I'm not a surfer but a skier and seeing airbags being mainstream, would this be an option for surfers to keep them afloat and just spin instead of be slammed down rocks?
@@cedric2516 they already have them. some come built into the wetsuit and its just a co2 cartridge that when ripped inflates airbags on the suit and keeps you afloat. pretty similar to the avalanche bags skiers and snowboarders use.
I remember I went to Pipeline in the summer and the water was so calm it looked like a bay, You would never have guessed what epicness it was capable of in the season. Love Hawaii.
Been there on a smallish day, 4-5 feet. The power of the ocean on the north shore is insane. It's crazy to see it in person and how close to shore first reef breaks. I can't believe people charge it the way that they do every time it is hairy, especially with the crowd. It's hard to explain how gnarly surfing is at a spot like this given what lurks just beneath the surface.
There’s no swimming at that beach, you need a surf board to go in that water, super windy. The beach suddenly drops off, close to shore, so waves would hit clos, yeah.
I stayed on the North Shore to surf and the day I arrived at the hostel the owner was giving me a tour when someone ran up to him and informed him his friend had just broken his neck on Pipeline.
It is dangerous indeed. But the crowd plays a huge role in the statistics. And the amount of people that risk themselves in tricky close out waves down the reef breaking in dangerous spot that should be avoided at all costs, just to get a picture of a surfing pipe experience is pretty mad.
Absolute respect for these guys. I wear a helmet even on the small stuff, just to protect and for sun. Teaching my younger one to surf and i make sure she wears one too. You can see more people wearing them which is a good thing - no body cares or says anything.
I am looking forward to the biggest waves of the year to practice my drone flying skills. I get tired of chasing small waves and this place is my dream. My husband loves watching many famous surfers and he will be very interested. I like to watch drone surfing videos of famous photographers to see their techniques because I don't have experience chasing big waves. I am glad to see this clip. Thank you for sharing on TH-cam.
It’s an absolute nightmare to surf when it’s at the “professional” level unless you know half the guys in this video. Keep in mind, there are breaks at ehukai beach 100 yards away that are cool and good and nobody will hassle you. There are breaks all over the island that are accessible. THIS break is reserved for the best of the best. You step up, you better know what you are doing. And if you seriously want in, it’s like getting in at a cool bar; go everyday, on the off hours and in bad weather, so that the real ones know you. If you just show up on a 10/10 day I promise you will not have a good time.
Only because it’s so crowded. If Teahupoo had pipe crowds, it’d have pipe beat by a long shot. A big swell at chopes makes 6 foot pipe look like amateur hour. Pipe also can’t hold anywhere near the size chopes does. Not to mention the reef there is very much alive, nearly dry and razor sharp.
Well now we got that we just have to get koa Rothmann to wear a helmet too.😅🤙🏄 No but i agree, for its size, pipeline might be in the top rows of the most dangerous waves on the planet
@@leeboy7139 No I mean that just because so many people surf it is why the death count is so high. The crowd itself does make it dangerous but I mean that statistically speaking if you have a ton of people surf an already dangerous wave then it will of course have the most deaths just probabilistically.
shoulda had koa rothman on this, bro just took a gnarly hit at pipe and still hasn't fully recuperated, he's trying but its for sure going to be a battle where he's gotta lock the fuck in and stop partying to get back
That's how basically all surfs work. The sand banks/reefs displace the water as its pushes over them. The water is higher there because the sea bottom is higher. The height of the wave is usually where it's the most shallow.
I agree. Grew up down south there’s some stupidly heavy stuff down there. Then there’s the Bluff, Gnaraloo and Jakes to keep you on your toes up North.
I feel like Tahiti is a little more gnarly than pipe there just aren’t as many swells which makes pipe more dangerous because it’s surfed more and still super dangerous
Not really but the number of surfers, reef involved and time it's been ridden equals highest ratio of injuries and death. For Cali surfers I am sure it's the most dangerous wave in the world, it's the closest good reef break to the west coast of America.
I think it's just that there are so many variables at pipe that other spots don't have. The difference in conditions/swells, getting stuck in caves, crazy rips that won't let you in or out, and sheer mass of surfers jockeying and pushing each other into more and more dangerous positions. Not that Teahupoo or Shipsterns aren't terrifying but those are also spots with channels and rescue skis right there. Pipe is chaos on any decent swell.
I've raced motorcycles, raced downhill mountain bikes, and did extreme backcountry snowboarding... nothing came closer to killing me and heavy water surfing. The ocean is trying to kill you and is unrelenting. Those who know, know.
whocares if you got the whole US coastguard/military "watching," they are not preventing any of the falls you take before you hit the reef within the 3 second span you screw up, they only come to save you from drowning or retrieve your body if u really fck up. theres like 3-4 ft of water depth in some spots with sometimes 10, 12 ft waves, thats hella dangerous.
Plenty, but some other spots are more sketchy and dangerous eg The Right in Western Australia, yet usually hardly anyone can surf them. Of the really heavy or slabbing waves, Pipe gets the biggest crowds, so it gets the most serious injuries and sometimes they are fatal.
Pipeline is the most dangerous place to surf. Hands down. Not even close. I went to the NORTH SHORE in 2000. The locals told me it was 4 to 6 feet. 4 to 6 feet HELL!! IT WAS EVERY BIT 15 ft PLUS. You could see the dead reef sucking up in about 1 foot of water. I surf. I've been out at CAPE HATTERAS on HURRICANE swells. I wouldn't go out at PIPE if someone put a gun to my head. However while I was there I did surf SUNSET BEACH. It breaks way out in a channel where the water is deep enough so if you wipe out you won't get ripped to shreads. Even then I almost drowned. Got caught in the inside duck diving under 15 foot waves. You stay under the water for about a minute only to come up for air with ANOTHER 15 footer coming your way. Honest to GOD. I kissed the beach when I got to shore.😅
The answer to that question is….NO….come spend a winter in Ireland 🇮🇪 Il show you dangerous waves….pipe’s in the limelight and full of locals and traveling surfers so of course there’s going to be more injuries.. If there was 100 people surfing Riley‘s every day all winter there would be just as many injuries🤙🏼🇮🇪💯%

We need a series following the north shore lifeguards. Must be a wild job
Nice to see helmets are more accepted, these days.
Yeah it is imo an essential for reefs, hoodie at the very least.
All day long - like who drive a car these days without a belt on?

I know next to nothing about surfing, but Shipsterns Bluff looks much scarier.
It absolutely is. The only reason it doesn't have a colossal death toll is due to the fact you have to be borderline insane to surf it.

Sincere question: How could Pipe be more dangerous than Teahupoo or Shipsterns, etc. sans crowds?
that's what i thought. Maxxed out Teahupo'o is just the ocean folding on itself. its hard to think that it's less dangerous than pipe
