I grew up on a farm in the deep south, USA, and we called them either new potatoes or baking/main crop potatoes. Have only heard determinate/indeterminate used in reference to tomatoes, not potatoes, but there are many regions and differences. And, of course, potatoes and tomatoes are both members of the nightshade family so it makes sense that the terms might be common to both. after years of watching British gardeners, I have been indoctrinated and now say 1st earlies, lol, and am also now saying swede instead of rutabagas, aubergine instead of eggplant, etc. 😊
Ive been growing my first sets of potatoes in the hallway of my building complex in grow bags. The locked entrance has 24hr lighing and the plants are growing like crazy. I planted Boxcar Joe reds which you Tony ID'd as indeterminate I think. Our last frost date is Apr 30th. I live in central Iowa USA. Tonight Im planting some "yellow" and I found some kennebec at a local farm store as seed potatoes. The yellows and reds were just store bought ones that sprouted faster than I could eat them. Planting the yellows (ukn variety) as determinate. Love your channel Tony. As a Brit...you are very easy to understand (regarding your accent). Thanks for great info!
The best explanation I’ve come across, well done Tony and thanks. I’m growing, Swift, 1st early, started in Feb in poly greenhouse, now outside in 30 litre buckets, ran out with some fleece last night, just in case but they are about ready. 2nd’s Nicola, are in the ground, no show yet, planted 20th March. Few pink main crop, can’t remember name, they are up, in 30 buckets.
Thats awesome Helen. Believe it or not Ive only just finished planting all my potatoes. 31 containers sown late though and 9 rows in the ground. Another experiment going this year so keep your eyes out for that later on.
I've found another benefit of growing in these 30l containers. I grow charlotte as second earlies & have found that I can keep these all the way to the end of March by simply cutting off the dying foliage, then storing the containers stacked up in my shaded garage & emptying as needed. I pick the next year's seed potatoes out as I go along & store them layered in the same compost they were grown in.
@@simplifygardeningThey're absolutely my favourite potato. One thing I'm struggling with is getting more than 4kg per container from them, though admittedly, the past three years have been difficult due to hot, dry weather through May & June. Going to try some in home made seaweed compost this year to see if the flavour is enhanced. I was going to do this with International Kidney but my supplier had a storage failure, so no IK seed potatoes 🙁 Planted my chitted Swift today, as I always aim to have new potatoes in the last week of May. Only 6 containers but they'll see me on until the Charlotte's come ready.
Love you're videos, I've only just came a cross them, I won't be planting this year as we've just moved in, the house needs renovating first, the garden is a concrete mess, I hope to have 3 raised beds ready for next year, if you ever fancy divercifieng, you're voice is so calm and with that soft accent you could make help me to sleep cd's I'm stressed all the time you seriously help me calm down at the end of a day 😉
Early, White Superior, Red Norland. Yukon Gold, Main crop. Thanx for the video, Tony. It certainly clears up the terminology. Good luck this season...I hope all goes well for you in the UK ! ! !
Hi Tony, Glad you are feeling better again. I grow 1st Arran Pilot, 1st only 1 spud Lily the rest rotted, 2nd Maris peer, Charlotte, Saxon, Elfe, Main Belmonda, Inca Bella, Maris piper and Heiderot (red inside) I grow the main crop and charlotte in 30 liter containers (4 potatoes in each) and all the others in 10 inch buckets with 1 potato in it. I shared a kilo bag of 6 varieties with my neighbour so I have around 5/6 potatoes per breed. The Maris piper were from my harvest last year. Eveline
Oooh, good question, I have a load of them this year !. late main crop - pink fir apple, first earlies - colleen, casablanca, 2nd earlies - orla, sarpo una, mary's rose, early main crops - (I've forgotten) American Rose / Red Emmalie, main crop - golden wonder. I grow mine in the ground. I usually cut the haulms from my main crop potatoes before they die back because I use them in composting. I do leave the potatoes in the ground for a fortnight afterwards to all the skins to harden before harvesting and storage. Just to add, a few years ago, I grew pink gypsy (I am growing it this year too) and it grew a really small aerial plant (potatoes were a great size) above ground.
Hi Tony, After watching this video it as got me back into going out into the garden, i am disabled but after watching a couple of your videos i have now ordered some of the 30 ltr pots and my first order for garlic, onion sets, and Main crop potatoes, from Sutton Seeds which they said they will deliver from December is that right ? I used to love the garden but with back troubles i had a problem but you have set me off again many thanks, the videos are great and i will be watching them all you now have another subscriber and i can learn from your mistakes and your expertise; at 70 years of age i have an ambition and a challenge to look forward to once more keep the videos coming and can't wait to hear those words again hi guys. lol
First early - Swift. Second early - Charlotte. Main crop - Sarpo Mira. Ordered 30 x 30ltr tubs from Oakland myself mid week, best price I've found online.
Good man Tony. I'm going to open a few drills tomorrow and leave them open for a couple of days to heat up and dry out a bit,as the ground here is still cold and wet yet. Earlies: Duke of York . Early main crop: Dempseys, a beautiful golden coloured smooth skin shallow eyed tuber. Main crop: Tibetan, a knobbly lumpy spud with great blight resistance.
Hi Tony! I had no idea potatoes were determinate and indeterminate. I will have to do some research to see which ones we have. We planted German Butterball (1st year trying them, and in containers), and we will also be planting this week Yukon Gold and Purple Majesty. We are new to your channel and so far we love it. We are learning new things every day. Thank you!
Hi Tony. It's good to see that you are well enough to make a video. It was good to see you in DSH's chat Saturday night. I was starting to get worried because I knew you had been sick. Did you get any elderberry tea? It's good to keep it on hand through the winter to knock back colds and flu before they take hold. It's also a good tea just to drink. I always add honey and lemon or a good apple cider vinegar to it. My Yukon Golds got nipped back a little by the freeze we had but I just chopped the damaged part off and put some extra mulch on them. Now they are growing well again. I will be able to harvest small ones in about 2 more months but I will let them grow until maturity. My Red Pontiacs are about 2 inches which means I will be able to harvest small potatoes in about 75 more days or let them grow until the plant starts dying and harvest larger ones. My Kennebecs have just started to grow so it will be about 80 days before I can harvest any small potatoes from them. Given the right conditions the Kennebecs can grow up to dinner plate size so I let them grow as long as possible. They are all three main crop potatoes. I will probably be planting my winter squash (pumpkins) in the bed after I harvest the potatoes. I hope you have a wonderful Birthday! Much Love
Hey Jan. Yeah still struggling. Tonight episode took all day to film still coughing and sniffing but at least im back on the plot now. Some exciting stuff coming up so stay tuned
Growing potato’s for the first time after watching your videos which are really informative, thank you Tony and team. I’m looking forward to growing main crop red potatoes next year and wondered if you could recommend a reliable source for seed potato’s, especially as the lack of rain this year has impacted farmers etc. 🤔👍
It's a pity I'm watching this video now, here in Ireland I always plant mine on paddies day. It makes it easy to remember when to harvest. First time commenter but I love the videos and have probably watched the whole back catalogue.
Hey, welcome to your first comment. I am really glad you decided to leave me one. It was my intention to get this out last week but I have been unwell, even today it was a battle. What's your name for the next comment so I can answer you directly :)
My name is Justin, I've only been gardening 3 years and each year its been more and more plants and more of the garden taken :D I've gotten so much out of your videos so very appreciative of you making them, even trying my hand at a few giant veg this year thanks to your inspiration.
Bearing in mind I'm still a newb here I put my two biggest onion bulbs both in their own 10 litre pots in the greenhouse, I'm also planning on taking all the flowers bar one from a jalepeno plant. I don't expect to be breaking any records but it's always fun to experiment.
Growing Charlotte as a 1st earlies and Navan and Kerr's Pink for main crop. Will be growing them in polypots this year as we had a lot of 35 litre ones left over.
I love your channel, Tony. This season ( southwestern Pennsylvania) I'm growing Maris Piper, Red Norland & Yukon Gold as Earlies, Desiree as mid-season and I'm trialing Ranger Russets as Main Crop. I'm also doing a TPS trial this year. All except the main crop will be grown in containers. I'll be growing the Rangers in a raised bed. 🌱🐝

good day to you Tony !! thanks for sharing your invaluable information and advice about potato verities !! i'm growing rocket 1st early, Charlotte 2nd early and Cara main crop
Hello Tony, the potatoes I'm growing this year are. 1st early sharpes express (6 no) and rocket (18no) 2nd early wilja (24no)cara (10no) and my maincrop are pink fir apple (6no)and finally sarpo mira(24no) both for the first time. Will grow most 1sts in 10inch pots, and the 2nd and mains in 30/40 litre containers. Here's hoping for a variety and nice crop of spuds. Cheers buddy.
In the US we actually use all five terms. We use first early, second early, and main crop to distinguish between how many days to harvest if we planted them all at the same time. (We also use the term midseason instead of second early.) We use determinate and indeterminate to distinguish between potatoes that grow on one level and potatoes that continue to grow up through the soil as long as there us soil above it and they're not finished growing. What seems lost on us is that the fast-growing early and midseason varieties are mostly determinates. The longer term, longer storing potatoes tend to be indeterminates. What's really difficult here is coming up with a list that is definitive on which are determinate and indeterminate. I've seen potato growers and the agriculture department's of prestigious universities call the popular Red Norland determinate and indeterminate, as well as other varieties.
Greetings from WA state, USA...thanks for the good information! Squirrels always dig up my spuds so going to grow some in a couple of barrels with an iron mesh screen on top, secured. Not sure what kind yet.I enjoy learning things from your programs.🌱👍🌼🍓🌽🌱🌱🌱
Thank You Melody really appreciate you sticking around and supporting my content. Hopefully there will be more you will enjoy :) Feel free to share anything you want to
Thank you for your help! I haven't had much luck with potato planting before. I'm inspired to try doing it right! I'm in Canada so no earlies for me! The ground is still frozen in spots!
Helllo Tony. I like your style. You talk non stop, I don't mean that you talk too fast. I mean you don't waste any time trying to stretch your video out. I believe you provide a lot more content that way. Quality videos for the amateur. Thanks. Geoff Heap.
Getting there Al. It didnt help that the first one of these i did today was dreadful sound due to a battery running low. So had to go refilm it at 3,30 after the full day of filming. Trying to do takes in between coughing and sneezing and sniffing been hard work lol
It depends on where you live and how thirsty your potatoes are. I'm in Florida I water mine when soil starts to dry and if you wait to long they will start to get droopy and sad.
I have 5 gallon buckets. 5 determinate and 2 indeterminate. All leaves past top of the bucket in 30 to 40 days. All under growlights. I used lo5s of healthy soil, perlite and organic compost. First time growing under growlights.
Hi. I did not know about early and second early etc. but I thought I would try growing potato's I have planted in small buckets King Edwards and marris piper just because I had them in my kitchen, I love your video's so helpful, I am hoping I get at least a few in my tubs. I can not grow in a garden arthritis but tubs are ok thank you for all your insight into growing potatos
Awesome Video and info. I have had my buckets which are the same as yours a good few years now and they still as good as new. They good for fruit trees as well as spuds. In the USA marketers have caused so many problems with names and varieties of Potatoes and some call regular potatoes sweet potatoes and sweet potatoes yams! I kid you not. 3 totally different species that not even related. So its good that you put useful info vids up like this for people to learn, :)
🏴 Great video, well explained. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I will be growing :- Pentaville Javaline (1st earlies), Charlotte (2nd earlies), Maris Piper and King Edwards (both main crop). Just need to get the glass into my greenhouse frame now so I can start the earlies 🙈🙈🙈🙈
Zone 9a. I've got russets going (they were sprouting in the bottom of the bag so I planted them around the end of january) Also have some early red potatoes that were sprouting in the bag, put those in late February✌ So far they all look great. Thanks for the info!
I have just today 26th August 2019 planted my seed potatoes in a hessian bag filled with my own compost- this will be interesting as I have never, ever grown potatoes only Sweet Potatoes ( which I love) so wish me luck Tony & will let you know how I go- loved this video as it was so informative but why doesn't anyone ever reference Australia ??? or Down Under as we do grow vegetables. Cheers Denise - Australia
You have some very good gardeners there too Denise, Like Robbob and Mark from self sufficient me, both sticking up the flag for Ozz. I think the main reason that the bulk of folks dont mention Ozz is that most subs dont come from there, However I am seeing a big increase from Ozz in my subs list and your now my 5th largest Audience SO i am always happy to see more Australians subscribe :)
Just checked my Spud comparison vid from last varieties going in this year mate.:- 1st's 1. Rocket - 16 small tubers from Poundland 2. International Kidney (Jersey Royal) - 24 small tubers from Poundland 3. Ulster Prince - 24 Large tubers from Pole Green Nursery 4. Red Duke of York - 24 Large Tubers from Pole Green Nursery 2nd 1. Charlotte - 30 from Pole Green Nursery Mains 1. Maris Piper - 24 from pole green 2. Sarpo Mira 48 from pole green 150 seed spuds total... if they all come good we are hoping for 500lbs harvest... All fingers and toes are crossed for that one brother.. LOL Cracking upload as ever T. ATB Guru M
Cripes.. Where do you store mate was thinking of under the stairs, but it's probably too warm there... Could do with one of those Root Cellars@@simplifygardening
Well, my first mistake of many was to go to the garden centre and buy my first thinking I would go back for my seconds and again for my main crop? So I was too late for the second and main crop so thought I do better next year and get the lot at the same time. Then I was in Lidl and saw some Scottish reds that showed signs of sprouting. So I got two bags a bit late maybe but as I have 20 30l containers what else could I do? Asda was selling 50l bags of compost 3 for £12 so I got 12 bags and made a start by just putting in the first layer mainly to see how much room they would take up and stop them blowing around in the wind. So I will plant the Scottish reds today 26 May and just hope they are not more of the Australian plants? What are Australian plants? Well, I plant them here but someone in Australia gets to pick them. So fingers crossed lol
Yeah it took a while Steve, the script alone took me 4 days to write. the videos ive been doing this last 9 months have taken about a week each from start to finish
Hi Tony just discovered your channel through Oakland gardens flyer that came with my order I have subscribed and watched several of your videos and must say I am well impressed with your professionalism and knowledge. What I would like to ask did you make the rotary screener and if so is there a video tutorial how to make. Keep them coming. Best regards Ron H. Lancashire.
Hi Ron. Thanks very much for your kind words, Glad you decided to check the channel out and stick around. Yes mate I made the soil sifter here is the link th-cam.com/video/HL8qqsaN8JI/w-d-xo.html
Here in France I grow the very rare 'Bonnotte de Noirmoutier', a first early little potato wich is really a little gem. It is the most expenssive potato here in France. I got my tubers from my girlfriend oncle since she's from Noirmoutier island 😄 Do you know this variety ?!
Hello Tony, Big change for me this year as I am using 75% container V in the ground. You didnt mention what will be the biggest bonus for me in container grown....convenience and speed of harvest. I hate digging up potatoes especially when I seem to put the fork through the biggest tuber. Usual line up for me....Swift - Charlotte - and my trusty reliable friends Sarpo Mira. Just finishing cleaning the last few of 2018 Sarpo crop before I put them into store. 😀👍
Yes pal the containers save loads of time. I did mention it in the experiment video but not in this one as I didnt want to keep repeating myself. New info :)
Hi Tony. I live in phoenix Arizona and want to find a potato that’s indeterminate but also the biggest in verity. Having trouble with that. Nurseries do sell some small varieties but they don’t know much about potatoes. Can you help me with a veriety that I can get here in USA.
Your links to your videos in the description do not work. I tried to see the polytunnel and also the 200watt solar in shed and both videos say: This video isn't available anymore
i am just about to plant my first potatoes this year --ROCKET - ( first earlies-) in the valleys, south wales , putting them into 3 foot square green garden rubbish bags from WILKO S. watched this twice now and still not sure if i would have to mound them ? or just leave them in the soil ? paul merthyr. .
Hi Tony, Great video mate. I will be growing Main Crop. Pentland Crown & Maxine Red Skin. I am trying out another that I bought from the main store called Cultra. Cultra is a high yielding variety with low outgrade levels. Long oval tubers, parti coloured skins with cream flesh. Distinct pink eyes. Excellent cooking characteristics, with long term storage potential. Susceptible to spraing, internal rust spot, potato cyst nematode Globodera pallida Pa2/3,1 and potato virus Yo. Resistance to Splitting and tests show Cultra as resistant to potato cyst nematode Globodera rostochiensis Ro1. Copied & pasted this bit but worth a try as they are a nice spud. Oh1 & a Happy Birthday to you in case I miss you. Thank's for sharing.
Rod they sound like they could also be a good show bench spud by the looks of it. Keep me informed of how they go please I would be really interested to know
@@simplifygardening All mine will be in Buckets this year. I saved 12 of the Cultra about egg size. One in each 10in pot, The ones you can get from ASDA off the flower display's. The others are going in my 30r buckets, You know the ones lol, I have about 70 of those now.
I'm going to try and grow mine in pots after watching your video. Each year I grow early, mid season and late. Yellow and red baby are usually what grows best for me. Have you ever tried to grow potatoes in old car tires? Thanks for the info.
I have Shirley. But i found it a real chore to get them out as the soil stayed on the rims of the tyres. But when i found these containers I never looked back
@@simplifygardening I agree with you about the tires, looking forward to trying the containers. I'm waiting for the snow to melt then I'm getting my hands dirty.
Hi Tony, Ive just planted some Home Guard first earlies. You say they should be ready around June. What will the foliage look like ? Will they have flowered and died back? Is there any value in leaving them in longer?
They may well flower David but if they do pull off the flowers to allow the energy to go to the tubers, You can leave them right until the haulms are dead, they will get a little bigger but this could cause them to split or even go dry. Ideally your looking for egg sized for first earlies have a fertile and see what they are like
@@simplifygardening Is pulling off the flowers a rule of thumb for first earlies or would you apply it to all spuds? Great word lol but I would have spelt it ..furtle.. cant beat a good furtle 😁
nice video i bought some 1st early jazzy the other day my brother grew them last year and said they was lovely tasting so i thought worth a go have you grown them
Hi Tony. Great video as always. Something that has me a bit stuck now is knowing when to call time on the potatoes and go to harvest. My container spuds have grown like mad and the foliage is a good 2.5 to 3ft plus out of the soil. Up till today they have looked very much like little bushes. There have been no flowers from them. With rain and wind today I have noticed that even when staked the foliage is dropping and the main stems appear split now. Having never done this before can you tell me if I have messed up or is this the start of the tops dying back? I have watched also a lot of video from yourself and other gardeners on You Tube to try and guess when harvesting is needed. Sometimes the tops are still showing green and others they have dried out completely. I also am wondering if you cut when green can the tops be added to compost or is it best to put in the bin? Another thing is can I recycle the compost I used in my containers to grow again or is it now spent? Thanks for any help you can give.
Hey, right the potato is practically a vine it will fall over the sides, if its green then its good to continue to grow, give it a feed as now will be the time the tubers are swelling, use a tomato feed or comfrey tea. Let them go until the foliage yellows I have a container that is doing the same. If flowers do come pull them off as its wasted energy. Providing you havent had blight its ok to compost the tops, if you had blight either burn or dispose of them. Yes you can reuse the compost for potatoes again providing u didnt get blight if you did, you can use it else where in the garden but cannot grow potatoes or tomatoes there,
Thanks Tony! Very helpful. I was starting to panic. Can't see any signs of blight thankfully. The first batch went into the buckets the week before easter. The second in Easter week so they are fairly well along at 8 weeks. I will get some feed on them tomorrow as advised. Thanks for the help. :)
No probs just keep feeding and watering and when the leaves go yellow time to pull, but cut the halmes off and leave a little while for the skins to harden off then harvest. unless you cant wait of course
In order to use your harvested potatoes as seed, do you need to store them to get them to regrow if you live in an area that does not have any frost days?
i do both bags for 1sts [Autumn 1sts stored till march in bags no problem] and soil for the rest. Buckets and bags can mean more watering because even if it rains bags can get dry. So the crop might be higher but so is the labour and cost? Swings and roundabouts.
I am trying pink fir apple potatoes this year for the first time. I always earth them. Should I not do that? I am using a grow bag. How many should I put in the bag? Thank you. Absolutely love your videos.
This year I’m growing Irish Cobbler, Mountain Rose, Red Pontiacs, Russetts, Red Norland, Red Lasoda, Purple and Red Viking, Nicola, Yukon Gold, German Butterball, and Kennebec
I have an issue, I bought 4 different verieties so far but I didn't know about 1st and 2nd and mians. I've looked them up now but on different pages there are conflicting info as to my spuds being 1st an 2nds, and also 2nds to main. I have salad blue, blue danube, sarpo axona and I think Duke of York.
Have you ever tried leaving Charlotte to fully mature? Ie: plant as a first early but harvest early Autumn? Allegedly they were bread as a second earl/main crop but so unpopular when introduced they didn't even bother applying for the patent (?) in the UK. A couple of years later they caught on as a Salad Potato. Apparently, if left in, they grow big.
hi Toni, Thanks for sharing mate. You really didn't tell us much about potatoe vereities. I was expecting names. Plus what to plant when? How to cross-pollinate them? What temparatures do they need? How to prepare the soil for them? What kind of fertilizers are required? What were you doing with wrapping the potatoes with the newspaper? Please make another full fledge video about potatoe plantation, because that is one of the most important plant/vegitables there ever has been.. Please do not give any links in that video to other videos.. Just compile for us all the information in one video, so that we just know, okay... watch that video from Toni to know everything about potatoes..
Hey thanks for your comment todays video should answer a lot of these questions and I have some others planned to answer the rest here is a link. Dont miss todays video on potatoes, its packed with tons of tips th-cam.com/video/hgJa2wrX6lA/w-d-xo.html
English Heritage Fortyfold(1840), King Edward, Apache, Miss Blush, Bergerac, Blue Danube, Coquine, Jazzy, Libertie, Markies and Sagitta. Not into the run of the mill from supermarkets and nurseries.
There will be and no where near his, I had some serious issues with germination due to a failed heat mat that i didnt know about it, They have only just poked through so not much to write home about atm. I will update you as time goes though
So did I understand you correctly that when planting indeterminate potatoes, just fill the bucket up right away. No need to keep adding soil every few weeks
im new to gardening ive got some Albert Bartlett Rooster seed potatoes can you please tell me are they 1 st 2 nd or main crop ive no information than that was bought as seeds not just shop bought thank you Tony ps good video b the way
@@simplifygardening Thanks for the information Im growing them in buckets with sawdust and spent coffee with potato fertilizer and blood fish and bone im also doing javlin , international ,maris piper
My favorite potatoes are ‘New potatoes’. Please tell me a name or two of potatoes in this category. Thank you! I’m also trying to grow Kennebec for the first time. They’re being chitted now.
So Tony, do earlies and mains go in at the same time? It’s just the length of time it takes to harvest? Also, how deep for the main crop 10-12”?? Thanks Tony. Always a helpful video when I need it.
that's a bit of a trip if your passing you can drop by my plot and give me some tips haha love the trommel might be interested in making my own maybe a hand powered version
Have you ever tried burying an indeterminate potatoe really deep and then just contentiously building it up like a tomato plant as it grows? Also do you know by any chance what type a King Edward is? I can't find any info on whether it's determinate or indeterminate online. Thanks.👍
Bore da Tony , I've just bought 10 buckets , its April 23 and I want two varieties to try can you recommend , which two and how many to fill 10 buckets ? All the best , John.
Hey Tony, will you be attempting to grow a Giant Potato this year? and have you you took the video down from last year or the year before of you big one? I was going to share the video on our facebook page but cannot find it? If I remember correctly you went into detail about having just one chit? :)

Yes I do this quite a lot and charlotte do very well like that

One thing I'm struggling with is getting more than 4kg per container from them, though admittedly, the past three years have been difficult due to hot, dry weather through May & June.
Going to try some in home made seaweed compost this year to see if the flavour is enhanced. I was going to do this with International Kidney but my supplier had a storage failure, so no IK seed potatoes 🙁
Planted my chitted Swift today, as I always aim to have new potatoes in the last week of May. Only 6 containers but they'll see me on until the Charlotte's come ready.

USA, Texas..I'm growing determinant varieties, early & mid! Thanks for the video
Excellent thanks Kim for letting me know. Hope you have a great crop
Eveline
Thanks Eveline, Not perfect yet this video too all day in between couching and sneezing and sniffing lol
Wow John, your all out on spuds this year mate
Actually, we decided to sow 27 varieties this year. 7 earlies (1st and 2nd), 9 early main crops, 10 main crops and 1 late main crop.
Yes Richard. Oakland a great company and the cheapest around this is why I have no issues promoting their products to you guys
Christy sounds like you have everything worked out and a ton of varieties to go with it
Thank you!
Hey welcome to the channel. So glad you found me and decided to stick around. Hopefully will get to know you guys better over the coming months :)
Just to add I get my plastic containers in Ireland from the gardenshop.ie and have never had a problem with them.
@@justinkyfishmongerma Oh wow, That is fantastic. Glad you enjoy my videos what giants you going to grow?
Bearing in mind I'm still a newb here I put my two biggest onion bulbs both in their own 10 litre pots in the greenhouse, I'm also planning on taking all the flowers bar one from a jalepeno plant. I don't expect to be breaking any records but it's always fun to experiment.
Exactly what I was wanting answered.
Excellent glad it was what you needed. Loads of people been asking it in the groups
Absolutely well timed this advice Tony... Just what the Doctor ordered... Excellent and worth the wait brother!

Cheers Pal. Glad it was of interest to you. Thought I would start my spud season with something a bit different
Excellent as always
Thanks Tony
A Pleasure as always Lizzie :)
Red pontiacs here in Alberta Canada. Starting them next month in containers as per your linked video. Really liked your videos. Cheers.
Cheers Wizebuck. I am glad the red pontiac are a great spud
Thankyou so much for a very, very good explaination.
Thanks Lorraine glad it cleared it up for you :)
Growing Charlotte as a 1st earlies and Navan and Kerr's Pink for main crop. Will be growing them in polypots this year as we had a lot of 35 litre ones left over.
polypots are great too.

Cheers for letting me know Alex. Seems you have it all planned out buddy
I discussed some of these varieties in todays potato video
Yeah earlies a little hard for you atm, but main crops would be great try the containers it will help you get a great yield
Helllo Tony. I like your style. You talk non stop, I don't mean that you talk too fast. I mean you don't waste any time trying to stretch your video out. I believe you provide a lot more content that way. Quality videos for the amateur. Thanks. Geoff Heap.
Great to have you back, hope you're on the mend boss
Growing Setanta and Sarpo Mira maincrops. In heavy duty pots the same as yours from www.thegardenshop.ie if any Irish viewers wanna pick some up
Getting there Al. It didnt help that the first one of these i did today was dreadful sound due to a battery running low. So had to go refilm it at 3,30 after the full day of filming. Trying to do takes in between coughing and sneezing and sniffing been hard work lol
Hey Tony can i grow main crops in 50 L containers? And how often would i need to water them
It depends on where you live and how thirsty your potatoes are.
Sounds great! Stay tuned I have a patio growing video coming very soon
Yeah it can be a pain when a marketing team say if we do this we will sell more, it just confuses things for people
Hi Tony really concise explanation. As regards growing potatoes in containers, which one would be best to grow in a 3ft semicircle bin?
That would be Sarpo Mira mate. blight resistant and will get a good size
Diolch
🏴 Great video, well explained. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I will be growing :- Pentaville Javaline (1st earlies), Charlotte (2nd earlies), Maris Piper and King Edwards (both main crop). Just need to get the glass into my greenhouse frame now so I can start the earlies 🙈🙈🙈🙈
Great spuds Stephen and thanks for the comment
Zone 9a. I've got russets going (they were sprouting in the bottom of the bag so I planted them around the end of january) Also have some early red potatoes that were sprouting in the bag, put those in late February✌ So far they all look great. Thanks for the info!
Karin thats great waste not want not a they say :)
Really nice video.....like all that explanation..... so 2 thumbs down.....hard to believe....👍

Excellent video.
Thank you very much Mandy :)
Good clear information Tony
Thanks Patrick :)
Thanks
Excellent Video
Cheers Shawn
Well explained Tony . Sadly none for me this year to much building going on . But hope your on the mend.
Cheers Pete.
Thanks Pete. Thats a shame mate. Well you can sit there and drool at mine when I harvest mate :)

What are your thoughts on growing potatoes and grow bags?
They will do well, but they dry out very quickly so you need to be on your game watering otherwise you will have a poor yield and scabby spuds
Thanks Tony, another really informative video. I can only imagine the storyboard and forethought behind the filming of this one...
Yeah it took a while Steve, the script alone took me 4 days to write. the videos ive been doing this last 9 months have taken about a week each from start to finish
Do determinate potatoes do as well in potato towers???
Yes they will but you wont get any more unless you sow on lots of levels
Hi Tony i heard you mention bee keeping do you have any experence with mason bees i was thinking of getting some cocoons and put them in my garden?
Mason bees are a solitary bee, they are ideal if you got a good bug hotel nearby
I got my tubers from my girlfriend oncle since she's from Noirmoutier island 😄
Do you know this variety ?!
I've got Adirondack blue, Kennebeck, Youkon Gold, Russet and sweet potato and yams.

Thank you Tony
Thank you Tony. You are the best.

Great word lol but I would have spelt it ..furtle.. cant beat a good furtle 😁
this is the first time trying growing potatoes...wish me luck.
Good luck, You will be awesome. Love the name by the way ;)
nice video i bought some 1st early jazzy the other day my brother grew them last year and said they was lovely tasting so i thought worth a go have you grown them
No Steven. What were they like? any other first they are similar too?
@@simplifygardening they are a small salad potato a good cropper with a lovely taste
Yes you still need to store them or they will regrow within weeks
Thanks!
Enjoyed the video
Ah you already have lol glad you enjoyed it lol ;)
Could you please send me your list of fertilizer that you use please i know about fish and bone
i do both bags for 1sts [Autumn 1sts stored till march in bags no problem] and soil for the rest. Buckets and bags can mean more watering because even if it rains bags can get dry. So the crop might be higher but so is the labour and cost? Swings and roundabouts.
Yes however I find i water my containers less if i bury them 1/3rd depth
I am trying pink fir apple potatoes this year for the first time. I always earth them. Should I not do that? I am using a grow bag. How many should I put in the bag? Thank you. Absolutely love your videos.
pink fir apple are relatively small tubers you could put three in a grow bag and fill it completely dont worry about topping up
This year I’m growing Irish Cobbler, Mountain Rose, Red Pontiacs, Russetts, Red Norland, Red Lasoda, Purple and Red Viking, Nicola, Yukon Gold, German Butterball, and Kennebec
Fantastic results Lisa. Im going to see if I can get some Yukon Gold for next year as I have not seen them for sale here
I have an issue, I bought 4 different verieties so far but I didn't know about 1st and 2nd and mians. I've looked them up now but on different pages there are conflicting info as to my spuds being 1st an 2nds, and also 2nds to main. I have salad blue, blue danube, sarpo axona and I think Duke of York.
Adam, Axona is a main crop and store well. is a first or second early makes no difference salad blue is a main. and so is blue danube
@@simplifygardening thank you.

Cheers mate. The next one just launched so enjoy :)
Funny enough yes 2 years ago i left them in the containers until December and they got huge but lost their taste
hi Toni,
Thanks for sharing mate.

I would like to grow nice big potatoes. Can you tell me which varieties to grow here in UK. Thanks.
If your after big potatoes. Sarpo Mira, Kondor or Rudolph are all great at getting big
So did I understand you correctly that when planting indeterminate potatoes, just fill the bucket up right away. No need to keep adding soil every few weeks
When planting any potato in a container just fill it right to the top. Check out yesterdays video
Might have to try planting some pots with potatoes and seeing how it turns out.

Have you ever tried burying an indeterminate potatoe really deep and then just contentiously building it up like a tomato plant as it grows? Also do you know by any chance what type a King Edward is? I can't find any info on whether it's determinate or indeterminate online.
Thanks.👍

Hey Tony, will you be attempting to grow a Giant Potato this year? and have you you took the video down from last year or the year before of you big one? I was going to share the video on our facebook page but cannot find it? If I remember correctly you went into detail about having just one chit? :)

It seems as though Canada has the most understandable terms for types of potatoes. We have Early, Mid- season and Late! Easy peasy!
Same in the UK
