What I like the most about this is the fact that even though he can fully grasp it in theory, he is still able to embrace it emotionally. While there is no doubt about Christopher Larkin being a godlike composer musically, he also delivered one of the most heartfelt pieces of music ever with this soundtrack!
I know you’ve already heard city of tears, but you absolutely have to play the game and not just hear it but experience it. The way it all comes together as you explore and swells for the big reveal, it’s one of those moments that you’ll never forget. I hope you'll get to play the game, this whole section of the gameplay got me super duper shocked.

@@MusicTheoryforGamers that was a great video man love your reaction dude, your reactions at every piece are informative and insightful. Keep it up man
I'm sure you probably noticed, but like 99% of the instruments were VST's, which is really impressive because I never noticed until after I finished the game. However, in the upcoming sequel for Hollow Knight, Christopher will most likely use a lot more real instruments. I recommend listening to one of the demo tracks called "lace". It's a full on string quartet composition, and really bodes well for the sequel's soundtrack.
@@elaimaro122 If I remember correctly, it was the viola (for the main theme), piano (forget which track), and vocals (for the beginning of City of Tears).
This soundtrack is just a huge adverdisement for whatever VSTs Larkin used cause i didn't even consider them to be VSTs. The only thing that doesn't slightly sound organic is that how tight and on-beat everything is.
Something i find underrated about "The White Lady". While in larkins other tracks, he has a lot of background ambience, this one seems a lot more comforting and homely.
I'm very late to respond but soundtrack "White Lady" is uncomplete, there's a second, extended segment you can find separately on TH-cam or in the game itself.
Hearing Greenpath (at least for me) Gives such a big feeling of childlike wonder. Like walking through a shaded park, Or hanging out in the forest. Its truly a masterpiece of music along with a masterpiece of a game!
Additionally Deepnest brings a sense of Horror that nothing else has ever come close to. With either No music at all, Just the scuttling sounds of a thousand different legs or a constant stream of tremolos screeching into your ears.
I absolutely love the contrast between the melancholy hope and sorrow of Sealed Vessel only to be hit by a freight train as Radiance makes an entrance, absolutely phenomenal
Something I've not seen anyone else mention is how perfectly the Fungal Wastes score changes (around 31:00) from quirky and weird to kind of mystical and dignified without ever changing the melody, only the instruments--and it fits with the way the environment around you changes as well.
Hollow Knight is the closest thing to a perfect game that I've every play! The art is beautiful, the music is astounding and the gameplay is very fun especially if you're a huge Metroidvania fan also heard you put guilty gear strive on the list can't wait!
11:31 how fitting that the marimba pans from the right over to upper left. If you haven't played the game the entire area of Greenpath is a constant struggle to get up and left but you don't have the abilities to do so so you keep having to go down before you make your way back up. Music mirroring map design, exactly what I've come to expect from Team Cherry.
I don't know of this soundtrack is too long or not, but I'd say the Cuphead soundtrack would be worth a listen. It's very high-energy, and takes inspiration from swing music around the 1930s. It's easily one of my favorites!
Note: while most of the most of more intense versions of the area themes play during minor battle sequences, Soul Sanctum's is actually played for its boss, the Soul Master.
rip dlc nah but for an actual comment i love the use of leitmotifs in hollow knight too. The main menu theme can be heard in the "False knight"/watcher knights theme, the broken vessel theme, and "The Hollow Knight" theme, tying all the characters represented in with the same theme of something empty being controlled.
Music Sealed Vessel hit different when you actually fight with him (The Hollow Knight). I cried my eyes out. Also the Theme of the game have some variants (background that affect the music) Sorry if I writted something wrong, english is not my native language
Your English is actually pretty nice! I can tell what you're saying, But the Hollow Knight is considered to have no gender, therefore, they/them pronouns instead of the use of he/him and he/him is considered masculine. Also, the use of have should be replaced with has and writted should be wrote, I don't remember why have and has are like that in English but I do understand how long it takes to learn English along with how difficult it tends to be. Honestly, I don't tend to use all of the English rules due to me being raised with the language and don't feel I need to try to get my point across to other native English speakers. So far your English is actually really nice, hope you have a nice day dude!
Sealed Vessel hurts my heart everytime I hear it. It starts off as this amazing fight to the death and then it crushes your soul as you watch them fall further and further into nothingness and just...God it's so good.
@@InternalDialogNik Interestingly, in the game they use "it" pronouns for the Hollow Knight and other vessels ("In the Black Vault far above, through *ITS* sacrifice, Hallownest lies eternal"). They don't only lack gender, they are seen as devoid of personhood at all.
I think this is one of those OSTs that, while incredible when standing on its own, really gains SO much more from the context of the game, in terms of how it scores the setting and the mood of the game in the moments they play.
When reacting to the dlc music, consider tossing Lace in there as well. It's a sample of the soundtrack of the upcoming HK sequel Silksong. Witnessing someone reacting to these OSTs for the first time is a dream come true for me
the environmental/location themes are so underated. sure, greenpath ain't no bop like mantis lords, but it fits the area so dam well. looking at the gorgeous, hand drawn backgrounds and characters while listening to this ost is a damn experience listening to the playful little tune in greenpath as a little bush creature comes to life, listening to the general song are looking at the completly wild and untamed vegetation of greenpath, all the greenery and life all around you. and this is just one track, I could say the same about all the other location osts. it's just a fuckin *experience*, stopping to really take in the scenery and the music of each beautifully unique area. and the overall feel of the entire ost really reminds you of the kind of world your in, a melancholy shell of what used to be a beautiful kingdom, but you can still find life in every corner if you look hard enough, these small yet fierce creatures surviving in this post-apocalyptic world
I highly recommend checking out the Celeste soundtrack by Lena raine. She has worked on many Great games like minecraft and deltarune and is one of my favourite artists ever. Also Celeste is an outstanding game either one of my favourites or my favourite
Proposal: A Hat in Time. There are a lot of tracks (A-side with main game tracks, B-side with parts, remixes that didn't made in, cut tracks and finally DLC tracks). Proposal 2: Any Persona game.
I like that you noticed the polyrhythm taking place in Hornet. In game its a battle and also introduction to a major character, and the battle feels more akin to a dance as two different styles and blades clash. The knight with their raw determination, power and skill clashing with Hornet's sheer speed, precision, and delicate yet sharp dance to meet in a serene back and forth, call and response.
The Sealed vessel and the Radiance are one of my favorite battle themes on the game. In the Sealed vessel when the sad part comes, you can just feel the sorrow and despiration in it. Defenetly doesnt help, that in the game the boss starts stapping itself, and it becomes even more sadder when you learn the story. The Radiance song is the perfect Theme for the boss, the moment you hear it, you realise that youre fighting something much greater than a normal enemy, youre fighting the Radiance, the god of light! Who is the source of all the misery and madness in the game, all those hours of gameplay has come to this moment, and it is epic af.
Listening to you break down and point out things in soundtracks like this is quite relaxing while I'm at work. Thank you for what you do! As a side note, if you like this soundtrack, you'll love the Ori soundtracks
I’ve never thought of music as something having “texture” and yet I knew exactly what you were talking about. It was similar with Crystal Peak for me, especially at the beginning with the strings coming from seemingly all directions and the rhythm. Probably explains a lot of my music choices lol
There is so much storytelling in the music of hollow knight-storytelling moments that you wouldn’t have understood unless you listen to the use of themes in the the different soundtrack. The way the Pale King’s theme is woven throughout the whole game is a testament to his influence on the world of the game and how he brought intelligence and created Hollownest, everything can be linked and traced back to him.
Hearing Soul Sanctum's heightened section within the context in which it plays, increased that part of the game's enjoyment for me 100x. It was so oppressive, surprising and hype that it is my top three songs of the game.

"I love the feel of these boss fights, it's all laid back and not too fast." Lol. When you get around to playing this game, man. I would go as far as to say that this game requires nice laid back tracks because the fights themselves are... hard af.
The music in the game itself is a lot more interesting. Each level theme (Crossroads, Greenpath, City of Tears, etc.) are layered through the game (except White Palace, Kingdoms Edge, Resting Grounds, and Royal Waterways [which was not present]), divided into three. I call these, "ambient", "main", and "action". "Ambient" is the level theme, but simpler, quieter, and with less parts. It is present in parts that are quiet, uninteresting, or if the game wants you to take in a view. "Main" is most of what you heard. All parts are present, and plays when in more dangerous parts, or parts with more action. Parts are only another term for "room". "Action" is simply the track, but with added instruments to make it feel intense. This plays when you meet a tough enemy or if you are forced to fight waves of tough enemies. You missed the "Colosseum of Fools" soundtrack, but all it is is the same part, but it gets faster over time. It does fit with the colosseum, though. You didn't miss much with it. Yeah I'm a nerd. Yeah I love the music. Yeah I love the game. So what?

I have no idea who you are or why you were recommended to me, but I very much appreciate you listening to and talking about one of my favorite soundtracks of all time; you really gave me a lot to think about next time I go through the soundtrack!
I feel this soundtrack is a lot more impactful when you know what the songs are playing over. Small things like the way Nosk's music just sounds like being chased by a giant spider, but there are more artistic choices as well. For instance, the Hollow Knight motif can be heard faintly throughout the OST but is front and center in Broken Vessel, Sealed Vessel, and the main theme. Can anybody think of why these songs might have a similar sound? OR, The Mantis Lords. A fight against 3 enemies. 1 at first, then once it's defeated, the next two at once. Their theme is a fugue. A piece intended to have 3 distinct voices. One plays at first, then the other two join later (typical of a fugue). Larkin wrote a part where one of these voices calls out and then another answers with the exact same phrase. This happens a couple times and then both instruments play the same phrase in unison. This actually mimics the attacks during the second phase of the fight. One attacks and then the other right after and then they both attack at the same time. This guy REALLY crafted his songs to match the game.
This sound track is just phenomenal! I think the Sealed Vessel ost might be the most awe inspiring musical piece I have EVER heard in a video game! Hollow Knight truly is something special
This is the sort of video I've been looking for! Most people only react to Hornet or Mantis Lords. Don't get me wrong, those are both amazing tracks, but there's other amazing things to find in this OST. Your reactions to the guitars coming in for Crystal Peak's high energy mix, the bombastic majesty of Radiance, and the gentle beauty of White Palace, among all the others. I'm curious if you have some stand out favorites? Wonderful video! I'm off to watch your other OST reactions!

The Hollow Knight soundtrack is a masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. Greenpath, City of Tears, Hornet, Sealed Vessel, White Palace, and Mantis Lords are all highlights.
Playing Hollow Knight especially during those moments I got frustrated with a fight the music would keep me pushing forward would keep me going back over and over again. I have a lot of tracks that I love on this OST in the game itself one of my favorites was the Mantis Lords. The combat itself mixed with the music is a moment that is going to stick with me for a very long time.

I'm so glad you reacted to this soundtrack! Hollow Knight is my favourite game, and the soundtrack is one of the main reasons why. The leitmotifs are plentiful and each song tells the player something about the area/character - for example, Mantis Lords: The fight is fast-paced and somewhat chaotic, and the song mirrors that. Christopher Larkin really did perfectly on the soundtrack.
Another music producer Alex Moukala also did a reaction video on the mantis lords and hornet tracks. He goes much more in depth and its really interesting to watch

This game, and especially the music, sits very close to my heart. My favorite “song” is the main theme because it really conveys how truly tragic this game is.
One thing I noticed is that Sealed vessel is definitely designed with the fight in mind such that the start matches with the roar. So some of these songs are 'incomplete' in a way.

I'm very late to respond but soundtrack "White Lady" is uncomplete, there's a second, extended segment you can find separately on TH-cam or in the game itself.
It's certainly befitting of the character it accompanies in the game, in that way.
Sameee, it's so nice to listen to, it really fits the environment
I absolutely love the contrast between the melancholy hope and sorrow of Sealed Vessel only to be hit by a freight train as Radiance makes an entrance, absolutely phenomenal
Something I've not seen anyone else mention is how perfectly the Fungal Wastes score changes (around 31:00) from quirky and weird to kind of mystical and dignified without ever changing the melody, only the instruments--and it fits with the way the environment around you changes as well.
the disgust you express when it sounds amazing. that's passion.

Music mirroring map design, exactly what I've come to expect from Team Cherry.
I don't know of this soundtrack is too long or not,

Note: while most of the most of more intense versions of the area themes play during minor battle sequences, Soul Sanctum's is actually played for its boss, the Soul Master.

nah but for an actual comment i love the use of leitmotifs in hollow knight too.

Also the Theme of the game have some variants (background that affect the music)
Sorry if I writted something wrong, english is not my native language
@@InternalDialogNik i forgot, thanks
Sealed Vessel hurts my heart everytime I hear it. It starts off as this amazing fight to the death and then it crushes your soul as you watch them fall further and further into nothingness and just...God it's so good.
@@OnitaFreeze YES
Witnessing someone reacting to these OSTs for the first time is a dream come true for me

the environmental/location themes are so underated. sure, greenpath ain't no bop like mantis lords, but it fits the area so dam well. looking at the gorgeous, hand drawn backgrounds and characters while listening to this ost is a damn experience
listening to the playful little tune in greenpath as a little bush creature comes to life, listening to the general song are looking at the completly wild and untamed vegetation of greenpath, all the greenery and life all around you. and this is just one track, I could say the same about all the other location osts. it's just a fuckin *experience*, stopping to really take in the scenery and the music of each beautifully unique area. and the overall feel of the entire ost really reminds you of the kind of world your in, a melancholy shell of what used to be a beautiful kingdom, but you can still find life in every corner if you look hard enough, these small yet fierce creatures surviving in this post-apocalyptic world
I highly recommend checking out the Celeste soundtrack by Lena raine.

YEEEE , i love AHiT , favourite indie platformer
The Windmill Peak is automatically on the favorite's tier
A hat in time would be fun
I like that you noticed the polyrhythm taking place in Hornet. In game its a battle and also introduction to a major character, and the battle feels more akin to a dance as two different styles and blades clash. The knight with their raw determination, power and skill clashing with Hornet's sheer speed, precision, and delicate yet sharp dance to meet in a serene back and forth, call and response.
The sealed vessel theme gives me chills every time it’s just so insane
Every time I hear the second half of Sealed Vessel, I just picture the hollow knight desperately stabbing himself in my mind 😭
HALLOWnest*
Hearing Soul Sanctum's heightened section within the context in which it plays, increased that part of the game's enjoyment for me 100x. It was so oppressive, surprising and hype that it is my top three songs of the game.

"I love the feel of these boss fights, it's all laid back and not too fast." Lol. When you get around to playing this game, man. I would go as far as to say that this game requires nice laid back tracks because the fights themselves are... hard af.
Imagine watching this with no music, but you can hear him XD
So what?
Even more interesting is the musical story telling of the game. If you know the lore, you can literally hear the story unfold
@@SamVimes27 I know some lore, but can you maybe elaborate?

I have no idea who you are or why you were recommended to me, but I very much appreciate you listening to and talking about one of my favorite soundtracks of all time; you really gave me a lot to think about next time I go through the soundtrack!
When he said: "Is there an implied triplets thing in this?" It just made me think: "IT WAS IN THE FIRST THEME THIS WHOLE TIME!?"
This ost makes me proud to be a Viola player

All of them are highlights
Playing Hollow Knight especially during those moments I got frustrated with a fight the music would keep me pushing forward would keep me going back over and over again. I have a lot of tracks that I love on this OST in the game itself one of my favorites was the Mantis Lords. The combat itself mixed with the music is a moment that is going to stick with me for a very long time.

I’d love to see a playthrough of the game, because of the dynamic music, it’d be interesting if you could point out the changes in the music even within the same area, as you move around
Fighting the Hollow Knight when the slow strings kick in is such a seminal moment in video game history. "Should I be doing this?"
Okay, why does it look like he's organisming every thirty seconds.
Thank you so much for doing this!
