After hearing the OST I HAD to play the game! See my full playthrough with reactions of Undertale here: th-cam.com/play/PL_WaRjEejruEepKrsM_dYR_GDAmluMOuS.html
OST starts with "Once Upon a Time" and ends with "Good Night" which means undertale was just a bedtime story. And the first thing you do in Deltarune? You wake up.
Fun fact: the little weirdness in "Home" is a hint at how the "home" you're in is very much not your home. It's a nice place, and the person who wishes you'd stay there safely away from the perils ahead is such a kind and well-intentioned soul, but it just isn't where your heart is - you must move on.
Also, this game's soundtrack is subject to some songs not being played at true-speed in game. Just to give you an idea, I can think of three songs off the top of my head which the game plays back a little bit slower than 100%: "Death by Glamour", "Reunited", and "But the Earth Refused to Die". I feel like this may have been done as a quick-and-dirty way to change their keys at the last minute, but that's only a guess. On top of that, in certain cases, there are songs which get played back _wildly_ more slowly than in their usual contexts, providing a much moodier or eerier juxtaposition.
@@PhirePhlame I'm late but the ingame version of his theme is an octave slower than the OST version. Don't know how that got fucked up but search it up
@@PhirePhlame SAVE the world is a big example of the true game speed. The copyright version is more upbeat and fighting like, while the in-game version is more emotional and heartfelt like.
Toby Fox will make the most hype song you've ever heard for a 30-second interaction between you and a snail that combusts when you motivate it too much
Fun fact: There was originally a softer, more acoustic version of Spear of Justice, but it got replaced with the current version because Toby thought that it didn't, and I quote: "Sound enough like being heroically punched in the face." Second fun fact: The song "Long Elevator" is literally just a recoding of Toby Fox's washing machine. Edit: probably should've put this here sooner, but Long Elevator isn't actually a recording of Toby Fox's washing machine. I thought it was. Turns out, it's basically just 3 long sine waves, which are basically just notes that oscillate, or repeatedly bend in a pattern. Thanks, replies!
Things I learned when watching this: 1. There’s way more lemotifs in Undertale than than I thought 2. Toby Fox is a genius 3. Apparently everything in this soundtrack is callback to Big Shot
oh yeah there's a TON of leitmotifs lol. in fact, megalovania is the only song on the undertale soundtrack with no leitmotifs. (excluding tracks like long elevator of course.) if you want to see where all the motifs are, there's some great videos by JakobTheQuizGuy and MediaMotifs!

Knowing the title of the song "Battle Against a True Hero" is something I wish I knew when playing Undertale. It would have made the fight the song appears in that much more heartbreaking
Undertale may have been over-exposed and it may have been obsessed over a bit too much, but it was never overrated. It's such a perfect thing, and it deserves to be recognized as such.
Couldn't have agreed more. Never replayed it after the initial release (though I did play a couple of times after learning you get more endings), but man, that game is an experience!
The dude made the whole game didn't he? That's crazy. Very wide arrange of skills and interests to pull this off. And it's not like any area of the game suffered. He did it all WELL. It's a beautiful work of art. I love the story, characters everything
@@SantanaBanana47 Yeah, actually. in the credits of the game, specifically neutral. I think it shows all the people that helped. In the pacifist credits, it shows ALOT of names, which would make it hard to catch most of them. So i assume they also helped in some small way or donated to toby fox for the cause of undertale or something
@@jaywarudo Those giant wall of names are all the Kickstarter backers, as Undertale was a Kickstarter game. Undertale was developed by an extremely small team, mainly Toby and Temmie, but a few others like Magnolia Porter helped out with other character designs and such
I love how the music starts out mostly 8 bit and by the end of the soundtrack it's full on instrumentals. Such a powerful feeling that really adds to the "genre shift" that the game puts you through
I never noticed that, but yeah, and it would make sense as it slowly sinks in that all of the things that are usually just game mechanics are real in this world, and it somehow both slowly, but also suddenly changes mood. It slowly helps you realize the full life of this world.
It’s like it sinks in that this is almost… more than a game. In a way undertale is very unrealistic in terms of everything, but it feels real, the end of the game makes you feel real things, and it’s conveyed in the music, you start out thinking it’s just another game, but by the end, it makes you feel. The game always has had… clearer music in moments that feel real.

Asgore's theme is so beautifully complex. From using Toriel's motif and the death screen motif, to using the same backing instrument as the main battle theme, it establishes a sense of firm familiarity. It reminds you of everything that drove you leading up to the point of the fight. However, being in a minor key, it throws in a sense of the unknown to mask it. It's hopeful, but scary. Familiar, yet unknown. Still one of, if not my most favored song in the entire soundtrack.
Not to mention Bergentrückung, the song you hear right before battling asgore, gives a great buildup to the actual song. Those two combined probably make my favorite song in undertale
It's almost like a conversation between the character and Asgore as well as within themselves. A question and answer invoking "do I have to do this? Do we have to go this far?" And then being determined to see to through because it seems theres no other way. The calm interjected in the middle , to give breath. A pause to reflect. Along with the various themes interspersed to remind you of where youve come but also to represent Asriels loss and dilemma. The two character motives parallel and it's reflected beautifully in this song.
Ah yes. And all of that complexity doesn’t even touch on my favorite part of the song… the theme that is one of a King who does not want to do this, does not want to kill you, but WILL do his duty to his people - something that he feels a heavy burden to do.
I've gotta say mr coach man, watching your face light up every time a new motif appeared in the sound track (And again whenever one repeated) is delightful
The smile you have when hearing some of these songs is so damn genuine and delightful. Toby’s ability to convey emotion through the games music is amazing.
The track "UNDERTALE" can be appreciated even more when you know the context of the song and what the leitmotif's being brought into this song were associated with. Bringing the two main leitmotifs of the games into one awesome track that holds the name of the game itself as it's title. Toby Fox has said he likes to use melodies and motifs this way and looks at it as if the music undergoes it's own sort of "character development" and uses it to tell a story in the music itself.
Toby is such a genius... His music still slaps HARD after these 6 years my god. And those letimotif usages u mentioned tie the story perfectly, im still so amazed...
The fact that some of the instruments aren't digital in that one track in particular just makes it hit closer to home it brings such a nostalgic feeling, as if the instruments are crying out raw human emotion
I loved it as well! I love what these themes represent as well! They represent the ideas behind each scene they accompany. Asriel or floweys theme slowly foreshadows his reveal as being Asriel, not mention representing his existence and relation to the scene. The original theme surrounds the monster war and its repercussions. How it’s story has impacted these people, and despite the humans being completely ignorant of the monster existence, the monsters continue to have their small rebellion against the humans, despite it being such a long time ago.
During the time Toby was making Undertale, the neighbors called police and firefighters on him a lot of times, and I can't blame them... Imagine a neighbor just making fire all day long
I was reading through the song list in the description when I realized something: The soundtrack begins with "Once Upon A Time" and ends with "Goodnight" ... Undertale is a freaking bedtime story.
@@joshshrum2764 You never get to hear Goodnight in the genocide run to my knowledge, everything just erases and there's nobody there anymore, nobody to finish telling the story and nobody to listen, forever unfulfilled. And damn if that isn't a haunting thought.
@@joshshrum2764 Not sure how you figure Asriel is gay (I'm guessing that is who you are referring to since Asgore and Toriel were married). I guess the genocide route is the Brothers Grimm version?
'Bring It In, Guys!' is such a perfect credits song. It's essentially a medley of all the different leitmotifs in the game that basically takes you back through the entire journey you've been on one last time
This game and it’s soundtrack has brought me joy for several years now. Seeing someone experience it for the first time and enjoy it like I do makes me so happy! Thanks for bringing back some great memories.
It's very cool that you noticed since the beggining, that all songs are connected in a way, using leitmotifs or being just a straight continuation from previous themes.
Those instruments used predominantly in Big Shot (and in Death by Glamour) are called "orchestra hits." One of the best MIDI instruements ever created.
What still impresses me to this day is that Toby made THE ENTIRE GAME ON HIS OWN with a little help from Temmie Chang. And having a game this good be made by ONE SINGLE PERSON with some help still surprises me.
Its raining somewhere else is the most underrated song on this OST. Musically it’s just so mysterious and intriguing yet at the same time comforting and relaxing. It is wistful yet complacent and it perfectly represents the scene it plays in during the game. More importantly it also represents the character it represents in such an interesting way. Even the name brings up more questions than answers. It’s just great.
It took me way too long to identify the leitmotif from "sans" in that track. It's incredible how similar melodies can make for completely disparate pieces.
@@fishylove1821 thats awesome! smart race has officially become one of my top songs by toby fox in a short amount of time but nothing beats its raining somewhere else
It's my favorite piece along with Undertale from the game. Finale is just so perfect. Everything is messy and all over the place in Your Best Nightmare and then Finale comes on and it just starts with only simple piano giving a sense of calm before the storm as you see the souls unite and then you can feel the souls determination to end flowey as the music becomes kind of chaotic again but instead of being as "messy" and all over the place, it is more focused since now the souls are fighting for the same cause together. The church bells are the cherry ontop also since they really give the feeling like it's an important life or death scenario.
The Undertale OST is the closest thing to musical perfection in my opinion. There was not a single song that stood out of place, and not one can honestly be improved. They are perfect the way they are.
@@polen0_ imo its vice versa, even toby said he didnt think he could replicate the magic of undertale so he went with a different kind of story in deltarune :D
@@huntehrerrhr6581deltarune's story came BEFORE undertale. the only reason he didnt make deltarune first is because it was too big of a project. besides its unfair to judge deltarunes story when its not even completed yet - its only 28% done 💀. u cant compare a finished game that alot of people have nostalgia for and an unfinished game. deltarune already has some of that undertale magic tbh
Bergentrückung always makes my eyes tear up. When King Asgore knows what he did to the other small kids and resolves himself that he can't allow himself to be pushed into something like that again and that he doesn't deserve mercy and destroys your mercy button... it's fantastic.
Thinking it through you should prolly not put unprotected spoilers here when the uploader hasn't seen the game yet and has some interest... But I guess it isn't the biggest deal. Yet.
Had a blast relistening to the UT soundtrack in the stream with chat! One thing unique about this reaction is your ability to identify time signatures and other musical aspects of the songs on the spot (thanks to your music theory knowledge) which is different and refreshing from the others. Something that I don't think enough people talk about is the sheer *volume* of music Toby makes for each game. The ratio of soundtrack to game length is insane.

The bird theme its funny to me because it shows toby's humor, in the game a little bird like a chick picks you up and carries you through a "disproportionately small gap" and the thing about toby making a whole hype up theme about it, its things like that which made the game so enjoyable
It's clearly reminiscent of airship themes from Final Fantasy, but the fact that it's a tiny bird over a small gap and the song is only 30 seconds long is what makes it so funny.
@@CrookiNari Check out Tessie from Earthbound, it’s the exact same gag. Epic adventure music kicks in and you travel 10 feet on the back of the loch ness monster for like a full minute
even after all these years, the song "UNDERTALE" still gives me them goosebumps lol. i also love your reactions to these songs, you truly show how much you really enjoy them, and that makes my day. you also have an amazing smile and i can't help but smile myself.
I feel like having these little pauses makes the song unique each time and adds a little charm to it. Also the fact that all of these tunes can be infinite. When you repeat any song it just is flawlessly composed so that it seems like it was going anyway Another thing is, the music is so integral to Undertale that you are less scared of scary music and absolutely terrified of the absence of music
Toby is really good at using leimotif to not only connect songs used in similar situations together, but also create lore out of them. Like a particular leitmotif in THE WORLD REVOLVING and BIG SHOT connecting together the lore of the characters that they play for. Making lore with leitmotifs. There's a reason why Megalovania is the only song without any leitmotifs. There's a reason why a certain simple 4-note motif appears in almost every song...
@@WarioLand3 So what? The Leitmotif of Metal Crusher comes from a music he composed several years before Undertale. Fallen Down is taken directly from his album he made for Earthbound.
if by the last one you mean gaster's theme, then that isn't really true. people in this fandom are way too quick to find any ABCB pattern in toby's songs and go "GASTER?!?!!?!?" there's very few cases where gaster's theme actually seems intended, and all of those cases are in deltarune songs - Another Him, Darkness Falls, Killer Queen, The World Revolving, etc. (the only song in undertale that i think _might_ have gaster's theme is Core, because of the obvious correlation, but even here it's a bit unlikely.)
52:38 Someone pointed out in chat that the song 'Another Medium' actually started out as a remix of a song called 'Doctor' which was made by one George Buzinkai for one of the Homestuck OST album's (they sadly passed away a few years ago). Iirc, the remix was originally called 'Patient' to stick with the Doctor theme; the title 'Another Medium' could also be a reference to how it went from a remix of a song from a webcomic to an area theme in a video game. Another Medium, indeed
i forgot what the title of that song is and was wondering if it was meant to be a homestuck reference when i saw it, assumed it was cause hotland looks kind of like the land of heat and clockwork. forgot it was also a doctor remix!
now that im thinking about it...all the area's in undertale look kind of like the worlds in homestuck. dave's world is hotland, john's is waterfall, jade's is snowedin. the only one were missing is rose's world but i suppose you could say hers got mixed together with john's due to all the rain very fitting too if thats actually intentional since toby fox literally started making undertale in andrew hussie's basement
1:14:33 is even more amazing when you think about it at a gameplay level. It's such a pivotal moment in the game that goes into a lot of the backstory. In my opinion, it is probably the single most important moment in the game, and the music really brings that out. If I recall, Toby went through several iterations of the song before settling on this piece which leads me to believe that he wanted this moment to matter. By far my favorite track.
When I was assisting to guitar lessons, my teacher always offered me to help learn a song of my choice and when I picked Hopes and Dreams + Save The World it took us two weeks to let go of it because of how passionate we were to play them everytime the lesson started. I still have the tabs we made saved in an old notebook. This game means the world to me as a person who is in love with music and it’s so endearing to see you react to its OST.
I totally agree and yet I feel his strongest suit in this game is his story telling. He accomplished something I don't know if any one else has ever managed to match in the story of undertale, which is to use the medium of being a game as fundamental to the storytelling itself. Undertale requires being a game to be told and that is an amazing accomplishment of storytelling.
@@adrienneladd8375 That is kind of the genius of Toby Fox. He's a great musician, a great writer, and a great game developer. Mash it all together, you get Undertale
@@adrienneladd8375 And its great that the initial premise is so simple and approachable. Fall into a land of monsters and you gotta kill the big bad at the end "asgore" to go free. and then he just layers and layers emotional nuance on top of it, like what if they aren't all that evil and introducing the idea that saving is a canonical power that the player has and playing with that.
@@antwonsworld3435 not same experience for me it goes way back to when toby worked on homestuck and he had made a kickstart for undertale i put around 5 bucks into it and got access to a very early demo of it that as far as i know is lost media and one neat thing in it is it seems ghaster was a place holder sprite i think it was for a boss that never made it. i’m pretty sure i still have the demo on a old hardrive somewhere it’s not the same as the one on archive site but toby fox as a whole is nostalgia for me
Weird that you’re reacting to Toby’s music backwards haha. But seriously, your reactions are so fun to watch and fun to see how others think of your favorite music. You’re also able to just detect some music factors and talk about how good and unique it is! I always enjoy your reactions, as much as you do enjoy making them! Keep up the good work!
15:52 musical headcannon! by experience with music boxes, those little nubs that pluck the keys get worn and dulled over time. it makes me want to think that, as you said earlier, the mismatches and off-timings throughout the song could be a reference to the past children in Toriel's care that didn't survive the underground. i only say this because at the end of the song, when you think it's over, the last piece comes in with pristine and matching timings, almost as if the music box never made to the end of the song before. a metaphor for Frisk being the only human to survive to hear that part.
My first tattoo was one of the Golden flowers from this game because it means so much to me. Delightful reaction vids! Undertale’s soundtrack was immediately a classic and still is. By the time one gets to Heartache, IMO, it’s impossible to stop playing
Honestly, the song "UNDERTALE" made me feel incredibly nostalgic, even when I heard it the first time. It just has this warm yet melancholic vibe to it, that I just tend to think of my childhood when I hear it. It pulls on my heartstrings, and almost makes me want to cry at times. That's an emotional boi right there.
UNDERTALE always gave me such a strong feeling of hope it’s actually insane, especially considering Frisk is walking to what is, in all likelihood, their death But it’s the culmination of the hope of the _monsters,_ and the fact that it makes you feel that hope with them despite the fact they’re essentially hoping that you die so they can be free is insane
this game has had such an impact on my life and i get so excited about the songs; watching you get excited about these songs as much as i do makes me so happy its like it scratched a part of my brain!!!
Toby Fox is something else. Not only insanely talented in music. He even managed to speak with one of his idols, ZUN, got to play Smash witht the creator and even got one of his characters into the game. His story is crazy! And there's more to come. I'm so jealous... I mean excited!
Fun fact: the song ‘Amalgam’ was actually made using samples of noises/songs from the game earthbound. The name is fitting not only because of the enemy you’re battling, but the origin on the song as well
Well actual. A majority of the pieces used samples from earthbound. If you were to take the sound font sad try it yourself you will find that the entire beginning was using the distorted guitar sample.
You should either play UT yourself or watch a full playthrough sometime. The game context will make some of the songs more meaningful. Especially "Your Best Nightmare," I think is almost total nonsense without seeing how it's used in the game.
It's crazy to think its been 7 years since this game came out! And yet it still is one of the best games to date. I hope that one day, I can tell my grandchildren the amazing music of this game. If the future is looking grim on the internet
I definitely recommend playing Undertale (either on a Stream or in your own time) as context does wonders for Tobys music. Some scenes that seem extremely serious are way more jokey in the actual game and the Leitmotifs carry better when each chat has its theme music played frequently. As that random chat member pointed out, Listening to spear of justice is way different When your not fighting undyne and her attacks are combining with the music! Also your reaction to “Your best nightmare” was amazing, you were taken so aback by the contrasting pitches in each section!
What’s insane is that there are only 3 actual live recordings in the entire game, during “Undertale,” “She’s Playing Piano,” and “Last Goodbye.” Everything else is a sample or synth.
@@commenteroftruth9790 It goes to show how good he is at making MIDI instruments sound authentic and real when he wants/needs to. It can confuse many people, even musicians. Plus, the authenticity of live recordings works well for more emotional pieces like Undertale and Last Goodbye. At least, that's how I take it.
mannn i really do love this whole playlist. i don't even need to play the game again if i have the urge to, i just listen to this whole thing and remember every single part of the game so vividly, that's how intricately woven the music is with the game itself
someone in chat around 25:00 called the music simple. You elaborated against this point, and definitely that's what this soundtrack does an amazing job with: creating catchy melodies with a lot of depth, but at the same time knowing how to pull back when it would better fit the story or environment
It's sometimes simple, but it's never "simplistic". It has a archetypal quality, but Toby really knows how to make it weird and complex when he wants to, ha ha.
I always thought that the short duration of “Finale” is something that adds weight to how heavy and significant it feels, I love to replay it endlessly but when hearing it for first time in the game, I experienced the craziest chills I’ve ever felt in my life.
One thing I love so much about the very short track "she's playing piano, is it's one character(undyne) playing a leitmotif that appears in another character's(Alphys) theme, but not just that, it's stripped bare of the timing nuance present in the original, and also the way that it's played purposefully has a lot of impact on the keys(I think it's called dynamics) because undyne is an impatient character with extreme passion in everything she does, that comes off as rough-edged and brute-forced
I honestly think the Undertale OST is good enough to be studied in school. Everything so clearly represents the game world, and there's the prominent use of leitmotifs, which is essentially the reason we study Danny Elfman in A-level music. Toby Fox is an incredible game creator, but I don't think it's too crazy to say his best talent is in composition. Best indie composer by far. Edit: you also get all the context of being a neo-retro video game and trying to emulate chiptune while actually being more modern, and occasionally using the newer synth tech to create different vibes. For what pieces you would study, I reckon the environment themes would be best. The boss themes are all crazy good but they're much more just enjoyable music than technically and musically complex.
2:11:08 now that I think about it Power of NEO IS the perfect theme for Mettaton NEO since just like the Mettaton NEO “fight” it’s a buildup to a payoff that never happens
very unpopular opinion, but “Here We Are” is one of my favorite songs in this track. it expresses the feeling of the specific part of the game completely perfect. suspenseful, unsettling and eerie. and the small bit of curiosity. absolute masterpiece
I love how you mentioned the static in “your best nightmare”. I remember you also mentioning them in the concert as “the most sandpaper I’ve ever heard in an orchestra” 😂
I love the entire Undertale soundtrack, but one of my favorite parts is in Finale, where there is some subtle foreshadowing of Flowey's true identity as His Theme plays in your left ear toward the end of the track.
1:25:55 A moment that blew my mind was when fighting ASGORE and this popped up, reminding me of Toriel and subsequently of everything I've been trough. As this moment I knew what to do.
So cool to see other people get so excited when listening and actually understanding the music. I'm not very educated in pretty much anything to do with music, but after taking some classes back in high school and making some stuff on my free time, I find myself enthralled with soundtracks in movies, games, and tv shows. Its awesome when a company really puts care into their soundtrack and its honestly overlooked half the time. Toby Fox and whoever else worked on the music for undertale did SUCH a good job putting together the perfect tracks at the perfect moments. Great video!!
I remember checking out "that game OST everyone keeps talking about" and as I listened myself I could immediately see why. I remember the day I was mind blown myself while listening to it as a musician (I'm still a student). I could not resist wanting to learn some of them myself on Piano (although violin is my main instrument) and of course I also couldn't resist buying the game itself which is amazing. First, I think I learnt Respite (which is one of my faves) and it took me quite a while to play it but ended up doing so. Then a few others (I've already lost count on how many of them I've screenshoted from Musescore and printed). I'm currently learning "An ending". Glad you liked it too, especially the fact that you did as a music teacher.
A couple fun facts about the soundtrack: - If you put together a map of which songs are remixes of each other, share leitmotifs, etc, there's only two or three that are completely disconnected from the others. - All the male characters with their own theme songs have them in 4/4 or 2/4, and all the female characters with their own theme songs have them in 3/4 or 6/8.
i do believe that there was only one real instrument used in this whole soundtrack, theres a google doc categorizing every vst/soundfont he used in the production of this
I realize undertale is so relatable because our journey as humans start by leaving the nest for the first time, moms sorta resisting each step you take towards adulthood, meeting friends and foes along the way and at the end, a father stands in the way, to test your survivability, fighting hard so you no longer need him, to be free to choose your path in life with the friends you hold dear to your heart and with determination to push forward and keep living life.
pleasantly surprised to see this recommended. as someone who knows almost nothing about music, what little i understood was very insightful - and it was a lovely time getting to relisten to the OST along with you and the chat. good stuff, man :)
Toby has such a way of interlacing motifs throughout the entire soundtrack! Even through Deltarune as well, as you saw yourself, connecting songs with BIG SHOT. In the case of BIG SHOT, POWER OF NEO, WORLD REVOLVING, and Dummy! Are all interconnected with the character’s theme (NOW’S YOUR CHANCE TO BE A) to create one interwoven piece of motifs that’s amazing to listen to.
After hearing the OST I HAD to play the game! See my full playthrough with reactions of Undertale here: th-cam.com/play/PL_WaRjEejruEepKrsM_dYR_GDAmluMOuS.html
OHHHHHH.....
Only 1 year later? Damn

you should watch "all undertale songs are connected (remastered)" it will blow your mind!
Pog :D
OST starts with "Once Upon a Time" and ends with "Good Night" which means undertale was just a bedtime story. And the first thing you do in Deltarune? You wake up.
0_o
Well… the first thing you do is create a character, but I get your point
huh
Never thought about how deltarune starts that way
@Jevil i have this theory that it's a bednight story deltarune gerson wrote
Though you can have Toriel, as your new mom in the end.

Fun fact: There was originally a softer, more acoustic version of Spear of Justice, but it got replaced with the current version because Toby thought that it didn't, and I quote: "Sound enough like being heroically punched in the face."
Second fun fact: The song "Long Elevator" is literally just a recoding of Toby Fox's washing machine.

Things I learned when watching this:
1. There’s way more lemotifs in Undertale than than I thought
2. Toby Fox is a genius
3. Apparently everything in this soundtrack is callback to Big Shot
haha!
Toby dreamed to be a big shot and become so big that he would see past the darkness, but he turned too big accidentally
they arent a callback to big shot since that was made after. Big Shot is just a combination of all previous
oh yeah there's a TON of leitmotifs lol. in fact, megalovania is the only song on the undertale soundtrack with no leitmotifs. (excluding tracks like long elevator of course.)

I love how the music starts out mostly 8 bit and by the end of the soundtrack it's full on instrumentals. Such a powerful feeling that really adds to the "genre shift" that the game puts you through
I didn't notice that
I never noticed that, but yeah, and it would make sense as it slowly sinks in that all of the things that are usually just game mechanics are real in this world, and it somehow both slowly, but also suddenly changes mood.

Toby Fox will really sit down and write one of the most bangin songs in the OST for the bit where you fight a spider that sells donuts
Can we talk about how it goes from Live Report to Death Report? Even Toby fox’s song names are genius
I was listening to them when I saw this coment
the most genius song name is “Song that might play when you fight sans”. It just hits different then the other names
@@risan7495 what about Ooo (best name)
@@risan7495 but what about "Bird that carries you over a disproportionately small gap"? That *really* hits different, at least for me
@@risan7495 To me its: Can you really call this a hotel, I didnt recieve a mint on my pillow
@@JaCaBrA144 I like asgore’s theme just because of Bergentrückung
Asgore being the voice you hear on death adds to the determination. So many secrets answered, a sense of betrayal for those hoping to talk to him.
I've gotta say mr coach man, watching your face light up every time a new motif appeared in the sound track (And again whenever one repeated) is delightful
double so when youve been waiting for a beat drop and it finally hits
And again through the whole of the song UNDERTALE
@@Dorsidwarf I actually cried a little during UNDERTALE it is such a beautiful song!
@@MusicTheoryforGamers It hits so much harder in context.
@@MusicTheoryforGamers yeah I cry every time I hear the whole thing….

toby fox is a musical genius

It scares me 😱
You know what I love about CORE? Is that the song continues even when you start a battle.
Yeah same I’m glad it doesn’t just use stronger monsters again, but it honestly works as a area, and battle theme.
When I first noticed that it gave me that "oh man we are really close to the end" feeling. Not sure why.
The same logic applies to Pandora's Palace from Deltarune" which is really good given the pace of the song.
Wait isn't the core theme called "another medium" or am I tripping
@@GabsyUnderscore nope. Core theme is called CORE.
Aww, I love that, as "character development", that's really inspiring, honestly! ;v;
The fact that some of the instruments aren't digital in that one track in particular just makes it hit closer to home
it brings such a nostalgic feeling, as if the instruments are crying out raw human emotion
How it’s story has impacted these people, and despite the humans being completely ignorant of the monster existence, the monsters continue to have their small rebellion against the humans, despite it being such a long time ago.
yo i am your 1k like !
During the time Toby was making Undertale, the neighbors called police and firefighters on him a lot of times, and I can't blame them... Imagine a neighbor just making fire all day long

Quite literally my favorite song on the entire ost. No doubt
It took me way too long to identify the leitmotif from "sans" in that track. It's incredible how similar melodies can make for completely disparate pieces.

What about the song Determination?
The song is good as hell I can actually agree
*The souls.......*
just having goosebumps listening to it again. i hope to one day write that sort of impactful melodies. Toby Fox is a legend.

That’s 100% got to be a reference to Big Nessie in EarthBound, right? I never even put the two together until now
It's clearly reminiscent of airship themes from Final Fantasy, but the fact that it's a tiny bird over a small gap and the song is only 30 seconds long is what makes it so funny.
@@CrookiNari Check out Tessie from Earthbound, it’s the exact same gag. Epic adventure music kicks in and you travel 10 feet on the back of the loch ness monster for like a full minute

The song Undertale is great
@@Galaxy-dw8lg facts
FInale gives me chills everytime i hear it, Toby is a MASTER at songs that make you feel emotions
Finale is my favorite song In the soundtrack besides battle against a true hero
finale goes so hard, i love how much it feels like its pushing you forward to finish this one final challenge
I love the way it’s gets more and more aggressively remixed till the end
Same, finale is like one of my favorite songs out of the soundtrack along with fallen down, his theme, and metal crusher
I already love what Toby Fox did with the Flowey leitmotif and then His Theme pops up in it and I can't help but get chills
I feel like having these little pauses makes the song unique each time and adds a little charm to it.
Also the fact that all of these tunes can be infinite. When you repeat any song it just is flawlessly composed so that it seems like it was going anyway
Another thing is, the music is so integral to Undertale that you are less scared of scary music and absolutely terrified of the absence of music
>And there's a reason why Megalovania is the only song without any leitmotifs
Yeah because it was composed like 10 years before all the others
Dr. W. D. Gaster
@@WarioLand3
So what? The Leitmotif of Metal Crusher comes from a music he composed several years before Undertale.
Fallen Down is taken directly from his album he made for Earthbound.
if by the last one you mean gaster's theme, then that isn't really true. people in this fandom are way too quick to find any ABCB pattern in toby's songs and go "GASTER?!?!!?!?"
there's very few cases where gaster's theme actually seems intended, and all of those cases are in deltarune songs - Another Him, Darkness Falls, Killer Queen, The World Revolving, etc. (the only song in undertale that i think _might_ have gaster's theme is Core, because of the obvious correlation, but even here it's a bit unlikely.)
But Megalovania has a little leitmotif of papyrus' theme
52:38 Someone pointed out in chat that the song 'Another Medium' actually started out as a remix of a song called 'Doctor' which was made by one George Buzinkai for one of the Homestuck OST album's (they sadly passed away a few years ago). Iirc, the remix was originally called 'Patient' to stick with the Doctor theme; the title 'Another Medium' could also be a reference to how it went from a remix of a song from a webcomic to an area theme in a video game. Another Medium, indeed
I never knew that man! But ill be sure to check out that song
What's more, the place where the game took place is called The Medium. So it might have been, in a sense, "another Medium"
i forgot what the title of that song is and was wondering if it was meant to be a homestuck reference when i saw it, assumed it was cause hotland looks kind of like the land of heat and clockwork. forgot it was also a doctor remix!
now that im thinking about it...all the area's in undertale look kind of like the worlds in homestuck. dave's world is hotland, john's is waterfall, jade's is snowedin. the only one were missing is rose's world but i suppose you could say hers got mixed together with john's due to all the rain
very fitting too if thats actually intentional since toby fox literally started making undertale in andrew hussie's basement
You didn’t say it’s name, but I knew which one you were talking about...

I still have the tabs we made saved in an old notebook.
This game means the world to me as a person who is in love with music and it’s so endearing to see you react to its OST.
i know its been said hundreds of times before but toby fox really is some kind of mad musical genius
Undertale and Deltarune are the culmination of remixing and creating songs for upwards of a decade... at minimum.
@@adrienneladd8375 That is kind of the genius of Toby Fox. He's a great musician, a great writer, and a great game developer. Mash it all together, you get Undertale

@@adrienneladd8375 And its great that the initial premise is so simple and approachable. 15:52 musical headcannon! by experience with music boxes, those little nubs that pluck the keys get worn and dulled over time. it makes me want to think that, as you said earlier, the mismatches and off-timings throughout the song could be a reference to the past children in Toriel's care that didn't survive the underground. i only say this because at the end of the song, when you think it's over, the last piece comes in with pristine and matching timings, almost as if the music box never made to the end of the song before. a metaphor for Frisk being the only human to survive to hear that part.
i love this
Toby Fox is such a genius omg
My first tattoo was one of the Golden flowers from this game because it means so much to me. Delightful reaction vids! Undertale’s soundtrack was immediately a classic and still is. By the time one gets to Heartache, IMO, it’s impossible to stop playing

Honestly, the song "UNDERTALE" made me feel incredibly nostalgic, even when I heard it the first time. It just has this warm yet melancholic vibe to it, that I just tend to think of my childhood when I hear it. It pulls on my heartstrings, and almost makes me want to cry at times. That's an emotional boi right there.

@@Tulip_bip Yep, it’s obviously meant for Asriel’s, tragic past or something tragic before you learn that.
UNDERTALE always gave me such a strong feeling of hope it’s actually insane, especially considering Frisk is walking to what is, in all likelihood, their death
But it’s the culmination of the hope of the _monsters,_ and the fact that it makes you feel that hope with them despite the fact they’re essentially hoping that you die so they can be free is insane

I definitely recommend playing Undertale (either on a Stream or in your own time) as context does wonders for Tobys music. Some scenes that seem extremely serious are way more jokey in the actual game and the Leitmotifs carry better when each chat has its theme music played frequently. someone in chat around 25:00 called the music simple.
It was a superchat saying that a video made on Tobys music design was basic, not that the actual music is basic.
8:57 The anticipation for the best to drop only for it to end is literally so perfect, I can’t believe I never noticed this
The track IS called “Anticipation” lol
As a undertale fan who is going to start playing the guitar because of guitarists that I love who inspired me this puts a smile on my face.
I always thought that the short duration of “Finale” is something that adds weight to how heavy and significant it feels, I love to replay it endlessly but when hearing it for first time in the game, I experienced the craziest chills I’ve ever felt in my life.
* you struggle
* but you can't move
just you and the god of hyperdeath in the abyssal darkness
The boss themes are all crazy good but they're much more just enjoyable music than technically and musically complex.
we should sign a petition for this
2:11:08 now that I think about it Power of NEO IS the perfect theme for Mettaton NEO since just like the Mettaton NEO “fight” it’s a buildup to a payoff that never happens

Toby Fox, the master of using the same song 10+ times and make them all BANGERS.
It's absolutely insane that one of my favorite OSTs ever is just a single song remixed about 50 times.

A moment that blew my mind was when fighting ASGORE and this popped up, reminding me of Toriel and subsequently of everything I've been trough.
Glad you liked it too, especially the fact that you did as a music teacher.

i was in fifth grade when Undertale released. i am now going into my senior year.
A couple fun facts about the soundtrack:
- If you put together a map of which songs are remixes of each other, share leitmotifs, etc, there's only two or three that are completely disconnected from the others.

Or you can just kill them all…
Oh wow that’s epic
It’s nice listening along after not hearing the soundtrack in so long, very nostalgic of nicer times and of course the music is phenomenal
