- In this video I ask the age-old question, can an app identify a rock? I tried using several different apps to identify various rocks, minerals, and even fossils. The results were...well you will see! Thanks for watching! :)

Happy Hounding! 🪨✨
"yes this is indeed a rock, thank you for buying our monthly subscription"
Haha exactly 😂
I am an absolute beginner and the Rock identifier app helps quite a lot. It is not 100% accurate but sometimes you get an idea in which direction to look further. It is faster than a book.
I agree, and honestly I find if you don't pay for the subscription the second or third option is usually the most accurate and always make sure to double-check some photo comparisons
I love using Rock Identifier! I have never paid for a subscription and have been able to identify hundreds of rocks. One trick is to use the flashlight when you take your picture and zoom in as far as you can. It also has helped the app that we rock hounds that use it can correct the name when it does get it wrong. I have had a 90% accuracy rate with this app.
I have been trying the first app out and getting the stone wet and filling the frame and getting close up gets pretty accurate results. I think for these to work you really have to get a good photo and have a wet stone to see detail better
Thanks!
Hi, interesting video!
Just a brief comment on the porphyry. The term porphyry can be used basically for any type of volcanic rock if it has a porphyritic texture. Porphyritic texture means, that larger crystals (e.g. feldspars or quartz) are embedded in a fine-grade matrix. In fact, however, rhyolites exhibit commonly a porphyritic texture, so the app was not so wrong at this point.
Addition for the ironstone: Ironstone is usually composed of hematite or magnetite, therefore hematite was also a quite good guess.
Very good to know-thank you! I guess the apps were more accurate than I thought! 😊
grinzzzz 😊Porphyry Paarl is a most excellent South African wine. The grapes are grown on the side hill of a volcano....truly unique bubbly 🍾
Been watching Michigan Rocks for years, just found you. Great content, thank you!
I would think wetting the rocks for the picture and filling the frame as much as possible with the rock would help.
Love your username! A Series of Unfortunate Events was my favorite series growing up! Also good point about getting the rocks wet and taking closer pictures!
Taking pictures in natural sunlight also helps get a better picture by alot in my experience
@@timmydalamb1501 Did water help?
@@OregonDARRYL Doubful; I've just tried and granted I'm not sure what the rocks collected on the beach (south of france) are but the app kept thinking the rocks were glassy/had some transparency when they really didn't. I believe the shine from the water tricks the app.
I use rock identifier, and it works really great for me , there's been a few with the wrong answer, but I'm also a beginner so It could be identifying something in the rock and not the whole rock... thanks for the comparison video ... I picked 1 and done hahaha
Oh yeah, what a great video idea here, loved this! I'm not great at identifying rocks, not even good, but I will listen to everyone's opinions and that goes for an app too! This was cool to see, thanks!
Thank you so much! I was actually surprised that it was pretty accurate for more “common” rocks! I was expecting a complete dud!
@@AgateAriel yeah, I agree, it's good for most rocks, and it gets me started with others
Nice hooded sweater! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the rock id apps! Have a great day!
Thank you! Glad you liked the video! 😊
The stones are very beautiful with various motifs. I am a stone craftsman, every stone that has a good motif, I shape it as a ring to decorate my finger.
That is so cool! I would like to learn how to do that one day!
Thank you Ariel, I have just signed up to the rock identifier app, have just id'd most of my unusual rocks. The first was a green & cream striped rock which I had no idea of & it's Amazonite.:)
Jeez, that company now makes rocks 🙄
I have the first app and i mainly use it to identify if it is hard enough to tumble. I hope the technology gets better in the future.
Thank you so much for showing what the apps are like - including how obnoxious some apps are with pushing subscriptions and ads!
If someone wants to pay for a subscription, awesome! But it's a hard "no" for me. So, I guess I'll stick to Reddit and Google.
GPT-4 vision seems to do a good job if you also tell it where the rocks came from,
I literately just commented on another video about the first app 😅😅 I’ve been binge watching all your videos I didn’t notice you made this one until now but it’s ok love the videos ❤
Actually it was correct with the fossil. The fossil is likely made of limestone or sandstone. It got the geode correct too. Geode is just a word for a hollow rock that gets filled with quartz. Quartz is what it is.
Great video...thanks so much for posting this. I tried to down load the rock identifying app and had a bit of trouble 😅 getting it successfully onto my phone.
Yeah I was actually pretty impressed by that one! Hope you can get it to work!
I use the first rock identifier and it actually worked fairly well
I might put the stone or fossel or mineral on a black or white background.
White for dark stone, black for light stones.
Wet your rock all way around. Fill your screen with clear image. Rotate rock and take different pics. Take specimen in bright light such as outside in sunlight. If unable I might use a flashlight to gain reflections, deposits, veins etc...
Good hounding, hope you find something amazing!
That first app lets you add your own entry, so if it doesn’t ID it you can add your own information.
How much do make money of rocks
Knowing the rock can actually be important. Sounds crazy, I know, but there are actually dangerous rocks like Cinnabar, Stibnite, Quartz (yes, Quartz), Arsenopyrite, Fluorite, Phenacite, Erionite, all the asbestos varieties. We think of rocks as harmless (unless someone throws oner at you or it falls on your head), but many are poisonous or cancer causing. For the most part, they are safe. Just don't go licking them (which I hope is not a problem) and since you tumble them in water, exposure to dust (quartz) is not usually an issue, just always wash your hands.
Oh.... One more tip, just incase it's actually necessary for someone to say it outload: Do Not Eat Rocks - They may not be good for you (and are hard to chew).

The reason, more often than not, is because it is either a scam that does not work, or it is an app piggybacking off of another service that costs money (so the app marks up that price, so it can make money too)
I also have that first app you should put the flashlight on so it will be able to see the color better
None would work for me without payment
I realise this video is very old but this might help others who encounter the full size upgrade ad that you can't seem to get past. Right in the very top corner of the ad, you will notice a very tiny 'x'. It's barely noticeable and sometimes you have to wait 5 seconds for it to appear, but it will enable you to continue with the app. Don't click anything else, they are just false flag links.
Looks like a quartz crystal material to me in that geode.
Agreed! That’s why I said the app was half accurate. It did it’s best with what it saw! 😅
It did identify the host rock the fossils were in.
Those apps are usually a waste of money. I like "Rock & Minerals". A field guide... for each state. Usually very accurate.
Something fell out of my ear, making a clunky sound when it hit the floor.
It sparkles in sunlight.
It’s not very large, wondering if I need to put it back where it came from?
MINE THOUGHT GUM WAS A ROCK 😂😂😂😂
The first app will let you take many pictures but it doesn't identity them correctly obviously
Yes definitely!
How do you get that all rock and fossil pls i want that to ! Plss😊
For the geode, it is made of quartz crystals i don't see it being wrong just because it didn't say geode.
Thanks for this video ❤
Ariel in serious mode 😊
The Rock Identifier is $29.99 a year, so that's not too bad if you're willing to pay.
Yes I suppose that’s true! Just one more thing though, ya know?
It is not for geodes
the part about the geode is ridiculous. A geode can be various things! that's like asking it to identify 'is this round and hollow, or not'.
Can u show us how to know if is a rock under the ‘light’?
Do you mean like what they look like with a flashlight to them? The translucency? I will definitely put it on the list! 😊
@@AgateAriel yup, something like that, thx 😊
Google lens does the job and it's all free
Just wondering, did you try "google lens" ?
This is a rock
This is a pebble
This is a stone
Take notes class, there will be a test on Friday
Stone identifier was a complete garbage app. 4 ads to see one rock result and it wasn't even close
Yeah, I was slightly disappointed! Glad I tried them though!
Thanks , i got 5 years o geology - im old - im having troubles - im seeking just metiorites , and i need to be absolutely sure - or i need definitive tests . Got any ideas? , keep looking down!
I got two different results once I use a picture of my rock at different angles. I don’t know which one it is. One of them said it is argonite and the other one is Citrine I don’t know which one it is please help
I come here just to here her say "egg it"
Howtobasic💀
Tip- Type in FREE Before app preference
Oh I will have to try that!
One of my apps identified what I thought was a moss agate as a shell fossil today what’s the first time I seen fossil come up. It’s definitely not a fossil.
This app correctly id my fossils.
how to identify stones, a very good video to watch friends, greetings from Indonesian agate seekers.
Thank you so much! So cool-greetings! 😊
Does the app only identify the kinda rock it is or it also tells you if its gold or something?
I’m not entirely sure actually!
Is there a book you would recommend for a newbie like me to identify rocks?
Yes check out a rock book for your state if you enjoy rockhounding! 😊
I am new to rock tumbling. And I enjoy your videos of identifying rocks. But I have been trying different ways of tumbling. Would it be possible or do you already know if it's better to tumble with plastic pellets or ceramic pellets? That would be a great video for some of us beginner's!
Or maybe no pellets at all?
Good question! Ceramic media and pellets are really helpful when tumbling as they can help get into the nooks and crannies of the rocks. Typically ceramic media is used for stage 1 and 2 and plastic pellets are used for stage 3 and 4. However, often I use ceramic media up until the end. It can definitely be personal preference too!
@@AgateAriel thanks for the helpful information.
Limestone is made of organic material over millions of years 😂
Have you tried the app "lens" ?
I haven’t! I will have to look into it!
@Agate Ariel Thank you for the quick reply- a rarity these days
So disappointed. If it could be five different rocks, it’s almost like asking a weatherman about the weather for next week.
Right! I was hoping for a bit better accuracy!
Hi

Try Google lens
Video yg bagus. Selamat menikmati hari indah anda teman👍
Thank you! 😊
I have this gem identifier app i try to identify thus one looks like quartz but it was i tried again but it said quartzite
What's an eggit?
Lol! That's what I always thought she was saying but she's saying agate. It's a Minnesota kind of accent (aches-sent) lol 😂😂 jk
Yup. I don't think any of the apps are very good i have a couple that require you to do what you should do anyway. Scratch test, cleavage, crystal shape, etc. Keep the goodness coming. Be happy, safe and stay healthy 😷⚒
Right! I was impressed it even got some of them but overall it’s always better to go the traditional route!
Guys i found a rock called Agate how much is it worth it ?
I was able to identify a fossil on the app. Wish I could post a screenshot of it lol
Oh that’s awesome!
i believe the firs one
Camp Dells❤
I normally use google images to identify what rock/fossil it is 😂 and it’s not accurate most of the time😅 .. but I’m a bit old school and normally (try to) use a small book about rocks/fossils in Denmark, but I find it difficult to use because I don’t feel like the ones in the book corresponds with what I find😅and what I find, isn’t normally in the book…
Can anyone (in Denmark) please give me a good “how/where to find rock/fossils in Denmark” book?😅, as I said, I’m a bit old school and enjoy the feeling of a book in my hands..😅 size of the book doesn’t really matter, but would be good if it was travel sized😊
Please and thank you 🙏
It’s not free
Ok
i have milky qurts
Why shouldn't someone pay for the App? After all someone has put in the time and effort and resources into creating it... by the way congrats on your great channel - really well done...
Yes I do agree with that! I just don’t like that so many companies are switching to subscription services charging each month instead of a one time payment.
@@AgateAriel fair enough that - yes agreed, subscription is a bit annoying..
It someone developed an app. Hrs. Days months, continuous security, new features. That's how they intend to make a living. Don't think they're getting rich.
I happily pay for a plant app.
How I sale my black diamond
I’m not sure! Hopefully you figure it out though!
Sell not sale
Black diamond or hematite? I'm used to Alaska black diamond but people are trying to pass hematite off as real Alaska black. The price of both has gone way down. It's all about what is in fashion at the time.
Hay hello how are you
The woman giving the narration is nauseating facial expressions
its called a book lol but informative video lol
Agreed! Just wait for part two 🤓
even if i didnt like rocks id still watch these videos because she is a cutie
