I wouldn’t really recommend it, but I think that’s where most homeowners are at. Most will just try to get the jobs done themselves. I wouldn’t attempt anything more daring than what I did for that one branch, though! 😊 Even though the camera angle didn’t really show it, I was able to position the ladder in a solid, open spot and far enough away to where I knew the branch wouldn’t come close to me. Thankful I don’t find the need for a ladder 99.9% of the time! We have a great arborist I call for anything bigger!
Love how you said "that I have the ability to remove myself", using tools, working safely and reasonably within the tools limitations and your own is a very wise recommendation.
Hi Laura we have a similar pole chainsaw and this may come from the mom in me, but the way my husband and I cut out branches when we need to use the ladder especially is to through a rope around the branch to be cut and one of us will cut as the other is pulling on the branch so that it doesn't come back and knock the person off the ladder. I know what a mom, but saftey first.
don't forget to fill the chain oil reservoir, cutting will be easier and safer if you're cutting dry wood! I just got a Dewalt chainsaw and love it! have so much fun, we're getting a ton of tree work done in a few weeks and I can't wait to see all the new open space and possiblities
As a Stihl dealer, one of the 1st things we would tell a customer buying a pole saw is, safety glasses, and a helmet. I cringed as I watched you cut those branches out, off of a ladder and no helmet. Lol
With this pole saw ,does it not use chain oil? I use an electric chainsaw, but it has to have oil to keep it lubricated and I do love the quickness and ease of my work with it.
I saw an oil port at the beginning of the video but I didn't see them put in the oil in it though..?? Watch them burn up the bearings! The have to replace the blade to!
That little nub you used to pull down branches is for resting against the branch you are cutting so it doesn't jump around the rotation of the chain pulls the branch to the nub just like when you use a saws all or jigsaw.
Thank you for showing this. I just purchased the blower that you use and can’t wait to try it out. The blower had been on sale, but of course when i went to buy it, it was totally sold out everywhere. So yesterday I go in and there’s only one left-no longer on sale and the clerk says he’ll give me $25 off since I coudn’t get the sale price-SOLD! Already have the batteries so i was happy. No more lugging the cords around. Thank you Laura!.

When I do see women working outside in videos like this I think it is wonderful be cause it’s time spent together even if it is work. I like to see a couple working together outside says alot about their relationship.
Hi, Laura. We have a Stihl pole saw but it is gasoline powered. Would be heavier but it is telescoping. We use it all the time on our 18 acres. It is a game changer. Robert says the wood chips are “man glitter”. 😂😂
I just have to say what an Inspiration you are, Laura. I am not an avid gardener but I have used so much of your advice for my regular yard work. You inspired me to get a pole saw and to tackle 3 huge overgrown trees all by myself- no hubby or tree service needed and I just had the best yard work day ever tackling those trees!!! Thank you so much!!
Mine too, however recently he opened a box and on top was a large hot pink paper that said: ""Hey stupid, read the instructions first". He said well, they got me... gave both of us a chuckle.
Ok Laura, you just taught a couple of seasoned Dewalt owners a new trick today! We never knew the battery life could be checked! Thanks for that and thank you for the demonstration...we love our dewalt tools 😘.
Very informative! Love how you took initiative to read instructions first instead of trying the tool first and then reading the manual like most of us do.
I recently got a similar pole saw. I found it surprisingly loud so got myself a pair of ear muffs. Also a hard hat because if anyone is going to get bonked on the head by a limb it's me! And of course eye protection. You're a great inspiration to all young women, showing how much they can do themselves! Keep up the good work. PS Aaron is a talented camera man and really amazing editor. The Oscar for cinematographer goes to...😄
Coffee with Laura and an honest review very refreshing this morning!!! I hope your arms didn't end up hurting later in the day from holding the pruner up but what a great way to increase your shoulder and arm strength right. Who needs the gym when you have 2 acres of garden to take care of :) I really enjoy the fact that you guys get new things and try them out for us because even if it's something I may not use at least I can offer an idea to other people I know who might get this product. I love your comment at the end about making sure people wear safety glasses or Aaron's glasses lol and I saw that you had a furry helper for just a bit then he decided to leave too funny. I also love how you stress the safety end of things and you made sure your ladder was sturdily placed before climbing up.
You uploaded 11minutes ago and I just found your channel in the last 30min. New sub. I'm amazed by this fact 🤓 I have never had this experience before. Simple life 😂 Again I have no idea why I keep having a weird urge to tie your hair up, it all started when I saw the first video of your potato harvesting. I didn't want the dirt to get in your hair 🤦 🤷 You do have beautiful thick luscious look hair👍 😏 maybe you can do a special routine on how to look beautiful when gardening. I have my scarecrow straw hat on, hair tired, sweat, overalls and all. You look so flawless when you do gardening. Meanwhile I haven't even watch this. 1 sec in and I'm commenting, still can't believe you just uploaded. Thanks for teaching me about potatoes 🤗
I got a Milwaukee pole saw for my Christmas gift, and it comes with a shoulder straps, it might help with the weight, I'm only 5'2, and it's pretty heavy if I extend the tools. you should get a shoulder straps too :-)
Great pole saw! I've been needing one that doesn't run on gas because of my shoulder being dislocated from an accident years ago, It can be hard to hold after trimming for a while. I can only reach so far over my head and the vibrations from the gas kind of bother me. Thanks for sharing I was wondering how this worked on a battery. Btw.. Mike doesn't read instructions either, he always laughs at me for sitting there and reading almost every word 😄 The saw cut great! Thanks for the slow motion shots so I could see the blades cutting.
I have a ryobi cordless similar to this and also have a bad shoulder. It is still pretty heavy and I cannot hold it up for too long. You might try one for weight at the store if you are considering one.
Oh, my goodness: Laura, I just realized you have your mother’s smile! (This morning I watched video where you spent the day working at Andrews Seed Co. & your mother smiles BEAUTIFULLY!) So precious. ❤️
Have you tried Green Works products? I love their products as long as they have a 60V battery. A don’t buy 40V. Of course it doesn’t have a much power. Thank you for your videos. 😊
We bought the Milwaukee saw for our son for Christmas, (h e has all Milwaukee tools, we have DeWalt) he loves it. Great for me since he trimmed all our trees, he is 6'2" and much stronger than me. He also bought the extension to make it longer.
Oh, I'm not glad that I find your channel 😆, I was just taking care of my late mother flowers and I was just in search for some answers about hydrangeas and now I'm watching whole bunch of your older and newer videos and I'm full of gardening ideas. 😂 I went to agro shop today to buy new leaves rake and they have Aliums bulbs on sale, is it too late to plant them for this season?
@@barbaramccann7944 I was just kidding with that beeing sad, of course I`m glad, I`m not glad that I allredy ordered some bushes, ornamental grass, Indian lilac and some new hydrengeas, way much more them I planed. Laura infected me with that...I could plant this and I could done that :D
Igor L. No it is not late to plant them right away. Laura has a lot of videos about tulips but also check this garden designers P. Allen Smith and Ygarden they also have videos about tulips it may help you. Good luck.
I appreciate you reviewing products. By watching you I can tell that I would struggle with the extension and could not use it. I would give it a good try without it. And, if it doesn't work for me I would just take it back to Lowe's.
my daughter and husband took a vote after my last ER visit and the staff agreed; I am not allowed to play with sharp things. but this looks like a handy tool for people who have tall trees and a less klutzy gardener.
LOVE this tool, I have the the Greenworks one and what a great tool. What I want to see you do a video on is how you store all your tools neatly, I've seen your tool hanging wall in a few videos and I would really like to see your methods for organization and display (easy reach/grab). I'm sure Aaron has preferences on this as well.
Great price point and a must add to the tool supply. And yes the Fiskar’s string is a pain, however, I’m glad to have it in my arsenal. Removing the ‘raggedy’ element from the trees in the garden creates a neater looking garden.
Boy, how I wish I had a pole saw! Could’ve saved myself a lot of time and energy limbing up the awful black cherry trees in my yard with my 12’ telescoping manual pruning saw. That gray thing you are using to pull cut branches down is actually the piece that should be against the branch you are cutting. Those nubs on it kind of pull the branch into the saw for more efficient cutting. Cutting should occur at the “base” of the saw not in the middle or the tip-either can allow the saw to bounce around which is very dangerous, (maybe a little less so with a pole saw but certainly with a regular chain saw). Stay safe! ♥️ Love your videos!!! ♥️ 🎥🌲🌿🌷🌸🌻🌳
I made the same comment about the gray nub I seen it bouncing around and thought that's not right I have run chainsaws most of my life and when they jump around vou are looking for trouble I didn't see you're comment until after I posted mine otherwise I would have only said I agree on you're comment instead of adding another one. just making sure everyone is safe because a saw can be dangerous.
You are so amazing girl....you just go for it. I tend to be that way too and get so excited that I can get in there and just getter done. I have a similar saw but Ryobi brand. I think the higher you go above your head you lose more of the control of the situation. I think if the job is requiring you to go much higher its likely safer to have a professional tree guy do. My instructions on my saw I think said do not get on a ladder?!? You are a daring girl.😲 Just my thoughts as I watch you tackle the job as well as experience from jobs around my hobby farm. Also agree with a few of the comments of a hard hat would be a good addition. Be safe😎 But I too am totally bad wearing one myself🤪 oopsie. Enjoy the vides you two 😍
Wow love that tool. I could use that a lot in my garden. I have the poleI saw and it gets tiring after awhile using it. It is so smart getting all tools from same company.
I just purchased an interesting tool for my yard as well, a lawn SWEEPER! I found it very useful because I have artificial turf that has to be swept every once in a while.
I adore your channel. And the end was great. But I think a bit of a safety moment with good eye protection as well as just general precautions around being on a ladder (with spotter) and anticipating the fall of the branch is very important. Good cutting technique is always important because if you cut poorly this can be an entry spot for disease and pests. Loping smaller branches (1” or so) is usually much cleaner. Great video!
Love your videos...my husband will sometimes watch with me. He commented about putting Aaron’s lenses on table & kept saying about needing to putt bar & chain oil in the oil compartment so that the chain stays oiled. This is a very important step👍🏻
Where did you get your gloves? I’ve had the hardest time trying to find a good pr of heavy duty utility gloves. Used to get them thru burpee, they no longer carry
We have a lot of Dewalt tools. I do want to ask if you have a problem with the leaf blower sucking the battery life in 20 minutes. We have the 60volt one and the battery life dies quickly.
This would be a good "recap video" question, I hope she answers it! I think it has something to do with the coloration of the branch, like it looks more gray if it's dead. I could be wrong though.
Normaly you can spot a dead branch, but if you really want to know you can make a little wound on the branch. When you see green than the branch is still recieving sap stream and will be oke ... when you dont see any green than it is mostly dead.
Is pruning a Willow Tree any different than pruning any other tree? (Like how you demonstrated with the crab apple recently). Wondering because of how Willows have their bending branches.
Hi Laura and Aaron! Even though we don't have any trees this was very good info for those that do. We do have a pole pruner that my husband used to cut branches from the neighbors tree that was hanging over our fence. Please wear a hard hat, too, and safety goggles would be better because they cover more area. Thank you for sharing!
This is one of my favorite tools. We have lots of live oaks and crape myrtles always needing dead trimmed out and this tool is a lifesaver! Thanks for sharing your experience! Dewalt really needs to get on board with y’all! 😂💚🌿
Question outside of the topic :). The Japanese Maple 🍁 that was behind you - will you be pruning that tree, or removing the leaves? How will you get it ready for Spring? Thanks again!
I also of a Japanese Maple this is my 1st year at my new house And I'm not sure how to care for it it has a big trunk with a beautiful crazy shape My neighbor lady who has tons of plants said it would be very expensive to get one with that size of trunk so .. I definitely want to make sure I know how to take good care of it.. all of the leaves are dried up but they're still on My beautiful little tree... I'll have to look through Garden Answer videos & see if I can find more info on them.. I know she has a bunch of different Japanese Maple around their property 🍂🍂🍁🍂🍂
Hi, Laura and Aaron...Great video, as always :) I recall you had Espalier apple trees in your former garden and am hoping you can give some tips on care for them. Thanks!
I think the pole pruner INSTRUCTIONS (the manual one) specifically do not recommend getting on a ladder with it, or am I wrong? But the ladder can be used with the pole power saw, just like Laura did. So that adds to how high you can reach. Thanks for the video, Laura!
Love watching you I saw woman power you do everything you give me courage to work in and around as i am a pensioner now an is home. Seeing you i can do most things around my house. That saw is great you use it well. You is a woman of class love you keep doing that great job. Blessings
I bought something like this for my husband Christmas time. He thought the idea of a chainsaw at the end of a long stick was ridiculous. He took it back and bought a regular pruner. Wish I would’ve had this video then so he could see it in action. Thanks for the video!
Gosh, I love it actually. I had been looking for a non-manual solution that was not using an actual chainsaw on a ladder, but as quick. This is like a mind reader product. Yeah, show him the video, you probably hurt his pride that you thought of something he hadn't. He needs to swallow that.
We have one for hedges. I find it’s too heavy for me to do for a long period of time because of the weight. My husband usually does the bushes. Although trimming hedges takes a lot longer then cutting a few branches. So I could find this tool pretty helpful!
How do you teal what branches need to be trimmed? Is it the same for all tree varieties? If I recall correctly, you cut it back to when that branch begins, correct? Thank you
It’s sold out but I got one at Home Depot with my military discount 😃! Can’t wait to try it. Sorry we couldn’t buy it through your link. Video suggestion: I’d love to see how you clean your tools after use and service them. Also how to organize/store them in your barn. Thank you and God bless...❤️
She did a video on that. Well, at least for her hand tools like her Felco hand pruner. If you can't find it, reply back and one of us (in the comments section) will help you find it.
Am I overlooking the recipe for the rolls? They look marvelous and I want to try them. Love you videos, the projects, and most of all the plant recommendations!
I didn’t cut anything large enough (except that one dead branch) to require an undercut. I can only really tell dead wood right now if it looks corky, shriveled and a flat brown color. It’s easy to spot in willows, a bit harder in other trees.
The first thing one should do before making the first cut is fill the chainsaw oil reservoir with oil. Then spin the chain for a couple of minutes to make sure the oil is flowing properly. Do that every time you use it and never let the reservoir run dry.
I saw the video after this and so you already answered my questions, except one question and that is have you ever thought of getting the Little giant ladders that you can put up very high and add the bar going across, that way you’re on a sturdier platform?
What a perfect review. I'm 5'2" and looking for a cordless pruner. I have other DeWalt cordless tools and for some reason it didn't occur to me to check their options out first.
She scares me to death her daring personality. She would get up on a ladder with a running saw. What a gardener does for their garden! Bless her!
I wouldn’t really recommend it, but I think that’s where most homeowners are at. Most will just try to get the jobs done themselves.
Thanks for reminding everyone about this. It's important to always use eye protection when operating any kind of saw.
Great video, thanks!
My husband bought one last year and loves it. 🥰👍
Always use ear. protection! You will be glad you did when you are older. Even small motors cause hearing loss. 💜💜
When a tree isn’t leafed out, how do you tell which branches are dead and need to be pruned?
I recall her making a video on this a few months ago.
If you notice a branch becoming damaged, that might be one way.
Doesn't matter.
Great video! I enjoy all your videos. But I'm wondering if you have to spray or paint the wounds of the tree.....
Me too
Thank you. Very helpful review!
Thank you for the demo and thanks for giving us the name of the manual pruner as well ☺️
Is pruning a Willow Tree any different than pruning any other tree?
She has a sponsored link above!👍
Marvelous garden tool for hard to reach trees and plants, thank you Laura👍
I know she has a bunch of different Japanese Maple around their property
🍂🍂🍁🍂🍂
Hi, Laura and Aaron...Great video, as always :) I recall you had Espalier apple trees in your former garden and am hoping you can give some tips on care for them. Thanks!
Oh what a cute little saw. That would be a handy tool to have around.
Thats a nice set up, your right on the same tools same battery's & Dewalt is bullet proof. nice work to the both of you plus one.
I have one for cleaning out weed sapling trees from junipers. No no more crawling into the bush. They make me itch, terribly.
Safety glasses = good.
Hard hat with screen even better.
Aarons gonna need new sunglasses from the rocking on the concrete table.
I will have to check that out we have a lot of trees that could use a little pruning I was thinking the same thing about Aaron's glasses!
We have one for hedges. I find it’s too heavy for me to do for a long period of time because of the weight. My husband usually does the bushes.
Although trimming hedges takes a lot longer then cutting a few branches. So I could find this tool pretty helpful!
Cool tool! Was wondering if you can use it like a hand held aswell...doesn't look so.
Very helpful to see an example and to have your input. Thank you for showing me so many things that are available.
I wonder how long the blades will last before needing replacing or sharpening? I’m sold on it! ❤️
Thank you for demo. I like Dewalt tools too
How do you teal what branches need to be trimmed? Is it the same for all tree varieties? If I recall correctly, you cut it back to when that branch begins, correct? Thank you
I love how that cat follows her around. EVERYWHERE!
I think you have to put chain oil in the tank provided to insure the chain lasts longer??
!!!!!!! GREAT Video !!!! I just got one for my Wife !!!! On that ladder, that's called a ( WIDOW MAKER ) !!!!!
Am I overlooking the recipe for the rolls? They look marvelous and I want to try them. Love you videos, the projects, and most of all the plant recommendations!
Hello there, great video.
Can i use the pole saw to cut back my arborvitae at the top that i can't reach?
Thanks in advance.
Are the replacement chains reasonably priced? Also does it take a special bar and chain oil?
Just a question about how you can tell which branches are dead when they are in their dormant season?
Laura is it better to prune tree limbs in the winter or does it really matters?
Did you score the underside of the cut? Also, how can you tell which branches are dead this time of year?
I didn’t cut anything large enough (except that one dead branch) to require an undercut. I can only really tell dead wood right now if it looks corky, shriveled and a flat brown color. It’s easy to spot in willows, a bit harder in other trees.
I'm totally going yo look into getting that!! Will be a huge help in our yard with so many mature trees! Thank you the demo!
The first thing one should do before making the first cut is fill the chainsaw oil reservoir with oil. Then spin the chain for a couple of minutes to make sure the oil is flowing properly. Do that every time you use it and never let the reservoir run dry.
Ive been debating getting one this really is making me at ease at how good it would work.
I saw the video after this and so you already answered my questions, except one question and that is have you ever thought of getting the Little giant ladders that you can put up very high and add the bar going across, that way you’re on a sturdier platform?
Did you add the bar and chain oil? Mine really stressed the need for that oil to be in there....??
I really like this but how would you clean it between trees if you have a disease in a tree?
She did a video on that. Search the channel with the keyword "pruning." If you can't find it, one of us (the commenters) will find it for you.
What a perfect review. I'm 5'2" and looking for a cordless pruner. I have other DeWalt cordless tools and for some reason it didn't occur to me to check their options out first.
Great Valentines gift for my wife, she will need a taller ladder though
Laura do you still have the wheee hostas in the same container where you have the 🍁 maple tree ? They were bountiful together !!
I wish we had 40 degree weather to use this in but in Florida we have to wait for cool days... Gonna try to trim some branches today
I have one of those! It's so nice for trimming the trees around my garden. It's well worth the money.
Did you use oil in your saw. What kind if so.
