    Also on some uprights, that middle pedal lifts the dampers on the bass strings.

    Thanks, my 1900 piano practice pedal wasn't working and now I figure the felt just deteriorated. The mechanism inside the piano is working, but I was wondering how it was supposed to dampen the sound.

    Thanks Michael. I'm restoring a 50 y.o. spinet, with only two (2) pedals, and the action may require some care once I've cleaned and cared for the drop-down action. Have a Happy New Year.

    The middle pedal on my grand piano lifts the dampers on the bass strings only

      I had a piano that did the same. Not sure why it was different.

      Yup! Bet you have a Yamaha or a Kawai? I think Pearl River did that for a bit too...

      @@sparklingwiggle A yes! The infamous Howards... Doing this with the third pedal was a way to save money that most customers never noticed.

      @@thepianotechnicianacademy9560 Most of the uprights in the past had a bass sustain middle pedal. The practice pedal became popular around 2000s since it made the middle pedal more practical and useful. My old spinet from the 1980s used a bass sustain.
