I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your absolutely raw, honest take on Tales of the Shire. I had the exact same feeling about Fae Farm but still played that one a good amount before dropping off. I cannot wait for this cozy game but I agree with your sentiment about the mobile-esque blob graphics. I would love for higher quality graphics - closer to Fable or Disney Dreamlight Valley - in a cozy game like this. I do love the idea of a cozy game with light low-stakes questing but no combat. Still very excited for Tales of the Shire and I'll definitely play - glad they're ensuring game release will maintain integrity with the delay, but kinda sad I won't be cozy by the fire at Christmastime exploring the Shire.
Mature feeling is a good way to put it, I don’t want to feel like I’m playing a toddlers game 😢
wokeys are toddlers and they are their target audience
I love it when liss remembers to feed us in her basement with new content.
I totally agree with the style of the characters!! I think they look very unappealing and blobby. I am obsessed with lotr but yeahh I'll have to see about this game. I am slightly upset ab the pushback, but like you said i think it was important to. I'm feeling very mixed ab this game :/
You're not being mean. You're being a critic, which is kinda your job. Idk how we got to be in this "well its like not my thing but if you like it then it's great!!!!!"-ass world but don't apologize for being knowledgeable in your field and finding things bad/ugly. Game devs aren't babies, they're professionals. They can take it.
No because lets talk about it. For an academy award winning VF company who has worked on dune, avatar and lord of the rings to release something that looks like a clunky mobile game just seemed disappointing. IMO this started as a cash grab with the rise of popularity in cozy games and they thought they'd release something easy, but after seeing the very valid fans criticism of the graphics they've seemed to taken a step back. I'm praying they've gone back to the drawing board because again this is an academy award winning VF company!! Did they really believe the fans would be happy with something that looked like it could be developed in a week? yeah no...
I almost didn't get Fae Farm cause of the My Sims ass looking characters. Meanwhile games like Coral Island and Fields of Mistria have generated so much hype almost entirely off the back of appealing character designs. Every video about those games has an NPC portrait in the thumbnail because they look good and catch your attention. No one's putting Nhamashal in a thumbnail.
Actually I get this. Your opinion makes so much since giving the history of work the company has. I’d expect more as well. I’m okay with the pushback as long as the time is used to give us something special. I’m rooting for this game, I LOVE the Hobbit so the idea of making my own lil hobbit coded sim is right up my alley.
WETA Workshop is LEGIT. They’re one of the real pioneers of modern motion capture animation with characters like Gollum and Kong in Peter Jackson’s 2005 King Kong movie. Not at all shocked THEY’RE the ones making Tales of the Shire
They are absolutely incredible, I just hope that translates to video game work... It's a whole different beast!
I, for one, AM shocked. The integrity of their art is seriously great, but I had no idea they would want to work on a video game. That's probably why the environments and props are so good-looking, but the hobbits themselves not so much.
Ok, this game still looks awful
Let's be real:
The pioneers you speak of are long gone. They were White men with top engineering degrees and more passion than worklife-balance. This has all been replaced with modern women of very average competence who are more focused on corrupting Tolkien's work with skin tones, than shader programming.
I am a very below average programmer, and I seem to be more capable than this studio. I should get back to programming: it seems like the bar toward getting your money is very low. I can cook you something.
I think it’s usually a good sign when games are delayed. (Usually lol)
I’ll have to see reviews to find out what all there is to do in the game, what sets it apart and what keeps it interesting before I 100% commit to this one.
i'm so glad that the game looks more promising! ❤ the weta fx stuff is so cool, hopefully that'll translate to a more authentic hobbit vibe
did u play Fields of Mistria? its soo good!
I like everything about this project, except the true to Tolkien Hobbits. They look ... unappealing...to me.
Uh, YEAH I agree about the animation style. Fae Farm WAS butt ugly and I’m not a huge fan of these Hobbits either!!! Like cmon there HAD to have been other art styles considered…… I’m still gonna buy and play it tho
I'm so discouraged by the amount of people mad that there are black characters in this game. Saying that DEI is ruining games when this is just a cozy life sim. I literally cannot believe how comfortable people are being openly racist. The only criticism is "why are they shoving black skin down our throats." I don't get it. It breaks my heart.
No, you have a point. Games should explore more different art style or art direction. I mean it’s a game based from LOTR. I think there’s an art style more fit and unique to this game but still has that life sim vibe.
the palia effect has another victim :(. no but fr why are we getting these cartoon blobs everywhere i swearrrrr
miss liss is FEEDING US WITH CONTENT
Oh shoot, being a Tolkien fan and also an Animal Crossing gamer, I want this!
I'm hoping with the delay it means they'll change a few things. I don't love the art style and I kind of want more story and discovery, I don't want it to be too similar to the dozens of other new cozy games.
This is based on books, so give us lore and collecting history or something about the shire, while we're building, farming, etc.
dont tone down your opinions i absolutely love hearing what you have to say 😤
I'm intrigued into it and I want to see game play first by creators before I consider buying 😋
In the meantime I'd love to see you play the demo of "We Harvest Shadows", it's about an hour and while it's more horror than cosy, it IS a farming sim and might be fun for spooky season content.
I’m usually not a graphics person in games, I’ll play anything if it’s fun, regardless of what it looks like. BUT I am a huge LOTR fan & have been for decades now. I’m excited at how lore accurate this game will likely be.. but even I had that kneejerk reaction of disliking the hobbit character models. They look unappealing & comical and I know it’s gonna ruin my enjoyment of the game 😭
Yeah, I'm skipping this game. If a company that can create the VFX for Lord of the Rings makes something that looks like this, they clearly aren't putting any heart into it at all.
I've also heard rumours that they are not paying attention to the lore so they can change anything they want. Which is just awful. It's just a rumour, though.
I'll guess this game will be Dead On Arrival. A few hundred to a few thousand players at most, and it will just drop from there.
no I'm 100% with you on this one when I first initially heard that weta workshop was going to be making a game and saw the trailer I was super excited and then I was absolutely heartbroken and so sad to see that the style they had chosen to go with for the game, as you said they didn't have to go hardcore but even something like Palia style and how the bodies are fully formed, and not chibi while still being cute but also just a little bit more mature, I feel like in this art style you lose a lot of detail and a lot of the beauty of the Lord of the Rings world and it all just looks too slopy messy and polygon-ish
The Fae Farm looked to Roblox/The Emoji Movie for me. I loved My Time At Sandrock. The character designs for that game were great. I just wish the character creator was more versatile in that game. The player character is pretty limited. Also it looks awful on the switch 😅
maybe good? hopefully the character design gets improved and the game mechanics and Quality of Life stuff are expanded (:
btw i found your channel by searching for this game today and i honestly am gonna follow this one, i like the chill feel of this video. you talk like people i hang with, real and curse like them too. which is refreshing in a mostly repetitive form of content on youtube. thanks for what you do, i laughed a few times because you pretty much said what i never found the words for regarding my feelings and hopes for this game.
Idk, I think the game characters could use more polishing! I couldn’t agree more with your Fae Farm comment. What can I say… I don’t want to date a cabbage patch kid, nor look like one 😅
It’d be nice if this was like Tolkien-animal crossing. But we all know within a month I’ll be able to buy a BDSM outfit in the cash shop.
I completely feel the same way - if the characters don't look so great I have a hard time enjoying the game. I love the visuals of games and I guess a huge draw for me is the actual character/sim. It's part of why I could never fully love the sims 3 😂😬
I am kind of in the same boat as you. The game has a ton of aspects I'm really interested in, but I'm just not a fan of how the hobbits look. I hope it doesn't kill the game for me, but I'm still going to try it regardless
i actually found fae farm beautiful (save for the characters) and that was p much its only redeeming quality imo 😭 but i do agree that there's a real issue w the general art direction in the cozy genre right now where a lot just looks uninspired and bordering on uncanny. plus nothing looks fresh anymore with how saturated the market is
to be fair i dont think hobbits are supposed to be sexy or cool. i think my only want is that its not just another life sim without any unique takes and which feels like a tedious grind for house design. i will go through the motions for a bit with any life sim, but i actually have to care or be invested or excited about something.
nah you were right about Fae Farm. It was fun at first, but it got boring real quick and the art style was ugly.
you should play fields of mistria!! it’s like stardew valley but has a 90s anime kind of feel!
At least it's not pixelated.... Which is every other game now.
I wonder what you would think about Palia since it kinda reminds me of tales of the shire
Do they have season in the game I just wondered if not I am kinda disappointed.
I'm fond of the art style for Tales of the Shire particularly because it's the same style as the Weta Workshop collectable Lord of the Rings figures. They're very cute and charming, and I think Weta Workshop does well at capturing the soul of Tolkien's world. I'm sad it's delayed, but I'm glad they're taking their time to get it right. 💕
After your first reaction, you got Shire pilled.
Wait it's not a mobile game? It looks like a mobile game.
glad ya want it, but never be afraid to express your opinion, love.
its not that it looks horrible it just looks old
Good, game looks like fake crap
Do they have season in the game I just wondered if not I am kinda disappointed.
I think it will based on the clips we have so far!
cozy = lame and boring
Keep it real, Lis! You don't have to tone it down as far as I am concerned! Do you like or play any mobile games?
I literally have the same exact thoughts about the graphic style… but still interested to play the game! It’ll take some getting used to for sure
Na
Kinda agree with the art style point, but I do think that as I play it, I’ll probably just get use to it.
Idc about the subject I'm just happy whenever a new vid drops on the second channel
your raw opinions help us!! pls dont try to tone down ☹️
Aw man not the big feet hobbit game 😢
fantasy life too 😢
I need a cozy LotR game 😢
What annoys me when I look up this game, are these incels complaining cuz the game has brown hobbits in it.
But yeah I agree, the graphics def need work. Looks fun tho.
I've been avoiding 2K-published games, but the game still looks cute.
Look up Weta’s mini epics vinyl figures (AKA Funko Pop competitors). You’ll understand where the art style comes from.
Imagine wanting hobbits to be sexy/mature looking. The whole point is that they are a simple looking people to fall in line with the message that it's the common, everyday folk that make the world worth fighting for. As per the author's experience in WW2. Great video, but as a fan of Tolkien's books and life that threw me for a loop.
We need THICC hobbits. OFC!
Do not tone it down
