  • What was supposed to be a quick and easy day project turned into a nightmare that honestly I still haven’t completely finished. Let me know what you would like tested and I'll see what I can do!

Just inherited/got one from a family member who’s just passed. I have a MacBook bit thought it would be cool to update the iMac.
The one I’ve gained is running Mac OS 10.5.8 - so you’ve been helpful as to show me how to update the OS !
Would you recommend going to the latest Mac OS or an older one like El Capitan etc?

I have two partitions: One runs the latest Ventura, and the other runs Mavericks. Mavericks-El Capitan will run faster, but they’ll be less supported. Sierra and onward will receive more support, but will be slower due to the software hacks to make them run.

I have a couple of these I purchased not realizing how old they were. Where do I optain the software to upgrade them? I purchased a harddrive so I can download it if possible. I was able to get it restored back to factory settings. Everything is old though so there is no internet that works etc. I am purchasing an ssd and my husband have a macbook that I can partition on ( I will have to watch another video to figure that out if you have a video suggestion please link it.) I really want to get these working so my kiddos can use them for school. Thanks in advance for the help and advice.

So this is kind of a loaded question. If you're wanting the latest software, I would download OpenCore Legacy Patcher and follow the websites steps to creating an installer. Getting them back to "Factory Settings" means using OS X Leopard 10.5.3 which came out in 2008. It's unusable.
Above all, make sure that you have 4 gigs of Ram, and an SSD in the machine. Otherwise, it will take 10 minutes just to get online.

have mine running a patched High Sierra (needed that for my version of Avid Pro Tools to run), 6Gb ram, and have a 3.0 core 2 duo I need to put in. It works as well as my i5 late 2013 macbook Pro.

I have an iMac of the same vintage which I retired recently. It works but…. I’m thinking of installing Linux but have to find a distribution that works on the iMac I have. Was thinking Mint but have to find a download that works with 32 bit.

This Mac is 64. Boot loader and everything. I’d go with mint or lubuntu

I wouldn’t go with anything less than a 2012. It’ll handle more ram, and will let you use a core i5

Anything you think I should try?

      In Ventura specifically

@@IgnacioGonOroz Ventura works, but it's super slow. Even with an SSD, I think it is bottlenecked by the CPU and RAM. Personally, I've been using Mojave with this machine since it was the last to support 32 bit Apple apps and is the best of both worlds so to speak.

@@SparkedTech what about Catalina Patcher? Is the difference in support between mojave and catalina worth it? I currently have mac os catalina on my Imac 20'' 2008, 4gb ram, Hd 2600 pro and 2.66 Core 2 Duo

@@IgnacioGonOroz In my opinion, no. But, I only use mine to watch TH-cam and listen to music. You may use yours as a daily driver. If so, then updating to Ventura might be worth it for you
