    I am a CDL holder and I am enjoying operating the yard truck also I shuttle containers from one location the main yard with empties and bring back loaded containers. I enjoy playing around with outside carriers driver, when they can't get their trailer out of the parking spot, after I pulled it out for them I be asking them what's for lunch.

    What I would like too see is a Telescopic and Tilt steering. Also, I notice failure too show Hub Oil Checks. Just because you don't drive these units down a highway, there are shunts that run a pretty fair sized yards and with the levels below normal, they can heat up the spindle and break off, detaching the front wheel from the unit.
    Good video, could use a few more tips.

    If you get a job driving these, build good habits from day one, habits for safety , but also technique. never trust yourself, double check that you indeed did unhook the airlines, before dropping a trailer. I have been driving yard trucks for 12 years, and you will get distracted at times, by radio calls, truckers asking questions of you , etc. They always happen at the wrong time. Your busy, and they all (inside) need their trailers moved and then you are distracted and forget what you just did. It happens. So Learn to check yourself, it's free, and it only takes a second or two. I have borken airlines a few times or stretched them, gotten them covered in grease when they slid over the Fifth wheel, and that is a mess to clean up, because it will get all over you if you don't. Broken airlines can put you down, and then you're in a pickle trying to repair a hose or waiting on maintenance. I have trained several people on these over the years, and on day cabs with manual 10 speeds, with power lift Fifth wheels also. it's the little things, the little habits you form that help you be a good driver. Good luck, and enjoy.

      @@Knightfan11 there is usually not a signal or sign. It's done by feel unfortunately. But the driver should be able to see the hitch up to a certain point, then he/she is blind till they hit the knuckle. It would be great to have like a cam on the bottom though. Would make it easy easier

  • @paulne1514
    @paulne1514 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    WOT on mine was 26mph. Put a dummy glad hand on service line with a separate spring (all the others came with one spring for 2 lines). I put a cb in with magnetic antenna. After hooking up the airline, I’d release the brake, then rev it up to lift the fifth wheel. Was quicker to air up the trailer this way. The other jockeys (kids) would hook up and drag the trailer, wheels still locked up. They’d hit a trailer backing another one in and try to blame it on street drivers. Except the damage done by jockey trucks cannot be done by street drivers ( a jockey truck, backing a trailer in, will only hit the other trailer at the top. So if you are going to drive like them, make sure you kiss ass with management!

    • @GoatyHerps
      @GoatyHerps 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They have to lift it high enough for the landing gear to be off the ground. Depending on where you're from, there can be a height requirement between landing gear and road.

    • @GoatyHerps
      @GoatyHerps 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Hahodi d - On an OTR truck you do. This is a yard truck. Its sole purpose is to quickly and efficiently move trailers short distances. They can move up to triple digits of trailers a day, so it wouldn't make sense using all the energy and time to get out and crank it every single time.
