      @Playfulpanthress Going with the popular vote alone is an awful idea, that's why the two party system exists in the first place. I'm a bit biased but I think that the Finnish system (and other ones similar to it) are great. To put it simply it works like this:
      On election day if anyone gets a majority of the vote (50% + 1 vote) they become president. Since there are lots of candidates it's quite frequent that that this doesn't happen. If no one gets a majority then there's a second round two weeks later where the top two candidates face each other, and hence, there will be a clear winner. This system gives at least one official round where people can consciously vote for the candidate that they want and if that candidate doesn't make it then you settle for someone else.

      Yes, well you were duped.
      Sanders never declared that he thought the Boston Bomber specifically should be allowed to vote. Instead, he was calling for the recognition of voting as an inalienable right for American citizens. He was then pressed with a limit case argument - would that even include the Boston Marathon Bomber and his answer was, "Yes," when it should have been, "That is a stupid question. What part of inalienable did you fail to understand?" The corporate owned media then seized on it and made headlines like the one that Maher exploits here.
      The implications of Sanders' position is that it would also allow the 931,000 people incarcerated for non-violent offenses in 2016 and the 470,000 Americans languishing in jails awaiting trial and not yet convicted (of anything) the right to vote.
      It would also allow those disenfranchised because of a felony who have already served their time and not re-offended the right to vote.
      However, instead of focusing on the issue, the media implied that Sanders wanted to single out terrorists for the right to vote. They did this because to dig deeper means to expose the majority of establishment politicians who have supported a deliberate effort to suppress the vote through mass incarceration.

      We have proportional representation so basically if a party gets 25% of the vote they get 25% of the seats in parliament. It means more minority parties get seats so more viewpoints are put forward. (This is a simplified explanation). It works better than first past the post that we had before. Parties have to co operate and negotiate. Not perfect but I like it.

      And, if a majority of this proportional representation gets conned by some person or group, things still get fucked up. My point was that, without an educated and vigilant electorate, no form of government is failsafe. With such a thing, any form of representative government can function. Some forms are better than others, but the first thing that needs to happen is to realize that without a trustworthy electorate, you won't have a trustworthy government. It's like trying to replace the steering wheel on your car because the brakes are bad.

    • @michaelramon2411
      @michaelramon2411 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But, at the end of the day, to get laws passed you need a coalition that will get you 50% of Parliament, which usually means that you have a right-wing block and a left-wing block and it all kind of works out like a two-party system anyways. (Except it is easier for the tiny minority party to hold the bigger coalition partners hostage, since they can not only block legislation like in a two-party system but can bring down the entire government.)

      CameTheRon Most people understand “fuck Bernie” on their own. The overwhelming majority of Bernie supporters have never made out a check to the US Treasury in their life and never will. He has virtually zero support from people who do.
      There’s a couple of really simple reasons why, and neither of them are because people are “selling out.”
      A. - The government is basically inept. They cannot even repair our roads proficiently and without bullshit bureaucracy and corruption. The House and Senate enjoy 15-20% approval ratings. Most people understand that turning our entire healthcare industry and economy over to these corrupt losers would be a bad move.
      B. - The average American isn’t going to support higher taxes. I’m a small business owner and do well but am not wealthy. I don’t care what you promise I’ll get in return, I’m not supporting a tax increase. Period. Almost all of the people who disagree don’t pay any taxes besides sales taxes and they’re just voting themselves “free” shit.
      People like their money more than they hate Trump, and that’s how this is perceived by independent voters. The nation is 30% varying degrees of liberal, 30% varying degrees of conservative and 40% independents/centrists. Whoever wins over the independent vote wins the election. The left is screeching autistically about trannies, open borders and socialism while also screaming “fuck white males” at the top of their lungs. Only problem is...”fucking white males” are the single largest voter demographic in America. None of that shit resonates with the average American voter. It DAMN sure doesn’t resonate in the Rust Belt that dems lost in ‘16. That matters a LOT. Spending the last 3 years #resisting may play well in NYC and LA, but that shit doesn’t do it for people in middle America.
      Watch. Unless the economy tanks, Trump wins again. The ensuing meltdown will be biblical.

Because neither of them can actually confront the actual power structures in the US and they feel impotent and lash out at people who question their credentials.
      His brand is being the guy who can "criticize both sides" and while Maher can safely challenge Republicans on their bullshit, he can't actually acknowledge the real bullshit in the Democratic party (money in politics). He can only step on easy targets on the left, "snowflakes", "whiny campus liberals" and the like. And now that there's a decent populist left that wants to return to a sensible amount of taxing on the wealthy, he finds himself to be a dinosaur struggling to keep up with the conversation. It's the same reason why he got along more with Cuomo than Moore recently.

The calculation of those who are "electable" is almost directly correlated with how much they are willing to follow elite policy, not necessarily how well there policies poll well with a majority of the population.

    • @claiminglight
      @claiminglight 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think we can make the case that the political polarization we're experiencing is the fault of the left. This has been brewing for decades. The first real big change was when Boehner was kicked out of the Speakership for failing to be far enough to the right. And before that, Gingrich showed Congress how debate was pretty much a waste of time-- you could do a lot better by gaming the system and manipulating the corporate media. Since those times, and especially since McConnell, the GOP has made it clear that they'd rather not waste any time compromising when they could easily maintain the status quo by obstructing. Debate and progress be damned, doing nothing was what they wanted, and gumming up the gears was the easiest way to do it. The resultant level of impotency and disillusionment among voters is what seemed to spark liberal political radicalism. And that, in turn, seemed to get the former tea party people excited.
      I have no love for the far-left madness. But even if the madness is evenly distributed, I don't think the fault is. I lay all of this at the feet of Gingrich, McConnell and the people who keep putting obstructionists and gerrymanders in power.

      @@rdalge A "steelman" is the opposite of a strawman. A strawman is an argument invented to give one a pretend thing to attack which, if it were true, would make my case stronger.
      In no way did I say anything pretend. Those are all things that happened. I'm afraid you're unintentionally talking nonsense.
      Further, I don't want anyone to think that my comment is suggesting that a handful of people singlehandedly toppled American discourse. In no way did I say that. Though I point out the specific actors, it should be obvious to anyone with an elementary education that politicians elected to public office are, in fact, elected to public office. To suggest that my comment says otherwise is, ironically, an _actual_ strawman.
      With regard to specific arguments about policy choices and government assistance vs overreach--- those are perfectly legitimate things to worry about. They're the sorts of conversations a healthy democracy should be having. And we're not having those-- because we're not a healthy democracy. To my mind, there's really nothing to discuss when it comes to policy nuance right now. We need to steer away from the iceberg before we start trying to re-chart a course to New York.

    • @claiminglight
      @claiminglight 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rdalge There are good and bad actors throughout all of history. But they all share a common trait: they think they're doing what's best. The saying "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" isn't an alien saying. It's a human one.
      Perhaps some few truly wicked people actually knew that they were doing wrong and did it anyway-- but not nearly most of them. So how then can we judge them? And how can we judge what were truly good or bad things for them to have done?
      Well, maybe we can avoid the question of their morality all together, at least for now. I've got both friends and family who've trusted the wrong people, or valued money over country, or were somehow tricked into thinking that we ought to protect the wealthy at the expense of the indigent. I don't think those people are bad. I think they're wrong. And I think their wrongness has led us down a bad, bad track as they were drawn in by folks who were willing to give them the things they wanted so long as their voters turned a blind eye to everything else. Enter here single issue voters and anti-government types who would later have to excuse tax breaks for modern robber barons, fraudsters, pussy grabbers and the like.
      But here's the real test of a man: when, in the face of being incorrect, you can recant and refocus your efforts toward making things right-- then you can prove you're actually a good person and never did anything bad-- you just behaved incorrectly. There's nothing evil in being tricked.
      But if, after learning you were wrong, you instead decided to double down to protect your pride and identity from the pain of accepting your failures, you do so at the cost of your country and the world. And then we can know you for what you've decided to become.
      A discussion over the nitty gritty of issues can wait. When it comes to things like abortion rights or access to education, I'm sure that we could have an interesting conversation-- and I doubt that I'd fit squarely into the box you'd have me in on every issue. Perhaps that's true in both directions. But really, what does it matter if we discuss particular issues right now? The walls may need painting, but the house is on fire.

    all churches that cross into politics should be taxed, per the constitution.

      The problem with churches is not their tax exempt status, but their growing political influence, election and appointments of persons who do not understand that separation of church & state is WHY this country was founded in the first place, but who now continue to foist THEIR religious views into the Government, where it has NO place.(Constitutionally, that is)

    • @nonyabizness.original

      @@XericSol churches are tax exempt using the 501(c)(3) charitable organization exemption. their exemption falls under the first amendment, and the supreme court ruled this to be the case to keep church and state separate. when a church participates in politics, it has violated the constitutional separation between church and state. several standing laws and irs rules ban churches from participating in politics and retaining tax exempt status.

      Nonya Bizness Bad example. Planned Parenthood, GreenPeace and many other 501c3 organizations regularly get involved in politics. Would you propose that they also lose their tax exempt status, or is your proposal only for organizations you don’t personally agree with?

    • @XericSol
      @XericSol 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nonyabizness.original This might be a bit of a shock to you, but it's clear you're premising this off of a letter written by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptist Association and not actually the Constitution. The letter was explaining to them that the Government of the United States will not be quashing their religious practices or those of any other religion because of the 1st Amendment that says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" and this was meant to affirm to the Danbury Baptist Association along with all other religions that the Government will not be thwarting religious practices or creating a government sanctioned religion of it's own. As shown by the writings of the vast majority of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and members of the first Congress under the Constitution, religion was always meant to be a part of the government, but the government was never to be part of the religion. Reading Jefferson's entire letter might be a worthwhile endeavor, because that exact letter with the phrasing to which you refer to when citing "separation of Church and State" was quoted in it's entirety in nearly every Supreme Court Ruling regarding the mixing of Religion and Politics and was used as a justification for keeping religion as a part of the political theater, such as allowing the state to pay for public transportation for students to and from Catholic schools as well as public schools until about the 1960s where the context of the letter was cut away to affirm the opposite of it's intent.
