On the morning of April 19, 1775, the American Revolution began with the "shot heard 'round the world".
An excellent portrayal of the event that sparked the American Revolution from an idea to a shooting war - a 1988 adaptation of the classic novel by Howard Feast which takes place at the dawn of the America ideals for Liberty. Superstitious teenager Adam Cooper (Chad Lowe) struggles to gain the approval of his intellectual and devout Christian father, Moses (Tommy Lee Jones). When a lone rider warns the locals of approaching British troops, Adam surprises his father by joining the local militia. But Adam will have to come of age rapidly amid violence and death to survive the Battles of Lexington and Concord.
First aired on April 24, 1988.

The US public school I attended abandoned teaching History for "Social Studies" back in 1973, and Geography and Weather too. Parents were none too pleased with those changes. Private schools *might teach history, the one I later attended did.

Ephriam Harrington, my ancestor, fought that morning. His cousins were on the Green. I obtained a half penny dug up at the old bridge site. I share it when ever I can at Living History events.

Yes, I know. A total of 7 of my ancestors fought in the war for independence. Four from SC, 1 from MD and 2 from PA. Of the 4 from SC, it was my 7th great grandfather and his 3 sons. One of his sons were killed by Indians allied with the British. One son was captured by the British but was released by Lord Cornwallis’s troops in a prisoner exchange in Yorktown. The other son after the war migrated to the new State of Kentucky and became the 7th Governor of Kentucky. Adair County, Kentucky is named for him.

I have an ancestor, Moses Barnes, who fought as part of the minuteman/militia units who harassed the British all the way back to Boston. He was 72 years old and shouldered his musket to fight the British that day.
He ended up living to the ripe old age of 88. Unheard of to live that long in those days… RIP Moses, you brave Patriot!
My ggggreat grandmother Annie McKinney Musick Hatfield survived her husband being scalped n killed in their home in 1792 Virginia..She and her 5 children were abducted by the Shawnee.A posse was raised and got them back within a day after a battle.She later married a widower in the posse Ephraim Hatfield who was the patriarch of the later famous clan. She raised her 5,his 3 and they had 5 more children.She lived to be 104. She has a monument to her life in Pike co. Kentucky.A book was written about her called" the starched apron" by Doris Musick

I read this book when I was a teenager. I loved the story then, and I loved this movie. It stayed very true to the book.
Howard Fast was a real good writer,you should read more of his stuff..

Check out the series John Adams (2008, HBO) it focuses more on the political machinations and it's the best one in my opinion.

Yes I have seen George Washington ABC Mini Series 1984. I watched it back then. As I worked as a docent, a volunteer (no pay😢) I worked at Liberty Hall a non profit in Sonora Calif 95370. They were open for only two years. Every Friday & Saturday morning from 10:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. I had to start up the DVD player on George Washington.
Then ABC made part 2 in 1987. The Bill of Rights 1791. Explaining each Amendment and how they (the founders) drafted those words based on historical facts
from England, past abusive Kings toward their people.
As a baby boomer (1945 to 1964) you will recognize all the Actors and Actresses who gave there very best in acting out what took place on the Lexington Green 209 years later.
All those brick buildings from the right of the screen were part of a Church.
The mens beliefs in this congregation "We shall not" go against the "King" only if blood has been shed on our end. 73 men stood casualty on the Lexington Green with there long rifles...
What a great movie, it is hard to get a movie dealing with the American Revolution today which is a shame....

“Friend, there aint a road in Massachusetts today that don’t lead to British graves”. What a badass line.
I loved that line, but not for its machismo, for its accuracy. The whole countryside literally erupted and vomited forth armed men like Vesuvius vomited lava. The Brits did try to evade the path they knew would be impeded, but the road they took went through a fair sized little town, and by chance the only 'general' in the militia happened to be going through that town (trying to get to Concord) when people came riding in saying the Brits were coming, so he started grabbing men and telling them to defend the town, and as he was doing that, hundreds of men from farther away also were passing through trying to find out where the war was. And that is where they found it. Look it up. It was a unique day, in the Revolution, and maybe in all history. An army of chaos prevailed over the most disciplined infantry on Earth, and with no one above Captain anywhere except briefly in that one town, and him acting like a sergeant with almost no one even knowing who he was at all. He never had time to tell them he was a general, and possibly they obeyed him better because they didn't know..
At their maximum strength in this conflict the British never had more than 16,000 second rate soldiers in the conflict, the US Army of COngres, with reserves and every thing numbered the best of 500,000

I can't imagine the feelings those men felt on that day, as the British approached. I am grateful for their courage.
They were dug in, the Britsh approached them going UP HILL, wikth 80 poun packs on their back, the rifle of them days needed time to load and under fire going UP hill they only had ONE shot to get off, then they had to charge, so they were forced DOWN the hill twice due to these dreadful tactics but having lost most of their senior officers one junior officer orderded them to take their packs off and RUN up the hill, no shots, just a dirct charge with bayonets, the Americans had LOADERS for their weapons so DID not run out of ammuntion and had cover and ample time to fire on them, but the British prevaled with tremendous losses, but it is NOT how you think ! At their peak in this war there were only 16, actual British troops, there were German troops there too, but only 16,000 Britsh, The Army of Congress, with ALL forces numbered the best part of 500,000 I know you will say that NO MORE than 48,000 seved at one time, but this does NOT include mitiliia, which OFFICIAL records put at 145,000 plus irregulars as well as reserves, which put the figure well over 300,00 which CAN BE CHECKED , h owever even these figures are a bit rubbery and in actual fact there were about 470.489 THOUSAND ready for battle if needed. The so called CENSUS of 1766 was not an accurate count as it could never be in those days and the population was probably more like 5 million than the offical figure of 2.5 million as this did not take into account indentured servants, Indians and others in the community , including lack of accuracy in getting every one IN the census.

There are a handful of wars that were truly justified. This was one of them. Freedom is never free. No one should be subjected to a life of slavery. The Rule of Law is vital to freedom.

Thousands of Germans were hired by the British to fight in the war. Many of them stayed in the colonies after the war. They were productive citizens and helped to forge a new nation.

Actually they did not have to fight and three out of four wanted to stay with Britain but as in these things the minority were prepared to use consilidated force at any one time in this "war" the maximum amount of British troops numbered no more than 16,000 while the Congressional army numbered nearly 500,000. The terrorist were the Americans.

Good movie, I'm currently working on my Colonia 58 Cal smooth bore Flintlock.
This movie inspired me to replicate the Coopers Salt Box home. We built it in 1995, large fireplaces and all..

Great book, great production..but New England doesn't look like that in April, it's much more gray and sparse, you can't do much in April except get ready for May...
...and it rained heavily that day and then a cold front came in. There were no leaves on the trees!!
Someone complained about the pace, but that is pretty much how it happens when life altering events take place. And it would have been the longest day in the life of that young man, and embedded in his memory as if it had happened just yesterday. The day he took his father’s place at the head of the table.
In memory of todays date - I hope America find his way back to that days when they fought for peace,independence and home rule! Not the way they did the last 60 Years figthing for capitalism and not for freedom and self ruling as they did before ! Like Patton says My biggest fear is that after the war against the nazis-the military complex will gain to much power over the politics,and the next wars we fight we fight for their profit! (maybe for that he did in an ``accident`` in germany! )

Bravo! Very well done. The Disney film JOHNNY TREMAINE also covers many of the issues very well--although it puts the Sons of Liberty in a better light than history does. Also see THE AGE OF REVOLUTION (vol. 3 of THE HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLES) by Winston Churchill. He had relatives on both sides of the Revolution, and he has an interesting viewpoint. He was a master of the English language, and he's a pleasure to read.

I'm somewhat encouraged that so many liked this movie, given its less than sensational pace or scenes. I must admit I found it a bit underwhelming but liked it overall for most of the reasons stated here.

@@jwkennington IMO Those 3 Battles, Cowpens, Kings Mountain and Guilford Courthouse, was the Death Knell of British forces in America..A Lot of Truly Great Men and Women made SURE the Redcoats were NEVER able to re-supply themselves from "sympathetic" Carolinians...My Family still lives in the area.. very sad that most people aren't aware of these Great Events that made This Great Land!

Being a brit i can say our boys were a force to be reckoned with, but it took real guts to stand in that line and see what was coming at them the best trained army of the time, they were farmers and tradesmen they shouldnt have been there but they were and started what would become the war that ended with americas freedom, although i ask are you still free? love to all.
A sad question to hear today, for sure, because the answer is yet sadder.

The best trained army of the time was the Prussian.
WHAT a load of b-ll-x. A significant number of Americans had valuable combat experience in the French & Indian War (7 Years War); including George Washington.
A different kind of war to fighting in Europe: the climate, the untamed terrain, the bloodthirsty biting midges, & then of course the American rebels.
From the UK - with American family (my late eldest sister married a WW2 vet), I wonder how America
might have fared had the Crown retained control over there in those tumultuous times, Freedom can
be a twisty largely undefined road to travel. How, I still wonder, would America look today?
Missed some good parts. Like when Revere was captured and the militia got bored of standing around`and discharged their weapons so they could go to the tavern and wait. When they discharged their weapons Revere who was just down the road bluffed the patrol that captured him telling them it was several hundred troops marching towards them and the patrol fled, and then he went to the tavern. The Adam kid was annoying. The bridge battle would have been cool to see with the irregulars and the guys on the hill shooting down on the red coats.
The Redcoats were far too clean. They were cold wet and dirty from having to wade waist deep through water and mud in a swamp where the navy boats dropped them off and having to eat bug ridden rations the navy provided and then marching miles in the dark. To this day they still havent figured out who fired first. There were a lot of really interesting side stories for this battle. You had the crazy old 80+ year old retired redcoat who decided to take on the entire red coat column by himself killed a couple and was shot and bayonetted 11 times, lived and then married a twenty-something year old woman. There's a marker commemorating him along that road.

@@karencarter8292 While normally that would make sense and I would agree, there were no fields, just a little overgrown grassy area before the woods started. Plus I think if it was rocks from this, they would have ended up more like bocages like in France where farmers generationally just tossed the rocks into eventual long piles of hill along the sides of their fields. (and yes, I totally believe I am being way to nit picky about a very minor point :P )

This movie brought a human side to the historical facts that have been written down in history about April 19th, 1775 the beginning of American Freedom
I had never seen this movie before. Having read diaries and letters written by the participants (Read: Rebels and Redcoats, a compilation of original documents from the time), I realize this movie, while well intentioned, was made subject to the snowflake sensitivities of the post-Vietnam era. In a real household of that time, the lad would have come home to see his father laid out on the dining room table, he would only _possibly_ be on the bed if he had been still alive when brought in. Beds were not easily replaced, and a widow must also sleep somewhere, maybe for many years.
The people of that era were also, especially in the area near Boston, very determined. When the British drew near, the possibility of withdrawing _was_ mentioned. Captain of militia John Parker, a farmer IIRC, shut that down, saying, "If they mean war, let it begin here". None fled until a British volley mowed down more than a dozen of the patriots. And by the way, it was a travesty for the movie to show someone as being responsible for 'the shot heard round the world'. In real life, the question was investigated to exhaustion during and after the Revolutionary War. no one ever found out who really fired it. Coming far off from one side would probably have been noticed. The militiamen were firm in saying it was none of them, The Brit officers present limited themselves to saying it was no one from their unit, so the movie creates s fictional character to take the blame or credit. It should rightly have been left unexplained.
By the way, firebrand Sam Adams was watching the whole thing from a second floor window about a block away, and has been mentioned as a possible subject, but he had only a pistol, and many present would have recognized a pistol shot as opposed to musket or fowling piece _as well as noticing the shot came from a distance_.
Still, the movie seems to intend a patriotic and truthful portrayal, and so I applaud it.
One thing I notice in a lot of older war movies and series, is that the British are hollywoodized to be these mindless evil waves of men, but having more perspective as well as depicting actual skirmisher tactics. This also doesn't stand to focus for a long time on a single battle as many modern films would but demontratres the hit n run tactics used against the British over the course of several hours as well as the exhaustion of both sides.
All very good - but just one nit picky thing - Fully grown foliage in late April in Massachusetts? It's still early spring, grass may be greening up, but trees would be just budding. And you're still fair game for a snow flurry.
I remember seeing this when it first came out on TV. Was good then and better now, as the young don't know their history. Though this gives a possible answer to who fired the shot. I counted at least 4 different regimental uniforms, with the light and grenadier (bear skin hats) companies from each, 100 men per company, that's 800 of the 1500 there that day.
That number of regiments you counted might be proper. Gage had stripped the 'light infantry' and grenadiers of many regiments to form what we would call a 'special task force' for that mission. Supposedly there were only 700+ men total though (not including the relief force).

We watched this in multiple grades through school
I recall watching this when it first aired. Nice to see it again. Looks like it was filmed in Canada which is to bad, there are many locations in MA that would have represented the area better. Looking at this from the point of view of living not that far from the actual locations, it just looked off, but a minor complaint, this is dated, but very entertaining. I always liked Robert Urich, Tommy Lee and Susan Blakely.

Loading shot onto powder with no wad... that's going to work well.. Welcome to old movies I guess. The funny part is the counting the shot scene is the one thing I remember about this movie.

@@josephpadula2283 Among other things, yes. But consider all of the other things that are now "crimes" in the new world order. Remember the little 7 year old girl who was hauled away in handcuffs by the cops for setting up a lemonade stand? What about the "crime" of carrying a Bible into a public school building? We're not even talking about preaching from it or putting it on the table and reading it, just simple possession of it is enough to be expelled, fined, jailed, etc. Then there's seat belts, jaywalking, playing the guitar and singing on the street corner without permission from the king, digging a hole in your own yard, working on an old car, or feeding the birds, washing the sidewalk with the hose, Hell in my part of the country, it's illegal to park on the freaking dirt!
Dust is illegal in the damn desert! The list goes on and on. Every person you ask can add 100 more items to this list.
It brings tears to my eyes and makes me sick to my stomach to think of the millions of guys who have fought and died since April 19, 1775 to keep us free to enjoy these simple freedoms and pleasures without being dictated to by some little clipboard Nazi whose primary goal is to pick our pockets, but also crush our souls and drive us into the house to stare at a screen all day.
