The fullers in the blade and the ports in the back of the handle are to allow water to flow through the knife so that it will deploy underwater while between your teeth while swimming under a submarine.

Someone from microtech called me and said that I can kill an aircraft carrier with this knife, hah! So they're called "fullers", awesome. Thank you for the data. Sounds like something my big brother would tell me about. Bad ass all the way.

Those fuller grooves are also known in the industry and by Tony himself as "field tested blood grooves" to negate the suction factor from a torso stab.
FYI the Navy Seals carry sharkskin Troodons and I believe a variant of Scarabs as well. Dive-safe hardcore materials perfect Glock perfection level details... These blades aren't for opening your Amazon boxes, and gahleeeee do they slap

I own this knife. I'm an obsessed microtech collector but this one is more than that to me. I work in the vocational trucking industry and unfortunately have been involved in more than one rescue situation over the last 30yrs. I've had to Cut Seatbelts, clothing, work boots, seat padding, hair, etc. I've had to bust windows while upside down in the mud and water. A tough, quick one handed knife that works underwater, with grippyness and has a glass breaker? No Brainer. Just a suggestion, Make it with a blunt tip and a rescue hook (gut hook) on the back edge! I think collectors like me forget that they're actually tools sometimes. Sorry long winded.

I'm a collector and love Microtech as well! I currently own 3 Microtech knives. An Ultratech, a Combat Troodon Hellhound signature series (but that doesn't stop me from carrying and using it!) and i just received my Scarab a few days ago on 02/02/2024! I'm already carrying it!
I agree with you, that they should make a Scarab II with a blade specifically designed for fire & rescue workers! Even though it's only been a few days since I finally got it, I already know that it's going be spending a lot of time in my pocket and in my hand!!

Another great thing about the T8 torx heads on the Scarab II Gen.III is that they're much deeper than on virtually any other knife out there! By that I mean that the T8 bit goes deeper into the torx screw head and gets a far better mechanical "grip" and ensuring that the head doesn't strip out!!

Microtech ported it out on the butt end to be able to fire underwater. The fullers on blade are likely to help with that. I guess if you fly off the highway into a body of water in your vehicle you’re all prepared for that wild scenario. 😆
I heard that the scarab beetle represents strength and perseverance, but in nature it’s just a doo doo beetle. Microtech probably prefers the former.

Yes sir! Love the comment about OTF knife safety benefits, & how folks just do not understand. The fact is good OTF is super safe because your fingers are never in the blade path as part of normal function. That and simple one handed operation, make otf knives a safe practical carry. Then yes many states have arkaine outdated laws. You can carry a gun, but not an OTF. Any good flipper knife is faster to deploy than an otf. So why is one legal but a spring makes people upset I guess. The laws make no sense. Cheers!

  • @xmetal280
    @xmetal280 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

I’m pretty sure OTF is illegal in many places simply due to the unfounded “movie switchblade” image that really has nothing to do with real life. 0TF knives are incredibly useful when working or otherwise only have one hand free. Luckily I can carry one here in Florida with my license, but it’s a shame that there is a stigma on such a useful tool.

I always looked at OTF knives as being like Jedi light savers. I think it’s a look into the future even know they had these type of knives in history I think it’s a way to the future and you’re correct about it being safer. I can’t tell you how many times I have broken a knife lock system on a cheap knife and had a pinch my fingers. My first stitches were from a Barlow night A Barlow knife that didn’t have any kind of safety lock on it at all.

This has become my most carried knife. IMO this is a true workhorse otf. It’s so easy to operate with gloves on, and even though it’s a thicc boi, it still carries great in the pocket. I can wear this in track pants and still hardly feel it there.
Edit: The anodizing on this one seems to wear abnormally fast. Mine’s already rubbed off and scratched up on the front where the blade deploys after 2 weeks.

I have about 8 microtech otf's and my combat troodon's used to be my fave, until I got this bad boy. BUT today I was my first day carrying it and I had a failure to retract. When you turn yours upside down (blade facing down) does yours not retract as hard?? My combat troodon's, ultratechs and dirac delta still fires about the same upside down and retracts the same but this guy sounds like it's going to come off the spring or something...And this is a update A week later I've had 2 failure to fire and LOCK today?!? With that massive firing button, and thick blade, the Scarab II is a big, beefy, bulky knife that makes the Combat Troodon look positively gracile in comparison! Both are dwarfed by the Guardian Tactical Recon 040, which is without any doubt the better OTF thanks to the ball-bearing surface under the firing button that reduces firing resistance to less than half that of the MT line. But...all that is just icing on the cake for DA OTF knife enthusiasts who ultimately must own at least ONE OF EACH!

I've had an ELMAX two tone black/brushed tanto blade with the hunter green matte square body and I still EDC it. It's served me well, the serial says 2012.
Tony Marfione is the dude. He hooked me up with repairs and a free sharpening, and offers Zippo caliber warranty. They're arguably the best engineered and best material blades on Earth or WERE at the time of the Halo V and the square body 2 tone Tanto Ultratech.
The UT is the one I see getting cloned and sold at gun shows down south all the time.
*Edit* of course a Marfione custom would have those triangular screws, my UT got knocked off track once and I was so tempted to make the 3 hole conical tool to bust it down but be glad you didn't, there's tamper proof stickers internally thatl void that "if ya run er over with ya Abraham's, we gotcha on a new one" warranty attitude 🤣
Also DO NOT suggest non-enginnering minded folks should just send it out for the FREE REPAIR, they have parallel deployment and retraction springs on either side of the blade track, and any fussing with any of it will wonk the tension, maybe even dislodge the groove with a bent or broken component.
My UT is rare a shit, they only made 2 of my variant and after that year they stopped making the square body UTs. When mine got stolen for 6 years and I did as the thief asked and "came correct and found his new apartment" when he moved the day after saying good luck getting it back... Welllll I got it back and after explaining to Tony what was up, even tho the square bodies couldn't be replaced (he stripped the albeit stupidly engineered titanium skull crusher out of the threads and sheared them off of the billet aluminum body just by EDC carrying it and the pocket clip rocking back and forth. It eventually just fell into his pocket and he only lost the screw in skully and the pocket clip.
This being said, Tony wasn't obligated to honor a warranty, nor did they even have a green square body to swap my internals into, and initially were trying to charge me 200 to get the discontinued guts into a new UT body... My charisma and barter are maxed out and he ended up re-machining the original body, custom made a skully, and added a fresh new UT clip. Now I have a Frankenslash and it's AWESOME. MTech FTW

Despite the name the colossus is actually a good bit smaller than the scarab 2. The grip material is much different, it's like skateboard grip tape on the colossus, whereas the scarab 2 feels more like rubber. The switch on the colossus is much stiffer, the blades are different shapes, and different steels. The glass breaker on the scarab 2 is huge, the one on the colossus is tiny and removable. The clip on the colossus is deep carry... I think that's about it, lol.
