord knows, I've had some tough times in my life! I have this therory: Do you know the Greek word "hubris"? I think God sends me tough times as a way to "cut me down to size" when my huhbris causes me to forget who's really in control!
I understand what you’re saying about the rhythm when you’re on the train. I did two tours with Ringling Brothers and I slept so well when we were moving from town to town. I also loved taking my barstool out into the vestibule between the cars and opening the top half of the door and watching the world go by.
I was with Disney on Ice F.C.P. for a few years. The only way I could sleep on the buses was on the floor. I thought of joining the circus for summer work.
I'm the oldest of 12 children and my dad would always take us on a vacation almost every summer choose somewhere where we could stay with a relative and maybe drive an hour or so to the beach or the mountains. And even though we were all crowded an Volkswagen bus because Dad would turn the middle seat around so Mom could store luggage behind it there was very little legroom I never went on vacation with all 12 of us because my youngest brother was born when I was at Penn State. So it was tough sitting there legs to legs and we weren't seatbelt it in in those days but it was so easy to fall asleep to the sound of the traffic that we passed and the rhythm of the car. A couple of my brothers when they're babies were cranky would take them for a ride in the car and they fall asleep and wouldn't wake up when they were taken in the house and slept through the night. So there's something to that rhythm and that sound that helps you go to sleep! Thanks for sharing

Your way of life combines the outdoorsman, historian, documentarian, with a side of Zen social misfit tossed in. I totally get your craving for the physical-audio stim. These days I listen to rail sounds and imagine that physical shaking, helps me get to sleep.
I really appreciate your opening up to us. Understanding the hows & whys are interesting. I do understand what you said about the vibration frequency as I live on a boat. Don’t think I could sleep without the rocking & the sound of water splashing. Take care

Brother and I been talking about doing hobo camp for the people living in Denver. Put them on the south bound out of town to crew change spot. We pick them up with golf cart and take them to camp for burn barrel fire and hobo camp stories. If you get out of line we sick the hobo camp dog on you. Take you back on Sunday after noon. Give you a stick with red bandana on the end with a bologna sandwich for the trip back to the yard in Denver for their day job.
Hey Shoestring I’m glad I found your channel. I really like that knife your Dad got you. You just gave us some exceptional video footage of some beautiful countryside. I saw how you like stickers. I’ve got some someplace. I’ll try to find them. I’m a retired locomotive engineer and got several from different RR’s, so if I will find them or I will find some others and send them to you. You take care my friend and our prayers are with you.
I feel the same way you do about trucking. There are more of us that drive truck than ride rails around the country but it still more that won’t then will. Like you said, about “it takes a particular mindset or the way you process fun and n pain”. Most people drive truck for six months or so and give it up. It’s like a paid camping trip everyday. I’m a 20 year veteran and I scratch my head some days as to why I do it but when I’m away from it I miss it. Something about being out on your own doing your own thing watching the scenery go by getting a sense of freedom and then realizing that you’re doing a small part in something that is bigger than me. What other thing, you are correct that freight never stops moving. During Covid when I was out on the highways I would travel through big towns in there because no cars whatsoever in the middle of the day. Only trucks. It was a great sense of awareness that was going on and all of us drivers. It was surreal and we took notice it had great reference as to what we were doing to keep the country going while we were on lockdown. No trains, no trucks,no eating. Oh! I’ve taken a few pictures I think you would like on my travels I’d like to send you. How can I send you electronic pics?

So later on in my tramp, I found (Sweet) a pair of insulated Carhartt coveralls, I called them my walking sleeping bag. I could get off the train roll them up and have clean street clothes. Even in the hot summer you could get a little protection from the flying blood suckers. When I had wait time I'd "Read the camp trash". I see Bugler packs, OK so there's Bugler near by. I see 40's so there's beer near by.

Shoestring your awesome! I just started watching your videos and have to say I absolutely love them. Love watching you explore America, and learning things from you. I can tell you have an adventurous wonderful soul. Keep doing you man. 🤘🏻
I'm feeling the excitement of making the catch myself. Outstanding video Shoestring!
I can’t lie my dude, I watch your videos while I’m doing tedious little things at work, I wear headphones and one of the best little secret bonuses to you videos are the little camera creaks and other noises. I love them.
It's a good day when there's a new Shoestring video. Glad to see you're doing well.
Thats cool you were in the Army...great personality and channel
It’s hard to explain why I enjoy this type of content, maybe it’s because I wish I could be there having your back and drifting across America with you. 👍🇺🇸
I sort of appreciate someone out there keeping a small portion of history alive.
Fact
Your way of life combines the outdoorsman, historian, documentarian, with a side of Zen social misfit tossed in. I totally get your craving for the physical-audio stim. These days I listen to rail sounds and imagine that physical shaking, helps me get to sleep.
If you're ever in Mount pleasant, Iowa there's an antique store on the square that has a lot of old stuff from a railroad company
I really appreciate your opening up to us. Understanding the hows & whys are interesting. I do understand what you said about the vibration frequency as I live on a boat. Don’t think I could sleep without the rocking & the sound of water splashing. Take care
He's alive!! 👏
When your first showing the tracks @ 1:13 into the vid that’s my house. Crazy how small the world is I randomly came across your videos and seen this one
"Conjunction Junction what's your function?"

I am 59 and I still catch myself singing that song in my head. Loved Schoolhouse Rock ❤
RIP Shoestring.
Hey Shoestring. Great video. I am as well a Nam Vet. Rotor wing Uh and Chinooks you were talking about Rucker and Eustice. WS stationed st both. Your comments about rythem was so very right on I recall the feelings of the rotors spooling up and how the felt. Good luck brother stay safe and warm.
“No trains really run on a schedule “. Ain’t that the truth

miss your videos shoestring you are one tough guy.no more adversity bad breaks bad luck, you are in a much better place may God bless you and give you more than this earth did.
My wife just said Don't make me hear him, put on your headphones. Hobo, I will be joining you soon.
I use to pull the old I'm running down to the store for a pack of smokes I'll be right back! Then I'd take off for week or two usually lay low down the river fishing and drinking massive amounts of beer till I got my mind rite again to where I'd be able to act domesticated for little while again and repeat as needed!
My wife said that, ...She didn't see me for 3 days. .....On the 3rd day the swelling went down just enough she could see me.....LOL
Thats funny. I'm sure we could fill that box car with all the wives saying that
Amazon has the glow in the dark paint sticks for $15.74
@@StumpfsCurse as if controlling wives isn’t domestic violence. Weird how it’s turned into this ongoing joke about asking permission from the wife and being owned by her or that she has all the money. Most men talk like this, it’s so damn weird.
Shoestring I'm glad to see you making long videos. It doesn't matter if there short or long we love your stories and the knowledge you give in your videos. Stay safe and warm 💚
Your the man Shoestring!
Love this. I knew a few hoppers that'd make it up to nyc years back. Miss you Joel, wherever or whenever you are.
Shoestring says his favorite ride is a double barrel grainer but his face said ‘jackpot’ with that open box car!
Hello from Nelson New Zealand. Love the raw honestly of these videos shoestring when I was a kid we used to ride the log train from kinleath to putaruru to see our Grandma log trains are the nz equivalent of lumber in the us
Brother and I been talking about doing hobo camp for the people living in Denver.
Always a relaxing show and an adventure! God Bless you Shoestring!
When I leave the city, it feels like I can breathe again.
Thank you for sharing, I love trains because my father worked on the Milwaukee Road. Also thank you for picking up the trash in nature.
Welcome aboard!
Thank you
I feel the same way you do about trucking.
Hey shoestring, when you post your videos, you should tag train hopping like where you post the title it will give you options for tags. That way when people search videos on here yours will come up in the searches with the right tags. Maybe get more views this way. Just a thought.
Thank you for your service Shoestring. I was a 19d trained at Ft Knox Kentucky. If you ever hit the Seattle Tacoma area I will take you out for lunch and we can talk. I bet you have the best stories. God bless you brother.
When they leave the boxcars open seems like they are sending an invitation to ride.
Its like a Vacancy sign at a motel.

This man is the perfect example why you don’t judge a book by it’s cover. So much depth for such a simple life.
I agree. If we all would just take the time to communicate with each other, we just might learn something.....valuable.
Your comment comes from a source of judgment.... doesnt it? Yes... it does. Peace.
Hey Bob...your judgmental comment seems a bit out of place, about someone who is stating an opinion....right?
Of course. Lol.
Nice knife Mark! Stay warm
Thanks for your service sir! You stay warm and safe out there. Looking forward to more video from this trip.
Also love to hear the stories of past rides.
Best wishes for a smooth ride Sir.
You are though as a cut spike 😎
Our friend Shoestring rides in style; traveling parts of America we'll never see from the highways.
Been watching for a while, and it still boggles my mind how you do this, now sleeping outside in the winter like Game of Thrones.
You're an amazing person, keep on keepin' on!
Well my birthday is close, July 14th... Must of been a COLD November...!!!
Hi i am from south African in a small town called Grahamstown. I really am enjoying your youtube show.
26:23 the unmistakable sound of slippin & grippin
Just what I was hoping for in this quiet sunday afternoon :)
Yeah, he's a modern day outlaw, lol
I enjoyed your video...its beautiful.....take care wishing you the best
So later on in my tramp, I found (Sweet) a pair of insulated Carhartt coveralls, I called them my walking sleeping bag. I could get off the train roll them up and have clean street clothes. Even in the hot summer you could get a little protection from the flying blood suckers.
When I had wait time I'd "Read the camp trash". I see Bugler packs, OK so there's Bugler near by. I see 40's so there's beer near by.
Wow, that was a close one at the end!! At least the weather looks nice there. We got about 2 or 3" of fresh snow this morning, here in south eastern PA, Monday.
57:59 is a long video. I watched it all, Shoestring is that fascinating...
This is a man at peace !! Love it Shoestring !!
Shoestring there is a pilot store just a little ways down the street from where you are if you need something
Yeah usually that's where I gear up with food and water every time. They sell more gas there than anywhere I've been... lol
@@TheHoboShoestring I miss the old burger place that closed up. It was right there close to where you took that video
As a man who wears and absolutely adores that same Carhartt cover all, I'm so so glad you have one of those
I wish I had $10 for every time that you say “but”.
I wish I had $20 for every time that you say “anyway”.
But, anyway... I love you Hobo Shoestring!!! - Armchair Traveller
Love your stories! Stay safe, healthy & warm. God bless ya!
