And to think he got hurt on a small barrel. Wasn't even a big gnarly one like he caught earlier in the session. No matter the size it's always extremely dangerous surfing pipe or backdoor. These guys just make it look easy. Most of us normal surfers would get pounded and probably seriously injured trying to surf big pipe or for many even on a smaller day.....
Slamming his knee on the deck on a close out barrel can do just as much damage. I don’t think he hit reef. I think his knee got tweeked from rail grab. If face grabs your knee an pulls through your done.

Shoulder joint and cuff injuries are actually more difficult to recover from speaking from a rehabilitation perspective, but knees are no trip to the park.
