Everybody in other countries feel so high and mighty because they see bad news about Trump in their liberal news media sources every day. However, Australia has it's own problems including having one of the most corrupt governments in the free world. Trump is a reality TV show in other countries but here, he is not doing that bad of a job. People in America are still doing fine perhaps even better than before so there is no reason to lose your shit because Trump paid hush money to Stormy Daniels. I don't give a shit. @@colinbaker3916 Also if you're poor the chances of being railroaded on a meaningless charge are much higher, especially since prisons are now a profit industry. There are also conspiracy theories that minorities are specifically targeted to make them ineligible to vote, the truth is probably that it's just an incidental byproduct of institutional racism.
"The law applies equally to both rich men and poor men sleeping under a bridge."

Elections have consequences. NOT voting has consequences. NOT voting basically signals to politicians that they don't even have to take into consideration your concerns because there would not be any political price for acting in a way contrary to you want. Its one reason why republicans have been able to push an unpopular agenda for the last 20-30 years. So when only 30 percent vote in midterms and 55 percent vote in presidential elections, one should expect bad results.
Low voter turnout almost always favors republicans. For those who choose not to vote because no one satisfies your purity test, Donald Trump and the republican party thanks you for your support. As far as they are concerned, you can chase all them out of restaurants as long as you stay away from the polls. They won't mind too much.

I agree on the thought that voting should be more of a duty...maybe mandatory ?
But I have to disagree on the voter shaming. Hillary was a candidate that came with nice slogans and little policy ideas during a time that cried for change. She had a big name but was just not the right candidate to put up against a (fake) populist on the right. She came across as platitudes and milktoast ideas and didnt excite anyone to go vote. Sanders had the youth and all the momentum on his side, but he got badly mistreated by the DNC, a bunch of primary elections were rigged, Hillary got debate questions in advance AND went for friggin Tim Caine as VP instead of Sanders. She came across as if she wore a pin that said: "You have no alternative to vote for, so I can just do what I want"

You can vote by post if you can’t make it to the polling booth on election day - which is always on a Saturday in any case. They can’t force you to actually fill out a ballot. If you really can’t decide, or are extremely apathetic, all you have to do is attend and get your name crossed off the list. But 95% of voters actually do vote - it forces one to at least think about the issues and to be politically aware.

      @That1insaneguy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

There is a great speech by the late Justice Scalia where he talks about what makes America different from all the other democracies in the world, and why our rights are more protected. Its not the Bill of Rights that ensures our rights, its the system of checks and balances between both houses of the legislature, and between the other braches of the Federal Gov. that ensures those rights. Checks and balances between the House and Senate, and the Presidency ensure that no one party will be able to gain enough power to easily take away or infringe those rights.
People like Bill Maher would have us regress into mob rule, where the presidency, legislature, and courts were all controlled by the 51%. "History is on our side" they say, but if they knew anything about history they would know that what they are advocating for has already been tried, and the results were not pretty.

    • @CJ-442
      @CJ-442 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Max D - I think you mean we have population representation in the HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Congress refers to the entire Legislative Branch.
America has 2 different legislative bodies because the original 13 states couldn’t agree on how many diplomats each state should have. Smaller states like Rhode Island and Connecticut thought each state should have the same number of representatives, regardless of population size. And larger states like Virginia thought the number should be based on population size. (Also the issue of counting slaves as part of those populations was a whole other can of worms)
This was such a major issue that it threatened to tear apart the young Union before it started (remember, they were still WRITING the Constitution at this point, the closest thing to an actual government was the Colonial militia). So they decided to use both ideas for their fledgling government. This 2-part legislature has been a part of American politics since the very beginning, and will most likely always be there.

      >Divide population by amount of voters in state
      ---------------------
      Key:
      Representative (Rep)
      Senator (Sen)
      ~ Round
      Read:
      ~12345 Citizens: 1 Voter
Estimated 12345 citizens make up 1 voter.
      ----------------------
      States with small population:

      1 Rep 2 Sen = 3 Voters ~251798 Citizens:1 Voter
      *S Dakota: 869.666K Population* RED
      1 Rep 2 Sen = 3 Voter ~289889 Citizens:1 Voter
      *Wyoming 579.315K Population* RED
      1 Rep 2 Sen = 3 Voters ~193105 Citizens: 1 Voter
      >Small states average 200K per voter.
      States with large population:
      *Minnesota 5577K (5.5M) Population* BLUE
      8 Rep 2 Sen = 10 Voters ~557700 Citizens: 1 Voter
      *Maryland 6052K (6.052M) Population* BLUE
      8 Rep 2 Sen = 10 Voters ~605200 Citizens: 1 Voter
      *Ohio 11600K (11.6M) Poulation* RED
      16 Rep 2 Sen = 18 Voters ~644444 Citizens: 1 Voter
*New York: 8538K (8.5M) Population* BLUE
      27 Rep 2 Sen = 29 Voters ~294414 Citizens: 1 Voter
      *California: 39000 (39M) Population* BLUE
      53 Rep 2 Sen = 55 Voters ~709091 Citizens: 1 Voter
      *Texas: 28300K (23M) Population* RED
      36 Rep 2 Sen = 38 Voters ~744736 Citizens: 1 Voter
      >New York fits well to small state ratio.
      >While "Large" Red states are actually more underrepresented than "Large" Blue states, large states are more underrepresented than small states except New York.
So there are under representation on both sides.
And this is going toward left's favor since it may include illegals and unregistered in the population count...
Btw this disproves Maher's lackluster claim as number of representatives heavily rely on population count.

that question dates back over 200 years. Virginia and Georgia were the largest colonies and demanded a house of representatives based on population. Rhode Island and Delaware so hell no. If were going to be United then each colony must be equally represented. Let's do two senators each. After much arguing they said fuck it. Lets do both a house and senate. One on population and one on equality among colonies. As you can see it today, CA has 55 votes in the house and in presidential elections. WY has 1, so there's your population representation. But you can't have 1 state completed over running smaller states. Otherwise, those smaller states have no reason to want to be "United" with the larger.

Actually Bill forgot to fill you in on a few things. The perceived inequality of the Electoral college is quite intentional. The United States is NOT a Democracy. We are a Republic of States...United. One of the issues leading to our fight for independence from the Brits was about representation. We developed a system that bucks the trend of pretty much every other country. The electoral college decentralizes overrepresentation of highly populated areas and ensures all the states that make up our Republic have a proportional say (not equal, but proportional).

3spy1rex3 Go ahead, tell that person who assaulted a random guy on the street you want to give him the privilege of deciding who runs the country. Oh wait, you all advocate for that shit, nvm. I thought I was talking to the party of Kennedy, not fucking Joseph Stalin.

Traveller Leng Do some research before you write something even more idiotic here. Violent felons are NOT part of that 1.4 million people trying to get their votes back. Those guys lost their chance permanently, this is for the lesser ones, many who didn't even actually DO the crime they were convicted of.

^^^ SKY FALL ...Florida does restore voting rights to ex-Felons just not automatically once they have served their time & paid their debt. They have to wait 5 Years before they can apply to have their rights restored. Only 2 other states do this. These people need to have their right to vote back!
