I love my Compact. I bought it at the New York Victorinox flagship store some three years ago. It's the perfect tool combination tool for city carry. I have another 25 Victorinox knives, which vary significantly in function. Some are better for the outdoors, others for indoors. I don't go anywhere without one in my pocket.
A tip the swiss use is to lift the package hook and slot the pen in the space left then close it again, this allows the body of the knife to be used to make the pen easier to use.
The parcel hook is actually a clever tool.Felix does a cool video on all the uses but just a few are removing hot pans and cups off the fire, you can pull your frayed shoe string that is a pain to get back in with the hook, and if you have a couple of stable branches to mount the knife on,the hook can be used as a hanging device.I can hang my kerosene or candle lantern from it.I heard somebody say they tie a rope around the hook and toss it over a branch for their bear bags, makes it easier to get rope over the branch.A lot of other cool ideas are out there and with SAK's the possibilities are endless.
The way the backsprings are configured on all of the swiss army knives means that the only tool that can be paired on the back of the scissors layer is the hook.
i used the hock a lot of times, when i jave to carry plastic bags... my fingers say thanks!, jaja, any way.... get the climber model is only 3 milimeters more... and yo have the complete package, and chanche the scales to have all the extra tools.
I just got the Compact after eyeing it for some time, and I love it! It is celebrated everywhere as the perfect EDC Victorinox and it absolutley is. I really appreciate the hook which has many more uses than ppl realize. Hooking a bicycle chain back on the casette, without getting your fingers dirty, turning a screw-in hook. Pulling on a wire, for exmpl. But I have never carried a parcel with it though:)
If you make a habit of using string instead of tape on packages the Compact is a lot more practical. Alas knot skills are in decline due to lower attention span levels.
@@ScorpionRegent I agree. I've always loved knots and would dare to say I know a good number of them. I carry 2 or 3 meters of paracord in my pocket and it comes in handy more often than one might think ( provided you know your knots). Yesterday carrying a parcel, funny enough!
The hook has a file on the back of the hook is the most useful file in my opinion, files cool grooves into a stick in a candy cane gripping pattern. . The hook has alot of uses if you look it up. is great for pulling out flat head nails twisting wire, pulling wire through holes. Installing small hooks. Love it for carrying pails and bucketsthat don't have plastic on the wire handle plus you can carry two sometimes with that hook. I put small hooks on the sides of my work benches and whenever I drop something behind like a scre or something. Out the hook comes where I can move the branch without dragging it across the floor. Also good for using as a slingshot with a rubber band with your kids.
The hook is shaped like that for two reasons. The big one is it has to be to work (and using twine, either for bundling, or a mesh shopping bag is still extremely common in most of Europe), but it is also a question mark. I use mine to adjust the lacing on my boots, and for pulling springs, wire, etc, anything that can cut the hand. It is also very handy when your boots or your pack have zippers that are full of ice. Its only useless if you still have velcro shoes.
I'm fairly new to collecting SAKs, but I now own 28 SAKs of various sizes and models. The Compact is the absolute best SAK ever made, IMO. Like the OP said, the SAK Scissors are amazing and you'll be surprised how often you'll use it if you don't already have a SAK with scissors. I use the Hook to create knots when I'm out fishing. I also use it for the nail file. The Combo tool has come handy on many occasions, as a screwdriver, cap lifter, & can opener. And the Main Blade for opening Amazon boxes, which seem to show up at my door daily. The Corkscrew is definitely handy for corked bottles when we go for a picnic, but it's more useful to loosen stubborn knots. Since there are so many functional tools, this is seriously the best SAK ever made. I highly recommend this to any SAK fan or collector. I gave my grandkids their first SAK and I chose the Compact model for all its features. It was the perfect stocking stuffer! Thank you for the wonderful review!
You forgot to mention the pin that is tucked away at the base of the corkscrew. Often use it to pop open SIM card trays or for pushing in holed reset buttons.
He did, briefly. I saved my original pin and replaced it with expendable shirt pins to use, abuse, and possibly lose. Lost the knife and its pouch, still have the pin.
The hook isn’t just for carrying parcels, think outside the box and you will discover all sorts of uses for it. Example you can tighten up your shoe lace with it. 👍
The hook is great in combination with the pen. Open the hook, put the pen in the now open space, close the hook. Way better than writing with that small pen.
Parcel hook can be used in many ways not just for carrying parcels ex pull awkard ring cans alot of uses imagination is the key. Very good minimalist swiss knife for edc
Those are among my favorite two. Money Clip has my favorite tools in the right size. I'd have bought it even without the clip. Bantam is a Cadet-lite. Ounce per ounce, I think they are the best of the 1-layer sized. My former carry were Climber Plus, reverse scale, the Compact (lost with pouch) and Manager, both Sapphire.
That's pretty cool, I have a Climber, but on other days when I want one-handed opening and quick deployment I carry my Spydie Urban, accompanied with the Moneyclip for exactly the same reasons, a secondary blade and a pair of scissors. I normally carry those with a Knipex Cobra XS, and a Geekey on my keychain which is a bottle opener and Philips driver.
Used to carry the Sapphire Compact in the smaller leather pouch until it was lost on the job. Since then, I've preferred the Money Clip and Manager. If they could do an Alox Rally with a full nail tool replacing the mini flat screwdriver, I'd grab that for the keyring.
That's what I did until I lost my Compact. Now, when someone doesn't return my pen, I open the multi-tool on the Manager and slide the pen. It's more effective, I think.
If they'd make the tool a bit thicker to accommodate making the combo tool more robust (for prying), I would have bought my Compact sooner. The only reason I carry the Compact now is because I can go to my EDC bag and pull out the Leatherman Surge. 😂
wish it had a Phillips head instead of the hook, a can opener filed into a package opener hook, and a small nail file/cleaner… and maybe a partially serrated, locked, one-hand open main knife blade… and then maybe one more slot in the scales for… something 🤷🏻♂️ and somehow had Alox scales, while still having the various tool slots. …then it’d be a perfect knife 👌
You call the Compact best tool set on SAK, the you say parcel hook is useless. Sorry but I don't get the point XD. Parcel hook has a lot of uses actually one of which is keep the pen in place (under the closed hook)
two layers with scissors, plus scales and a combo tool i understand -- but as for back tools, gimme the reamer and phillips any day of the week. although you could use the corkscrew or the hook for that matter to do my favorite utility for the awl -- getting a beat up shoelace back through the eyelet.
Unfortunately the hook is the only backspring tool that can be paired with the scissors layer. I find it quite useful though, and you can use it to slot in and hold the pen for easy writing.
The “parcel hook” is the silliest tool in the Victorinox lineup. Yes, yes, it can also help you untangle your shoe laces but how often do you need that. After carrying an SAK daily for 30 years, I’m still waiting for that moment to arrive.
I guess you have seen it but for anyone wondering why a very practical-oriented company chose to put a hook on the Compact (and many other extremely useful SAKs like the Huntsman, my personnal fav), you can check this video: th-cam.com/video/srbipWJYOGM/w-d-xo.html Some of those tricks show that in an outdoors scenario, the hook is indeed a most precious tool.
Iron man - A tool that does everything is often a tool that is too awkward to use, so I have Soldier to complement my Compact. It has a Phillips driver, an awl, a saw and a strong flat blade screwdriver/prybar. I have an ignition file for my nails. It may be a one trick pony, but it takes no space at all and will never wear out.
@@ScorpionRegent That's an interesting take, but I just carry a Climber instead of Compact, or a Farmer X if I want the stronger alox tool with added wood saw. Okay I guess you mean the current Soldier obviously, I have that too and take it camping but silly knife laws in the UK mean I can't EDC it. Beautiful knife! I just modified a Waiter by adding scissors so now I EDC a Mini Compact!
Nice!
Which scissors did you take for this? Waiter is 84mm and all the nkrmal scissors are from the 91mm tools...

Best use of the hook is to lift it, put then pen in the slot, then close the hook over it. You can now write using the whole knife body as your pen.
I find that the hook works good to untie laces if they are tied too tight. I have used it for that purpose sometimes.

The hook is good for untying knots and for grabbing hot handles on cooking pots etc.
The alox cadet for me and sd clasic on my keys . Perfect.
The parcel hook is great for removing drywall anchors from the wall. My bottle opener wouldn't pry it out but the hook got it right away.
Love my Compact!!!
You can also use the hook to hold the pen. Just open the hook, place the pan in the gap and close it again. So you have a better grip when writing.
Wish it had a reamer instead of the hook and a Philips head screwdriver instead of the corkscrew.
Great idea
This is what I call Victorinox Secret. I've been edcing this bad boy for 4y 3m and 6d now. 👊

But who s counting .
Hook is great for pulling stubborn tent pegs, and twisting wire
btw the corner of the flathead works as a Philips, too. And also there is a small file for the fingernails.
