I wanted to learn, thank you. The Rhenish "Shum" cities were known as a major cradle of Ashkenazi Jews. On my father's side, I have a line that goes back to these three Jewish cities : Shpeyer, Worms, and Mainz. (SHUM). My father's father's mother emigrated from Mayence with her family after Napoleon took over. They moved to Pennsylvania.I know Napoleon is known as friendly to Jews, but that family was culturally more German than French. The massacres and forced conversions began in 1096. Peter the hermit riled up the German peasants. Ultimately, vast numbers of those Jewish refugees resettled in eastern Europe. Thus the anomaly of Yiddish (a German language) being spoken by Jews living among nations of Slavs, like Russians, Poles, Ukrainians.
That is true regarding Reform and Conservative synagogues; however, these communities far predated those movements. Essentially, these Synagogues would be considered Orthodox by today's standards.
Tell this freakin reporter guy to be proud of his German accent! He is trying to hard to sound American - which is unpleasing to my ears! Besides, German accents are the best accents
