  • This video is packed with information on Italian Cypress trees. Why Italian cypress trees get floppy or drooping branches, how to prevent them and how to repair them. I am also trying to make sense of the overwhelming contradictory information available on-line regarding the Italian Cypress. I am showing the 2 varieties of cypress I have in my garden: the Stricta and the Totem and the differences between the 2 of them. If you don't have the correct climate for the Totem but you still want one in your garden then you must be prepared to treat it as if it was a topiary in order to achieve a dense mat of foliage that can withstand being buffeted by the wind, rain and snow.
I filmed part of this video in a linear park in the north of Madrid that faces east-west and it is quite a wind tunnel since the prevailing winds come from the west. They have a substantial quantity of Italian Cypress planted from babies up to 43 feet and growing.... and it is the perfect place to show how a cypress treated as a topiary can withstand the wind because its leaves have formed a dense mat difficult to penetrate. I also show younger varieties whose branches are still quite open, but are well on the way to forming denser branching and finally a young cypress that hasn't been sheared yet and is a big floppy mess. I also show you other things to note regarding Italian cypress: aspect of tree when it doesn't receive sufficient light and also a dead cypress that is now affecting its nearest neighbour.
