There goes my tattoo idea of a tree, dropping carnations onto a yawing lion, surrounded by butterflies, in the reflection of the brass of a compass, in the hands of Poseidon, who is standing in a koi pond, with a rising Phoenix in the background, clutching a Pepsi can in its talons, with block letters “ReBirth” around it lol
@@JamesWithee Hahah glad you enjoyed it. I am going to get out your way first part of the year. Maybe I can finally get some ink while I am in town. Thanks for the content!
@@nickhendrikactor957 He made a video spanning 24 minutes 43 and seconds having the audacity to preemptively tell people to just flat out not ask for specific tattoos. All of these things have been done by artists. It's dumb. Not honest. The only honest thing he is doing is revealing what he doesn't like doing or struggles with. His vibe is pretentious and petty. It is what it is.
I thought the same thing initially, but when you have the right to refuse to serve someone and you are doing your passion its ultimately your choice. I also want to imagine this guy does his art work so frequently that he probably has done so much that he doesnt have to do the annoying tattoos anymore. I.e. one client in a year comes in and asks for a compass and a clock... he puts all of his efforts into the tattoo and makes something hes proud of, no biggie. Then a trend hits and several people are asking for clocks.. lets be honest... you are probably better off to be up front and say, nah im not spending my time making clock tattoos, i want to display my talents. I dont want several people going out showing my tattoos of clocks that i lost interest in on the third tattoo because my heart is not in it anymore and quickly deteriorates in quality because of the lack of interest. Deteriorating could be a lack of imagination about such a dull sounding tattoo. So you throw basic circles down and shade them and slap your client out the door with an average piece of dookie. Doesnt sound fun to me either
@@phillipfiorentino so would you prefer that he doesn't tell clients what he struggles or doesn't like doing? I would rather an artist tell me that information rather than start working on a tattoo he might struggle with lmfao.
I mean, get what you want and like. Who cares if it's trendy, if you like it go for it. I'm a big "never regret a tattoo, it honored a season in your life" person. And if my artist is sick of it, then he should say "you know what? I think John over there can probably do this better than me, I think you'll be happier with him." And the client WILL be happier with someone who wants to do what they want to get. After all, it's forever on their body.
I agree. But I like when a professional give me advices. Maybe the person even know that is trendy, and want something more personal. If the person don't care, I mean, that's it.
As a tattoo artist do not listen to this advice …. Just bcuz u don’t regret dumb decisions doesn’t mean people won’t … people grow up and realize getting that tattoo wasn’t even important… and be wanting it removed
@@Hauntzilla I mean, imagine working on your artistic skills for years, taking an apprenticeship, busting your ass day in and day out for almost a decade and building a reputable clientele and business all on your own. You've done dozens, hundreds, maybe thousands of the same tattoos over and over again whilst dealing with assholes getting said tattoos. I think you're entitled to make a fucking youtube video stating what you're really not interested in tattooing anymore albeit butterlflies, skulls, roses, or whatever. Everyone is going to be different. Personally a lot of artists I know hate doing infinity symbols, feathers, and other basic white girl tattoos because it's uninspiring and they've done it a million times. I don't blame them. The field is supposed to be creative and fresh, not churning out the same tat everyday.
I'm from Germany and here it is totally normal for a tattoo artist to tell a client when another artist would be a better fit for them. My usual tattoo artist didn't wanna do my next tattoos even though he ist perfectly capable of it because he knew that another artist would enjoy doing it more and referred me to her and it was great to work with her. I. Think its perfectly fine to not wanna do certain tattoos and just let those people get them somewhere else.
It’s normal here too.. all the ppl in the comments are just mad cuz they have never requested a tattoo from someone is at a point in their career when they can say “no.”
This is VERY normal when you're a regular tattoo collector. I regularly ask my artists who they recommend for work that isn't their usual style. Not every artist does every tattoo. It's completely normal to go to different artists for different reasons.
But this is not his case. There are lots of people who are uncertain about what tattoo they want, which is why 'Tattoo Flash' is a thing. And there will be people who want a tattoo which is difficult to make work where they asked for it. And there's people who want a particular style that an artist has no skill in doing. This guy is not talking about any of those cases. He's just saying "I'm sick of people asking me to tattoo fucking clocks on them" (and whatever else). Because it's not what they want that's important, just what he wants. Maybe he needs to swap people's skin for a sketch pad, and draw what he likes in his own time when nobody's paying his wages!
It's a bit of a struggle if you want to design tattoos for yourself (if you're not confident enough or the placement makes it impossible to do it on yourself) - But i really get it, every Artist i know has turned down comission work they knew would be unsatisfying, either because it will feel like it looks bad (even if the client loves it) or it's simply not worth the effort. @tsuchan - Dude, don't expect Artists to act like obedient wage slaves, especially skilled artists with a bit of fame - they either get more requests than they can work or are paid well enough to not need to do anything they don't want. In an Industry where everyone's high-skilled and self-employed, you won't find many replaceable workers to boss around.
@@Yagirlnyesha sure we all know by now tattoo artists can deny your request for whatever reason they want. Also If u really want some played out design, go somewhere else?
100%. I get not wanting to do certain tattoos as an artist but to talk about it the way he is, as if he’s looking down on others, makes him seem like such a douche. If I lived near this guy I would avoid him like the plague.
Just got done with my koi sleeve last week and I love that shit. I love the meaning behind it and the Japanese art style involved. Artists get a shit ton of email, to them or shop. Some of it are just feelers and dont go anywhere. It's hard to even answer everything, so can see them just ignoring what they don't like. Saying no might prompt further discussion, all for a tattoo they have no intention to do. It's a time waster. I sent emails out to probably 6 or 7 artists and only got response from 2 this past year. They might have disliked the idea, or it didn't feel right, or maybe they were just too busy. A response would have been nice but I ultimately do not own their time and not every question is owed a response by people who work for themselves.
@@anthonyfranklin7137 ok and no one freaking said that he had to respond. What they’re saying is that if you are ignoring customers because you don’t like a tattoo that someone wants for no good reason, then you shouldn’t be a tattoo artist anymore.

This reminds me of why as a nail technician my sister never got goood tips or people asking for her service. Customers would pick out the color they want their nails 💅 and she would say eww no I wont polish your nail that color let me pick another color for you and would constantly make people uncomfortable and leave the nail salon sad and disappointed but some ppl were too nice to even say anything, what I’m tryin to say is let people who pay for your service get what they want unless they ask what you suggest. Most people already knew what they wanted in the first place.
Idk my clients love me. They cook for me and bring spreads of food for everyone at the shop and we hang out outside of work, have drinks, they invite me to travel with them, they travel to come to me at my shop and conventions, etc. I literally have so many ppl trying to get tattooed by me that I had to close my books last year and stop taking new appointments. I don’t think ppl in the comments understand my point. I don’t tell ppl what to get. And they don’t tell me what to do. They tell me what they want and if it’s not one of these things, I knock it out of the park for them. Sure, I choose colors, but I give options. They sit with me during the entire design process. Doing nails isn’t the same as tattooing. Not saying it’s an easy job but it’s like comparing glitter and glue scrapbooking to professional oil painting. Both are art but there ain’t no scrap books in museums.
And before anyone gets on here talking about how tattoos aren’t in museums either, I’ve been on exhibit at the phx art museum twice. Once for paintings and once for tattoos. Just throwing that out there so I don’t have to come back to this thread.

Yeah I'm glad you did this. I know when I walk into a tattoo shop and drop hundreds of dollars of My hard earned money for something I'm gonna wear on My body for the rest of My life, the most important thing on my mind is how much the artist enjoys doing it.
The Meaning of a Koi Fish Tattoo. The most common meaning of koi fish tattoos is perseverance. They are often used to symbolize the struggles one has overcome or is overcoming in their own life
That’s everybody alive. If you’re living you’ve overcome something some more traumatic than others. That’s just like the Phoenix tattoo…live long enough you’re going to experience a rebirth of some sort. People need to find something original, fresh, and unique to them to represent overcoming and or rebirth.
@@KimmieJ1920_LNC bro if you’re looking at it through the perspective of originality nothing is original and has already been done before lol, the Phoenix sounds just as stereotypical as the koifish, i believe it’s mostly execution/style/ and added design elements that define it as unique, not exactly the subject itself
“So i’m not gonna give you this tattoo cause i’m tired of doing this design.” That’s when I would walk out the shop and take my money elsewhere, cause how are you gonna reject somebody’s idea of a tattoo, just because YOU think it’s played out or cliche? And that should be an advantage for you, because since you’ve done so many of those designs, that should let the client/customer feel like You really know what you’re doing, and make them feel comfortable that they’re gonna walk out the tattoo shop with something that makes them happy.
I didn't realize ppl were getting vilified for what they personally want on their bodies. I thought it was about what they wanted...although I understand the originality part. Im not letting a soul tell me what not to get bcuz of their artistic preference. Go to someone that'll take your money and give you a good piece regardless of the personal opinion.
Good point, however I think it's totally fair enough to refuse to do a piece if you don't want to, at the end of the day it is their work and if they don't feel confident that they will be happy that it shows their skills it's fair enough, however true don't let anyone tell you otherwise but he did say that it's okay to like them he's not bashing them he just doesn't want to tattoo these pieces anymore and mainly quite valid reasons
Yes and no, I feel like sometimes we maybe a bit impulsive and get something because it's in trend but someone that has your best interest in mind and has way more experience will kindly steer you away from making a mistake you can't reverse, the best thing to do I believe is to have a discussion and maybe come up with something that feels right for both. Someone that just takes your money clearly doesn't care about you, just the money.
@@jljonesar it’s about finding an artist that vibes with you. I would never get a tattoo from an artist that isn’t enthusiastic about the piece. It’s basic common sense really, but I also want what I want. So it’s about finding that artistic cohesiveness

Poseidon: Haven't done one. Lion: Only done a few. Pocket watch/compass: Im over them. Trees: Lol. Oh boy. Carnations: I hate those. Butterflies: So many butterflies. Especially the monarch. Koi fish: Not my main suit, but enjoy doing them. Phoenix: NOPE! Logos: Lol. I hope they're paying you for the free advertising. Lettering: *sigh.
I get you're tired of them, but it's my body. I actually raise monarchs for conservation, & nature has saved my life from depression. So yes, i have a monarch but it's in between a bunch of poppies in a sleeve, bcuz i'm a landscaper. Mine is realistic. It has nothing to do with popularity; it's what i love. Roses, i don't like, but that's just me. If others like them, cool.
What I love about Poseidon tattoos being trendy is that it's so much more common to see tattoos of women (on people of all genders), it's a good counterweight to have a tattoo of a man being popular :)
"People are getting Poseidon tattoos like up the ass all the time" 1) that sounds super painful 2) I'm sorry for all the tattooists doing Poseidon ass tattoos
@@nobodyimportant9642 right? it’s usually the medusa tattoos that artists complain about rather than the poseidon ones even though she was literally punished for being raped by poseidon. Butterflies are on so many ppl because the meaning is transformation. If ppl have gone through something hard then they want that. I've seen alot of them. Same exact thing with a Phoenix.
Tbf any flora or fauna has a cycle and a transformation. Why do tattoos have to mean something? Mine are very random peices but I remember exactly what was going on in my life at the time. And no one else has them. Also tattoos aren't to be understood or even explained to others. No offense just my two penny's worth
This guy strikes me a someone who thinks tattoos are just meant to be fashion statements and has no grasp of their meanings or the fact that they can mean something special or hold deeper meaning, definitely someone I would not recommend at all to anyone wanting to get a meaningful tattoo seeing as he'll probably take it and completely fuck it up by making it look "cool".
I’m so proud of this video. Like, a man not only talking shit about tattoos women get but mostly shitting on traditionally masculine tattoos. I’m so happy ;)
New Skool tattooers are the biggest offenders when doing koi tattoos that look like genitals. Guys good at traditional Japanese are much better at pulling it off. Other than that, there are dudes in my gym that have the "Bro-tastic starter kit" look going on. Lions, Watches, compasses, bearded dudes, and rib script.
8/10 people could have the tattoo but you could get it and it would still be unique because the meaning of tattoo has different significance to every other person. I wanted a rising phoenix tattooed on my ribs but the people kept calling it basic n mainstream. I have even watched tattoo artists calling it too overrated. The thing is I DONT CARE it is. I have fought with severe depression n anxiety for past few year and have almost ended it on multiple occasions but I survived. I dug my finger nails down, bit down, kept going day by day n survived. So I really wanted a rising phoenix as a reminder of that and my courage that kept me alive. It was like being born again from the ashes. To me it is very special. To go to an artist with such a tattoo and have them call it cliche is really not okay.
It is cliche because it's common and that's not a bad thing, you said it yourself it has a special meaning to you as it has to many people, he is saying that is a common tattoo that he wouldn't do it in a TH-cam video, if you contacted other tattoo artists or even him, he probably would just say that he doesn't personally do this types of designs and would recommend you another artist assuming they are not too busy, is common to not get an answer or to be in wait lines for certain artists.
Excellent points about carnations and some flowers being difficult for the end result. It's touchy but would be good to see artists educate a client that comes in wanting one. For those who are getting their feelings hurt by this video, you should question your motivations for getting something. If you liked your tattoo idea because you thought you were being super original / edgy / artsy and resent finding out your idea isn't, then it might hurt to find out it's not. But if you like it, then you like it. Even the most awesome tattoo might make no sense to others, don't let that stop you.
People are misunderstanding that these are tattoos that he personally is tired of doing. If you wanna get them or do them then go for it, it’s art and different people are interested in different things
I think that artists giving insight on tattoos they don’t enjoy doing is really valuable information because tattoo artists WANT to give you their best work and if they have to keep doing the same thing over and over and don’t like it you aren’t going to get their best work. Finding an artist isn’t a one and done thing, if you REALLY want a specific kind of tattoo it’s reasonable to expect that you might need to consult multiple artists to find the best person for the job. He’s just being honest
Tip of the day guys// get whatever the fuck you want tatted on you, don’t let anybody tell you wtf to get// ps: if you have a problem doing your job that’s your own problem lol, if someone wants a lion tatted on them then it’s their choice like wtf?🤦♀️🤦♀️
@@Kessekom it’s completely up to that person if they want it on their body but then again like bro said, if the artist decides not to do it then that’s that
I really hate tattoo artists like this. They prioritize what they like and what they feel is “fun” to do rather than take any consideration what the customer wants or what it means to them. Completely invalidating what a tattoo might mean to someone because you don’t think it’s original is super smug. I really hope these type of artist go out of business so real artists can step up to the plate
@@Grimmlicious I think whatever I want on my body is my choice to make no matter how I present the idea. I shouldn’t have to explain to a stranger that a compass saved my grandfathers life when he was lost in the war, for them to deem it sentimental enough for MY body. If I want a compass I want a compass, that simple. Not to mention these new age ‘Pick & choose” artists are still charging top dollar for these tatts. Doesn’t make any sense
@@Grimmlicious He obviously can, and that’s why he made the video, saying that he can. You didn’t say anything that wasn’t said in the video, so idk if you just wanna go back n forth without adding anything to the conversation. I still feel that artist should be there to give people what they want indiscriminately, and people should choose Artist that match the style of art they want on their body permanently. That’s all
@@Grimmlicious What? This line of questioning is pretty backward and not making sense. The research you do on an artist is usually their style or tattooing, & I’d agree its dumb to see what style an artist does and request something opposite. Artists don’t have a list of things they “won’t do” that you see before hand. You usually ask for the piece and then they either accept or decline, in this guys case, he says he will just ignore the client and have them waiting for a response they’ll never get, which is also a dick move. So I’m really not sure where any manipulating can take place or what you mean by “Every minor little thing you need them to do”, we are just talking about getting a tattoo and getting accepted or denied based on what the artist feels like doing. The rest is just semantics that I don’t care to feed into
And again, I said no one should have to “over-share” and tell a stranger whether a tattoo is sentimental or just a cool idea, so I’m confused why you’re saying that. That was literally your first argument saying there’s a big difference between the two, yet now you’re saying that’s manipulating. I’m getting confused by the contradictions in what you’re trying to argue here. I honestly can’t tell if you’re arguing or agreeing with me at this point haha
My tattooist did what are probably the most commonly done tattoos in history. In fact, “overdone” and “done to death” are understatements. A huge Japanese style Phoenix covering one arm and chest. And a huge Japanese guardian lion covering the other arm and chest. He actually seemed keen to do them though! saying it was refreshing to do just one huge character on each arm. Because they’re big, he said he really enjoyed getting into the details of each character.
“After you do 7,8,9 10 of them”. This video made a lot of sense after that. If you’re not willing to do the practice on what you find difficult just say that. Don’t make a video jumping on others tattoo and tattoo ideas. Honestly just making yourself look back.
I agree with most of these - but butterflies are amazing and will never be played out for me. Butterflies and moths are some of my favorite animals - but I also don’t have to tattoo them on people over and over again 😂
Butterfly tattoos are also symbolic for surviving suicide attempts and overcoming depression. Which I feel like a tattoo artist should know, especially when they're the people that really push the whole "a tattoo should MEAN something to you" narrative. Medusa tattoos are a symbol of surviving sexual assault, if I had an artist complain about how many Medusa tattoos they put on women, I would never go to them again. It surprises me how ignorant a lot of artists are to the symbolism behind some of the most common tattoos
@@chubbybunny6975 you can interpret anything to mean what it seems to mean to you. And that’s valid for you, but if it doesn’t symbolize it objectively, to people everywhere, then you can’t expect everyone to know your special club’s decision as to what it means. Lions and butterflies objectively all over the world mean wild/fierce/strong etc and transformation/rebirth, respectively. The meanings your saying are very small subgroup interpretations. By definition if a person can’t figure out the meaning from the thjng itself without being told by your group, then you can’t expect other people to be from your culture and have your symbols.
As a random comparison, I absolutely love the song Canon in D. I'm a novice violinist. I started watching more violin content and found out that other classical artists HATE that song because of the number of times they have to play it, and because of how much it's requested for them to play. Apparently not ...
What about walking in a salon and asking for a hairstyle you like and the stylist is like "nah I don't like doing that. It's played out and we basically laugh at you when you leave". Still ok?
Get what you want and has meaning to you. If a tattoo artist really cares about their career and really love it they will do the tattoo. If they want to make fun of people and be rude and ignore you. Then they're not worth your time or money and they might want to rethink their career. Dont ever let an artist like this be horrible to you. They dont know all but they can give advice and be kind.
Art is subjective. As a small business owner I learned long ago to listen to a customer's needs and do my best to guide wisely. This works better than to talk down or critique them in a negative way.

Realism and fantasy is different dude. If they didn’t want to go for realism style, a proper artist could just freestyle it in their own style with(or without) a basic google reference. It’s cuz of that same shit that I talked about in my last video. Some clients think just cuz they have money they can force me to do whatever they want cuz the customer is always right. I became a tattooer so I wouldn’t have to live like that. This ain’t Starbucks lol
@@clvrswine why would you call someone a name on line you wouldn't in person that's some bitch shit damn there is a whole lot of keyboard killers out there
Man, I really can relate to your demeanor and disposition (at least in this video). It's a mixture of fatigue, irritation and cynicism. As an aspiring artist, who's been repeatedly recommended into doing tattoos, I already know, there's a lot too it, more than some may suspect/assume.
Lol sorry dude. If it makes u feel any better, I considered getting one at the beginning of my career, just cuz I thought they looked cool. But decided not to after they got more popular. No way u coulda known cuz ur not a tattooer and exposed to them all the time
The tattoos you have mentioned so far are all really popular tattoos. I can totally understand why you are sick of tattooing them. Aside from doing them too often, I like your reasoning for disliking each single piece. People tend to forget how much time and effort goes into a tattoo. So I am glad you’re also giving some technical critique on the pieces.😊
@THRIVE He isn't arrogant, you are the arrogant one thinking YOU were correct, when what's true is BOTH OF YOU were correct. YOUR PERSPECTIVE is blind to the idea that he is a tattoo ARTIST, emphasizing the word ARTIST, he isn't a PRINTER. But yes, if HE WANTS YOUR MONEY, HE CAN WORK FOR IT. Talk big for someone who understands SO LITTLE.
@THRIVE Just because it's your job doesn't mean he has to obligate to do everything a customer asks. If anything he loses the customer and the money but he is fine with that because he still does tattooing for other people and designs. People like you and the other unintelligent comments who complain about the same things are the real negative ones. He's expressing what he doesn't want people to ask "HIM" to do not what people should and shouldn't do
Dumb question unrelated to your video (sorry)... if I know the style I want but have no specific ideas, would it be OK to give complete artistic license to the artist within the desired style? Thanks for any input
It's not a dumb question. Yes, it's ok to do that. Peak an artist that is good in your favorite style and tell him/her that you are open to his/her ideas. They may already have original drawings they would like to tattoo on a client with an open mind. Watch the video "should tattoos have meaning". He adresses this subject.
Dude I'll never look at a Koi fish the same again 🤣. I don't have a koi tattoo I have an actual Koi in a small pond. I'm gonna call him Richard from now on.
the reactions to this video are hilarious to me. he's just giving his perspective from the point of view of the artist and he definitely knows more about tattooing and what makes a good tattoo than you do. its not his fault if your idea has been done 1000 times already and there are plenty of scratchers who will happily take your money and tattoo whatever you want but if you want a quality tattoo you should take your artists input into consideration.
A lot of these are the tribal tattoos of the 2010's/20's lol. I'm big on original tattoos, I just got the whole back of my forearm done with a super colorful neotraditional piece of a ufo abducting a cat.
As an artist myself, this is just poor taste. I see people defending this mindset with "oh this ain't retail he can choose his clients". Completely misses the point. Clients already are nervous about getting a tattoo especially if it's their first time. Probably tried to research first and find the right one they really wanted only to be shamed by this fool. Shame on you. You're not an artist. Anyone reading this, remember, stay away from these guys. You deserve to talk to someone who's actually willing to talk you through what you want and give recommendations if needed. THAT'S an artist. Not whatever this guy is.
Hi. I just stumbled across your channel and this is the first video I’ve seen so maybe you’ve addressed this. I have tattoos myself (none of these mentioned) but I have a genuine question. If the tattoo is personal to someone, as all of mine are, why would the tattoo artist care? I get that it’s your work, your style. Could you just say “are you open to suggestions?” And switch it up for them? Or just recommend another artist that does really good work in whatever they are looking for? My shop I go to has artists with different styles. If that artist can’t or won’t do it, they set you up with someone else that will. You do beautiful work. But I genuinely think the people who want these tattoos, want them for a reason. Does an artist really care about what someone wants to put on their body? If they pay for it and it means something to them, and they like your work enough to ask for it, why would you guys make fun of people for wanting those things?
I'm sure everyone getting these tattoos have significant meaning behind them. I assume it has to do more with the fact that they're too popular that they tattoo those subjects daily. Think of it like eating the same meal every day. You'll eventually get tired of eating it and want to try something else. Same thing with tattoos when you tattoo the same concept over and over again you eventually just want to turn down those tattoos and as a artist you want to work on more creative pieces.
(This is NOT at you) As a tattoo artist we have every right to say “no I don’t want to do that “doesn’t matter what tattoo it is that’s the first thing people need to realize. 2 there’s no originality people just go to a shop show us someone else’s tattoo and want the same thing people don’t do their research when it comes to choosing a tattoo artist either I’m a watercolor tattoo artist if someone ask be to do a portrait I’m going to tell them no but I always send them to another artist who does that style. Yes it’s your body but make your body unique don’t have the same tattoos like everyone else I can tell you personally that last year I had at least 15 people ask me for the same exact palm tree and they don’t want to change it. And even on top of that when a client shows us a picture of a tattoo design they don’t want to change it they want exactly that and to me that’s the most annoying thing when people take other peoples tattoos and goes to a different artist and basically ask me to steal that tattoo artist’s work. If you like a tattoo that was done go to that artist and they can draw you a 100% original design off of the tattoo you like. I’ve met many tattoo artist that hate doing the same design over and over again. We are artist we create not copy.
@@kyamabey7748 why do you care, though? it’s not your body. an hourglass to me, for example, could mean something else compared to thousands of other people. doesn’t make it generic or any less meaningful. my tattoos are very personal to me. so your opinion on what I should be doing with my body really doesn’t matter.
These guys think they're all artist on a higher plane of existence than the rest of mortal man. I'm seeing more and more of these videos where they get offended if you ask about price, or say you want an exact picture, or dont want them to do it thier way. Scr ew these guys. You do a job just like everyone else.
So this! I've been trying to find good reference material for 10+ years to get a Phoenix tattoo, and I just can't find anything that translates well to skin! Needed to hear this!
Coming from a person who has numerous tattoos from different artists, I have never met anyone with this guy's kind of a smug/negative vibe. You sir are the reason people are hesitant to initially get one.
It's interesting to hear tattoo artists from other parts of the US say which tattoos they're tired of seeing. Because a lot of these trends are non-existent where I live, just goes to show it's all relative. I've never seen a Poseidon tattoo, but I have seen enough rosary and skull tattoos to make me puke lol. Like another example, I told my bf from LA I wanted a fairy tattoo and he told me so many girls in LA have them. I've never seen a fairy tattoo in my life and none of the artists where I live have them on their portfolio. But apparently they're everywhere in SoCal.
This is an excellent point. Some of the designs he is talking about - I am aware of them, but have hardly ever seen. Trends are definitely region specific sometimes.
I like the idea of a forest scene (lot of pine trees, moon, birds, etc ,) but hope it doesn't become cliche. I used to want the whole tree of life thing / massive roots thing. But it would have to be more rectangular.
The forest scene thing is becoming popular but I don’t think it’ll ever be viewed as a dumb trend cuz ppl that get it are actually into nature and shit. Plus there are a million ways to execute it instead of it just being the same exact picture over and over. I live in Arizona where there are no beaches, so the Poseidon thing is like uhhhh why are u even getting this shit lol. So u are good as far as I’m concerned
Tattoo artists are the biggest babies I've learned...I just started with my tattoo journey and decided to research everything for over a year before I started and I realized so many artists are rly rude and pretentious ppl. My local high quality artist everyone goes thru was about to be my artist for my new tattoo. Then I saw him post such a d-baggy story about how "I'm so tired of doing small boring tattoos...from now on don't waste my time with it unless you're willing to pay $500 per minute." So a 40 min session is 20k? Lol...what a d-bag
What does the butterfly represent to you? Are you getting it to symbolize hope, a new beginning, or change in your life? This is the symbolism of a butterfly. Get it if you want to remember a change that you made or something you have hope for. If it's just something pretty to put on your back, there is a chance you'll regret it later. Make it mean something and you won't regret it.
@JD-bp7od actually my nickname is butterfly 🦋 and yeah I wanna start a new beginning, I hope to be successful , to be loved and to be in love. None till now have loved me neither I'm.
@rosegold1611 or you could do some kind of combination w stars and butterflies. Whatever you choose, make it mean something to you and you can't go wrong. Then when anyone talks about how a butterfly or a star is so cliche and overdone, you still know yours isn't.
I agree. Like I said in my comment from a bit ago I disagreed a bit;but still gave mad props. I love how James seems to be one of the few people on TH-cam who I can not only respectfully disagree with. But "props fully." Lolz
Thanks for the info, man. Hope you're feeling better after the COVID. Keep doing these blunt videos. As a tattoo collector who is not in the business, it's so helpful to know the line between trendy and overused. As always, I love your videos

You mean confidence and honesty? Fuck those vibes am I right?

Say you hate your job without saying you hate your job
I mean, get what you want and like. Who cares if it's trendy, if you like it go for it. I'm a big "never regret a tattoo, it honored a season in your life" person. And if my artist is sick of it, then he should say "you know what? I think John over there can probably do this better than me, I think you'll be happier with him." And the client WILL be happier with someone who wants to do what they want to get. After all, it's forever on their body.
Yes! Thank you!
It probably is what they’d actually tell you in person. Or just say it’s not their style.

I think you're entitled to make a fucking youtube video stating what you're really not interested in tattooing anymore albeit butterlflies, skulls, roses, or whatever. All 3 of you ain’t artists 4sure

To say you ignore clients because you don’t like their tattoo ideas is the green light for you to throw in the towel on being a tattoo artist.
Agreed
Artists get a shit ton of email, to them or shop. Some of it are just feelers and dont go anywhere. It's hard to even answer everything, so can see them just ignoring what they don't like. Saying no might prompt further discussion, all for a tattoo they have no intention to do. It's a time waster. I sent emails out to probably 6 or 7 artists and only got response from 2 this past year. They might have disliked the idea, or it didn't feel right, or maybe they were just too busy. A response would have been nice but I ultimately do not own their time and not every question is owed a response by people who work for themselves.

Most people already knew what they wanted in the first place.
Except nails come of in 1-4 weeks and a tattoo is forever on your body+ the pain you went through to get it in the first place…

@dopeflamingo88 well said sir 👏
I agree but at the same time I've been looking for tattoo ideas and He named everything popular on instagram rightnow basically and a by product of that is I wanted a poisodon but african version with a lion on top of his head now I'm thinking let me trying something a bit more original. I'm person who would hate to have the same thing as someone else

Right lol
@Kate Moore , not everything has to be original, ever heard of traditional, personal, or maybe even sentimental...
I enjoy your brutal honesty. Much respect.
Dude, saying “wack ass lookin’ fish” has me rolling 😂
LMFAO same
You should now do top 10 ideas you wish clients would only ask for. And I agree, koi fish look like D’s.
I was actually considering that for the next vid lol
Bruh I appreciate your honesty, I’ve been thinking the same exact thing….. when I look at artist instagrams I just see the same tattoos over and over 🤦🏽♂️
Poseidon: Haven't done one.
“You quit doing coke a few years ago so you wanna get the Pepsi logo” I laughed way too hard at that.
"People are getting Poseidon tattoos like up the ass all the time"
1) that sounds super painful
2) I'm sorry for all the tattooists doing Poseidon ass tattoos

Butterflies are on so many ppl because the meaning is transformation. If ppl have gone through something hard then they want that. I've seen alot of them. Same exact thing with a Phoenix.
Tbf any flora or fauna has a cycle and a transformation. Why do tattoos have to mean something? Mine are very random peices but I remember exactly what was going on in my life at the time. And no one else has them. Also tattoos aren't to be understood or even explained to others. No offense just my two penny's worth
Exactly
This guy strikes me a someone who thinks tattoos are just meant to be fashion statements and has no grasp of their meanings or the fact that they can mean something special or hold deeper meaning, definitely someone I would not recommend at all to anyone wanting to get a meaningful tattoo seeing as he'll probably take it and completely fuck it up by making it look "cool".

@@Nayper905 I’m thinking of getting a Baphomet tattoo on my back! :D
Wants people to get “original” pieces but loves tattooing roses.
This video seems like a presentation in school that he doesn’t wanna present
New Skool tattooers are the biggest offenders when doing koi tattoos that look like genitals. Guys good at traditional Japanese are much better at pulling it off. Other than that, there are dudes in my gym that have the "Bro-tastic starter kit" look going on. Lions, Watches, compasses, bearded dudes, and rib script.
True the neo ones are cooler than the new school ones. I’ve seen a few great koi tattoos but they are few and far between
8/10 people could have the tattoo but you could get it and it would still be unique because the meaning of tattoo has different significance to every other person.
I would hate to get tattooed by this guy. It was interesting to listen to his least faves - his attitude though, so holier than thou.
Tip of the day guys// get whatever the fuck you want tatted on you, don’t let anybody tell you wtf to get// ps: if you have a problem doing your job that’s your own problem lol, if someone wants a lion tatted on them then it’s their choice like wtf?🤦♀️🤦♀️
it is also the artist's choice whether to tattoo you or not :)
@@anhquan5097 your not wrong I guess
@@Kessekom it’s completely up to that person if they want it on their body but then again like bro said, if the artist decides not to do it then that’s that
Yo bro you think you think I can get a Poseidon tattoo?
Good thing they get to choose
My tattooist did what are probably the most commonly done tattoos in history. In fact, “overdone” and “done to death” are understatements. A huge Japanese style Phoenix covering one arm and chest. And a huge Japanese guardian lion covering the other arm and chest.
He actually seemed keen to do them though! saying it was refreshing to do just one huge character on each arm.
Because they’re big, he said he really enjoyed getting into the details of each character.
Thanks for showing us what kind of artists to avoid when walking into a tattoo shop 👍
I also love butterfly tattoos. I can't get tattoos yet, I'm 16. But in 2 years, I'm gonna get a butterfly tattoo to represent my niece.
XD Meanwhile I'm over here wanting to get to a skill level where I get to learn how to play it because if I ever get married, I wanted to play it at my own wedding lol

Let's all remember to show kindness to everyone, everywhere. It seems a lot of people took this video the wrong way. I've read through a bunch of mean comments and that's just so sad. Think before you speak. I personally just found this channel and I throughly enjoyed watching this video. I think everyone upset has these tattoos 👀👀 and it just upset not everyone is IN LOVE with them. Don't take someones opinions so seriously. Literally in this video he says a bunch of times "this is just my opinion" .
He's an artist and has a right to what type of work he wants to do and what not to do. Don't people get that?
This works better than to talk down or critique them in a negative way.
as a client seeing lions, pocket watches, and roses often in the same piece is just so generic, it's always the same lion too. also religious tattoos for me are getting old, like the cross or praying hands or something with clouds. idk just getting old. get something like biblically correct angle thatd be fuckin sick!

Just trying to lighten the mood with a different interpretation of your list.
Art is a hobby of mine. And I try to look at the world in wonder with it's shapes and colors that we walk past every day and don't really look at. Like the tips of the petals on a pink thistle are blue and purple not pink. I take a lot of close up photos to remember these things.
Anyway I made the list because I thought it would be funny to imagine interpreting what they asked for in a off the wall idea or the what if books influenced tattoo trends.
Realism and fantasy is different dude. If they didn’t want to go for realism style, a proper artist could just freestyle it in their own style with(or without) a basic google reference. Hell, they’re rare, but some artists can even freestyle in realism and not have it look awkward, basically like a photo.
Damn, my Dad... 😔

It's not a dumb question.
Yes, it's ok to do that. Peak an artist that is good in your favorite style and tell him/her that you are open to his/her ideas. They may already have original drawings they would like to tattoo on a client with an open mind.

the reactions to this video are hilarious to me. he's just giving his perspective from the point of view of the artist and he definitely knows more about tattooing and what makes a good tattoo than you do. its not his fault if your idea has been done 1000 times already and there are plenty of scratchers who will happily take your money and tattoo whatever you want but if you want a quality tattoo you should take your artists input into consideration.

Holy crap man. No Poseidon, no butterflies, what's next no owls? You realize these tattoos are 90% religiously backed, lol.

I’m on the north east coast I hate doing palm trees, lobsters, crabs, waves because during the summer I’m doing at least 3 of each a day.

@@JamesWithee I hope so. I might get the outline of a raven or something with a forest inside it. But like you said l love nature and forests. Thanks.
I have the best tattoos
Tattoo artists are the biggest babies I've learned...I just started with my tattoo journey and decided to research everything for over a year before I started and I realized so many artists are rly rude and pretentious ppl. My local high quality artist everyone goes thru was about to be my artist for my new tattoo. Then I saw him post such a d-baggy story about how "I'm so tired of doing small boring tattoos...from now on don't waste my time with it unless you're willing to pay $500 per minute." So a 40 min session is 20k? Lol...what a d-bag
Tbh I'm thinking about getting a 🦋 tatto and this is my 1st time. Now I'm not sure what to do.
@JD-bp7od now I'm thinking about a star tatto on my back of shoulder but I'm not sure
@rosegold1611 or you could do some kind of combination w stars and butterflies.
Whatever you choose, make it mean something to you and you can't go wrong. Then when anyone talks about how a butterfly or a star is so cliche and overdone, you still know yours isn't.
@JD-bp7od yes I'm thinking about that, thanks a lot for helping me ❤️
Hit with COVID. Still puts out 10/10 content. Fucken professional.
Dude. If you dont like doing the mentioned tattoos and turn down the work....
What... Do you do?? and how do you make ur money?
"if you got a sleeve with Poseidon, a lion, and a watch you shot yourself in the foot"
Love it dude! im dying! great videos as always
