    Nice to see how this is done. Polished rocks are some of the treasure I find as a garbage man. Some I keep. Some I give away. And some go into the driveway with the river rock that is there. Lots of the ones I put in my drive only stay there for a little while. Not unusual to hear a slight gasp and exclamation of awe and the rock goes to a new home. Also when an adult picks up a rock, I like to tell them it's an antique. Then the predictable expression before they tell me "Of course it's an antique!" :)

    I love amethyst because of the purple color of the stone. It's my favorite semi-precious stone. I think that the mineral might help with your body's natural bio-electric field and may balance it out to allow for wellness. The most soothing part is the color and the aesthetic appeal to my mind I get from wearing it.

    I read about how to make an industrial tumbler out of a rear axle of a big semi truck with the rims and tires in place. You want to cut an opening in the highest part of the rim to load rocks. The article said a cover is not needed but I always thought if I was going to do one I would have a hinged door sealed with inner tube rubber. The idea is to set up a motor geared down so the tires rotates slowly and all the rocks stay in the lowest part of the tire at all times tumbling over each other. Each tire can hold about 100 lbs of rocks and you have 4 tires going at all times each one with a different grit. Always use same tire for the same grit. You rotate the rocks once a week and you have a 100 lbs of polished tumbled stones each week. I have been wondering if you could use quartz sand as grit for the first stage to do the rough rounding off? I am posting this on all videos about rock hounding to spread the idea, if this is you channel and you do not like that let me know.
    The fact that the tumbling will all take place in a rubber tire should help keep the noise down. The rocks should never touch the rim. I have suggested to people that they make a sound proof shed just big enough to be practical so the noise will be minimized. Plus the rubber in a tire is thick and should absorb a lot of the noise. Also you should have a small fan on the motor to keep it cool. A high quality motor will be a must as it will run 24 hours a day. I am no expert but with the proper gearing the motor should not be under too much stress.
    I would sell the tumbled stones. Once tumbled, you grade them by quality and type. Some would be really valuable. I bet you could average $10 usd per pound with just good found material and more if you have high grade material. Definitely not for the weekend rock hound but if you sell stones or want to, what a cheap way to start. You could tumble other people's rocks for a fee or shares too. You could make one with car tires for a smaller scale operation. There has to be a lot of people with a 30 year in the making, 3 ton pile of rocks out behind their house. With this they could see results from all that collecting.

      Good question! The coarse grind shapes the rocks faster, but sure wears down the rocks. Probably, the better way to do it (if you want to save rock), is to shape individual rocks by hand with a flat lap or grinder and then tumble. In this case, I wanted to show "tumbler ready" rocks that were bought and how they turned out. I have a run right now with moss agate and am doing the same thing. When that is completed, I have some rose quartz to tumble, but will probably shape some or all of them prior to tumbling.

    Love your videos. I'm confused about how much grit (and polish) to use. (I'm using 3 pound barrels in rotary tumblers).
    Is 2 Tbsps enough of Coarse, Medium and Fine grit?
    For the Polish?
    Also, I'm seeing bruising. I have added ceramic media to all steps (even coarse) to avoid bruising. Is this right?
    Further, since I've already bruised some quartz by tumbling it without media, will taking it back to step 1 remove the bruises (cushioning it with ceramic media) or are the bruises too deep?
    Lastly, I have some Blue Lace Agate that I love. Does this stone need media to prevent bruising? It was costly rough and I don't want to mess it up.
    Thank you again for the videos. You make rock tumbling fun. :)

    Good morning! Question on the ceramics - when they are new, is there a prep stage needed for them before adding them to rock?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You should not add brand new ceramic to stage 3 or 4. Better to let it run in stage 2 for a little while to smooth out any sharp edges that might scratch your rock

    I have seen the ivory soap thing for burnishing before. But instead of ceramic chunks they used saw dust as a filler.

      I haven't tried sawdust. I have tried walnut shell. I prefer plastic beads or ceramic media. Personal preference

    Have you ever tumbled chrysocolla? I just got some rough pieces, and know it's pretty soft. But a few of these have a little quartz on them so I'm hoping that they'd tumble ok. Any tips? Thank you!

      I tried some once that was self collected and they did not turn out very good. I would like to try again. It is difficult to tumble rocks of various hardness. I will try to let you know if I give it another try. Let me know if you are successful.

    Thanks for info. How long did you run in the burnishing step? Do you add extra grit during the 3 weeks of first stage? Thanks!!

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I only add additional grit if the slurry gets thick like oatmeal. In that case, I clean off the rocks and add fresh water and grit. You could add more grit when you have a peek in a long run like 3 weeks, but I don't because I am cheap. It would certainly make the tumble a bit faster.

    Will you get larger pieces at the end if you used a revolving Tumblr for step one and then shifted to a vibrating Tumblr for the rest of the process?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is probably especially true for softer rocks. Sometimes, I have left leave my rocks too long in step 2 and unnecessarily lost some size.
      That said, I currently only use rotary tumblers and broke my vibe tumbler without having much experience with it (too much weight from tumbling silver in the vibe.
      The "experts" that I know usually move their rocks from rotary to vibe in step 3 to save their vibe from the extra wear of the med. grit. More importantly, vibe is faster and tends to be more gentle on the rocks.

    How loud is a tumbler? I have thin walls, can I run one in my flat without annoying the neighbors?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I run it in my basement and close the door to the room, I don't hear it elsewhere in the house. I insulated that room with sound barrier when I renovated. Tumblers can be somewhat noisy if the barrel is less than 3/4 full. If you have thin walls, you will probably annoy somebody.

    My name is Brian, using wifes computer because she doesn't let me have anything! LOL! I am having a problem with tumbling my Amethyst to where they have a powdery look after I have gone thru all of the stages. Will burnishing help with this or should I start all over again? Anything will help, thanks.

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't start over. If you are satisfied with the rounding, but not the polish consider doing stage 3 and 4 again. You probably had grit or a sharp rock in your final stages. You can tell if burnish will be effective if you rub one of the rocks for a short while aggressively on a soft cloth. If that makes it better, then for sure burnish. Actually, I always burnish because it won't hurt and usually helps.

    Thanks for this - just got my 4 year old boy a rock tumbler for xmas along with 2 lb bags of amethyst, flourite and labradorite - it would be helpful if you indicated how long you tumbled the amethyst each step - step one you did for 7 days, but what about step 2, prepolish, polish and burnish?
    I've heard flourite and labradite are not for the faint of heart so we'll be doin the amethyst first, then labradite and finally the flourite.

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amethyst is hard. Put it into step 1 for a week and then take a look. It might need another week if you are not happy with the amount of rounding. The next steps are about a week each. Burnish is at least 3 hours but can be longer (like overnight) and some people do it for a few days. The other rocks are soft and won't take long in step 1 & 2 ... or they will grind away to nothing. Maybe 1-3 days for those steps. Hope you have fun
