Hi @davidkaiser810 Thanks for watching and sharing your experience! Sorry to hear about your memory issues, but glad we could provide a helpful resource for you. Good luck with your move and new life in the Philippines! 😊
I have been to Philippines 14 times since 2016. I know how hard it is for me to find clothes there, as I am 6'4" tall and 250 pounds. I have found maybe one or two t-shirts shirts there, one pair of shorts and one pair of sandals in all the places that I visited. Almost impossible to find your size if you are a big guy.
Hi @knightwhite99 Thanks for sharing your experience! 😊 It can definitely be challenging to find clothing options in the Philippines, especially for taller or larger individuals like yourself. I'm glad you've been able to find some items during your visits, but it's great that you're thinking ahead and considering how you might do things differently in the future. 🤔 Any other questions or topics you'd like to discuss?
Hi @steveclemis Thank you so much for your kind words! It means a lot to me that my videos have been helpful and enjoyable to watch. I'm glad you find them informative, and I'll continue to do my best to provide valuable content for our viewers. 😊
Take a look at Lazada. They deliver COD, and allow returns. I'm 6'6" 250 lbs. I know how difficult life is trying to acquire clothing for life here. Been here since 2012, and at times go to a tailor. . . but not really into that lifestyle anymore. Also I went into a rather large "Tee Shirt" printing store and found they carried my size in Tee shirts as well as tank top. Anyway good luck from Zambales . . .
Hi @terrymichalski4707 😊 Thank you for sharing your experience! Yes, Lazada is a great option for online shopping in the Philippines, especially since they offer COD and returns. It can be challenging to find clothing that fits well here, so it's great that you've discovered a store that carries your size. Good luck with your newfound convenience! 😊
Hi @marcrichard7251 Thanks so much for your kind words! It's always great to hear that our content is helping and inspiring others. Best of luck with your own adventures in the Philippines! 😊
I’ve study this this for yrs now Paul. In my opinion u did a really great job. Thanks for the help. One thing I’ve never heard about was the pen number for ssi. Again thanks.
Hi @Chazzz61 Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! Yeah, I know, I was just getting started on that roundup when I realized it was time to stop recording 😅 But no worries, there's always next time! 😊
Hi @ngb768 "Thank you so much for your kind words! It's always great to hear that our content is helpful and informative. Best of luck with your own move to the Philippines, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need further assistance 😊"
Paul, you really gave a lot of information that is really usable in the Philippines. I really appreciate that. You are the only one that really gets to the point and help out us guys who are getting retirement age (me now age 57). You help lots of us out Paul. Every question, I had in mind was answered in this video. As a military veteran and person who lived in the Philippines in 1991, Clark Air Base, really needed great advice on how to plan ahead in the future on possible retirement in the Philippines, sincerely thank you Paul.
David Darden I was stationed in Subic 20 years before you. Remember, there are a lot of good places to live in the PI. that aren’t in the Clark area (ie. Angeles).
Hi @daviddarden1915 🙏 Thank you for your kind words! It's gratifying to know that my experiences and tips are helpful to fellow retirees like yourself. I'm glad I could provide valuable insights based on my own journey in the Philippines. If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to ask. 😊
You are so pleasnt to listen to. Unlike those Fake ass vloggers feigning their interest and enthusiasm by being so perky and dramatic. You are just real. I lived there once. Met some guys with silver hair, who were also cool.
Hi @eduardochavacano Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! It's great to hear from someone who has personal experience living in the Philippines. Silver-haired expats can be quite the characters, can't they? 😊
Thanks for the tips! You have probably already heard these, but in case you have not, here are a few tips for you. If you want a VPN you dont have to wait until you come back to the US to get one, you can go online and get one anytime. I use Surfshark when i'm in Asia and want to watch US netflix or whatever. There are a lot of VPNs to choose from but many of them will not work with US Netflix. I wear multifocus glasses too and I got my new glasses from Owndays in Thailand for half of what they charge in the US. They are good quality. They have a lot of locations in Philippines too. There are several banks in the US, and I think Charles Schwab is probably the most widely known (ok technically they are not a bank), that refund all overseas ATM fees. Many guys have their SS checks auto-deposited to their US account and just go the Philippines ATM when they need funds, and they only withdraw what they need for the rent, a few days walking around money, etc. Better safe than sorry...
Hi @ActaNonVerba1961 😊 Thank you so much for sharing your tips! Yes, getting a VPN before coming to the Philippines is definitely a good idea. And wow, half the price of new glasses from Owndays in Thailand is amazing! 🕶️ I'll have to check out their locations here in the Philippines as well. 🇵🇭 Interesting point about Charles Schwab refunding overseas ATM fees. I'll definitely look into that for my husband and me. It's always good to have more options when it comes to managing our finances while living abroad. 💰
I really appreciate this video, and your other ones. I can tell you are honest and giving the straight goods! Look back at your "Why I moved" video from July 2019: You look much younger in this video; much older in that one. It's true that no medications and living in a happier place make a big difference. I haven't seen all your videos yet but I which you had more outside views. Maybe you could take your cell phone outside, or show going to the beach, etc. Some of your videos have a great outside caption photo, but it's still just a sofa+wall inside. If you cut your videos you could do voice-overs too. It would be so cool to see what you do during the day. (Then I can dream about retiring and not working in a cubicle with no windows!) Also, congrats on hitting so many views and subscribers. Anyway I'm 47 but Philippines is definitely a place I will consider retiring!
Hi @klyons217 Thanks for your kind words! I'm glad you find my content helpful and honest. Yes, I do look younger in some of my older videos, haha! Living in a happier place definitely makes a big difference. I appreciate your feedback on showing more outside views, and I will consider doing that in future videos. Voice-overs are also a great idea, I'll have to give it a try. And wow, congrats on considering retiring to the Philippines! It's definitely a beautiful country with a lot to offer. 😊
keep up the great stories, Paul. your channel showed up on my feed one day and i find myself watching/listening to your videos- while i'm working. drinks on me someday.
Hi @bert671 Thanks so much! I appreciate your kind words and support. It's great to hear that my content has been helpful to you, even while you're working. I'll keep sharing my experiences and adventures here in the Philippines. Maybe we can meet up for drinks someday! 😊
Coffee, Hand tools hammer, screwdrivers, pliers ECT they can be hard to find! cordless tools (220 electric there)!! Metric tools, Learn metric 50 kilo sack of rice is NOT 50 lbs! Good thing to know before you volunteer to carry a sack up the mountain when it's 100° lol so I hear!
I buy Great Taste Granules coffee. Its instant but I drink it black and it's as good as any I have found. The brewed coffee, even in good restaurants, is awful. I have given up on it when we travel. I just take my own and a travel cup and make it in my room. I am tall so most of the tricycles are too short for me. I got the number for a couple that have higher cabs and call them when I can, especially if I am going some distance.
Hi @thomasgordon1792 Grateful for your comment! Yeah, finding tools and other essentials in the Philippines can be challenging at times. It's important to learn the metric system here and understand the weight of items in kilos rather than pounds. Good tip about carrying a sack up a mountain! 😂
Hi @phatboied Thanks so much! Exciting to hear you're planning the move to Dumaguete! It's a lovely place, and I'm sure you'll find it just as wonderful as we do. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need any tips 😊
I've been here for 20yrs and I have a direct deposit to BPI for my SSI retirement and have never had any problems. I'm in the Bicol area Cam. Sur. Love it here, bought one hector on the main road and backs up to farm land. Came here January 2002, got my SSI retirement in 2010. They sent me checks and I couldn't cash them, after 3month I went to BPI and they let me open a dollar account and helped me file for direct deposit, just had to wait till the checks cleared by then I had my first direct deposit, it's been great ever since. Have a great day.
Hi @donniestricklin3915 Thanks for sharing your experience in the Philippines! It's great to hear that you've had a positive experience with BPI and their direct deposit services. Congratulations on being able to open a dollar account and receive your retirement benefits directly. We appreciate your input and are glad to hear that you're enjoying life in the Bicol area! 😊
LBC is one of the good shipping companies. I will send the XL Box (theirs), unlimited weight, $97, limited quantity of 12 for each item (more if they don't pay attention), sending electronics cost more. Last I heard was $40. You are correct Paul, buy and ship ALL the clothes you need. They don't have alot of sizes there. Stock up on everything possibly you need.
Hi @boomj6915 Thank you for sharing your insights! LBC is indeed a reliable shipping company, and it's great to know they offer unlimited weight options for their XL box. I'll keep that in mind when sending my own shipments. And yes, it's important to stock up on essentials before making the move to the Philippines. Thanks for watching! 😊
Hi Paul, in regards to credit card, I have Chase and when I visited Philippines for 21 days I went online. In Chase dashboard I let them know that I am traveling overseas and the country I will be staying. Selected all my cards and the length of time I will be traveling. On my return flight I had to overnight in Taiwan and I had to call 800 number to let Chase know that I was in Taiwan and I needed to use my my card. The little system worked. I set date to the day after I I arrive in US then change everything back when I got back home. Great video
Hi @patrickmctube Thanks for sharing your experience with credit cards in the Philippines! It's great to hear that Chase's overseas travel notice system worked well for you. Yeah, it's important to be prepared and informed about how to use your credit card while traveling abroad 👍
Hi @jackj.4304 Thanks a lot! It's always helpful to hear from fellow retirees who have made the move to the Philippines. I'm glad you found my content useful. If you have any questions or need further advice, feel free to ask! 😊
You mentioned the hospitals there and a few times being misdiagnosed. I wonder if you could do a blog about those in particular. And maybe add some stuff about your impression of the doctors-hospitals etc
Hi @Bill-xs4zu Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Old Dog New Tricks! Yes, I'd be happy to share my experiences with the healthcare system in the Philippines in a future blog post. I appreciate your interest in this topic and I'll definitely consider including it in my content soon. 😊
You nailed it Paul, I am a 65 yr. old white guy in St. Louis, Mo. Hoping to come to PI in January and scope out for possible retirement as soon as Spring. Do have a Filipina friend building a house just North of Manilla for her retirement so 1 connection in the Islands at least.
Hi @KenOworldTm8690 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It's great to hear that you're considering retiring in the Philippines. January is a great time to visit and get a feel for the place. Having a connection already in the form of your Filipina friend will definitely make the transition smoother. Look forward to possibly meeting you when you arrive! 😊
Hi @theonlygeezer1 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It's great to hear that you've had a positive experience with buying clothes in Cebu. I agree, it's important to avoid the mail scams and get good quality items at a fair price. I'll keep that in mind for my future purchases as well. 😊
Hey Paul. It’s great that your subscriber numbers are growing so rapidly. 👍👍. I know that you attributed the growth to people being stuck at home and therefore having more time to devote to TH-cam. There can of course be multiple reasons for the growth but my own guess is that the biggest growth factor is the recent monetisation of your channel. 💰💴 TH-cam apparently is more active in promoting those channels that are monetised because that is how TH-cam generates income for itself. Whatever the reason(s), I am very happy for you and Mae. Cheers from Perth, Western Australia 🇦🇺 🦘🦘
Hi @KOHTAOMURDERSDEATHISLAND Thank you so much! Grateful for your kind words and support. Yes, monetization has definitely helped boost our viewership and engagement. It's great to have TH-cam's support in promoting our channel. Appreciate it from Perth, Australia! 😊
Paul look into Google-Fi phone plan. The phone basically works for most of 150 countries. When entering other country the phone is activated in that country automatically and uses local towers. In the USA, this phone uses Tmobil, Verizon, and USCellular towers. Pixel phones has a built-in e-sim, no need for physical sim and also has a vpn with no extra charge. None google phone requires sim card. The number you activated with the phone works where ever country of destination.
Hi @eno9226 Thanks for sharing your thoughts on moving to the Philippines! 😊 I'll definitely look into Google Fi as an option for staying connected while traveling abroad. Appreciate the tip!
Just saw your video. I planned my move 2 years in advance. I shipped 22 boxes and 4 big suitcases. Only 1 thing I never needed once here (a big dehumidifier). Many more companies for shipping, forget LBC! Expensive and no better than others at much better prices. For international calls and texts you can sign up and put a load on it, cheap (Globe).
Hi @rocketranger1000 Thanks for sharing your experience with us! 😊 It's great to hear that you planned your move 2 years in advance and were able to ship 22 boxes and 4 big suitcases. Yes, a dehumidifier can be useful here in the Philippines, especially during the rainy season. I'm glad you found a better option for international calls and texts through Globe. We appreciate your feedback! 👍
Good advice on everything.. living in Thailand , i could not get a hard contact lens only soft lens in Thailand. I ended up getting my daughter send to me and no problem. Clothes wise , I'm the same height n weight as you and had no problem finding my size. I agree with you on everything living in S.E. Asia.
I don't think the products from home has to be an issue for you. I'm sure there are lots of guys your videos have helped that will be flying over to check things out that can bring stuff for you. I travel 6 weeks on/off to Thailand and always contact friends a week prior, tell them the stores I'll be visiting and pick up what they need and tape receipt to product(like some Trader Joes stuff they can't get). They just pay me when they get it. I also don't have to lug all my stuff back and forth, they always offer me the opportunity to leave stuff their place(my coffee machine, umbrella, scooter, etc). PS, great videos lately! Thanks
Hi @winduncan9818 Thanks so much for your kind words and support! 😊 It's great to hear that you have a system in place for getting the things you need from back home when you travel. Lifting some of the burden off of yourself and your friends is definitely a good idea. I'm glad to hear that you're finding my videos helpful, and I'll keep them coming! 📹
Paul, when my husband moved here, he brought more of his carpentry tools such as drills, wrenches, hammers, etc., hahaha I can only count in hands the clothes he brought, only his favorite polos, coats and ties and shoes, lol
Hi @frenchandpinayssimplelifei1174 Thanks for sharing! Yeah, it's common for people to bring fewer belongings when moving to the Philippines compared to what they would bring to other countries. The climate is warm and humid here, so there's less need for heavy coats and layers of clothing. And many people find that they don't need as much furniture or household items either since local stores offer similar products at more affordable prices. Plus, the culture here values minimalism and simplicity, so it can be a good way to live more sustainably and with less stuff! 😊
Hi @mipileto871 Thanks for sharing your experience with us! Yes, the Philippines has a wide range of affordable shopping options, from malls to local markets like Tiange and Greenhills. It's great that you're enjoying yourself here! 😊
Hi @perryrobichaux Thanks so much! I'm glad you found our video helpful in your planning process. Good luck with your move to the Philippines, and feel free to reach out if you have any more questions or need further assistance. 😊
Nice video Paul. LBC has different size boxes $40-$90. There is no weight limit. We sent 7 boxes to PI when we came out. Well worth the $550 shipping costs. It took 2 months. Also, from what I recall all (800) numbers are free calls on Skype. Bringing clothe is a good idea, especially bringing smaller sizes as you will lose weight.
I've heard nothing good about LBC Balikbayon service. Depending on where you are located . I left out of Jacksonville Florida.and have used UMAC to send boxes over here since before I moved over here . When ever I go home I will send one or two boxes home with things that are hard to get over here. Mainly hobby supplies , as I build plastic models . Yes there are some hobby shops in Manila. There is even a small one here in Dumaguete. But they don't carry the brands and things I want and need. AS for mail I rent a PO box it is easier. As there really isn't any home delivery . And yes there are times when you don't want to rely on the mail system here.
Hi @philippinesandbeyond36 Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and tips! 😊 $40-$90 sounds like a great range of box sizes to choose from with LBC. And wow, two months is a bit longer than expected for shipping, but glad to hear it arrived safely! 🚪 And awesome to know about the free Skype calls on 800 numbers, thanks for sharing that helpful tip! 📞 Bringing clothes in smaller sizes is a great idea, as we tend to shed some weight when moving abroad, haha. 😅 Appreciate your comment and I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
COVID-19 die in The Philippines, because of its warm weather. Lets go! Can't wait to have a fun life over there. That grin in your face says it all, you lucky guy.
Hi @rhaevi9980 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 😊 Yes, the warm weather in the Philippines can be an advantage when it comes to coping with COVID-19. We've been fortunate so far and have been able to keep the virus at bay here. Looking forward to welcoming you to our little corner of paradise soon! 🌴
Really good video Paul!! Lots of good info. I know it will help a lot of folks thinking about spending some time over there. The medical is a BIGGIE!!!! They need to know that a set-aside emergency fund is essential!!! You need to be able to buy a ticket and fly out tomorrow!!!! 3,4,5000 dollars for next day ticket!! Good info. Thank you.
Hi @jaytrance4986 Thanks so much! 😊 Yeah, medical costs can be a huge challenge for expats in the Philippines. It's crucial to have a set-aside emergency fund, as you mentioned, to cover unexpected medical expenses. We've had our fair share of medical emergencies here, and it's always better to be prepared! 🤞
They don't know what they are missing Paul. Look at that grin in your face. You're in paradise, you look younger than your age. Old guys with young cute chicks having fun of their life. A fantasy that will come true. What more can an old guy can ask for? Instead of a D.O.M. living a boring life in the U.S. You can never get that anywhere in U.S.
Hi @rhaevi9980 "Thanks so much for your kind words! It's great to see someone embracing their golden years and living life to the fullest. I couldn't agree more, this is truly paradise and I feel younger than my age too 😊"
Wow, I got an ad at the beginning of this video and two ads during the course of the video. You're gonna be rolling in the dough, Paul! ;-) The 'Liberace edition' reference had me laughing out loud -- I'd love to see that scooter! This was excellent content, well worth the commercial interruptions. Thanks!
Hi @kevinkennedy6875 Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts! 😊 It's great to hear from you and I'm glad you found the video entertaining despite the ads. Yes, I do have a soft spot for my scooter, Liberace edition or not! 😄
I've been visiting the Philippines for over 10 years (for various reasons - I now visit there because of my family in Tacloban), and I stay there anywhere from a month to four months at a time. It's been my personal experience that anything of good-to-excellent quality is expensive in the Philippines. Yes, the Philippines is super-cheap, IF you buy cheap stuff. Because there are a lot of low-quality goods sold there. It's a poor country, it's what people can afford. Lots of stuff sold there that could never be sold in the States - the seller in the States would get crushed on the returns and the warranty claims. If you want a good Samsung television (not some Chinese television brand you've never heard of), you will pay more for that in the Philippines than you can buy it for at Costco or Walmart or Best Buy in the States. Probably a lot more. Same with an AC unit. And towels, cars, and kitchen appliances, and Skecher shoes, and mobile phones, etc. We slag on Walmart so bad here in the States, but let me tell you, after you live in the Philippines for 6 months, you'd KILL to have a Walmart to go to. Hahahahahahaha! It's not cost-effective to ship a bunch of household stuff (or your car) over there, so be judicious in what you choose to buy in your home country and carry with you when you relocate to the Philippines. Make it count.
Hi @biff9999 Thanks for sharing your experience! Yeah, I agree, quality goods can be more expensive in the Philippines compared to other countries. It's essential to be mindful of what we buy and bring with us when moving here. 😊
Hi @G-y_m Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 😊 We've found that the healthcare system in the Philippines is generally quite good, with many high-quality hospitals and medical facilities. While it's true that Thailand and Singapore also have excellent healthcare systems, we've been happy with the care we've received here in Dumaguete. 🌴 Of course, it's always a good idea to do your own research and make informed decisions about your healthcare options, no matter where you choose to live. 💡
Hi Paul just a comment from toronto canada enjoy your channel. My wife from philippines sends carboard boxes to her family it takes about 6 weeks to arrive and they charge under $100. canadian per box, a box about 3ftx3ftx 4ft. shipped by boat to manila. All you need is an address or have it shipped to their warehouse and pick it up. This would be convient for people moving there as you would have about 6 weeks before your clothing arrives. I am retiring in sept and will be making my first trip there with my wife to check it out. cheers.
Hi @togobird1 Thanks so much for the input! Wow, that's a great idea for shipping clothes to the Philippines. Having a reliable and affordable shipping option is definitely important for people moving there. I'm glad you found our content helpful. Best of luck with your move in September! 😊
Hi Paul, Good informative video today. You are spot-on about the medical care there. It really is pathetic and your prescription info is accurate too. Did you mention the over the counter drugs? Just as pathetic. Now, I bring a good selection with me when I come. I learned my lesson with that several years ago. I hope you keep making information videos like this one. Thanks, Dan.
Hi @danielbaird7419 Thanks, Dan! Yeah, the medical care here can be challenging, but it's important to be prepared with what you need. Bringing over-the-counter meds can definitely help. Glad you find my videos helpful! 😊
Hi @robertcrotty9000 Thanks a lot! Appreciate your kind words. It's great to hear that you find our content helpful. If you have any questions or want to share your own experiences, feel free to reach out! 😊
Hi @jusskatin Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I'm glad you find my content helpful and informative. There's definitely a lot to learn about moving to the Philippines, but I'm happy to share what I know. 😊
Hi @joeysaipan Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Yeah, Guam is definitely an option worth considering for a quick getaway or shopping trip. We've been to Guam a few times ourselves and it's always a pleasure to visit 😊
Great vlog Paul. My question is: (possible future topic) what is the access for veterans to health care in the PI. Is there an arrangement with the VA. Perhaps you could conduct an investigation of the topic and report to an interested audience?
Hi @gregoriosmith6994 Thanks so much for your kind words! I'm glad you enjoy my vlogs. As for your question, I can definitely look into the access for veterans to healthcare in the Philippines. I will do some research and see if there are any arrangements with the VA or other organizations that provide healthcare services to American expats and veterans living here. I'll make sure to cover this topic in an upcoming video! 😊
Hi @bobquinn4968 Thanks for sharing your experience! Yeah, day 20 already feels like a breeze compared to when we first arrived here in Dumaguete 😂 Good luck with your move and settling in up in Subic! 👍
Paul, I'm confused. Nothing breathes better than cotton shirts, as long as theh aren't too thick. Lightweight t shirts, lightweight short sleeve button down shirts. Cotton polo shirts are usually too heavy though.
Hi @GUITARTIME2024 "Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I completely agree, cotton is definitely the way to go when it comes to breathability and comfort in this humid climate. Lightweight t-shirts and short sleeve button downs are great options. Polo shirts can be a bit too heavy for my taste as well. Glad you're enjoying the channel! 😊"
Fantastic video, but seemed to end prematurely at 33:35 for me. Should there have been more? Would love a part two - I agree with those who are saying this is one of your best videos ever.
Hi @thatguy7119 Thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed the video 🙏 There will be more content coming soon, stay tuned! 😊
Hi @vwandtiny3769 Ah, another fellow expat sharing their experiences! Shaving cream can be pricey here, that's for sure. But hey, at least the contact lens prescriptions are affordable! 😅 Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
Very hard to source certain items, especially if it's name brand. Have do your research. Stuff that's sold in the United States even if it's made in China or else where. It's hard to find it there. I used globe for my phone service there, but had to unlock my phone. Can get kinda pricy if you use alot of data.
Hi @metalsliver4325 Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us! 😊 Yes, sourcing certain items in the Philippines can be challenging, especially if they're name-brand products. Doing research beforehand can definitely help. And I completely agree about Globe being a bit pricey when it comes to data usage. We've found that using WiFi whenever possible and setting limits on mobile data can help mitigate those costs. Thanks for watching! 😊
Nice Info But as for shipping I always use Atlas just because I have never had a problem with missing items like i did with LBC and its unlimited weight for $100 and I never thought about my mail i will check that out
Hi @Grumpyoldman61 Thanks for sharing your experience with shipping companies! Yeah, unlimited weight for $100 is definitely a great deal. Will have to look into that further. 😊
The gold is plentiful. Just got to be there and heavens gates will open.....so many young girls like an older bf. friend or just mentor/role model - enjoy !
Hi @perryrobichaux Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It's great to hear that you're considering moving to the Philippines. It's a beautiful country with a lot to offer, and I'm sure you'll find it to be a wonderful place to live. 😊
i hear you, i try to buy pants, mainly jeans. i get them to fit my waist but i couldn't get my lenght usually thats the same as my waist so i have to have them altered
Hi @kevindoolittle2 "Thanks for sharing your experience with buying pants in the Philippines! Yeah, it can be challenging to find clothes that fit well, especially if you're used to a different fit and style. Hopefully, more tailors and fashion stores will start offering customizable options for expats and locals alike!"
Have you looked into MediCard? Some of the lesser plans are very inexpensive, and if you're only looking for major medical coverage for something like a major bike accident, etc. -- might be the way to go. What are your thoughts?
Hi @john_sparks Thanks for sharing your insights! Yeah, MediCard is definitely an option worth exploring. I'll check it out and see if it fits our needs. Appreciate the suggestion! 😊
I can concur with Paul's wisdom. It is almost impossible to buy clothes our size here in the Philippines. Fortunately, my wife has a relative that can make clothes. My SS is deposited in an American bank. I take money out via an ATM.
Hi @bryanlint9327 Thanks for sharing your experience! 😊 Yes, it can be challenging to find clothing that fits well here in the Philippines, especially if you're used to a different size and style from back home. It's great that you have a resourceful wife who can make clothes for you! And good to know that you have access to your SS deposit through an American bank and can withdraw cash via ATM. 💰
I've bought my glasses from Zenni online for years. Very inexpensive. I bought progressive bifocals for like 85 bucks. What kind of fabric if not cotton? I just called Shwaub and will set that up in a couple of weeks. I have a VPN already so I'll be able to use American Netflix. Mail will go to my sister here or more likely to daughter dear in California. Stellar information, sir!
Hi @TheBuddyShowWorldwide Thanks for sharing your experience and insights! 😊 Yes, Zenni Optical is a great option for affordable glasses, especially their progressive bifocals. As for fabric options, there are several alternatives to cotton, such as polyester, nylon, or silk. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it's worth researching which one suits your needs best. 😊
I had to go to the hospital in Manila and they we’re better than the USA 🇺🇸 at least for my treatment of food poisoning. The female Doctor also had a home 🏠 in the states and we hit it off really good. I paid cash 💰 for all the test they ran and it only cost $100 US dollars.
Hi @marcrichard7251 Thanks for sharing your experience! It's great to hear that you had a positive experience at the hospital in Manila, especially when it comes to the quality of care and the cost-effectiveness. It's always reassuring to know that there are affordable and high-quality medical options available in a new country. 😊
Did you make a video on what it costs to live there by chance? Also are the doctors any good ? Also can you get medication in a timely fashion. I’m a diabetic on insulin and was wondering how that all worked. Thanks
Hi @hddm3 Hi Old Dog New Tricks! Yeah, I did make a video on the cost of living in Dumaguete, check it out here: [video link]. As for the doctors, they're generally good but it can be challenging to get medication in a timely manner. I've had some issues with that as well, especially since I'm diabetic and need my insulin on time. It's important to have a good relationship with your doctor and pharmacist to ensure you get the meds you need when you need them. Hope that helps! 😊
Hi @dancronin6436 Thanks so much! Glad to hear that my channel has inspired you to consider expat life in the Philippines 😊 It can be a wonderful lifestyle, but it's important to do your research and prepare thoroughly before making the move. Good luck with your planning!
With Talkatone and Textnow you can also sent and receive text messages. For me they worked great in the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, India and Mexico.
Hi @michaelpeltzman8331 Thanks for sharing your experience with using communication apps in different countries! It's great to hear that you've had positive experiences with Talkatone and Textnow in various parts of Asia and Latin America. As a fellow expat living in the Philippines, I can appreciate the convenience of having reliable messaging options when traveling or living abroad 😊
For folks coming to Manila, you can get most those things from Greenhills Mall, among others. But, bring a good reliable laptop with an HDMI-out port and get a 40' TV here with suitable specs ( i bought a Sharp brand with 1080P/60fps/Gaming mode) to use as your monitor, starting at $150. Just be sure you'll have enough distance because 40' is huge for a monitor and you'll be moving your head a lot (smaller sizes may not support 1080P)... Google FI will give you a USA number, for relatively cheap, that works here, check it out. I don't use it because they don't support Virtual SIMs. I have a dual-sim phone but one sim is virtual which you can get supported by other carriers for more money.
Hi @1dir951 Thanks for the tips! Greenhills Mall is definitely on our list of places to check out. We'll make sure to bring a reliable laptop with an HDMI port and look into getting a TV here. And good to know about Google Fi, we'll check it out. Appreciate your input! 😊
Hi @robertc.fisher3214 Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts! It's always helpful to hear from others who have made the move to the Philippines. If you have any questions or need further insights, feel free to ask!
Woah Paul! What do you mean, You don’t have to file US tax anymore. I’m 66 y.o., retired drawing Soc Sec. and last April I had to file and pay taxes. I make sure I’m in US in the spring each year to do taxes. Are you saying retirees in a foreign country don’t have to file taxes? I’ve sent many balikbayan boxes to PI and my cost is $110.00 from WV.
Hi @danielbaird7419 Thanks for sharing your experience! Yes, as a US citizen living in the Philippines, you are not required to file US taxes if you meet certain requirements, such as being a bona fide resident of a foreign country and having no tax home in the US. However, it's important to consult with a tax professional to ensure you're meeting all the necessary requirements and taking advantage of any tax benefits available to you. And congrats on sending those balikbayan boxes from WV! 😊
Hi @bster13 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Yeah, we considered other expat communities but ultimately decided on Dumaguete due to its slow pace of life and laid-back atmosphere. We love it here and find it a great place to live and grow old 😊
Hey Paul, your videos are being monetized because I'm watching your video here and they've got a commercial slapped right at the 6:41 mark.... Congratulations man 🎉👍
Hi @zayneunderwood1488 Thanks so much! Yeah, TH-cam has been doing that more often lately. It can be frustrating when it happens during an interesting part of the video, haha. Thanks for watching and supporting my channel!
Hey Paul - You can set up a VPN from where you are - no need to do it in the US. Here in Thailand, I've found ExpressVPN to work really well. You can install it on your computer, phone etc. Easy, and I can access my Social Security no problem.
Hi @Michaelw777.52 Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! It's great to hear from someone who's considering moving to the Philippines and seeking advice from experienced expats like me. I hope my channel helps you prepare for your new life here. Good luck with your transition! 😊
Hi @garyburgmylifeandtimes6354 Thanks for watching and commenting! I appreciate your feedback. Sorry about the abrupt ending, I'll make sure to wrap up my sentences more neatly in future videos 😊
Hi @theonlygeezer1 "Wow, thanks for sharing your experience with Starling Bank! As a fellow expat, it's great to hear about the benefits of using it in the Philippines. We've also found it to be very convenient and cost-effective. Safe travels!"
Have you thought about trying to have some clothes made at a seamstress /tailor there? I had some T-shirts made a few years ago (the last time I was in Manila) and they were cheap and durable and most important of all they fit me properly.
Hi @mrG11 Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I've definitely considered that. There are plenty of talented seamstresses and tailors here in Dumaguete who can make high-quality clothes at affordable prices. It's definitely worth exploring as an alternative to fast fashion. 😊
I bought 2 of the biggest suitcases that is allowed and packed them full of Shirts/shorts/Deodorant/shoes/underwear/ect when I was moving here and glad I did,my money is also still in America and I use Remitly to transfer to my account here.
Hi @Gipper3670 Thanks for sharing your experience! 😊 It's great to hear that you were able to pack everything you needed for your move to the Philippines. Using Remitly to transfer your money is also a practical solution. It can be challenging to navigate the logistics of moving to a new country, but it sounds like you have a good system in place. Keep up the good work! 👍
What would you need for the government as you are a foreigner what kind of immigration paperwork and cost to stay for extended amounts of time. Do you need to leave then reenter after so long or will they allow you to just stay?
Hi @johnsantorawluszki715 Thanks for reaching out! As a US citizen married to a Filipino national, I've found the immigration process to be relatively straightforward. I applied for a Special Resident Retiree's Visa (SRRV) which allowed me to stay in the Philippines long-term without the need to leave and reapply. The cost was around $150 USD and the application process took a few months. It's best to consult with the Philippine Embassy or Consulate for the most up-to-date information on immigration requirements and fees.
I guess It's kind of late responding to this because it's 2022 now but again I enjoy your blogs they are helpful for me because of my plans to visit another 5 out of 5 stars can't claim to teach anything of help legally but I'm real good with things in the gray areas
Hi @randywilbanks8943 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It's never too late to join the conversation. I'm glad you find my blog helpful for your plans. Legalities can be tricky, but it's great that you're aware of the gray areas and can navigate them with ease. 😊
Hi @pinoi_cowboi3037 Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! It's great to hear from someone who is considering moving to the Philippines for retirement. I'm sure there are many things you would do differently if you were starting over, but it's never too late to make a change. Good luck with your planning and decision-making process! 😊
Metrobank is what I use as it allows me a Pensionsers Acct of which Social Security is wired directly to this Acct. I find it way cheaper and less headaches as have tried the other methods already! Again i have lived here 9 years so having my bank near me makes more sense!
Hi @gregmartin2455 Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad to be a source of inspiration for your move to the Philippines. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need help along the way! 😊
Hi @enniswhalen2428 Thanks for sharing your thoughts on moving to the Philippines! It's great to hear from someone who has already made the move and can offer valuable insights. I'm sure many of our viewers are eager to hear more about your experiences and what you would do differently if you had the chance. Keep sharing your wisdom and adventures with us! 😊
Meant to tell you Paul a couple of videos ago congrats on getting monetized.. if having a few ads on here help you it's worth ..it glad to see that you're getting what you deserve 👍
Hi @glenpendleton9087 Thank you so much! 😊 It means a lot to me when viewers support my channel and share their thoughts. I appreciate your kind words and am glad you find value in my content.
Hi @happyguy7836 Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! For a retired expat like us, it's crucial to choose the appropriate type of phone for our needs. As a GSM user, I recommend selecting a GSM-compatible phone for seamless communication in the Philippines. Safe travels! 😊
Hello Paul an Baby Mae... just subed. Not qued but watching for your insight an honesty. I will retire there in several years. I was over in Iraq for 3 years an traveled on r an r an thought Thailand was where I wanted to be but now it will be the Phillipines. Hi @dancronin6436 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Yeah, Dumaguete is a great choice for retirement, especially if you're looking for a slower pace of life and a more affordable cost of living. The community here is also very welcoming to expats. 😊
Hi @willieshoemaker8680 Thanks for watching! For the VPN number, I use a reputable VPN provider that offers multiple server locations worldwide. You can research and choose one that suits your needs. As for the mailbox, it's located here in the Philippines, as we wanted to be close to our home and community. Old Dog New Tricks April 20 2020.
Hey Paul ,,great info mate , when you send money from your bank in the USA via xoom and you pick it up at the Xoom office in the Philippines , do they give you USD or Paso when you collect it
Sir Dino , Since I know the answer more than happy to help you, Xoom is just an online service without any office in any country. You can send money from USA to Philippine to your bank account for example. If your bank account is USD, it becomes USD, if your bank account is Pesos, you get pesos. If you go to other money exchange stores, you get pesos. They will make money on fee for transferring money and exchange rate.
Hi @dondiboy6758 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 😊 It's great to hear that you find my observations relatable. #olddognewtricks #movingtophilippines #retireeinphilippines
Hi @garyault8970 Thanks for watching! Zoom is a video conferencing platform that allows you to connect with people from all over the world. You can use it for free or purchase a subscription for additional features. To use it for money transfers, you can link your bank account and send/receive funds to/from other users. 😊
Hi @johnsantorawluszki715 Thanks for watching! The forwarding service we use is called "MoveHub" and they provide us with a comprehensive list of available properties in Dumaguete, including addresses. It's been a lifesaver in our relocation process! 😊
Paul, your laugh always makes me laugh lol!
Hi @Texasbaboy Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! I'm glad my laugh could bring a smile to your face. 😄
My memory sucks. So it is great to have a reference to come back to get this information. Thanks Paul....
People are subscribing because your videos and entertaining and informative. Good channel!
Wow probably the best video yet?
Hi @marcrichard7251 Thanks so much for your kind words! It's always great to hear that our content is helping and inspiring others. Best of luck with your own adventures in the Philippines! 😊
I’ve study this this for yrs now Paul. In my opinion u did a really great job. Thanks for the help. One thing I’ve never heard about was the pen number for ssi. Again thanks.
Good point!
Oops 😬 stopped just as you were rounding up ! Good info though thanks Paul !
Hi @Chazzz61 Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! Yeah, I know, I was just getting started on that roundup when I realized it was time to stop recording 😅 But no worries, there's always next time! 😊
This gas been one of the best presentation I have seen from an Expat on this particular topic.
Hi @ngb768 "Thank you so much for your kind words! It's always great to hear that our content is helpful and informative. Best of luck with your own move to the Philippines, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need further assistance 😊"
Great video Paul, Thanks for using my suggestion for the topic, I'm honored. Lot's of good info, did not know the VPN thing, or the phone thing.
Thanks for the idea!
Interesting point about Charles Schwab refunding overseas ATM fees.
(Then I can dream about retiring and not working in a cubicle with no windows!)
Also, congrats on hitting so many views and subscribers.
Great video Paul, especially like that signature laugh of yours!
Thanks 👍
Thanks Paul. Retirement to the Philippines is something that I, at 65 and nearing the end of my working years, am considering.
You can do it!
Thank you my friend.Agreed! ☺🖒
Real life experience. Thank you for your great experiences from Canada.🙏
Our pleasure!
Thanks Paul, happy you picked my suggestion.
Thanks for the idea!
Coffee, Hand tools hammer, screwdrivers, pliers ECT they can be hard to find! cordless tools (220 electric there)!! Metric tools,
Learn metric 50 kilo sack of rice is NOT 50 lbs! Good thing to know before you volunteer to carry a sack up the mountain when it's 100° lol so I hear!
where are u in the filipines all those items are all over
I buy Great Taste Granules coffee.
Good stuff ODog. Thanks. I'm planning on the move
Thank you Buddy for sharing your practical thoughts "what i would do and bring to PH". Good stuff.
When I’m in Cebu bro never have problems with cloths, keep away from the mails and get good shirts and t shirts 100 paso
Where would you find clothes to fit big guys (fat) if not in the malls?
Asia.
Glad it was helpful!
There are so many selections at SM Mall, Asia Mall, greenhills and tiange at very cheap price. I enjoy shopping there.
Hi @mipileto871 Thanks for sharing your experience with us! Yes, the Philippines has a wide range of affordable shopping options, from malls to local markets like Tiange and Greenhills. It's great that you're enjoying yourself here! 😊
very informative and helpful video , thanks paul .
Magandag Gabi Po! Great subject matter.
The VPN I use has saved me a lot of headaches.
Salamat
Welcome!
Great tips Paul. Keep up the good work!!!
Hi @megavike1 Thank you so much! Appreciate your support! 😊
Thanks!
As the video started playing I could see eight yellow markers for upcoming adverts.
What about going to Thailand or Singapore or check ups or non emergency care?
Good stuff Paul. Thanks for sharing.
Hi @robertcrotty9000 Thanks a lot! Appreciate your kind words. It's great to hear that you find our content helpful. If you have any questions or want to share your own experiences, feel free to reach out! 😊
Very good videos with lots of real life information. Always appreciate solid info!!
Hi @jusskatin Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I'm glad you find my content helpful and informative. There's definitely a lot to learn about moving to the Philippines, but I'm happy to share what I know. 😊
You can always Fly to Guam for a week.its only $500-600 return.they have walmart and costco.
Gregorio Smith the phillipines is the only foreign country with a V/A located there it’s in manilla at the Embassy
Hi Paul. I am ignorant about TH-cam. Can you tell me if you choose the ads? Or does TH-cam?
google picks them
Day 20? Lucky! More like day 40 up here in Subic!
American banks wont accept a foreign address
Hi @thatguy7119 Thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed the video 🙏 There will be more content coming soon, stay tuned! 😊
Shaving cream very expensive but contact lens very cheap in Philippines...
Hi @vwandtiny3769 Ah, another fellow expat sharing their experiences! Shaving cream can be pricey here, that's for sure. But hey, at least the contact lens prescriptions are affordable! 😅 Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
Lots of important information here. Thanks Paul.
Hi @buddylewis2743 Thanks for watching! 😊
Paul, Medicare is acceptable on Guam...Its about 3 hours from Manila...
Yup Thanks
No never Tri care yes if you have one but you need to go to ER if you retired that’s from military. It does help and treat me nice .
older guys with much younger chicks .... hmmm... sounds like a good country !
you can get that anywhere, but you might not like what you get. Gold digging whores are universal.
I have a new laptop and an older crappy one, a new phone and an older one I only use for Kindle but can be used.
I like cotton the philippines myself
This is good stuff, Paul. Thank you for sharing the info. Hadn't seriously considered becoming an ex-pat until watching you. Lots to think about.
Thanks Paul, very good info.
On IRS form instructions it states if you make more than X amount then you must file. Many do not make that much annually!
Did you consider other expat communities in different cities? How do they compare to where you are now?
Hi @pauloinpattaya4677 Thanks for the advice! Yeah, I'm already set up with a VPN and it works great. No need to do it in the US now. 😊
Good advice ,thanks.
You're welcome!
Excellent advice, thanks.
Hi @Michaelw777.52 Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! It's great to hear from someone who's considering moving to the Philippines and seeking advice from experienced expats like me. I hope my channel helps you prepare for your new life here. Good luck with your transition! 😊
Great information as always Paul. Kinda weird how your vlogged ended very abruptly while you were in the middle of a sentence
Hi @garyburgmylifeandtimes6354 Thanks for watching and commenting! I appreciate your feedback. Sorry about the abrupt ending, I'll make sure to wrap up my sentences more neatly in future videos 😊
I use Starling bank no atm fees no fees when purchasing best exchange rate I’m in UK not sure if it’s in USA
Grant Ewen I did the same thing. I had a taylor make my pants and polo shirts(which I prefer) so all my cloths fit perfectly. Good tip.
What a Great Info, Vid. Thanks.
can't you just order clothes..etc through amazon to ship to phillipines?
Shipping is deadly
Sounds like a Retirement plan for this 57 yr old.. Pinoi/East Texan...!!
Paul, What you think about having the ss deposited directly into a philippine bank? might that save some transfer fees? Thanks. -Rick
I would never do that, I keep my money in the States ,then move it here once a month
Metrobank is what I use as it allows me a Pensionsers Acct of which Social Security is wired directly to this Acct. I find it way cheaper and less headaches as have tried the other methods already! Again i have lived here 9 years so having my bank near me makes more sense!
Nice video paul thanks!!!!
Hi @josegarcia3316 Thank you so much! 😊
Old Dog, you are like Kieffer Sutherland in that show 24 hours, always pulling a new phone out of your pocket.
Hi @gregmartin2455 Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad to be a source of inspiration for your move to the Philippines. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need help along the way! 😊

Hey Paul, should the unlocked phone be GSM or CDMA? I assume GSM but want to be sure.

How is the ability to use Ebay in the Philippines?
Hi @10MinutestoRouletteFortune "Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Ebay access is good here in the Philippines, no issues."
Would you still choose Dumaguete?
Hi @dancronin6436 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Yeah, Dumaguete is a great choice for retirement, especially if you're looking for a slower pace of life and a more affordable cost of living. The community here is also very welcoming to expats. 😊
A few comments, what do you mean by VPN number and how do you get that? and the Mail box is that in usa or Philippines?
Hi @willieshoemaker8680 Thanks for watching! For the VPN number, I use a reputable VPN provider that offers multiple server locations worldwide. You can research and choose one that suits your needs. As for the mailbox, it's located here in the Philippines, as we wanted to be close to our home and community. Old Dog New Tricks April 20 2020.
Hey Paul ,,great info mate , when you send money from your bank in the USA via xoom and you pick it up at the Xoom office in the Philippines , do they give you USD or Paso when you collect it
Sir Dino ,
Since I know the answer more than happy to help you, Xoom is just an online service without any office in any country. You can send money from USA to Philippine to your bank account for example. If your bank account is USD, it becomes USD, if your bank account is Pesos, you get pesos. If you go to other money exchange stores, you get pesos. They will make money on fee for transferring money and exchange rate.
Hi @TheDino888 Thanks for sharing! Yes, when picking up cash from Xoom in the Philippines, they will give you PHP (Philippine Peso) not USD.
your observation about your viewing audience is spot on..lol
Hi @dondiboy6758 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 😊 It's great to hear that you find my observations relatable. #olddognewtricks #movingtophilippines #retireeinphilippines
What’s Zoom and how can I use it...I tried googling it and didn’t mention anything about money transfers..
I think he said Xoom and that is a PayPal service.
Hi @garyault8970 Thanks for watching! Zoom is a video conferencing platform that allows you to connect with people from all over the world. You can use it for free or purchase a subscription for additional features. To use it for money transfers, you can link your bank account and send/receive funds to/from other users. 😊
Where or how do you find a home house address with the forwarding service? I would love to find that here
Hi @johnsantorawluszki715 Thanks for watching! The forwarding service we use is called "MoveHub" and they provide us with a comprehensive list of available properties in Dumaguete, including addresses. It's been a lifesaver in our relocation process! 😊
