It’s so sad that teachers are so under appreciated in this country. Their jobs are incredibly important, they help spawn the future generation. Some students might get mad of why teachers hate their lives and jobs but I honestly can’t blame them. Education is so important; this government should really reform it. But I suppose it’s like this because the elite don’t want free thinkers, just worker drones.

@Stuffzz lol thank you. I think a way to reform education at least is to require all teachers to have a masters degree or higher. The higher standards we have for our teachers, the better quality we will have for teachers.
@K C the idea I envision is that it becomes a respected profession, and a master’s degree may help with that
@K C well no actually. If teachers were in demand they wouldn’t be getting such low salaries. This is basic supply and demand. Sure, we’ll always need more good teachers, but as long as schools can find someone willing to take 30k for an overtime teaching job they won’t pay more.
@K C when people say demand it is usually in relation to supply. If demand is high but supply is even higher, that doesn’t count-the world does not desperately need more teachers and thus they are treated poorly. Nurses on the other hand, demand exceeds supply by a large margin. That’s why they are compensated much better than teachers, and the field is projected to grow quickly.

As much as how awesome that would be, I doubt it would happen. College is a business and if peoppe like him spoke to high schools, nobody would enroll there. Similar reason to why they don't teach personal finance, banks make money keeping people poor.

They don’t decide their major before they go in, colleges recruiters them to take general education classes about diversity and gender studies and they do that while they’re deciding their major and become radicalized by the first class and change majors to gender studies I would imagine.
I wonder how many material there is for gender studies. I get that there’s a lot to talk about when we talk about how it was created and how people have different opinions on it but.. that’s a whole degree. How many classes could they possibly have talking about gender?

I’m 24, majored in accounting and secured a good job right out of college. I’d say I’m in a very very fortunate and lucky position and am very comfortable with my degree choice. Yet, I’m still super addicted to shane’s videos even though I don’t plan on going back to school any time soon

I'm also a BSA student. It's nice to know that the degree is secured. Also I can answer your second question. It's because we just want Shane to roast weird degrees
Whilst Psychology gets roasted a lot in these types of videos, I do agree on the lack of job opportunities after. It was even emphasised during our degree orientation. I mostly went ahead with it because I intend to go into clinical psychology (which requires a PhD). My advice is, if you want to go into any of the degrees he mentioned here, it's best to be intentional and have a laid out plan as you're going through uni: volunteer in places you might wanna work at, join clubs, connect with profs and people in the field, or join a co-op program. Basically build experience as you go through uni so you come out not only with a degree. Also let yourself explore your degree in the first year or two so you can switch out when things aren't working out for you.

What kind of professors do you have to not emphasize on two major points: one you wont be a psychologist after getting a BA/BS and two there are a lot of flexible job opportunities such as Research assistant, RBT, mental health technician, camp counselor, case worker, sales rep, etc. It's important to tell high schoolers and undergrads that they wont be PRACTICING psychology with just a BA/BS but that there are still plenty of job opportunities instead of discouraging them to enter the field because "they won't be able to find a job".
I can't agree more, i think people should take time to explore in their first year in college and figure out what they want to do. If you want to get a high paying job right after college, then of course you should get a "practical degree". For me, I always knew I'm going to grad school and be in academia, so I majored in neuroscience in undergrad and now am in a phd program and i don't regret it at all. So i think it's important to think about what career you want to pursue and really do the research, not just choose a major because it sounds cool.
Thanks for the advice, I want to be a mental health therapist which requires a master's. I plan on interning at hospitals and mental health clinics, do you have any advice when it comes to this?

I'm 22 becoming 23 I'm still lost. I just graduated associate 2year degree because my parents have no money and say that I should work early to help them. Now I realized real world is so hard and competitive this diploma is trash. Now that I got saved from my small business. I'm planning to go back to school in bachelor degree comsci. I wish this is worth it.
Kind of a shame we look at college as a way to get a job rather than to expand ones mind.

Foreign language double major here. Spanish helped a bit for my first job, but not that much. Did a coding boot camp and am now working as a software engineer while doing a second bachelor's in comp sci online. My recommendation: if you love languages, don't give up on on them, but if you're spending money on college, get a major in a degree that makes money.

They tend to learn more technical words, And are specialized teachers, We need them in my country to get a certificate that assures our capacity to communicate in a highly specified environment in a different language.

I was just about to add this too! I'm about to graduate with my Bachelor's in Psychology, and there's absolutely no way I would every lobby for anyone to avoid considering grad school. I'm currently seeking approval to begin work as a mentor to help students look at the options for grad school they have, because many people get out of school with a Psyc degree and struggle in the field. Like you said, most jobs require some form of graduate degree in our field.

@@eeedona.3747 I guess my regret is specific to my uni, but I had an almost perfect mark in the course and then failed the midterm HARD (and none of my friends passed either) and then I kinda gave up for the rest of the semester lol. Other than, it is a good program to get into if you’re interested in it
Great video. So many colleges are riding the "Entrepreneurship Train". I've seen so many kids study, Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurial Studies in my University when the degree came out very recently.

I depended on Marketing to find jobs after my graduation. The only time a person asked about entrepreneurship focus was a boss of a new start up. That's all. And he didnt take it as a course but he's a boss.
If this entrepreneurship is just a short class for interest for people to learn about business law etc and to guide them for resources to open business. it would be fine but it should not be a bachelor itself. now I'm focusing on IT instead and other skillsets for the workplace.
I did my undergraduate degree in Japanese with a minor in math. Completely useless. The elephant in the room that no one talks about is that most people who major in a foreign language can’t actually speak, read or write in it. I actually learned far more Japanese in my first year living and working in Japan than I did in school. When I went and worked for a Japanese company in Hokkaido, my language ability skyrocketed. The only use my degree was, was in getting a work visa.
As someone who suffers from learning disabilities that effectively eliminate any STEM majors or careers (especially the “TEM” part), watching this is extremely depressing. It honestly seems like every “bad” major are the ones I could feasibly do, and every “good” major would not only be a nightmare, but also lead to equally nightmarish jobs.
I’m in the middle of my second year, so I HAVE to choose something to progress. But every goddamn thing that I could feasibly live off (and preferably raise a family at some point) of without going to grad school are things I just simply cannot do. Just thinking about it makes me angry.
Hey, I know it's hard and as someone who struggled with motivation and depression I can kinda see where you're coming from even I don't fully realize the extent. Do what you love doing and you'll go far, some of these videos are informative but they paint a super grim picture for no good reason. If you enjoy doing something, you'll outlast everyone that regrets their choice in the business. Kudos to you for coming this far and good luck!

As someone that has mild dyslexia, severe ADHD, and a biology degree, I'd say, never limit yourself. You may look around and wonder why no one is struggling like you and still getting better grades, but forget them. College is about challenging yourself and trying your absolute hardest to overcome challenges. I may not have finished placed where I wanted, but dammit, I gave it my all and came out successful. And you can do it too
People also underestimate how important networking is. I didn't know how to and regret that much more than my degree. A lot of people with "useless", generalist degrees can sneak in just fine if they know the right people. If you can learn how, it will really help you.
I felt the exact same way. I ended up getting a psychology degree and am now doing my masters in social work. I ended up having to do grad school, already knew I’d have to unfortunately. I remember looking through degrees though and all of the interesting ones that fit my skills and personality being the low paying ones. I think business/marketing, economics, or Human Resources are possible routes that aren’t STEM but could get good jobs with just a bachelors.

The major you choose is not always the problem, the issue is thinking your major directly leads to a job, when post-graduate employment usually comes from internships, letters of recommendation from professors, and alumni networks. Even for technical majors like CS and engineering, a degree is not enough on its own since everyone applying to those positions also has the same degreee, and employers want candidates with experience outside of classes.
I left university after 4 quarters (roughly 1.5 years) because I realized majoring in criminology is a waste of time and money. I’m so grateful I stopped myself, because I know a lot of students (especially first gens like myself) blindly continue with their social science degrees without really having researched job opportunities, salaries, etc.
Right now I’m treading carefully, making money and really thinking about what I want to study because I’m at a crossroads in life.
I wish I had taken a gap year after high school to work, save up for a car, and then start community college rather than go straight to a four year.
And not that anyone cares but I got into all 8 universities I applied to (UCs and Cal States)

It was the most regretted major in my school because you couldn't fall below a B in two major classes and you couldn't transfer in. So most people started nursing, ended up graduating with public health degrees. My friend who was a straight A student with a doctor for a Dad, got 2 B- s and had to take an extra year.
Nursing from my experience is a hard program to get into but if you can get in and graduate with a decent GPA, it’s really worth it.
Shane i think you should start up a counseling business and give advices to students on what degree to choose on case to case basis.

I understand why computer science was up there, a lot of my friends tell me that loads of people self-teach themselves how to programme etc. and a greater majority earn more by just learning themselves than by paying up to 30k for college. This is not to say it's all bad though, my cousin actually majors in computer science and she is in love with it! She always shows me the websites and games she's worked on and tells me that it is totally worth it - so it really depends on an individuals style of learning. Would you prefer structured lectures with deadlines? Or would you rather learn at your own pace in the comfort of your own surroundings?
As a comp Sci who hated the experience even as I was studying, the only reasons I didn’t go for a better choice was because of my dad’s endless crying and my own lack of idea what I want to do because he’d cry whenever I thought of other routes. It’s not a great place and the best people in my university I’ve met are always those who knew the material before they got the insult the school called an education.

I suppose doing things that you enjoy on the side is the best way to go forwards. I wanted a Communication Studies degree, so that I could go into HR. Worked in my favor, but I certainly understand how it wouldn’t work in the favor of others who’ve graduated with it. Dealt with a lot of rejection, for sure!

Another great video as always! I enjoyed your discussion about going to graduate schools because you "had to" versus "want to." I got my associate's and bachelor's degrees in STEM programs (computer technology and information technology, respectively) as I thought that would help me get a job after I got out of the military. However, due to the nature of getting jobs in New Zealand, I chose to pursue a Master of Engineering Project Management to make myself more marketable and meet experts in the industry. During this time, I earned my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. However, due to the effect of COVID-19 on the job market, I am also choosing to pursue a PhD degree as there is at least some stability in that lifestyle. If you had asked me what my plan was two years ago, it would have been much different.

Your videos are awesome. Unfortunately masters are becoming the new norm, I’m very fortunate to have a graduate assistant position that covers my tuition. Thank you for pointing out how science degrees are hit or miss, which is awesome to get that truth out there. Another thing I’m finding out from many people in the field, is that engineering is not the home run it used to be 10 years ago. I don’t know if that’s a video you’d ever want to make, talking about the different kinds of engineering and how some are better than others. Thank you for touching on law at the same time, law I know is another field that is very hit or miss on starting salaries. Awesome videos man, keep getting the truth out there.

As someone who's graduating with a BA in anthropology, it looks like I have better job opportunities than others with the same degree. It is what you said, you need a specialty. For myself, luckily I have taken a lithic technology class and a cultural resource management class. Both of which are relatively uncommon classes for graduate school, let alone for a bachelor's level degree. Then I'm graduating with a minor in geology. In which I hear that my school is a big name in terms of geology (as well as a few other majors. Also, by the end of spring semester of next year, I'll have a graduate level certification in GIST that includes classes in geology, geophysics, and electrical engineering.
Ok first of all, can I just say that I love your integration of memes into your videos?? I crack up watching them solely based off of that. But also this video helped me narrow down my own plan/path that I see for myself going down the rode. Like a school I'm looking at currently has a very interesting BS in healthcare that I'm considering going for. Maybe even double majoring in something else like business/healthcare admin along the way. But before I even do that, I wanna get a certain certification to be licensed to work with patients (9 months long) so that I can start getting some patient care experience for a *bigger* goal I have in mind for being accepted into grad school for a healthcare-related masters.
I also really like writing in general so I'm thinking of doing copywriting on the side as well, which you don't really need to have a degree in. You just have to practice practice practice and get in that experience. One thing I found really cool that I didn't notice before is that you can also do copywriting for the healthcare industry (and really any industry) as well.
Knowing all that, it will be interesting to see where my future projects and endeavors take me.
I am 14 years old and I often feel very confused about what I plan to do in the near future, but your videos are very informative and provide me with more clarity. Keep up the great work!

For those with quantitative minds, Accounting is an underrated degree that gives you a diverse set of career options. I don't regret getting that bachelor's degree at all. By my last year of school, I was managing my own department, and became a director in the healthcare industry right out of college.

I chose Communications because it’s an extremely versatile degree and couldn’t see myself majoring in anything else. I graduate next year (2022). My plan is to work in Human Resources. I plan on spending my summer and final year doing internships within the HR field. My degree allows me to get my foot in the door but I feel like experience matters more.

I am currently working on my chemistry degree and my main goal is pharmacology, but my backups are high school chemistry/math teacher (Canadian teachers are paid well), lab technician, and I am minoring in computer science as a contingency plan in case it takes me a while to find a job in the field of chemistry. So it’s good to hope for the best and be prepared for the worst.

I can attest to the fact that English is an impractical major, that was my major. After years of floundering around in low paying jobs, I went back to school and got a degree in chemistry. I now have a good paying job. I did not help that I had no career plan when I was studying English.
I did psych and went to a humanities based school, and I agree my degree (alone) was useless.
If you do social sciences or the humanities, you need to be supplementing your degree with *marketable* skills. I did my degree in psych, but I went to a bilingual university (we have these in Canada) and did half my course work in French. I also worked for my department doing admin assist jobs etc. I took leadership roles for different clubs and volunteered for a shit loads of events and got to network with different peoplee.
I now work in government doing personnel selection, and I get to use aspects from my psych degree as part of my work. But in no way at all would I have landed my job with *just* my degree. I reckon the area of study was the least important factor when they decided to hire me.
Universities take alumni like me and paint a picture that a humanities degree is your ticket to these sort of decent jobs. Its not. The degree was necessary, but in all honesty, the only reason I got my job is because I hustled my ass doing side projects outside of my degree. Most freshmen entering uni arent going to do that, and theyre disillusioned that theyll have a successful future so long as they complete their studies.

Shane, Thank you for the work you do! Especially for informing people about bioscience degrees. I am a biomedical science student majoring in medical genomics in my last year. Unfortunately, I found your channel too late, and I have to stick it out for that last unit, and I am done with this degree with a good mark. I have a good grade, but during 2 years of covid restrictions in Australia, I could not graduate early, and I have entirely changed my interest from medicine to finance. So now I will return to study bachelor of commerce majoring in finance.

I'd be interested to hear how people feel 1-year, 5-years, 10-years out. Their opinions may change over time. Maybe the degree doesn't work out right out of college, but it may be useful later down the road.
Awesome point. I know someone who regretted their physics major immediately after graduating(despite getting an engineering job) and later learned to appreciate it because after obtaining the job experience along with it they were able to land a high paying job.
Studying languages is for people who are REALLY REALLY into languages, analyzing languages, willing to work with a language. If translating isn’t fun for you and you’re not good in working under pressure don’t major in it.
That's true for success in all humanities! Unless you're passionate and devoted to all aspects of the major, you likely won't succeed within that field. Most people don't care about the intricacies of their given subjects, just the superficial intro level stuff. Thing is, only some Stem/business majors can get away with being apathetically interested in their degree. Most companies don't care if you hate your self/field of interest, it's simply, "Do you have a CS/Account/etc. degree? Cool, get behind that computer and make us money. here's 60-80k" Your passion is irrelevant. My gf and I majored in psych and history respectively for undergrad and have both good positions doing what we love, make decent money (though of course not as much as a good corporate job), and have clear paths ahead to progress. But we were both exceptional. We both wanted to get jobs in our fields since we were children and tailored our lives and goals around doing so. Most people just "Wanna learn how peoples mind works. So I majored psych" or "WWII movies are kinda neat so history sounded cool I guess" and are surprised when jobs don't fall in their laps after grad because they're being taken by people with actual passion. My former colleague whos a fellow medievalist got a top tier PhD position predominantly because of his familiarity with Latin and ability to do translations. Thing is, he was a MA when I was a BA and we were doing the same, end-level Latin courses. You can literally make yourself stand out before you even graduate. If you really want to succeed, you will!

I think something important to keep in mind is that students who pursue certain majors tend to be self-selected. So, just because 12.78% of computer science & mathematics majors don't regret their major, it doesn't mean that only 12.78% of students in general would regret choosing such a major. I'm a senior computer science major who chose computer science largely because I heard of statistics like computer science majors rarely regretting their major choice, but I completely ignored my heart and how I am as an individual, and now I regret my choice.
Carry on and get that degree! You might not use it immediately but its a very good career for the future and in 5-10 years you might change and try a job in that area and might actually like it.
Having said that I wouldn't take advice from me since I don't even know what I want to do in life

I know people that hated their computer science degree but ended up enjoying software engineering. Maybe you can get a swe job and see if coding grows on you. Software engineering is nothing like computer science!
@@vulpeszerda349 well I didn’t actually get a CS degree (i did math/physics), but from what i know about the CS curriculum it is very theoretical. Most of the topics you study in a CS degree you will never use unless you go into academia or if your job is as a specialist in some area (like distributed systems). Software engineering really only requires basic programming skills. For example, if you become a frontend dev (which it seems you may be interested in), you will really only need to know HTML, CSS, Javascript, and some frameworks. You will never use anything you learned in your data structure, algorithms, etc courses.

I was in the same boat. I suck at Math, didn't want to hurt my GPA, and didn't want to risk failing out; especially as a first generation college student. Im applying to college. I don’t want to live life full of regrets. I wonder how many high school students actually watch your videos... they should be mandatory in high school so you don’t get scammed in college. If you don’t take the right steps you get scammed out of like 100k+ in loans. Seems like being scammed 100k should be illegal but for some reason it isn’t. My friend was seriously considering majoring in gender studies and I stopped her in her tracks... without me telling her that’s a bad decision idk where she would be going in life... High schools basically set students up to fail by not giving them adequate information about what not to major in college. Next video should be least regretted majors (if you haven’t done this already) these videos are great, thanks for your help!

I was a math major and I got a job in 2018 right out of college. I would recommend it to everyone, it seems "hard" but everything you learn just builds on itself. Also got a useless physics minor but that was just cause it was fun

I’m glad when I switched from community college to university that my university switched my major from Bio to psychology. I wish I did psychology first so I wouldn’t be a bit behind but I’m glad I’m almost done in Fall 2021. My minor is biology. I’m doing it cause I want to enter medical school. Yes we don’t need any science majors or minors but as long as we have the requirements for the school. Damn!! I know 2 people who are teachers & they said they love their job. I remember my English teacher in senior year in HS said she makes more money than a nurse especially paid when not working during breaks 😂😂

JK Rowling has a Masters in French and Classics. George R.R. Martin has a Bachelors degree in Journalism and a Masters degree in Journalism. Martin credits much of his progress of developing his writing skills with his schooling. (according to what I have read).

I'd actually be interested in seeing the breakdown for number one by language. A degree in (for example) Russian or Japanese isn't really very useful at all for the average person unless you're traveling overseas. A degree in Spanish, though, could potentially be extremely helpful for getting work. Especially in areas like California and Texas, there's lots of Spanish speakers in this country and bilingual employees are in real demand.

I am a certified Medical Assistant i went back to community college to get my rn, but on the last semester of my pre reqs i decided to change my major to sonography due to the fact that i only like obgyn. I want to do sonography and later on become a midwife!
I'm 20 and am a 2nd year for A.A. I'm honestly thinking about switching my path from a theatre degree because reality crept into me while staying isolated 😂. I don't know which major to switch to for career skills that I want, so I'll just binge watch your videos for an idea. I'll do my entertainment stuff on the side. What about getting a bachelors in education and then going to China, korea or Japan to teach because their systems are great and they're well respected and get a great pay also the demand is higher than ever so...I really wanna do that especially since my country is shitty and I want better opportunities and basically wanna leave...so will I regret it? As an undergrad, the whole required graduate degree thing can be pretty frustrating, but it's a good way to tell if a degree is worth your time or not. My original college plan was to major in astronomy, since I have always loved space and telescopes and wanted to pursue something I loved.. However I quickly found out that you are much required to get a phd in astronomy/astrophysics if you want any chance at getting a nice-paying research job in the field, no negotiations. However the kicker is that at my school getting a masters or phd at graduate school isn't an option if you just do their default astronomy degree (which itself already requires calc 1 & 2 and physics 1 & 2), but only if you do the the much harder and longer astrophysics track which requires you to take fun easy classes like classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, differential equations, linear algebra, electricity & magnetism, and thermodynamics. In other words unless you are a certified genius and physics prodigy and decide to choose the hardest possible degree path and to do a full graduate degree, you are basically f-ed in terms of finding a good future job in the field and is why I've completely changed my major.

I see where you’re coming from, but you’re operating on a premise that you haven’t really justified. It’s certainly *a* reason, and it’s not a bad one, but I think it’s a bit of a reach to assume that’s the primary reason to seek higher education. Now that’s certainly the founding principle of vocational/professional/polytechnic degrees and institutions, but I am not sure the assertion that it’s *the* reason people get a degree is a fair or accurate appraisal. Nonetheless, a good video and you make some valid points

Agreed - sure, I could read books and learn the content that my lecturers teach me myself. But i wouldn’t have the experience of discussing my ideas with world class academics, writing essays and having them critiqued, living and connecting with other like minded individuals as well as individuals from all sorts of different backgrounds. the university experience goes beyond the simple acquisition of knowledge

You are correct. Higher education and academia have "evolved" (devolved??) in some places over time. They used to be known as meccas of real study and innovation in sciences of all kinds with strong faculties closely tied to their industries decades ago. When it started becoming apparent that higher education could be leveraged for employment purposes, the narrative shifted towards the capitalization of academia and a carbon copy style of education that a lot of young graduates hated so much.
Now, everyone realizes that direct specialization and experience is important or you won't get hired. Vocational opportunities abound too, but some of these are also outright diluted and opportunistic at worst. College/Uni is at a weird crossroads where they use to signify the edge of science and discourse but are now factories responsible for producing skilled workers. Because of that, there are many poor professional paths mixed in with decent ones which is not an ideal for helping people economically.

French major here! I do not regret my major at all! I majored in French because I’m trying to move to France and I needed a bachelors to further my studies in France so what’s better than learning the language or where I’m going? (: i say just study what you want, whatever makes you happy, but like he said, it’s always better to have a solid plan!

I only received my diploma last summer so it’s only been a year but I managed to move to France for a year which is something I’ve been wanting for years. Granted, it was a low paying teaching assistant job but I got to experience so many amazing things here that I wouldn’t have been able to experience if I didn’t major in French so the low pay honestly didn’t bother me much especially since I knew it was only a one year thing. I’m back tracking for a bit, I’m going to go back to the States for a year and save up money to do a masters in France, I’m thinking of moving into the psychology field, which while it’s not directly related to having a French degree, I will be living in studying in France which makes it handy. I plan to live in France long-term, even after my masters so for me I feel like having that degree is helpful, but maybe not for everyone! I think the important thing is to ask yourself if you really want to major in French. Does it make you happy? Do you enjoy it? What sort of opportunities could you envision yourself having with this degree versus another degree? Your opinion is the most important one to consider since it is your future and your life. Maybe to some I haven’t been successful so far since I’m currently poorer than I was in high school, but I have made so many great friends from so many different countries and I’ve had so many amazing experiences that I wouldn’t trade for the world, so in my book I’d say that I’ve been pretty damn successful (:

Education as #3 is interesting. My daughter has a BA in Math/Economics (dual major), graduated Summa Cum Laude from an honors program during COVID, had a gig as a para for an elementary school, loves the classroom, and is now going for an MA in Special Education. I thought she was set. The only benefit is that they can never take the Math/Economics away.. so she’s not really stuck.
As holder of Ba in Political Science I can relate to that. Is not that I regret studying political science, as I had the opportunity to learn more about myself and society in, but the thing is that is very impractical, to general and overall it is hard to get a job. Now, I find myself in a position where I do have to get a graduate degree. I chose to major in International Relations and have a specialization in Project Management to increase my employability chances.

I just retired after 40 years in elementary music education. Had a great time and was always employed in my chosen field. Never wanted to be an administrator! Pay is low (especially in Mississippi!) but I loved my work.

I was right🤪 I assume many ppl regret studying biology bc it's too general as an undergraduate. There are some hard materials that schools squeeze in only a class. Thus the need for an advanced degree

@@miaomiao07 there are jobs as lab technicians for hard sciences majors but they are pretty boring and pay maybe 30k a year. Physics majors fare a little bit better than biology and chemistry just because they do so much math and so investment banks are willing to hire them because if they can pass a physics major they know they can pick up quickly on the math involved in investment banking which is actually pretty basic.
What about Neuroscience? It’s still a biological science but has good opportunities.
Bro, I went to College for a little bit then I saw your videos and dropped out. After, this I began to work at a construction site and now I am seeing my freinds graduate with degrees that are somewhat useless. I am going back this summer for Accounting which is useful. I really want to do Computer Science, but that thing will take me like 7 years to complete.
I could say as a reference point, I decided at 22 that I wanted to be a school counselor. Did the research, knew I would need a master's for NC, went to tech school for entry reqs, went to university, planned to teach abroad for a few years for the observation hours for grad school but I got waitlisted, got injured & lost my savings.
So now I have my history degree which I love but I agree that till I go to grad school to finish my path, finding directly related jobs is difficult as most think you're going to be a teacher. Instead, I find myself looking into job fields that I am interested in that can help to expand my resume. I am still happy I chose History because I love learning about it but I also love learning about Psychology. 😁🤓

Getting there
I'm speaking from Europe, but this should be similar in US.
The thing about most science fields is that you need a doctorate to be able to apply for really good jobs. You can get decent jobs at Bachelors level in chemistry and some areas of biology, for instance in chemical industry, quality control and environment protection, but the really good career opportunities are typically research related, and you need a doctorate to even apply. The knowledge you get up to Masters degree is typically too general unless you want to work in education (up to high school).
On the other hand, in economics, finance, engineering, computer science and many other fields you would not have a lot of benefit from pursuing PhD unless you want to work in University level education.
