    I've had a Swiss Army knife in my pocket for about 60 years. Strangely, the tools I used most were the scissors, tweezers and awl. I occasionally used the saw, screwdrivers and blades.

      True, and the springs are only 10 cents here in Germany. The same goes for the toothpick and tweezers. Very useful tools and easy to replace.
      Plus the Victorinox scissors are the best pocket tool scissors I know of. They are precise up to the tip and even cut stuff like 550 paracord with no effort and a very clean cut.
      That's why I have a Victorinox Climber in all my first aid kits.

  • @runthomas

    i carry the climber with me 365 days a year....love that knife, especially for the scissors, shortblade and long blade i cut fruit all the time...in fact i love it all.
    have a spartan in my kitchen which i use as tin opener , bottle opener , wine ipener, and letter opener...oh and i use the tin opener to take the lid off ginseng vials, and the corkscrew to take the middle hole cap out of vinegar bottles, which i use for other things.
    wont carry anything larger than 3 layers anywhere..if i need bigger, im camping or doing something major, i take the tools.
    had a bit of regret when i first got my climber, as the super tinker is the same knife but with a phillips, but the screwdriver on top of the can opener serves as a perfect phillips anyway , so i got over it.
    now im considering an alox version, was going to get the farmer x, as it had both scissors and saw, but it is too large for me to carry 365 daily, so opted for the farmer.
    after some more thought, i realised i used scissors much more than i will ever need a saw, so opted for the pioneer x.
    pioneer x is most likely going to swap out for my trusted climber....we shall see.

    The thing I love about my Pioneer Alox EDC is the sturdiness of the scales. I had classic plastic scales and wood scales on different Victorinox knives and the thing I hated was that the scales come loose after some time. They don't fall off, but they start rattling etc. No problem with the alox though some they are bolted to the knife and not just clicked on.

  • @andrewjoseph8510
    @andrewjoseph8510 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The way the light reflects off of the celladore when the Spartan is siting on the table would make a sick scale pattern. Maybe in carved wood?

    There are 3 SAK’s that I rotate most days of the week: Cadet, Pioneer and Compact. (Sometimes the Executive or Alox Minichamp get pocket time, paired with a larger folder.)

    After 40 years of celador knives, I finally took the plunge and got a Pioneer X. While I really liked, and continue to like, the tool set, the Pioneer felt slippery in my hand. After a several months of use and pocket time, that problem has largely gone away. That said, I still prefer the Super Tinker over the Pioneer X. It has more tools and feels better in my hand. You can't go wrong with either of them.

    I can see that a cellidor handle Swiss Army knife would be referred to as a ‘kids knife’. We all started with a cellidor-handled Swiss Army knife. I mean, WHO hasn’t? Owning several SAKs in my youth, ALL were cellidors ( all were lost). Never heard of Alox as a kid. If you were given an Alox knife as a kid, that was something special, like being fast-tracked to pocketknife adulthood. Cool video, very informative, thank you!

    I use the selador/celador? models in spring, early summer where I am as a small first aid kit. The thorn covered bushes that died off over winter dry out and stick in you again, the thorns causing infection if not fully removed. The tweezers, awl, small pen blade and the additional pin usually work with antiseptic. So I prefer the Alox but use plastic every spring, early summer.

      Alex Paulk you can send in your Pioneer to Victorinox Service Center and they will recondition it for you.

  • @wis1024

    I wonder why they dont make a 91mm alox with the back tools. Like say an alox tinker or spartan. They don't have to do every model just the top sellers, i think people would eat that up. The alox adds a little class and value over the plastic and does make it feel a little more "adult". I honestly think just having the rivets exposed and visible adds an aesthetic appeal as well as inspires more confidence even if its not entirely warranted.

    I like both celidor and alox models, both have their advantages and disadvantages. However alox models are slimmer to the extent that you can squeeze in a saw and it's still more or less the same thickness as a celidor equivalent without saw, for example the Farmer (3 layer alox) is 14mm thick, whilst the Spartan is 13.8mm thick. 0.2mm as a fraction of an inch is 1/125th in so not noticeable.

  • @Hexsyn
    @Hexsyn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was watching a video from another channel (we all juggle knives, I think) where he mentioned that he felt his alox model had a stronger tool spring feeling than a similar celedor model. I dont have any alox models yet, so I can't verify, but i was wondering if you could weigh in on this issue.

    • @swissarmydan9354
      @swissarmydan9354  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 93 mm Springs are larger and therefore stronger than smaller knives. As far as I know they are exactly the same for alox 84 mm and cellidor 84 mm.

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also bear in mind that the alox models have a thicker and deeper blade, as well as it being a teensy bit longer. But the extra thickness and general robustness of the alox model was what convinced me to get a Farmer after already owning a Hiker. Of course I love them both.

    Despite my irrational hatred of the corkscrew, my Compact ends up in my pocket almost exclusively these days. My Tinker doesn’t have scissors, and my Super Tinker is 3 layers - I much prefer the 2 layers of the Compact.
    Psyching myself up for my first mod: swap the corkscrew for the reamer or phillips head screwdriver (can’t decide which), and replacing the cellidor scales with titanium from Swiss Bianco. Can’t find a source for 2mm brass pins though 🤦🏽‍♂️

      The stainless steel blades on the SAK are easy to dull and easy to sharpen, but will never hold sharpness like carbon steel.

      There is a Spartan Ultra which costs a bit more and has a pen as well as tweezers and toothpick. But if you already own a Spartan you can buy Plus scales in a variety of colours including different camo patterns, these come with new tweezers, toothpick and pen as well as a straight pin. A good option if you want to give your old Spartan a makeover and add utility to it.

    The whole point of a Swiss Army knife is tools. The more tools in the same package size (essentially), the better the SAK. More tools = more better. Celador. Period.

    • @knurled1
      @knurled1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wrong. The whole point of a SAK is to give you the tools that you actually need. The various models cater to the broad spectrum of people's requirements. By your logic everyone should carry at least a swisschamp! So no, more tools does not equal better.....unless you actually need them.

    • @simonh6371
