As a medical student interested in psychiatry and neurology, listening to this chat about psychedelic therapeutics has me beyond excited. As mentioned, there is immense potential to change the landscape of how we treat and understand mental health disorders. We're talking about potentially shifting away from the traditional pill-for-an-ill approach to a more holistic and profound therapeutic experience. For those of us diving into the world of brain science, this is a thrilling time - as it is for so many patients being failed by current treatments. Gone are the days when these substances were purely associated with countercultural movements or recreational escapades!
Yes, and hopefully these psychedelics will be made legal for use by the general public sometime soon as well! Like shrooms. I don't mind if they are regulated and come with booklets on safe usage, but there are so many incredible benefits it is almost criminal to keep them illegal just because we have people in parliament or congress have an irrational fear of drugs (mostly conservatives)
I share your excitement. There is a lot of work to do to get to acceptability, however. I work as a social worker in the outpatient psychiatric clinic of a hospital. I was recently discussing the potential of these drugs with a few collegues, especially with patients having difficulties identifying purpose in their lives. The suggestion that we should envision these treatments at our clinic was met with great opposition from more experienced team members. Their argument was that it makes no sense to suggest drugs to an addiction prone patient population... it will take time to deconstruct the recreative narrative around these compounds.
on one hand I am excited about the research on psychedelics. I just think the woman scientist in this podcast is just a little naive and I am concerned that big pharma and government want to control the mushrooms medicine too much for profit and that it won’t be available as a natural available resource for all.
@@xRedSmartiesxi disagree regarding the view and prejudice for recreational use. I was on Methadone for several years with the V.A. I finally managed to get off the medication after a 9-month weening period. I am currently involved in a Ketamine therapy protocol. While Ketamine is classed as a dissociative, it has recently been classed as a psychedelic in some circles. I fell into a deep depression after getting off Methadone. I Strongly recommend just sticking to shrooms if you want an hallucinogenic experience. I was given “DMT" one time by someone I trusted (at the time) and it turned out too intense that the trip lasted for 24 hours. Can't really be sure what you're getting aside from shrooms. When I was about 28 years old, I had a dream where I learned how to fly through the air. When I woke up, I felt this euphoric, spiritual calm that EVERYTHING was as it should be. The normal self talk was gone, and just an overwhelming feeling of peace, was inside me…all day long. The next morning, it was less pronounced, and then the next…until if faded away. The dream triggered something in my mind, I wish I could duplicate WITHOUT getting addicted to drugs. I feel so fortunate to have experienced it, in my lifetime. So…if people can at least feel this once in their life, it might be worth it.
I too had a similar experience in my early 20’s, the overwhelming peaceful, euphoric feeling is/was ineffable. I’ve never been able to explain it, but it was life changing
I got those quite often. You believe in the possibility of this whilst in the dream state. The people who witness seem to believe it too. I have always considered that you've tapped into some kind of extra or forgotten ability. I'm early 40s and they usually come around every 5 years or so. Dreams aren't something you can control but that dream is something else. I've reached a heightened level of control of it in the past and like you say the next day it can be pretty overwhelming.

If we stop mindlessly procreating there will be no need for any kinds of medicine in the future. With that being said, psychedelic medicine does sound pretty cool 💯🌞
why would you propose this as if it's a positive? not needing medicine because there are no more humans??
What does your fashionable anti-natalism have to do with the future of psychedelic medicine? 😕

Quran says: “Allah:there is not God except he”:The Neccessary life/consciousness,sustainer of life/consciousness.”
Wire like neuronal structures that conduct electricity via ions/neurotransmitters in the CNS/PNS possess no attribute of thinking/life and yet that has “randomly” led to life. Consciousness/thinking is an innate idea(“Fitra”)that is distinct from carbon skeleton and yet the materialist scientist believes that chemistry turned into biology via “god of randomness”/”Emergent property”/”law of nature”. Christopher Hitchens called this type of reasoning 'Jesus Smuggling'
@@Nobodyyoucarabout well, Christopher Hitchens said: “I don’t have a body I am a body”. Hitchens was not a very bright man.
@@bluesky45299 he was simply pointing out there is no difference between yourself and your body, you are all of it, and to even say there is a “you” is a can of worms
@@Nobodyyoucarabout Hitchens is attempting to reject the undeniable : no, Hitchens is attempting to call himself a robot. However, Hitchens is miserably failing because Rene Descartes already established for us “cogito ergo sum”. So, Hitchens nonsense is not going to convince anybody rational.
@@bluesky45299 The Latin gives it a fancy, authentic-looking touch, but Descartes was _French._ It's also worth noting that Descartes' argument attempts to appeal to the intuition, and thus it establishes nothing empirically; the claim just _seems_ axiomatic, but consciousness still might not _be_ what it _feels like._ Though the famous phrase attempts to be philosophy's First Principle, it has settled nothing-except perhaps that it's now clear a flag has been planted by Romanticism, which has "established for us" a formalized space for irrationality.
The old school of thought is called Dualism, and it's dated. At its best, the pile of rubble has been re-arranged into an intellectual spaghetti called Compatibilism, in order to try and to give the old mind/body separation a gleam of legitimacy; but when it comes down to the nuts & bolts of it, there is only observable reality and those who wish there were somehow more to it.
As if, as one looks up and out, it weren't already vast enough! From here, there can be seen both the infinite and the infinitesimal, and yet you'd still prefer it if there were an infusion of magic to add to the complexity. Maybe re-examine some of that intuition.
