Adam Savage Installs a Collet Locker on His Lathe!

  • Here's another instance where one build begets another build. While working on the rack gears for his miniature vault build, Adam found himself in need of a better system to hold those parts in his lathe using a standard 5C collet. So instead of using his tried and true chuck, he disassembles part of his lathe to install a collet locker and closer to get the repeatability he'll need for this project.

I watch it all- whether I have those tools or not because he articulates the process and the philosophy so well. I'm in the middle of a giant shop reorg and I'm building my own niche hardware store in my workshop and implementing first order of retrievability for tools.

    Dropping things on the floor is normal and should be expected. When you start to get old like me, it still happens (you never grow out of it) but when you go down there to pick it up, you have to consider what else you need to do while you are down there.

      There have been times when I let the thing just sit on the floor. My theory is why bend down because you are going to drop other things? So I make 1 trip instead of 5.

    Journeyman diemaker here. Started my journey in this trade as a machinist in the Marine Corps Reserves, but truly began my journey in this trade at a job shop running production parts on a CNC lathe. Always a pleasure to watch. Kroil will eventually release anything given time and tapping with a hammer to help it kreep. I agree with the cut and shut on replacing parts than going all in on a full new leadscrew or shaft as a first attempt at least. Didn't work this time but works well with leadscrews that arn't spinning. keep what fits, replace the worn part. I think that remaining vibration will drive you to distraction.I have no suggestions on how to fix it. You will work it out.

  • @timkohchi2048
    @timkohchi2048 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    it's a " Royal Products lever collet closer" and the thing you called a "bent shaft" is a "draw tube" ;) they are made to be used with a spindle taper adapter sleeve which allows the collet to be INSIDE the spindle nose, this reduces the stockout and minimizes the chance for runout from axial misalignment. using it with a scroll closer nose instead gives you the worst of both worlds, the poor alignment of a collet hanging way out there, with the setup time and complexity of a lever closer. the scroll closers were less used traditionally because of the high cost and (potentially) poor runout. the current availability of the cheap keyed closers combined with the easy setup makes them by far the most common choice for hobby machinists these days.

    Even though I know neither, I heartily agree with the final words.
    I knew nearly nothing about plastics and CNC intricacies when I built a 3D printer from parts/plans cirka 2011.
    Trimming it in was a long journey, the RepRap forums was pretty much it for finding stuff out back then.
    But it taught me many valuable lessons not only related to 3D printing.
    How plastics behave, how vibrations and even thermal expansion/contraction of the heat bed could affect part quality, etc etc.
    There's good reason no-one uses "bang bang" heat bed control anymore.
    Also learnt the hard way why extruder carriages should not be made out of PLA...
    Well, at least it lasted me long enough to print an ABS one.
    Details like that would be quite hard to learn/teach in other ways than simply doing it, and failing forward.

    Hey Adam, I first learned to machine manual and really enjoy the feel of the machine. There is something to be said for a tactile feeds and speeds. Before buying a CNC I tried out an XCarve because the software for CNC was really intimidating and was nothing like the simplicity of 3D printing and laser cutting. The easel software for the XCarve is as close to laser cutting as you can get and has a simple learning curve. Once you have done some projects with it you will get thirsty for more Y axis depth. CNC software really held me back and I needed to be successful with a few projects before taking on the intimidating Mach3, GCode, or some other more advanced software.

    Did you need to use the collet chuck with the closer? This is a bit unusual. These closers are normally used with a small Morse Taper to 5C taper adapter that you just push right into the spindle bore. The extra working room is probably not a big deal, but you do have fewer pieces potentially adding runout.

    Is a collett like what's in a dremel head?

    • @aritakalo8011
      @aritakalo8011 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Yes, in the nut and collet models. As in that separate nut and then the set of different size little inserts aka set of collets depending on the insert/tools shank diameter. Dremel uses push type collets. In this video being pull type collets. Difference being how the clamping force is applied. Push types, the collect head is pushed into the taper/holder. Typically done with a threaded nut going over the collet. In pull type the rear of the collect has the threads to be used to pull into the holder.
      However some dremels have drill type universal chuck as the tool head, meaning essentially a mini 3 jaw chuck. Advantage being it can accommodate various sizes.
      However collects advantage is more precise and consistent holding.

    Tube with a hole in it?
    So it's bit like a cylinder with walls around on it?

    Not a machinist, buth curious to know. (To scratch my logic itch.)
    Would it have been possible to machine an new '5C chuck' with the screw-interface 6 inches in? From my uneducated/looking outside in perspective there would be enough length to make the collet reach inwards.
    That way you can increase the length capacity. Also because you can machine closer to the driver side, there would be less runout?

    Mostly great video, but i feel like I'm missing the meat of the modification and install of the locker. Like it went from 2 pieces of pipe to installed in the lathe in 1 cut, and i want to see everything in between! Otherwise good stuff

    What is the name of the rust remover? I know it was mentioned a few times on other videos, but I can not currently recall which ones. I do remember it being 'reusable', but that's about it.

    You could have TIG welded that extension on easily. You could’ve had accuracy within one to two thou by using that take process. You would love the rabbit hole that tig welding is

    Adam mygd think simple, have you ever used a mill? They have a draw bar! And you can use air or hydraulics, if you have it, or the trusty nut and wrench.. all you need is a small receiver that the collet mounts in and a threaded hole at the other end. The Lock is on the other end. Fins😊😊😊 ~~ Cris h.

    Can the bouncing handle be rigged to be removable? Also, perhaps it is the bouncing of the handle which is flexing the pipe causing the variation in tolerance? Can you remove the handle and double check the tolerance again?

    What kind of wd40 can is that? It looks like an aerosol can with a pump sprayer on top? I've never seen one like that. Is that an adapter, or is it sold like that?

    Surprised to see rings on fingers while operating a lathe. A well known danger to lathe operators !
